Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich
The reason why some countries are rich and others poor depends on the quality of their institutions, the culture they have, the natural resources they find and what latitude they're on.

Here is the countdown of the Top 10 Highly Developed Countries:
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic used to rank countries according to their development levels from "very high" to "low." Countries are placed based on life expectancy, education, standard of living, child welfare, health care, economic welfare, and population happiness. Formulas are used to factor all the variables and determine the scores of countries. Critics have cited the HDI as inaccurate or vague, but coming up with top ten highly developed countries list on my own opinion would have been very subjective and probably badly ranked. Thus, I have simply listed the first ten countries on the HDI and displayed their scores. Enjoy!

Population ageing
Population ageing is a phenomenon that occurs when the median age of a country or region rises due to rising life expectancy and/or declining fertility rates. There has been, initially in the more economically developed countries but also more recently in less economically developed countries, an increase in life expectancy which causes the ageing of populations. This is the case for every country

Parasite Predators and the Weight Loss Connection

Hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms are certainly disgusting to look at and in severe cases have been known to cause, deformities, blindness and even death. This is the story of Kathryn, who had tried everything to lose w

Why does the west want to install new regimes into countries around the world. First, I consider how difficult it is for alternative politicians to be selected in developed countries. In the USA and the UK we have a two party system which is virtually impossible to break away from. By installing a regime, a centralized bank and your own political system you can achieve the same result across the world. Ostensibly seen as democratic the new regime is now totally controlled by the hidden hand.

Why are goods cheaper in poor countries?
If you've traveled the world, or maybe just talked to someone who has, you might have noticed that at least some things are much cheaper when you buy them in poorer regions, such as South America, Southeast Asia, or Africa. For instance, a friend of mine recently returned from a long journey through Latin America, and he told me that restaurant meals were so cheap there, that it never made sense to cook for himself. Meanwhile, here in Canada, if I tried to eat out at restaurants for every meal I'd go broke. Another friend of mine said that in his home country of Brazil, it's common for middle class families to have a full time maid. Barely anyone can afford a full time maid in the United States, even though it's a much wealthier country than Brazil. And when I take a taxi ride in North America, I expect to pay between fifty and one hundred dollars to drive across a city, but if I took a cab in Nairobi, I'd pay a five dollar flat fee.
But it's not the case that all goods are cheaper in poorer parts of the world. A new pair of bluejeans sell for about the same price in impoverished Haiti as they do in nearby Florida. And how could they not? If bluejeans in Haiti were one quarter the price of bluejeans in Florida, some clever person would load them on a boat, sell them in Florida for less than the other sellers, and still make a tidy profit.
The important thing about all the examples I gave, restaurant meals on Latin America, maid services in Brazil, and taxi rides in Nairobi, is that they're not things you can ship to other parts of the world. You have to be in the same place as a chef, maid, or cab driver to hire them, and if they tried to move to a developed country like Germany, Canada, or Japan, they would most likely be stopped at the border and sent back.
So the reason some goods are much cheaper in poor parts of the world is that immigration laws stop the majority of the world's poor from trading services with the majority of the world's relatively rich. So the services that poor people are good at providing are cheap in the places where lots of poor people live, and expensive in the places most poor people are barred from entering.
But what if we didn't stop people from living and working in the wealthy parts of the world? If there were no migration restrictions, chefs, maids, and cab drivers in poor countries would notice that they could be earning a lot more if they moved, and many of them would move. Their competition in developed countries' labour markets would drive down the costs of services in those countries, while their absence from their home countries would drive up the costs of services in those countries, until services cost the same everywhere.
Economists have estimated that the total wealth of the human race would increase by between fifty and one hundred fifty per cent if migration restrictions were lifted worldwide. Most of these benefits would go to the very poor migrants who would suddenly gain access to a much larger labour market. And yes, the large price differences between poor and rich countries would go away.
The remaining price differences would come from transportation costs, tariffs, and trade restrictions, but these are all relatively minor compared to the huge economic impact of migration restrictions.

