Powell is solid, but the cinematography makes him all the better. Dmytryk and veteran cinematographer Harry J. Wild create a brooding environment where shadow threatens to overwhelm the characters. In the commentary, Silver reminds us that Wild and other crew members were RKO regulars who created the stunning visuals for Citizen Kane. Here we see the same deep focus, the same dramatic shading and composition. Dmytryk even throws in a drug trip which is oddly convincing. In terms of pure cinematography, Murder, My Sweet is unmistakably noir, superbly handled noir at that.

Edward Dmytryk (September 4, 1908 – July 1, 1999) was an American film director who was amongst the Hollywood Ten, a group of blacklisted film industry professionals who served time in prison for being in contempt of Congress during the McCarthy-era 'red scare'.
Dmytryk was born in Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada, the son of Ukrainian parents. He grew up in San Francisco when his family moved to the United States. After his mother died, his father, Michael Dmytryk, remarried. At the age of 31, Dmytryk became a naturalized citizen.
Dmytryk made his directorial debut with The Hawk in 1935. His best known films from the pre-McCarthy period of his career were film noirs Crossfire, for which he received a Best Director Oscar nomination, and Murder, My Sweet, the latter an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's Farewell My Lovely. In addition, he made two World War II films: Hitler's Children, the story of the Hitler youth and Back to Bataan starring John Wayne.

As in the earlier film Wichita, 1955, the conflict of the law with the outlaw runs parallel with the resentment of the town's own leadership. Early life Born in Chicago, he was the son of Ellis (Abbott) and journalist and humorist, Ring Lardner. After being educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, and Princeton University he became a reporter on the New York Daily Mirror. Lardner joined the US Communist Party in 1936. Career Ring Lardner Jr. moved to Hollywood where he worked as a publicist and "script doctor" before writing his own material. This included Woman of the Year, a film that won him an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay in 1942. He also worked on the scripts for the films Laura (1944), Brotherhood of Man (1946), Forever Amber (1947), and M*A*S*H (1970). The script of the latter earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, but Lardner would later distance himself from the film due to the fact that director Robert Altman changed the script so much. Lardner held strong left-wing views and during the Spanish Civil War he helped raise funds for the Republican cause. He was also involved in organizing anti-fascist demonstrations. His brother, James Lardner, was a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and was killed in action in Spain in 1938. Although his political involvement upset the owners of the film studios, he continued to be given work and in 1947 became one of the highest paid scriptwriters in Hollywood when he signed a contract with 20th Century Fox at $2,000 a week. Blacklisting After the Second World War the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) began an investigation into the Hollywood motion picture industry. In September, 1947, the HUAC interviewed 41 people who were working in Hollywood. These people attended voluntarily and became known as "friendly witnesses". During their interviews they named several people whom they accused of holding left-wing views. Lardner appeared before the HUAC on October 30, 1947, but like Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Albert Maltz, Adrian Scott, Dalton Trumbo, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Samuel Ornitz and John Howard Lawson, he refused to answer any questions. Known as the "Hollywood Ten", they claimed that the First Amendment to the United States Constitution clearly gave them the right to do this. The HUAC and the courts during appeals disagreed and all were found guilty of contempt of Congress. Lardner was sentenced to 12 months in Danbury Prison and fined $1,000. He had been dismissed by Fox on October 28, 1947. Blacklisted by the Hollywood studios, Lardner worked for the next couple of years on the novel, The Ecstasy of Owen Muir (1954). He moved to England for a time where he wrote under several pseudonyms for television series such as The Adventures of Robin Hood. The blacklist was lifted when producer Martin Ransohoff and director Norman Jewison gave him screen credit for writing 1965's The Cincinnati Kid. Lardner's later work included M*A*S*H (1970), for which he won the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay, and The Greatest (1977). His final film project was an adaptation of Roger Kahn's classic book, "The Boys of Summer." To Ring's great regret, funding did not materialize. According to Hungarian writer Miklos Vamos—who visited Lardner several times before his death—Lardner won an Academy Award for a movie he wrote under a pseudonym. Lardner refused to tell which movie it was, saying that it would be unfair to reveal it because the writer who allowed Lardner, Jr., to use his name as a front (as Lardner's pseudonym) was doing him a big favor at the time. Ring Lardner, Jr., died in Manhattan, New York, in 2000. He was the last surviving member of the Hollywood Ten. -

