500 Years of European Colonialism

In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. Also, the willingness to exploit and abuse the people and resources of so-called "primitive" nations was very helpful in the whole enterprise.

A fascinating look at the impact of Western Colonialism which separates the facts from the fiction regarding this incredibly controversial topic. What were the effects both positive and negative of countries existing under British rule? Is the history of your ancestors true - or is it filled with rampant propaganda? What is the historical impact of western imperialism?

The public’s reaction to Justin Trudeau’s election is reminiscent to Obama’s victory in 2008. But despite the fact that Trudeau voted for the totalitarian, police state-inducing legislation, Bill C-51, and unequivocally supports existing pipeline proposals, and the expansion of the Tar Sands, loads of so-called “progressives” are swooning. Now Trudeau is aiming to co-opt and pacify the growing movement of indigenous sovereignty.

Paul Leroy Robeson (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American singer and actor who became involved with the Civil Rights Movement. At Rutgers College, he was an outstanding football player, then had an international career in singing, with a distinctive, powerful, deep bass voice, as well as acting in theater and movies. He became politically involved in response to the Spanish Civil War, fascism, and social injustices. His advocacy of anti-imperialism, affiliation with communism, and criticism of the United States government caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Ill health forced him into retirement from his career. He remained until his death an advocate of the political stances he took.
Robeson won an academic scholarship to Rutgers College, where he became a football All-American and the class valedictorian. He received his LL.B. from Columbia Law School, while playing in the National Football League (NFL). At Columbia, he sang and acted in off-campus productions; and, after graduating, he became a participant in the Harlem Renaissance with performances in The Emperor Jones and All God's Chillun Got Wings. Robeson initiated his international artistic résumé with a theatrical role in Great Britain, settling in London for the next several years with his wife Essie.
Robeson next appeared as Othello at the Savoy Theatre before becoming an international cinema star through roles in Show Boat and Sanders of the River. He became increasingly attuned towards the sufferings of other cultures and peoples. Acting against advice, which warned of his economic ruin if he became politically active, he set aside his theatrical career to advocate the cause of the Republican forces of the Spanish Civil War. He then became active in the Council on African Affairs (CAA).
During World War II, he supported America's war efforts and won accolades for his portrayal of Othello on Broadway. However, his history of supporting pro-Soviet policies brought scrutiny from the FBI. After the war ended, the CAA was placed on the Attorney General's List of Subversive Organizations and Robeson was investigated during the age of McCarthyism. Due to his decision not to recant his public advocacy of pro-Soviet policies, he was denied a passport by the U.S. State Department, and his income, consequently, plummeted. He moved to Harlem and published a periodical critical of United States policies. His right to travel was eventually restored by the 1958 United States Supreme Court decision, Kent v. Dulles, but his health broke down. He retired and he lived out the remaining years of his life privately in Philadelphia.

French Colonialism Must End
Quotes:
"I am thankful that both the President and First Lady are still alive but brutally mutilated. I condemn, however, the use of so-called "peacekeeping" forces made up of UN and French forces in the attacks on Abidjan and the presidential palace. It is these forces that have caused countless deaths in this densely populated city of four million people."

