NORTH KOREA has closed its borders in fear of the spread of the Ebola virus. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards.

Australian filmmaker Mark Shea (http://www.overlander.tv) takes a trip to North Korea (The People's Democratic Republic of Korea) with Young Pioneer Tours. http://dprk.youngpioneertours.com
Listening to the news, watching hatchet job videos on youtube, anyone would believe North Korea was a dangerous place to visit. I myself as a travel video producer was a little concerned before entering, afraid my camera equipment would be confiscated at the border. Instead what I found was a country just starting to open to tourism. I was treated like royalty and allowed to pretty much film anything I wanted, other than groups of soldiers.
At the moment, to visit the DPRK one must go with a tour company. I myself went with Young Pioneer Tours who run small group tours for westerners at a budget price. The other options are going with a Chinese tour which are larger and, from what I saw, tend to rush groups through locations quicker. Young Pioneer Tours work in North Korea with two local guides. They have been running tours to North Korea since 2008, so they know how the DPRK works better than anyone. The tours are highly organised and, as tourism is a relatively new endeavour, tend to focus on viewing sites more than interacting with locals. For someone who makes travel videos focusing on meeting the locals, this was a new experience for me, but I still found there were plenty of chances to chat with our guides and various other guides throughout the tour.
The first thing that hits you when you travel by train into North Korea is how lush and green it is, every available space is used to grow food such as corn and rice. It looks like an agrarian wonderland, hills of rolling green dotted with small villages. On closer inspection, one notices the lack of machinery, the ox and cart, everything from cutting grass to ploughing fields, done by hand. The contrast with the enormity of China is startling.
Arriving in the capital Pyongyang, the next thing to hit you, is the lack of cars, no roadblocks, no bottlenecks, just wide open boulevards. The footpaths on the other hand are full of people, walking, riding bikes, always on the move. The public transport system includes electric buses and a two line subway system.
Our tour took in three main locations; sites around the capital -- Pyongyang, Kaesong -- the capital of Korea during the Koryo Dynasty and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)
I'm not going to go into every detail of the tour, but there were many highlights. In each location we were given ample opportunity to take any photos we pleased (apart from photographing groups of military)
Highlights for me in Pyongyang included the amazing murals and statues. I particularly liked the quirky 'music room' full of boomboxes in the Grand People's Study House.
Kaesong, the ancient capital of Korea, is like a tourism boom town waiting to happen. It did not escape me that we were the only group walking the quaint cobbled streets surrounded by traditional houses. Visiting the museum and learning of the history of the Koryo period, I thought to recent history, political movements, and how only sixty years have made the two Korea's, North and South, so distinguishable.
The demilitarised zone really took me by surprise. I was expecting stern faced soldiers ready for attack. Instead I discovered bus loads of Chinese tourists, snapping photos with obliging soldiers.
I'd read a fair bit about North Korea before I traveled there, I'm well aware of it's problems. But I also believe tourism can have positive effects on a country. What we are seeing in North Korea is a change, a change I believe will be for the better.
There is a lot you won't be able to talk about with your North Korean Guides on current tours and there is a lot of the country you won't see. BUT if you want to see a country like nothing else on earth, at a fascinating stage in history, North Korea is well and truly open for tourism!
Be quick, the winds of change blow strong in the year of a Rising Dragon.

According to Xinhua, Jiang Chaoliang, governor of China's northeastern Jilin province, said the province would draw up a blueprint for the Tumen River Delta international tourism area this year.
The Tumen River divides China and North Korea.
Xinhua said officials are exploring a management model of the tourism zone that would involve China, Russia and North Korea. Xinhua said, citing officials, that visitors shall enter the tourism zone without visas and shopping shall be duty-free.
Xinhua said, citing Zhao Xiaojun, director of Jilin Provincial Tourism Administration, that in the long run, South Korea, Japan and Mongolia will join the tourism area via highways, railways and air routes.

