Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar energy technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity and solar architecture, which can make considerable contributions to solving some of the most urgent problems the world now faces.
Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.
In 2011, the International Energy Agency said that "the development of affordable, inexhaustible and clean solar energy technologies will have huge longer-term benefits. It will increase countries’ energy security through reliance on an indigenous, inexhaustible and mostly import-independent resource, enhance sustainability, reduce pollution, lower the costs of mitigating climate change, and keep fossil fuel prices lower than otherwise. These advantages are global. Hence the additional costs of the incentives for early deployment should be considered learning investments; they must be wisely spent and need to be widely shared".

I'm Shawn Buckley, founder of Focused Sun and inventor of the FourFold solar module. I'm a former professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, specializing in solar energy. I've written a best selling solar energy book, Sunup to Sundown (McGraw-Hill). This isn't my first rodeo: I was a founder of Chevron's solar energy subsidiary, Hydro Sun, over 30 years ago. Since then I've founded 3 other Silicon Valley startups.
The FourFold solar panel collects four times more energy from the sun than a conventional photovoltaic (PV) panel. It's called a "hybrid" because both heat and electricity are captured.

Dr. David W. Galipeau is the Harold Hohbach Professor of Electrical Engineering and the Coordinator of the Center for Advanced Photovoltaics and Sustainable Energy; and Electrical Engineering MS and Ph.D. graduate programs at South Dakota State University. He was also the program lead for the Alternative Power Technology (APT) Program supported by the Department of Defense. While at SDSU, he has been the PI or Co-PI on over forty funded research projects, including twelve major NSF awards for over $10 M and eight SBIR-STTR awards. He has published over 100 research papers, given numerous presentations, and established a spin off business. He was also Co-founder of the Center for Advanced Photovoltaics and Sustainable Energy.

This light stay dimly lit light when it is dark, and becomes brighter when it detects motion. When it gets enough light it is reasonably bright. One other small nag is that this light has a logo on the front panel. I have several other lights of this type and I like using them in pairs. They have the same shape and size, but the logo makes this light look like a mismatch. During your time at the Department of Energy the deployment of renewable energy in the U.S. doubled. Is the fall in fossil-fuel prices killing the business case for renewables?
The decline in fossil-fuel prices does have some effect, but remember that 78 percent of the economies of the U.S. have state-mandated renewable portfolio standards. They require that a specified fraction of electricity must come from renewable energy. For example, in California the goal is 33 percent renewable energy by 2020.
Right now renewable electricity is roughly 13 percent of total electricity generated in the U.S. Half is hydropower and the other half is mostly wind energy, with some solar, biomass and geothermal. Renewable energy costs have come down significantly. Even if natural gas, which is the cheapest form of electricity generation today, stays at $4 per million Btus [British thermal units], wind without subsidy is almost as inexpensive.
Electrical generation in the sunnier parts of the U.S. is also approaching equality with a new natural gas power plant. The cost of wind and solar is anticipated to decline for at least a decade or two. Perhaps in a decade, renewables will be competitive with any new form of energy in many parts of the U.S.

Not all "free energy" claims are necessarily bunk, and not to be confused with Renewable Energy. There certainly is cheap-ass energy to be had in the environment that may be harvested at either zero cost or sustain us for long amounts of time. Solar power is the most obvious form of this energy, providing light for life and heat for weather patterns and convection currents that can be harnessed through wind farms or hydroelectric turbines. In 2009 Nokia announced they expect to be able to gather up to 20 milliwatts of power from ambient radio sources such as broadcast TV and cellular networks, enough to slowly recharge a typical mobile phone in standby mode.This may be viewed not so much as free energy, but energy that someone else paid for.