Public Lecture
October 27, 2015
Co-sponsored by SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement, J.S. Woodsworth Chair in the Humanities, First Nations Studies, and Department of History, and UBC's First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program and Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies.
Governmental policies and actions related to Indigenous peoples, though often termed “racist” or “discriminatory,” are rarely depicted as what they are: classic cases of imperialism and a particular form of colonialism—settler colonialism. As anthropologist Patrick Wolfe has noted: “The question of genocide is never far from discussions of settler colonialism. Land is life—or, at least, land is necessary for life.” i The history of North America is a history of settler colonialism. The objective of government authorities was to terminate the existence of Indigenous Peoples as peoples—not as random individuals. This is the very definition of modern genocide. US and Canadian history, as well as inherited Indigenous trauma, cannot be understood without dealing with the genocide committed against Indigenous peoples. From the colonial period through the founding of states and continuing in the 21st century, this has entailed torture, terror, sexual abuse, massacres, systematic military occupations, removals of Indigenous peoples from their ancestral territories, forced removal of Native American children to military-like boarding schools, allotment, and policies of termination.
Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz grew up in rural Oklahoma, daughter of a tenant farmer and part-Indian mother. Her grandfather, a white settler, farmer, and veterinarian, was a member of the Oklahoma Socialist Party and Industrial Workers of the World. Her historical memoir, "Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie," tells that story. Moving to San Francisco, California, she graduated in History from San Francisco State University and began graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley, transferring to University of California, Los Angeles to complete her doctorate in History, specializing in Western Hemisphere and Indigenous histories. From 1967 to 1972, she was a full time activist and a leader in the women's liberation movement that emerged in 1967, organizing in various parts of the U. S., traveling to Europe, Mexico, and Cuba. A second historical memoir, "Outlaw Woman: Memoir of the War Years, 1960-1975," tells that story. In 1973, Roxanne joined the American Indian Movement (AIM) and the International Indian Treaty Council, beginning a lifelong commitment to international human rights, lobbying for Indigenous rights at the United Nations. Appointed as director of Native American Studies at California State University East Bay, she collaborated in the development of the Department of Ethnic Studies, as well as Women's Studies, where she taught for 3 decades. Her 1977 book, "The Great Sioux Nation: An Oral History of the Sioux Nation," was the fundamental document at the first international conference on Indians of the Americas, held at United Nations' headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Two more scholarly books followed: "Roots of Resistance: A History of Land Tenure in New Mexico" and "Indians of the Americas: Human Rights and Self-Determination." In 1981, Roxanne was invited to visit Sandinista Nicaragua to appraise the land tenure situation of the Mískitu Indians in the isolated northeastern region of the country. In over a hundred trips to Nicaragua and Honduras, she monitored what was called the Contra War. Her book, "Blood on the Border: A Memoir of the Contra War," was published in 2005. "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States" was published by Beacon Press in September 2014.

"I called for a cease fire and no one responded. This was eight days ago."
"I again called for an immediate cease-fire, and no one responded."
"And I call on UN, French and Ouattara forces to halt immediately "death squads" roving around the streets of Abidjan "disappearing" supporters of President Gbagbo."
"This killing must stop now!"
- - - - - -
"This is not about the Gbagbos or Cote d'Ivoire, but about the modern day return to French Colonial Imperialism. And this time with the help of the United Nations."
- - - - - - - -
"President Museveni of Uganda who said yesterday, prior to the capture of the Gbagbos that: 'I have not been happy with the way the UN and International Community, especially the French have responded to the events of the post election Ivory Coast. I desired that it would have been ideal for a thorough Investigation into the alleged election rigging and it be done by a credible and independent body under the African Union leadership and guidance instead of violently forcing Laurent Gbagbo out of power without a hearing. I am not pleased with the way International Community can sanction a situation of blood bath in the domestic affairs of African Countries. I would prefer a peaceful intervention by an African Union committee that would investigate into the matter, give the parties a fair hearing and come out with a workable recommendation that can promote peace and stability in the region. The recommendation would include the possibility of a peaceful and conciliatory settlement towards a power-sharing deal as was done in the case of Kenya and Zimbabwe. At this point, I believe he would be happy to have a team of capable African leaders chosen under the auspices of African Union to work on a peaceful end to the conflict in Ivory Coast. I believe the Africa Union must be given the opportunity to handle the matter in-house. I am of course not pleased with the way the UN and the International Community has directly thrown their weight in support of Alassane Outtara and now recognizing him as president.'"

"I have warned the UN and the French on this floor four times in the past week that they would have blood on their hands if they continued supporting the rebel forces of Alassane Ouattara and continued the bombing the capital of Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan, and did not agree to an immediate cease-fire."
- - - - - - - -
"I also suggest that the United States step in to help and examine the possibility seeking a place of exile for the Gbagbos outside of Cote d'Ivoire.
The U.S. has performed such a role before when in 1986, under the Reagan Administration, Haiti's "Baby Doc" Duvalier was sent into exile in France. This could be an important step towards beginning a process of reconciliation that the people of Cote d'Ivoire so dearly deserve."
- - - - - -
"Cote d'Ivoire has had a hard enough time trying to break free of the yoke of French colonialism. From the days of President Houphouet-Boigny in 1960 through Bedie in 2000 when Gbagbo was democratically elected. This shadow of colonialism must be lifted not only from Cote d'Ivoire but from all of Africa."
