Jack the Ripper is the best-known name given to an unidentified serial killer who was active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The name originated in a letter, written by someone claiming to be the murderer, that was disseminated in the media. The killer was known as "The Whitechapel Murderer" as well as "Leather Apron". Between August and November 1888, the Whitechapel area of London was the scene of five brutal murders. All the women murdered were prostitutes, and all except for one - Elizabeth Stride - were horribly mutilated.

Just the name "Jack The Ripper" conjures up visions of old cobble stones streets, mystery and the eerie feel of the dark alleys in Whitechapel, London. Thats because in the 1800s a serial killer was terrorising the streets and even now well over a 100 years after the events, the killings are still widely talked about and thats because Jack the Rippers murders where never solved and who exactly he/she was is still one of the worlds biggest mysteries in crime.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Jack The Ripper. The mystery about Jack the Ripper and the killers identity still exists to this day. Many suspects, few clues, very little answers...
5. Eyewitnesses And Clues
The common notion that Jack the Ripper killed silently and departed without a trace is a myth. Specifically, he left clues to his identity and location when he killed Catherine Eddowes. Joseph Lawende was walking along with two others around 1:35am on the night of her murder. He saw a man with a woman he identified as Eddowes (from her clothing), and later described him to The Times as “of shabby appearance, about 30 years of age and 5ft. 9in. in height. Eddowes was dead 10 minutes after she was spotted with the man.
4. The Best-Known Suspects Are Ridiculous
Want to know who Jack the Ripper wasn’t? Prince Albert Victor. As grandson of Queen Victoria, his name comes up often as part of a vast conspiracy of sadism and privilege, reaching all the way to the crown itself. The allegation that a prince was killing paupers was first claimed in a 1962 book but IT probably started a bit earlier. While it makes a good story, it’s simply not possible: The Prince was nowhere near London when the murders occurred.
3. Modern Research Might Solve This Case
As of now we don’t have the information to determine who was Jack the Ripper, but it was modern research by amateur sleuths that discovered inconsistencies in their testimonies, and that of some other suspicious “witnesses.” Many important documents and clues were seized as souvenirs, at the time of the murders and later by Ripperologists. When these documents come to light over the coming years, we may finally be able to solve the biggest murder mystery of the last 200 years.
2. His "type"
Jack the Ripper didn’t just kill at random. Like modern serial killers, he had a “type.” Four of the five canonical victims were approximately the same age—late 30s to 40s. His highly specific method of killing is stated in the last entry. He struck on weekends or bank holidays. And obviously the reason he’s so well remembered—besides never being caught—is the graphic nature of the wounds, they all had some pelvic mutilation.
1. His Number Of Victims
It is generally accepted by Ripperologists that there were five murders, known as the canonical five. However, by the time murder #1 occurred, the press already referred to this as “another” murder. Police were still considering murders in 1891 to be courtesy of Jack the Ripper. The murder of Francis Coles on February 13, 1891 was widely believed by the press and authorities to be his work. In all, the press attributed 11 murders to Jack the Ripper.

The plethora of theories as to the killer’s identity, ranging from the famous Victorian painter Walter Sickert to a Polish immigrant and even the grandson of Queen Victoria, have all contributed to a culture of folklore and ghoulish entertainment.
There were a number of suspects, but only three remained under suspicion. Aron Kosinski, was a Polish immigrant, Montague John Druitt, a barrister, and Michael Ostrog, a Russian doctor, who were all maniacs and hated prostitutes.
During the time when Jack the Ripper was gaining notoriety, many prostitutes had been murdered in Whitechapel. Eleven of these were registered by the London Metropolitan Police Service. Of these eleven, it's believed five had the same peculiarities, and were murdered by Jack the Ripper. These five were known as the Canonical Five; their bodies were ripped apart and their organs neatly extracted.
The name “Jack the Ripper” originated in a letter purportedly written by the killer in 1888. However, the letter's authenticity has been highly debated.
According to another theory, maybe Jack wasn’t "Jack" after all, but a woman, which was a theory posed by famed Inspector Frederick Abberline at the time of the killings. According to Donald McCormick, author of The Identity of Jack the Ripper published in 1959, Abberline raised the theory in a conversation with his mentor, Dr. Thomas Dutton after the murder of Mary Kelly. Testimony given by Caroline Maxwell, who lived in the area, was central to the argument.
The harsh reality of that era was that countless “ladies of the night” were subjected to violent attacks, which in some cases resulted in their deaths. According to criminal psychology we learn that serial killers tend to have a very good grasp of other people’s emotions and are quick to pick up on any vulnerability or weakness in order to convince them into doing things they normally wouldn’t. That's why it is believed that Jack the Ripper was probably a kind charmer while approaching his victims.
The East End was a district viewed by respectable London society with either compassion or contempt. Despite being an area where skilled immigrants, mainly Jews and Russians, came to start a new life and build up businesses, the district was notorious for extreme poverty, violence, and crime. According to modern-day criminal investigations, this was the main reason Jack the Ripper picked the specific area to commit his horrendous crimes.
The gruesome murders of prostitutes in Whitechapel caused an uproar in London and people demanded that the police act effectively to solve the case, but nothing could ever be proven about Jack the Ripper’s identity.

Other nicknames used for the killer at the time were "The Whitechapel Murderer" and "Leather Apron".
Attacks ascribed to the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes from the slums whose throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. The removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that their killer possessed anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and October 1888, and letters from a writer or writers purporting to be the murderer were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard. The "From Hell" letter, received by George Lusk of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, included half of a preserved human kidney, supposedly from one of the victims. Mainly because of the extraordinarily brutal character of the murders, and because of media treatment of the events, the public came increasingly to believe in a single serial killer known as "Jack the Ripper".