The RC390 was designed and developed at KTM HQ in Mattighofen, Austria, but is manufactured in the company’s Indian facility, which has kept cost down and allowed the bike to not only address the needs of emerging markets and developed countries with tiered licensing laws, but also to offer budget-minded American buyers an exotic alternative in the class. The RC390 is expected to hit dealers in February, 2015.
Based on the Duke 390, the RC390 is the new flagship of KTM’s small-displacement single-cylinder range made up of 125, 200 and 373cc models. The Duke’s proven liquid-cooled, dohc, fuel-injected counter-balanced four-stroke single serves as a stressed member of the RC’s tubular steel-trellis frame. The Duke’s 25-degree rake and 3.9-inch trail have been steepened/shortened on the RC390 to 23.5 degrees and 3.5 inches. Add in its shorter 52.8-inch wheelbase and it’s all about sharper handling response.

Population ageing is a phenomenon that occurs when the median age of a country or region rises due to rising life expectancy and/or declining fertility rates. There has been, initially in the more economically developed countries but also more recently in less economically developed countries, an increase in life expectancy which causes the ageing of populations. This is the case for every country in the world except the 18 countries designated as "demographic outliers" by the UN. For the entirety of recorded human history, the world has never seen as aged a population as currently exists globally. The UN predicts the rate of population ageing in the 21st century will exceed that of the previous century. Countries vary significantly in terms of the degree, and the pace, of these changes, and the UN expects populations that began ageing later to have less time to adapt to the many implications of these changes.

Are parasites making you fat?
Hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms are certainly disgusting to look at and in severe cases have been known to cause, deformities, blindness and even death. But did you know that in developed countries, inability to lose weight and other mysterious illness may be attributed to these parasite predators?
This is the story of Kathryn, who had tried everything to lose weight with little or no success. She was desperate when she turned to nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman, who had a very different idea about what was behind her fatigue and weight gain.
Ann Louise suggested she try an herbal parasite cleanse. (My Colon Cleansing Kit from https://www.unikeyhealth.com/my-colon-cleansing-kit ) Amazingly, within two weeks the weight started coming off. She lost 22 lbs and no longer felt fatigued.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has come under renewed criticism for failing poor and developing countries with talks on agricultural trade unable to yield a breakthrough in more than 14 years.
Nations including Kenya, India and Pakistan have been calling on the WTO to force developed countries to phase out subsidies paid to farmers whose overproduction is threatening the livelihoods of farmers in the developing world.
Many analysts have argued that negotiations at the WTO have remained largely dominated by traditional economic powers such as the US and EU with discussions failing to deliver promised change.
Some point to the failure of western governments to conclude what's known as the 'Doha Development Agenda' which has kept agricultural economies in Africa trapped in poverty.
The Doha Development Agenda, which began in Qatar in 2001, is a series of trade negotiations with the broad aim of reforming the international trading system through the introduction of lower trade barriers and revised trade rules.
But 14 years on, some of the biggest of those issues - agriculture tariffs and farming subsidies - remain unresolved.
Ricardo Melendez-Ortiz, the CEO of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development joins Counting the Cost to discuss whether the Doha Round should be scrapped.
Global arms industry continues to boom
The international arms trade is continuing to boom, with trade at its highest level since the end of the Cold War.
Worth more than $400 billion a year, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), around 100 companies control the trade with 64 of them based in either the US and Western Europe.
While the US is the world's biggest exporter with 54.4 percent of the market, German and Swiss sales have grown to 9.4 percent and 11.2 percent respectively.
Increasing instability in the Middle East and Asia has prompted an arms race between Iran and the Gulf States, while a similar situation between Pakistan and India has prompted both countries to stock up on huge amounts of weapons.
Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher with the SIPRI's arms and military expenditure programme joins the show to discuss who's buying what weapons.

