ATN X-Sight Day/Night Scope! Nightvision on a Budget
The ATN X-sight is a digital day and night capable rifle scope available in a 3-12 power and 5-18 power variant sharing the same electronics. Built around an Obsidian core processor, the X-Sight behaves as much as a GPS-enabled video camera as it does a gun sight.
In addition to allowing you to switch between day and night vision modes as needed, the X-Sight can record through-scope video and ta

Prepper NIght Vision - Affordable Options?
The number one thing I wish I had in my WROL situation was night vision. Today, the old technologies are affordable and digital night vision has been added as an option as well. Are these worth the price or is it better to save (a lot) of pennies for Gen 3 devices?
Here I look at a couple of options I have found. Both would have worked in my situation so I believe they are worth it. They are no w

In addition to allowing you to switch between day and night vision modes as needed, the X-Sight can record through-scope video and take still photos for storage on a micro SDCard. Under the same water resistant cap as the micro SD slot, the X-Sight has micro USB and Micro HDMI outputs for remote access and viewing, even in real time.
The X-Sight also provides a digital compass and GPS geotagging to help with navigation as well as to allow you to display where you’ve been on a map. Though I have not used this feature yet, I can see how it could be handy when combined with arial photos in determining where best to hunt your next time out.
ATN includes an 850 milliwatt infrared illuminator, which is necessary when ambient light drops below a certain point. It is adjustable for focus, brightness, and aim and comes with an integrated toolless Picatinny mount. This is so you can mount it directly on the X-Sight’s own Picatinny rail section or anywhere else you might have Picatinny on your weapon.

They are no where close to what the military uses today, but they are fine if you want to just be able to see without being seen.

Describes advantages and disadvantages of night vision technologies
Night vision goggles and scopes make images from visible light, just like your eyes. So, their familiar green-cast images provide excellent situational awareness at night. Unfortunately, magnifying the amount of light in an image is only part of the solution to true night vision.
The critical element they don't address is visible image contrast. That's what you really need to be able to see at night. When a target is brighter than its surroundings it has good visual contrast, and is easy to see.
When a target doesn't have good visual contrast you can't distinguish it from its surroundings. No night vision scope can reveal contrast that's just not there.
Thermal cameras see heat, not light. The more heat an object gives off the more thermal contrast it generates, and the easier it is to see.
Everything on Earth gives off heat, and things like people, animals, and car engines lots of heat. So their easy to see, even through camouflage.
Atmospheric conditions, like smoke, rain, or fog, reflect light, making night vision goggles and scopes even less effective. But thermal cameras see through these obscurants and clearly.
Night vision goggles and scopes also need to have the right amount of light to work well. If light levels are too low, like in rural areas and when looking into deep shadows, they won't be able to see anything.
If there's too much light, from street lights, security lights, or car lights, they become over-saturated. Thermal cameras have none of these limitations. That's why airborne law enforcement units and special operations forces around the world choose FLIR when they need to see hard to find targets at night.
wn.com/Night Vision Versus Thermal Imaging
Describes advantages and disadvantages of night vision technologies
Night vision goggles and scopes make images from visible light, just like your eyes. So, their familiar green-cast images provide excellent situational awareness at night. Unfortunately, magnifying the amount of light in an image is only part of the solution to true night vision.

How Does Night Vision Work?
Sure, night vision looks cool in the movies - but what is it, exactly? How can a scope or a pair of goggles help you see in near-absolute darkness?

So night vision seems like a pretty cool idea, right? I mean, you see it all the time in movies. Some secret agent-type straps on a pair of goggles, sneaks onto a luxurious supervillain compound and mows down enemies under the cover of darkness.
Or the Predator stalks Arnold Schwarzenegger, killing his platoon one, by one, by one… And as you’re watching all this, you may occasionally ask yourself “Hey, do those goofy-looking goggles really work?”
The answer is yes. Absolutely. With a good night vision device, or NVD, you can see a person standing over 200 yards (183 m) away on a moonless, cloudy night.
And whether we’re talking goggles, scopes or cameras, most of these devices rely on one of two types of night vision: image enhancement (that’s the green-looking one) and thermal imaging, which is the bluish-gray stuff. They both produce results, but work in different ways.
Thermal imaging captures the upper portion of the infrared light spectrum. Objects emit this as heat rather than reflecting it as light. Hotter objects – such as the bodies of secret agents – emit more of this light than cooler objects, like buildings, trees or, you know, dead bodies. And that’s what you’re seeing when you use thermal imaging, essentially. A measure of temperature from -4 degrees Farenheit to 3,600 F.
The magic (well, you know, science) starts at the lens, which focuses the infrared light emitted by all of the objects in view and uses a phased array of infrared-detector elements to create a temperature pattern called a thermogram, which is translated first into electric impulses, and then into data for the display, where it appears as various colors depending on the intensity of the infrared.
Then there’s image enhancement. This collects tiny amounts of light, including the lower portion of the infrared light spectrum, and amplifies it.
Image enhancers use a photocathode to convert photons into electrons, and high voltage to amplify those electrons in a microchannel plate, or MCP, before they hit a screen coated with phosophors.
Here’s the crazy part – these electrons maintain their position in relation to the microchannel they passed through, which provides a perfect image since the electrons stay in the same alignment as the original photons. When they hit the screen, their energy excites the phosphors, releasing photons. Those phosphors create the green image you see when you look through a night vision scope.
Night vision devices have been around for more than 40 years, and they’ve gone through multiple improvements. Today they’re used for everything from military applications to navigation and wildlife observation.