Hannibal Lecter M.D. is a fictional character in a series of horror novels by Thomas Harris and in the films adapted from them.

The name “Jack the Ripper” originated in a letter purportedly written by the killer in 1888. However, the letter's authenticity has been highly debated. According to another theory, maybe Jack wasn’t "Jack" after all, but a woman, which was a theory posed by famed Inspector Frederick Abberline at the time of the killings. According to Donald McCormick, author of The Identity of Jack the Ripper published in 1959, Abberline raised the theory in a conversation with his mentor, Dr. Thomas Dutton after the murder of Mary Kelly. Testimony given by Caroline Maxwell, who lived in the area, was central to the argument. The harsh reality of that era was that countless “ladies of the night” were subjected to violent attacks, which in some cases resulted in their deaths. According to criminal psychology we learn that serial killers tend to have a very good grasp of other people’s emotions and are quick to pick up on any vulnerability or weakness in order to convince them into doing things they normally wouldn’t. That's why it is believed that Jack the Ripper was probably a kind charmer while approaching his victims. The East End was a district viewed by respectable London society with either compassion or contempt. 1888: Jack The Ripper! - The Canonical Five Victims
In this episode we take a look at the infamous Jack the Ripper and his 5 canonical victims. From 1888 to 1891 its believed the killer had committed eleven separate murders, however its speculated that the deaths may have been at the hands of different killers but there have been five definitive murders linked to Jack the Ripper. Known as the canonical five, the victims were: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. All of the women were brutally mutilated apart from Elizabeth Stride. Throughout a lengthy investigation the police had come up with hundreds of suspects but could never tie the crimes to any of them. Just the name "Jack The Ripper" conjures up visions of old cobble stones streets, mystery and the eerie feel of the dark alleys in Whitechapel, London. Thats because in the 1800s a serial killer was terrorising the streets and even now well over a 100 years after the events, the killings are still widely talked about and thats because Jack the Rippers murders where never solved and who exactly he/she was is still one of the worlds biggest mysteries in crime.

The common notion that Jack the Ripper killed silently and departed without a trace is a myth. Specifically, he left clues to his identity and location when he killed Catherine Eddowes. Joseph Lawende was walking along with two others around 1:35am on the night of her murder. He saw a man with a woman he identified as Eddowes (from her clothing), and later described him to The Times as “of shabby appearance, about 30 years of age and 5ft. 9in. in height. Eddowes was dead 10 minutes after she was spotted with the man.
4. The Best-Known Suspects Are Ridiculous
Want to know who Jack the Ripper wasn’t? Prince Albert Victor. As grandson of Queen Victoria, his name comes up often as part of a vast conspiracy of sadism and privilege, reaching all the way to the crown itself. The allegation that a prince was killing paupers was first claimed in a 1962 book but IT probably started a bit earlier. While it makes a good story, it’s simply not possible: The Prince was nowhere near London when the murders occurred.
3. Modern Research Might Solve This Case
As of now we don’t have the information to determine who was Jack the Ripper, but it was modern research by amateur sleuths that discovered inconsistencies in their testimonies, and that of some other suspicious “witnesses.” Many important documents and clues were seized as souvenirs, at the time of the murders and later by Ripperologists. When these documents come to light over the coming years, we may finally be able to solve the biggest murder mystery of the last 200 years.
2. His "type"
Jack the Ripper didn’t just kill at random. Like modern serial killers, he had a “type.” Four of the five canonical victims were approximately the same age—late 30s to 40s. His highly specific method of killing is stated in the last entry. He struck on weekends or bank holidays. And obviously the reason he’s so well remembered—besides never being caught—is the graphic nature of the wounds, they all had some pelvic mutilation.

It is generally accepted by Ripperologists that there were five murders, known as the canonical five. However, by the time murder #1 occurred, the press already referred to this as “another” murder. According to Donald McCormick, author of The Identity of Jack the Ripper published in 1959, Abberline raised the theory in a conversation with his mentor, Dr. Thomas Dutton after the murder of Mary Kelly. Testimony given by Caroline Maxwell, who lived in the area, was central to the argument.
The harsh reality of that era was that countless “ladies of the night” were subjected to violent attacks, which in some cases resulted in their deaths. According to criminal psychology we learn that serial killers tend to have a very good grasp of other people’s emotions and are quick to pick up on any vulnerability or weakness in order to convince them into doing things they normally wouldn’t. In this episode we take a look at the infamous Jack the Ripper and his 5 canonical victims.
From 1888 to 1891 its believed the killer had committed eleven separate murders, however its speculated that the deaths may have been at the hands of different killers but there have been five definitive murders linked to Jack the Ripper.
Known as the canonical five, the victims were: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. All of the women were brutally mutilated apart from Elizabeth Stride.
Throughout a lengthy investigation the police had come up with hundreds of suspects but could never tie the crimes to any of them. The murders remain unsolved today and Jack the Rippers identity remains anonymous.

In this episode we take a look at the infamous Jack the Ripper and his 5 canonical victims.
From 1888 to 1891 its believed the killer had committed eleven separate murders, however its speculated that the deaths may have been at the hands of different killers but there have been five definitive murders linked to Jack the Ripper.
Known as the canonical five, the victims were: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. All of the women were brutally mutilated apart from Elizabeth Stride.
Throughout a lengthy investigation the police had come up with hundreds of suspects but could never tie the crimes to any of them. The murders remain unsolved today and Jack the Rippers identity remains anonymous.

Eventually a fragment from one of Humble's envelopes was traced to him through DNA, and in 2006 he was sentenced to eight years for perverting the course of justice.
