Burao (var. Bur'o) (Somali: Burco, Arabic: برعو) is a city in the northwestern Burao District of Somaliland, an unrecognized self-declared republic internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia, and serves as the capital of Togdheer province.
Burao is one of a series of ancient settlements in northern Somalia. Burial sites near the town feature a number of old stelae.
Burao was the site of the unilateral and internationally unrecognized declaration of an independent Somaliland on May 18, 1991.
Like many other cities in Somaliland, Burao has been rebuilt with limited outside aid since the outbreak of the civil war in the early 1990s. The town has grown considerably on account of investment by the Somaliland diaspora and people from rural areas moving to the city.
Burao's population has greatly increased over the years. Today, the city has a total population of 288,211 residents.
As of November 1994, the main residents of Burao are the Habar Yoonis and the Habar Jeclo, subdivisions of the larger Isaaq Somali clan.

November 28, 2013, Burao - The investment by the United Kingdom in one of the biggest and most modern slaughterhouses in Somalia will significantly contribute towards improving Somalia's ailing meat industry, which has seen little development for the last two decades. Burao is located in the Horn of Africa region where livestock forms the basis of rural economy and livelihoods. Addressing a gathering at a handover ceremony in Burao, Abdirahman Zeilici, Somaliland's Vice President described the facility as "the best opportunity for Somalis to explore exporting meat after years of exporting live animals to the Middle East." In 2012, Somalia exported 4.7 million animals to the Gulf States, a trade that has grown exponentially since 2009 when Saudi Arabia lifted a 9-year ban on livestock from ...

Hussein is one of the millions of Somalis living abroad. Came to the country in 2010 - three years ago - and then bases his work on a farm in the town of Burao. This video is a visual motivation that I hope that everyone looks out of the country to see deeply into his mother's home.

A video and picture impression of a recent trip through South Togdheer, Somaliland, assessing the drought situation.
Every year, the breakaway republic of Somaliland exports huge amounts of livestock to Saudi Arabia to feed the millions of Muslim faithful making their pilgrimage to Mecca. Jason Patinkin follows this epic trade from rural markets to the port of Berbera. Originally published at - http://www.voanews.com/a/3489287.html
Somalia is one of the very special parts of the dry tropics. It is a vast expanse of seasonally arid land very close to the equator. Though it is dry and often referred to as desert, Somalia instead has a very rich tropical flora. The rainy season can often be severe in places and sometimes accompanied by tragic flooding.

A menhir (French, from Middle Breton: men, "stone" and hir, "long"), standing stone, orthostat, or lith is a large upright standing stone. Menhirs may be found singly as monoliths, or as part of a group of similar stones. Their size can vary considerably, but their shape is generally uneven and squared, often tapering towards the top. Menhirs are widely distributed across Europe, Africa and Asia, but are most numerous in Western Europe; in particular in Ireland, Great Britain and Brittany. There are about 50,000 megaliths in these areas, while there are 1,200 menhirs in northwest France alone. Standing stones are usually difficult to date, but pottery found underneath some in Atlantic Europe connects them with the Beaker people. They were constructed during many different periods across pr...

Officially part of Somalia, but unofficially a sovereign nation, a bit like Iraqi Kurdistan; it is not recognised by the international community. A huge portion of the infrastructure was destroyed during the civil war, meaning there's little to see tourism-wise. However, the people are wonderfully friendly, and are committed to building a free, independent state.