Today is the day North Korea threatened to launch a mid-range missile test, but as of early this morning, things appeared normal along the North Korea border. But rival South Korea has taken precaution, suspending activities at the Kaesong industrial zone for the second day in a row. The zone was the one remaining place of cooperation between South and North Korea.
Chinese travel agents have also said they were unable to bring tour groups into the North on Wednesday. It follows earlier reports by South Korea media that the Chinese regime would stop some tourism to its communist ally.
Beijing is growing increasingly concerned over Pyongyang's recent provocations. Cutting off tourism would mean depriving much-needed income to North Korea, because tourists have to use foreign currency, cash and travel to government-run sites.
Pyongyang has warned it could not guarantee the safety of foreigners in the city from Wednesday onwards. It says it's taking action against "hostile" US troop exercises with South Korea, and UN sanctions over its nuclear test in February.
South Korea has asked China to rein in its volatile neighbor. The Chinese regime is the North's only major ally, and its main source of financial support.

The U.S. envoy on North Korean human rights is urging Pyongyang to free three American detainees held in the country... if it wants to spur international tourism.
In a column published in the Washington Post on Wednesday,... Robert King said releasing the U.S. citizens would be the start of reducing the risk of traveling to North Korea.
He said there′s little doubt the Americans are being used by the North for propaganda purposes to encourage the U.S. to send a high-level official.
Victor Cha, the Korea Chair for Washington-based think tank CSIS, meanwhile says... the U.S. government should impose a travel ban on North Korea until the detainees are freed.

Workers' Party of Korea, 조선로동당, 朝鮮勞動黨:
The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) is the founding and ruling political party of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The WPK is the sole governing party of North Korea, although it coexists with two other legal parties making up the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. It was founded in 1949 with the merger of the Workers' Party of North Korea and the Workers' Party of South Korea.
The WPK is organized according to the Monolithic Ideological System and the Great Leader, a system and theory conceived by Kim Yong-ju and Kim Jong-il. The highest body of the WPK is formally the Congress; however, a congress has not been convened since the 6th in 1980. Although the WPK is (in theory) organizationally similar to communist parties, in practice it is far less institutionalized and informal politics plays a larger role than usual. Institutions such as the Central Committee, the Secretariat, the Central Military Commission (CMC), the Politburo and the Presidium have much less power than that formally bestowed on them by the party's charter. Kim Jong-un is the current WPK leader, serving as First Secretary and CMC chairman.
The WPK is committed to Juche, and at the 4th Conference (held in 2012) the party charter was amended to state that Kimilsungism–Kimjongilism was "the only guiding idea of the party". At the 3rd Conference (held in 2010) the WPK removed a sentence from the preamble expressing the party's commitment "to building a communist society", replacing it with a new adherence to songun (military-first politics). Party ideology has recently focused on perceived imperialist enemies of the party and state, and on explaining the Kim family's dominance of the political system. Nevertheless, the party continues to participate in the International Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties each year.

Yes, North Korea makes cars, and here are the latest models.
The United States has Ford. Germany has Volkswagen. Japan has Toyota. And North Korea has Pyeonghwa Motors.
Run by Kim Jong-un's regime, the company produces a tiny number of vehicles at its factory in the city of Nampo, a seaport on North Korea’s west coast. At its sole dealership in the capital Pyongyang, visitors can view its lineup up close, take a test drive and even purchase spare parts.

When I found myself in one of the most isolated and mysterious countries on the planet naturally the first thing I noticed was the profound assortment of vehicles in the airport parking lot. Behind the wall of mines and propaganda in North Korea are still people, and many people still like cars.
There was a white United Nations-outfitted G-Wagon with a manual transmission and rubberized interior; an unidentifiable prehistoric-looking squad of military vehicles I had never seen before (or even read about) and to top it off a row of three blacked-out Porsche Cayennes sat in the corner of the small lot.

