Antidepressants Zoloft and Paxil Linked to Increased Birth Defects Risk
Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the British Medical Journal (BMJ) have found that women who use the antidepressants Zoloft or Paxil during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to a child with birth defects than users of other antidepressants.
Paxil and Zoloft users are also more likely to give birth to a child with heart defects, including atrial and ventricular septal defects, ventricular outflow tract obstruction defects, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) and many others. The two antidepressants have also been linked to a number of non-heart-related birth defects, including craniosynostosis and omphalocele.
