Ukrainian War of Independence

The Ukrainian War of Independence was a period from 1917 to 1921 of sustained warlike conflict between different political and military forces, which resulted in the establishment and development of a Ukrainian republic, later a part of the Soviet Union as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. It comprised a series of military conflicts between Ukrainians who supported different governmental, political and military forces, among them Ukrainian nationalists, anarchists, Bolsheviks, the Central Powers forces of Germany and Austria-Hungary, the White Russian Volunteer Army, and Second Polish Republic forces for control of Ukraine after the February Revolution in the Russian Empire. Also involved were foreign interventionists, in particular France and Romania. The struggle lasted from February 1917 to November 1921 and resulted in the division of Ukraine between the Bolshevik Ukrainian SSR, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. The conflict is frequently viewed within the framework of the Russian Civil War as well as the closing stage of the First World War.

War of independence

A war of independence is a conflict occurring over a territory that has declared independence. Once the state that previously held the territory sends in military forces to assert its sovereignty or the native population clashes with the former occupier, a separatist rebellion has begun. If a new state is successfully established, the conflict is usually known as a ¨War of Independence¨.

Use of the term largely originates from the American War of Independence but prior conflicts sometimes got the name retroactively—such as the Dutch War of Independence, originally known as the "Seven Years' War" and still often called by that name in the Netherlands themselves.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine - how did it all begin? Get a historical perspective to the complexity of the situation in a Nutshell Script: Ukraine - a long road to independence Ukraine, is the largest country entirely within Europe, strategically positioned at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. Historically, It has been famous for its fertile soil and high agricultural output, but over the last century it became also an important industrial center - and a network of pipelines - channel huge quantities of natural gas from Russia to Europe. Ukraine's history, dates back to the 9th century, when Viking settlers and local Slavs, established the powerful kingdom of Kievan-Rus. Both Russia, and Ukraine, consider this kingdom, to be their cultural inheritance Internal conflicts followed by a Mongol invasion in the 13th century ended this episode, and while Russia maintained different forms of independence, THIS region was passed between neighboring powers and was usually divided between a few. In 1654, a short-lived Ukrainian Cossack state broke-off from Poland, in a violent revolt which included the brutal massacre of entire Jewish communities. This new state pledged its allegiance to Russia... but became totally absorbed into it over the next 100 years Russia, for its part, continued to do its best to repress Ukrainian nationalism. In 1917, following the the Russian revolution and the overthrow of the Czar, it achieved a short-lived independence, however by 1922 it became part of the newly established USSR. During WWII Ukraine was conquered by Nazi Germany. Many Ukrainians cooperated with the Nazis in hope of achieving independence and many resisted, but eventually they returned to be part of the USSR. In 1991 an overwhelming 90% of Ukrainian citizens voted to break off from the USSR... which dissolved shortly after. Years of political and economic instability ensued: While the majority of citizens, turned towards Europe - Russia and a dominant Russian-ethnic minority in Ukraine pushed to maintain Russian dominance. In 2014 Russian military forces moved into the Crimean Peninsula and annexed it with the support the local ethnic-Russian population. This move was declared illegal by Ukraine and most of the West. The Kiev Uprising in November 1917 led to the defeat of Russian imperial forces in the capital. Soon after, the Central Rada took power in Kiev, while in late December 1917 the Bolsheviks set up a rival Ukrainian republic in the eastern city of Kharkov (Ukrainian: Kharkiv) -- initially also called the "Ukrainian People's Republic". Hostilities against the Central Rada government in Kiev began immediately. Under these circumstances, the Rada declared Ukrainian independence on January 22, 1918 and broke ties with Russia. The Rada had limited armed force (the Ukrainian People's Army) at its disposal and was hard-pressed by the Kharkov government which received men and resources from the Russian SFSR. As a result, the Bolsheviks quickly overran Poltava, Aleksandrovsk (now Zaporizhia), and Yekaterinoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk) by January 1918. Across Ukraine, local Bolsheviks also formed the Odessa and Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republics; and in the south Nestor Makhno formed the Free Territory -- an anarchist region -- then allied his forces with the Bolsheviks. Aided by the earlier Kiev Arsenal Uprising, the Red Guards entered the capital on February 9, 1918. This forced the Central Rada to evacuate to Zhytomyr . In the meantime, the Romanians took over Bessarabia and the Germans captured Kishinev (Romanian: Chişinău). Most remaining Russian Army units either allied with the Bolsheviks or joined the Ukrainian People's Army. A notable exception was Colonel Mikhail Drozdovsky, who marched his White Volunteer Army unit across the whole of Novorossiya to the River Don, defeating Makhno's forces in the process.

They are the principle deterrent force against any aggression that could be shown against the sovereign state of Ukraine. All military and security forces, including the Armed Forces of Ukraine are under the command of the President of Ukraine, and subject to oversight by a permanent Verkhovna Rada parliamentary commission. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are composed of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, the Ukrainian Navy, the Ukrainian Air Force, and the Ukrainian Airmobile Forces. Ukraine's naval forces maintain their own small Ukrainian Naval Infantry force as well as their own Ukrainian Naval Aviation force. The Ukrainian Sea Guard is the coast guard service of Ukraine, however it is part of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and is not subordinate to the Navy. As a result of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine from 2014, the president commissioned governors of oblasts of Ukraine to create volunteer units under the government program "Territorial Defense". Initially these units received minimal funding coming from regional budgets and mostly relied on donations. In November 2014 most of the territorial battalions were integrated into Ukraine's Ground forces. National Guard of Ukraine serves as the main reserve component of Armed Forces of Ukraine. Due to the ongoing hostilities with the Russian Federation, Ukraine has greatly increased the size of its military forces to 204.000 soldiers (+46000 civil servants) in 2014, not counting paramilitary forces such as the border guards (53.000), the new formed National Guard of Ukraine (60.000) or the security service.Ukraine's armed forces came close to France, which maintained a 229,000 man force, as the largest in Europe when excluding Russia. It was reported that Ukraine's military swelled to 280,000 personnel. This was largely achieved by the repeated waves of mobilization bringing in new recruits while older soldiers had not yet been processed out, the state budget for 2015 ultimately calls for a force of 230,000. Hryhoriy Pedchenko reported that 51% of Ukraine's enlisted personnel were contract soldiers. Military units of other states participate in multinational military exercises with Ukrainian forces in Ukraine regularly. Many of these exercises are held under the NATO co-operation program Partnership for Peace. Since 3 June 2016 women are allowed to serve in combat units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