Pyeonghwa Motors
Pyeonghwa Motors (Hangul : 평화자동차) (Hancha : 平和自動車), a Korean language word for "peace", also spelled Pyonghwa, is one of the two car manufacturers and dealers in North Korean automotive industry. It is a joint venture in Nampo between Pyonghwa Motors of Seoul (South Korea), a company owned by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, and the North Korean Ryonbong General Corp. The joint venture produces small cars under licence from Fiat and Brilliance China Auto, a pickup truck and an SUV using complete knock down kits from Chinese manufacturer Dandong Shuguang, and a luxury car of Mercedes-Benz/SsangYong design.
Pyeonghwa has the exclusive rights to car production, purchase, and sale of used cars in North Korea. However, most North Koreans are unable to afford a car. Because of the very small market for cars in the country, Pyeonghwa's output is reportedly very low. In 2003, only 314 cars were produced even though the factory had the facilities to produce up to 10,000 cars a year. Erik van Ingen Schenau, author of the book Automobiles Made in North Korea, has estimated the company's total production in 2005 at not more than around 400 units.

In the early-20th century, after Korea enjoyed a short period of independence, the country endured the Russo-Japanese War over control of the area. Finally, in 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan. However, by the end of World War II – when a defeated Japan ceded power over Korea to the Allies – tensions had risen between the Soviet and Chinese Communist-backed Northern section and the United States-supported Southern half. When a resolution was not found by 1948, the country was officially split along the 38th parallel, creating the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – or DPRK – in the north and the Republic of Korea in the south. Residual friction and the existing Cold War resulted in the beginning of the Korean War on June 25th, 1950. Since the war’s cease fire in 1953, South Korea has evolved into a more liberal and democratic nation, while North Korea is generally considered to be ruled via dictatorship, with control passed down from generation to generation.

There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.

Last October, a book unlike any other about North Korea was released in the United States. "Without You, There Is No Us" is Korean-American author Suki Kim′s account of her half-year stay in North Korea as an English teacher. The book received overwhelming praise upon its publication, and in January of 2015, was released in South Korea.
Since 2002, when Suki Kim began working as a freelance journalist, she has made several visits to North Korea. But it wasn′t until the summer of 2011 that she entered the country with the intention of working undercover as an English teacher at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. She witnessed firsthand the conditions and routine of everyday life of the children of high-ranking North Korean officials, gleaning an inside experience of a notoriously secluded state.
Suki Kim emigrated to the U.S. with her parents at a young age, going on to study English Literature at Columbia University and East Asian Literature at SOAS, University of London. In 2003, her first full-length novel, "The Interpreter," was published to positive reviews from American literary circles.
This week on [Heart to Heart], we talk to author Suki Kim about her unparalleled story of life in North Korea

An art journey to North Korea:
On May 17, 2012, Norwegian director and artist Morten Traavik organized the first ever Norwegian cultural festival in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, on the national day of Norway, invited by and in close collaboration with North Korean cultural authorities.
"Yes, We Love this Country" is the title of the Norwegian national anthem, as well as the name Traavik chose for the festival in Pyongyang. This documentary puts the viewer in the middle of the controversial project and forces viewers to make up their own minds on whether it is right or wrong to engage in a country widely derided as one of the most brutal regimes in the world.

North Korea state television has broadcast video of Kim Jong-un and his wife meeting former NBA basketball player Dennis Rodman.
The heavily tattooed former All-star arrived in Pyongyang on Monday for his fourth trip to North Korea in 12 months, together with an assembled team of other former NBA players including Doug Christie, Craig Hodges and Charles Smith, for the exhibition game.
North Korea state television broadcast video on Thursday of Dennis Rodman meeting Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju ahead of a basketball game to honour the leader's birthday.
In the video, Rodman can be seen in a conservative grey suit smiling and laughing as he meets the couple and exchanges words.
Following the meeting, Rodman later sang Happy Birthday to the North Korean leader at the basketball game.
Rodman is the highest-profile American to meet Kim Jong-un, who inherited power after the death of his father in late 2011. Rodman has said he is not a statesman and instead is seeking only to build cultural connections with the North through basketball that may help improve relations between Pyongyang and Washington.

