Thanks to Petro Ratensky or Ratnensky,Петро Ратенський (Ратненський),the famous icon painter and
Metropolitan of Kyiv and all
Rus.
In 1260 Petro (Petr,
Peter) was born in the village
Ratne,
Volhyn or
Volhynia (Galicia-Volhynia,
West Ukraine) in the family of pious Fedir and Evpraksia.
But
Historian V.R. Vavryk suggests that Peter was born in the village Verhrati Rava-Ruska
District (
Lviv region) during the reign of
Danylo Halytsky and Profesor Holubynsky suggests that
Metropolitan Peter could be born in wealthy parents in
Lviv or Belhz.
In 1272 Peter entered the monastery near
Belz (Lviv
Region).
Later, with the blessing of his abbot, he departed in the cozy woods and began to create his monastery - the church of
St. Saviour. So
St. Peter became abbot of Ratensky (Novodvorsky) monastery (near the modern village Dvirtsi, the river Rata).
Peter painted icons and gave them as a gift.
After the death of Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus
Maxim in 1305
Mikhail Yaroslavich,
Grand Prince of Tver, wanted to put his candidate
on the metropolitan department who dared lie to gain a rank . That was a violation of the old traditions, because since the adoption of
Christianity in
Kyivan Rus there was only one Ruthenian
Metropolis in
Kyiv.
Then
Galician prince took steps to establish a single metropolis in
Galicia or
Halychyna. He sent
Abbot Peter to
Athanasius Patriarch of Constantinople. Patriarch put him on
Metropolitan, but not in Galician,in order to avoid provocation and strife, but the Primate of the
Ruthenian Church, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus.
1308-1309 - Kyiv Metropolitan
Because Kyiv suffered after
Tatar attacks metropolitans didn't have right conditions for managing of metropolitanate,
Saint Peter moved to Vladimir-on-Klyazma, and with
1325 Peter,in order to avoid problems that deliberately created
Prince of Tver Mikhail, at the request of
Ivan Danilovich Kalyta, the department moved to a small metropolitan town (then)
Moscow.
1309-1326 - Moscow Metropolitan.
In 1326 his death found him in the way during the apostolic missionary work. S He was buried as he asked in Moscow's
Cathedral .In 1339
Ruthenian Orthodox Church enlisted him to his saints
.
In the pre-Mongol Rus' greatest spiritual and artistic centers were Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and St.
Sofia Cathedral.
After the fall of Kyiv, government, church and artistic and religious life has moved in the Galicia-Volhynia state, continuing the tradition of Kyiv.
In the
XIII -
XIV century due to adverse socio-political and economic circumstances of church art was not able to develop widely in the territory. Therefore, from the middle of the
XIII century Ukrainian producers worked far beyond their lands.
At the end of the XIII - XIV century most Galician masters travelled to work in northern lands:
Novgorod, Moscow. That's why in Novgorod and
Ukraine icons of
XIV - XV centuries have a lot of common characteristics.
Having left for the territory of modern
Russia, Peter Ratensky in the first half of XIV century decorated and built Moscow
Art in the spirit of Galician church temples.
Metropolitan Peter was the only one well known today writer and painter, iconographer of Galician-Volhyn land in the
Prince era (
Kyiv Rus).