Jake Herrle, EMIR candidate
"The effects of war don’t end when the guns fall silent,” says Ron Atkinson, professor of African History at the University of South Carolina, in an 11:00 documentary short produced and directed by EMIR candidate Jake Herrle. "When the Guns Fall Silent" tells the story of a Ugandan woman who was one of 50,000 children abducted by the rebel group Lord’s Resistance Army. She was forced to serve as a child solider under its leader Joseph Kony, before escaping to an Internally Displaced Persons camp. This film chronicles her life after the war. The screening will be followed by a discussion about putting a face on the complex issues of post-conflict reconstruction.

Global Problems of Population Growth (MCDB 150)
Concerns about low fertility have been present in many countries for at least 100 years. A large population was considered essential to national power. But the issue is never simply a shortage of warm bodies: overall the world population has increased dramatically over this period and untold numbers would immigrate, if allowed. The issue is the number of the 'right sort' of people, defined as those having preferred national, religious, racial, ethnic, or language characteristics. Fertility levels are below replacement in many economically advanced countries. As a result, these countries are aging; medical and retirement costs are increasing. Countries must either raise fertility, accept immigrants, or adapt to a smaller, older population. Policies to raise fertility have not been very effective, except in severe dictatorships. To keep the ratio of working age people to dependents constant, hundreds of millions of immigrants would be required such that 70-80% of the population of receiving countries would be immigrants and their children. Adaptation is probably best, but the required changes (raise retirement age, tax the pension benefits of the wealthy, etc) are politically difficult.

The Least Developed Countries Report 2015 addresses the issue of structural transformation of rural economies in LDCs, emphasising its critical importance to fulfilment of the SDGs globally. It concludes that such transformation needs to encompass agricultural upgrading and diversification towards rural non-farm activities, and to maximise the synergies between the two; and that it needs to foster an increase in rural demand while strengthening supply response. The Report highlights the potential of the infrastructure investment needed to generate increased rural demand, and the importance of appropriate sequencing and design, including labour-based construction methods and local procurement, to maximise its transformational effect. It concludes by outlining policies for rural structural transformation in the areas of finance, agricultural technology, enterprise and innovation, human resources and institutions.

When Chinese naval supply vessel Qiandaohu entered Australia’s Albany Port this month to replenish Chinese warships helping search for a missing Malaysian airliner, it highlighted a strategic headache for Beijing – its lack of offshore bases and friendly ports to call on.
China’s deployment for the search – 18 warships, smaller coastguard vessels, a civilian cargo ship and an Antarctic icebreaker – has stretched the supply lines and logistics of its rapidly expanding navy, Chinese analysts and regional military attaches say.
China’s naval planners know they will have to fill this strategic gap to meet Beijing’s desire for a fully operational blue-water navy by 2050 – especially if access around Southeast Asia or beyond is needed in times of tension.
China is determined to eventually challenge Washington’s traditional naval dominance across the Asia Pacific and is keen to be able to protect its own strategic interests across the Indian Ocean and Middle East.
“As China’s military presence and projection increases, it will want to have these kind of (port) arrangements in place, just as the U.S. does,” said Ian Storey, a regional security expert at Singapore’s Institute of South East Asian Studies.
“I am a bit surprised that there is no sign that they even started discussions about long-term access. If visits happen now they happen on an ad-hoc commercial basis. It is a glaring hole.”
The United States, by contrast, has built up an extensive network of full bases – Japan, Guam and Diego Garcia – buttressed by formal security alliances and access and repair agreements with friendly countries, including strategic ports in Singapore and Malaysia.
While China is building up its fortified holdings on islands and reefs in the disputed South China Sea, its most significant southernmost base remains on Hainan Island, still some 3,000 nautical miles away from where Chinese warships have been searching for missing Malaysia airlines flight MH370.
Military attaches say foreign port access is relatively easy to arrange during peace-time humanitarian efforts – such as the search for MH370 or during anti-piracy patrols off the Horn of Africa – but moments of tension or conflict are another matter.
“If there was real tension and the risk of conflict between China and a U.S. ally in East Asia, then it is hard to imagine Chinese warships being allowed to enter Australian ports for re-supply,” said one Beijing-based analyst who watches China’s naval build-up.
“We are pragmatic and we know there are sensitivities surrounding these kinds of discussions, or even historic suspicions in some places, so the time is probably not right just yet,” he said.
“I expect to see more friendship visits, and on-going access on a request basis. Then there is the issue of making sure the facilities can meet our needs.”
Operationally, long-range deployments such as the anti-piracy patrols and the search for wreckage of MH370 have proved important logistical learning curves, he added.
Potential blue-water deployments of future air-craft carrier strike groups further complicates China’s logistical outlook.
China’s first carrier, the Liaoning, a Soviet-era ship bought from Ukraine in 1998 and re-built in a Chinese shipyard, is being used for training and is not yet fully operational.
Regional military attaches and analysts said it could be decades before China was able to compete with U.S. carriers, if at all.
Tai Ming Cheung, director of the U.C. Institute of Global Conflict and Co-operation at the University of California, described the MH370 search as a “major learning moment” for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and could lead to a push from its top brass to develop global power-projection capabilities.
The PLA covers all arms of the military, including the navy.
Chinese officials and analysts have bristled at suggestions by Western and Indian counterparts that Beijing is attempting to create a so-called “string of pearls” by funding port developments across the Indian Ocean, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Nor is the base at Woody Island in the Paracels further north, where China is expanding a runway and harbor.