Parade pageantry in Pyongyang: N. Korea marks 60 yrs since Korean War armistice
North Korea has staged a huge parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War. Soldiers and military hardware paraded through Pyongyang in a carefully choreographed display. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, although the North and South remain technically at war.

Launching Balloons into North Korea: Propaganda Over Pyongyang
North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda.
With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014,

North Korea has staged a huge parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War. Soldiers and military hardware paraded through Pyongyang in a carefully choreographed display. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, although the North and South remain technically at war.

In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border.
VICE News traveled to Seoul to meet frontline soldiers in this information war — and to attend a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom.

Who could have foreseen that an American orchestra would be performing in North Korea? Who would have believed that music is
capable of bringing people together who are supposed to be bitter enemies? Can music play a role in the political game?
The film Americans in Pyongyang accompanies members of the New York Philharmonic on its historic trip to North Korea´s capital, Pyongyang. This trip was by no means a simple one. Many concerns and doubts arose just before departing for the most inaccessible country in the world – a country that consistently violates human rights and that has been categorized by George W. Bush as a key member in the “axis of evil“. The documentary by Ayelet Heller is not a political manifesto but a story about people who are brought a little closer to each other by virtue of music. Americans in Pyongyang shows, almost non-verbally, that music
knows no borders and that it can reach and melt hearts and unite people. The 48-hour trip was memorable to all involved: Korean and American musicians meet on stage for the first time, performing together with technical brilliance, hardly speaking,
just exchanging quick glances and communicating with body language. One of the musicians said: “Something profound has happened between two peoples. It was astounding.“

An American tourist's independent tour of North Korea in May 2010. This is 2 of 4 Videos total, for almost 5 hrs of footage. North Korea allows a 21st Century visitor to time travel back to China during the Cultural Revolution or to Russia during Stalin. WARNING: Some governments advise against all travel to North Korea due to the uncertain security situation caused by North Korea’s nuclear weapons development program and highly authoritarian and unpredictable regime.
Though there is little evidence of safety issues concerning tourists on organized expeditions, those planning to engage in activities that the North Korean government forbids must be prepared to face severe consequences.
Under no circumstances are you to say anything that could be perceived as an insult to or critical of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-Il, Kim Jong-Un, the Juche ideology, the Songun policy, the ruling Worker's Party of Korea, the North Korean government in general, or the citizens of North Korea. Simply avoid these topics if you can.

South Korea, located on the peninsula between Japan and China, is a nation of contradictions. You’ll find an ancient culture that goes back thousands of years, bolstered by high-tech industries and glowing modern cities. These elements, seemingly at odds, often mix together to create a truly unique experience.
Your Korea tour begins with Seoul, a mega-city full of theatres, casinos, restaurants, and pubs. If you love shopping, you’re in luck: Korea loves nothing better than offering a chance for some good purchases. Entire districts are devoted to stores, vendors, and malls, so make sure your credit card is ready to go.
If you’re engaging in some sightseeing in Korea, you can’t go wrong with a dedicated visit to the many temples and palaces that dot the country. Many of these sacred locations are adorned with ponds, moats, and trees, allowing you to get back in touch with nature while you explore this nation’s vast history.
Stop by the museums and galleries of your choice to get a taste of the local modern culture. You’ll find fine art, eccentric modern pieces, and everything in between—and best of all, you can stop for delicious Korean food on just about any corner.

Travel video about destination Seoul in South Korea.
Founded in 1394, Seoul is both the cultural and economic centre of South Korea and with 12 million inhabitants, it is also the 5th largest city in the world.
A huge monument commemorates the Korean War during which, between 1950 and 1953, around 400,000 people were killed. At that time, the United States of America and 20 other countries took part in a United Nations military operation to support South Korea against the forces of North Korea and China.
In 1988, the 24th Olympic Games took place in Seoul and for this, the Olympic Park was created, a huge area with a monument at its entrance and 200 sculptures that adorn various paths, designed to highlight Korea's global connection with the rest of the world.
At the end of the 18th century, the Hwaseong Fortress was built, now a World Heritage Sight. The fortress extends for 130 hectares and the distance from one main gate to the other is such that a dragon train is available for those who prefer not to walk.
In 1969, the N Seoul Tower was built to provide South Korea with TV and radio signals. Seoul's main landmark is 236 metres high and is equipped with several high speed elevators, as well as an observation platform and observatory.
Historic buildings, palaces, shrines and bridges all serve to underline the ultra modern appearance of Seoul, a mega city in the Land of the Silent Morning.

Travel video about destination South-Korea.
South Korea is a land of ancient tradition and contemporary life, a fascinating world…with five thousand years of history. Seoul is the country’s economic and cultural centre, a metropolis of twelve million inhabitants who are proud of their ancient culture. The War Museum is a reminder of the Forgotten War when the United States of America and twenty other countries took part in a United Nations military operation to support South Korea against the forces North Korea and China. Thirty kilometres south of Seoul is the fortress town of Suwon where at the end of the eighteenth century the Hwaseong Fortress was built, now a World Heritage Sight. South Korea’s most famous monastery is located in the Gaya-San National Park. Today the complex and its ninety buildings have become one of the main Buddhist centres in the East.. Tumuli Park is situated in the centre of Kyong Ju, former capital of the Silla Kingdom and contains twenty three royal tombs that look from the outside like large green hills. A huge number of valuable finds were made here thus the National Museum was created in which more than a hundred and fifty thousand exhibits from prehistoric times right up to the Joseon Dynasty are on display. Jeju island is a unique holiday paradise, a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tea plantations and several leisure facilities. For Koreans as well as the Japanese, Jeju Island has, due to its tropical climate, become a very popular honeymoon destination. When during dinner a volcano erupts and laser gods battle against each other, the Korean people are reminded of the fact that they have withstood invasion by the Mongols, Chinese and Japanese. At the climax of the show a fiery dragon appears: his sole task to protect glorious South Korea!

Train travel from China to Cult Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. May 2010. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of NK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and fertile regions. These videos give people thinking about visiting NK an overview of what they will see there (A variety of tours are offered but itineraries are often similar). These videos are neither truncated nor narrated. Footage is exclusive to regions in N. Korea where the elite population resides. Therefore you will not see how the majority of N. Koreans live, with oppression, famine, lack of human rights and medical care, or the most unfortunate 150,000 political victims living in Soviet Gulag/Nazi Concentration style camps.
South Korea maintains a cowardly and disturbing indifference to the large scale atrocities occurring in North Korea. In the 60 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula, South Korweakens have lost their sense of unity and urgency.
S. Korea has overwhelming military and non-military options if it wanted the Northern regime to collapse. It does not need to wait forever on the the vastly useless and toothless UN to solve South Korea's problem. Yet, the SK government and inhabitants are shockingly content with maintaining their segregation due to the massive financial costs of rebuilding the North's infrastructure and rehabilitating a mentally/physically stunted and uneducated population. Even though the reunification costs increases each year, the Holocaust stays alive because information connected South Korea ignores the suffering when they are morally responsible and fully capable of taking back their own country.
The S. Korean government downplays the N. Korean human rights abuses and over-hypes North Korea's military capacity to discourage citizens from talking about the necessity of freeing Korea. South Korea has 50 times greater GDP and generations more advance military, yet cowers to a starving, impoverished country with antique armaments.
N. Korean refugees are not warmly received in S. Korean society. South Korea does not voice opposition to China's illegal forced repatriation of N. Korean refugees, of which there may be over 100,000. When men, women and children are repatriated back to North Korea, they face cruel punishment and imprisonment, or if they had communicated with Westerners or religious groups, they are tortured and/or executed. Yet, this does not concern or alarm the prosperous South Koreans. North Korean lives are dispensable to them.
And this is all great news for tourists wanting to see a Stalinist/Maoist country in the 21st century. So no need to rush, you still have plenty of time to visit. The UN is powerless, and South Korea is spineless. If you want to help North Korean civilians, I recommend visiting HRNK (The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea) and the UK Manna Mission of Europe (which operates bakeries to feed NK children).