This third webinar in the series 'CCS in Developing Countries' was presented by the World Bank.
Deploying CCS in developing countries is critically important. The International Energy Agency estimates that to achieve global emissions reduction targets 70% of CCS projects will be in non-OECD countries by 2050.
CCS faces a number of challenges, in all countries, but particularly in developing countries. This webinar discussed some of these challenges and barriers using South Africa as a case study. South Africa is working towards a Test Injection Project and subsequently a Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project. The World Bank considered it important to understand a set of constraints, including regulatory, technical, economic, human capacity, etc. to realization of CCS demonstration and commercialization, and how the CCS development will look like in the South African context, out to 2050. A techno-economic assessment has been undertaken to gain this understanding.
The techno-economic assessment explored CCS deployment in six relevant industries in South Africa, and assessed projected scenarios associated with key issues of interest (such as cost, impact on electricity prices, timeframes etc). The key output from the techno-economic study was a techno-economic model, supported by the data sets, specifically for South Africa. The potential storage site capacity has been analysed to provide a strong indication of the likely storage capacity available within physical and economic constraints.

Global Problems of Population Growth (MCDB 150)
By 1950, in most of the underdeveloped world, mortality had fallen to about half its pre-modern rate. The birth rate, however, had remained high and, by 1950, was about twice the death rate. For the rest of the century, both rates fell dramatically and in parallel, maintaining the gap. The enormous excess of births over deaths in this period is known as 'the population explosion.' By 1990, the world population was growing at almost 90 million a year. Comparing the Demographic Transition in Europe and in the currently developing countries, the latter started 100 years later at a much lower economic level, fell from much higher birth and death rates, occurred much faster and with a much higher population growth rate, and added vastly more people. The developing countries saw the benefits that had accrued to the West as a result of the transition and then rapidly appropriated it for themselves. But while European countries may have quadrupled their population over 200 years, third world countries grew by as much as ten times in a much shorter period and they are still growing at a rapid rate. The problems of this rapid growth (still about 80 million a year) abound. The traditional scourges of starvation (9 million deaths a year), disease (AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria -- all claim between 1 and 2 million deaths per year) and war (Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs ~200,000 deaths) are all far too small to stabilize population. People in developing countries who want to limit their fertility, are often afraid of contraceptives (especially side-effects) and yet are willing to undergo horrendously dangerous illegal abortions to avert a childbirth.

How much profit is fair? To find out more and get teaching resources, go to www.whypoverty.net
Rüschlikon is a village in Switzerland with a very low tax rate and very wealthy residents. But it receives more tax revenue than it can use. This is largely thanks to one resident - Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, whose copper mines in Zambia are not generating a large bounty tax revenue for the Zambians. Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, but 60% of the population live on less than $1 a day and 80% are unemployed. Based on original research into public documents, the film describes the tax system employed by multinational companies in Africa.