An American tourist's independent tour of North Korea in May 2010. This is 2 of 4 Videos total, for almost 5 hrs of footage. North Korea allows a 21st Century visitor to time travel back to China during the Cultural Revolution or to Russia during Stalin. I recommend a visit there to see this bizarre country: it's open to almost everyone and is extremely safe for tourists. The tour Company I used is Young Pioneer Tours. They are not very organized but do offer younger, smaller group sizes which I like. If you are more risk adverse and prefer a well-run, stress free tour company, and can live with an older, larger group size, Koyro Tours, a British owned tour company based in Beijing, is highly recommended and they do a great job.
A big disclaimer with these videos: I went as a tourist and this is a propaganda tour. This is not representative of most of North Korea. This is their Disney World I saw: look for real hidden video that is smuggled out of the country before drawing any conclusions.
And one more thing, Shame on South Koreans for allowing the North Korean regime to continue existing. This is even more tragic than the Holocaust, because South Korea knows exactly what is happening there and yet they allow their enslaved brothers and sisters to suffer and perish in silence.
4/30/2010
Set off from Beijing Train Station to Dandong, China. Train passage to North Korea is the best way to see the countryside and get to know some elite North Korean passengers, without your Govt. minders present. Americans have to fly into the capitol however (unless you have dual citizenship).
4/31/2010
Arrive in Pyongyang by train. Meet with Government Minders who serve as the tour guides (two of them) and who rarely leave your side. There is also a separate driver.
Drive to Yanggakdo Hotel and discuss itinerary for the trip. This is a very large high-rise hotel on its own little island in Pyongyang. The hotel is one of about 3 that foreigners stay at in the city. It's nice, very quiet: and it's difficult to leave the hotel grounds without having a guard pointing you back.

Tourism in North Korea is organized by one of several state-owned tourism bureaus, including Korea International Travel Company (KITC), Korean International Sports Travel Company (KISTC) and Korean International Youth Travel Company (KIYTC). Tourism in North Korea is highly controlled by the government, which is one of the reasons it is not a frequently visited destination—about 1,500 Western tourists visit North Korea each year, along with thousands of Asians.[1]
Tourists must go on guided tours. As of June 2011, the northern border to China has been opened and Chinese citizens are free to drive their own vehicles to Luo, a small North Korean northeast border region where they are free to explore, mingle and photograph. This is seen as a first step towards expanded tourism and development in that region. Photography and interaction with local people has historically been tightly controlled,[1] however, from photos seen around the internet and evidence from travelers to the DPRK, those restrictions seem to have been relaxed slightly in the past few years.[2] As of January 2013, foreigners are allowed to buy SIM cards at Pyongyang airport,[3] providing access to international calling.[4]
For westerners, there are a handful of private tour operators that help provide access to the country. Well known amongst these operators are Uri Tours (recently in the news for their role in the Dennis Rodman and Eric Schmidt trips to the DPRK),[5] Koryo Tours (known for its DPRK-related films and strong history in the region) and Young Pioneer Tours (traditionally aimed at the budget traveler).[6] Companies like these are full-service shops that will take care of visas, flights, etc. for a single fee.[7][8][9] Since December 2013, North Korea has been open to tourists during the winter. The Masikryong Ski Resort outside Wonsan City in Kangwon Province opened in early 2014.