It was filmed in Budapest, Hungary and directed by Edward Dmytryk. The Producers were the Salkinds, laterto make the original big budget Superman and Muskateers flicks. even the score is by the prolific Ennio Morricone. good pedigree indeed. The film is based on the classic story of Bluebeard by Charles Perrault of a wealthy aristocrat (Burton) who has murdered several previous wives. His latest spouse (Heatherton) discovers his late predecessors frozen in a freezer and tries to avoid their fate. Originally made as a film with John Carradine in the title role in 1944, Bluebeard was altered by setting the story in a totalitarian state, where Burton's character is honored as a kind of hero by others. In truth, he masks his true self and his intentions until the right moment, when his victims don't know his motives. The emphasis is on the title character's predatory nature and actions. The film opened in 1972 to mostly negative reviews as critics felt the film did not have a strong air of suspense as another maniac-on-the-loose film did, Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy. It would also be considered one of Burton's weakest efforts, with no real effort on his part to play the role. Baron von Sepper is an Austrian aristocrat noted for his blue-toned beard, and his appetite for beautiful wives. His latest spouse, an American beauty named Anne, discovers a vault in his castle that's filled with the frozen bodies of several beautiful women. When confronted with this slight oddity, Bluebeard explains to Anne that he found an easier alternative to divorce when he grew bored with his previous wives. In order to avoid being Bluebeard's next frozen bride, Anne must find a way to outwit her murderous hubby. utterly mental and up there with Night of the Generals in terms ofweirdness it is still worth a watch enjoy -

Ringgold Wilmer "Ring" Lardner, Jr. (August 19, 1915 -- October 31, 2000) was an American journalist and screenwriter blacklisted by the Hollywood movie studios during the Red Scare of the late 1940s and 1950s.
Early life
Born in Chicago, he was the son of Ellis (Abbott) and journalist and humorist, Ring Lardner. After being educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, and Princeton University he became a reporter on the New York Daily Mirror. Lardner joined the US Communist Party in 1936.
Career
Ring Lardner Jr. moved to Hollywood where he worked as a publicist and "script doctor" before writing his own material. This included Woman of the Year, a film that won him an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay in 1942. He also worked on the scripts for the films Laura (1944), Brotherhood of Man (1946), Forever Amber (1947), and M*A*S*H (1970). The script of the latter earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, but Lardner would later distance himself from the film due to the fact that director Robert Altman changed the script so much.
Lardner held strong left-wing views and during the Spanish Civil War he helped raise funds for the Republican cause. He was also involved in organizing anti-fascist demonstrations. His brother, James Lardner, was a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and was killed in action in Spain in 1938. Although his political involvement upset the owners of the film studios, he continued to be given work and in 1947 became one of the highest paid scriptwriters in Hollywood when he signed a contract with 20th Century Fox at $2,000 a week.
Blacklisting
After the Second World War the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) began an investigation into the Hollywood motion picture industry. In September, 1947, the HUAC interviewed 41 people who were working in Hollywood. These people attended voluntarily and became known as "friendly witnesses". During their interviews they named several people whom they accused of holding left-wing views.
Lardner appeared before the HUAC on October 30, 1947, but like Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Albert Maltz, Adrian Scott, Dalton Trumbo, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Samuel Ornitz and John Howard Lawson, he refused to answer any questions. Known as the "Hollywood Ten", they claimed that the First Amendment to the United States Constitution clearly gave them the right to do this. The HUAC and the courts during appeals disagreed and all were found guilty of contempt of Congress. Lardner was sentenced to 12 months in Danbury Prison and fined $1,000. He had been dismissed by Fox on October 28, 1947.
Blacklisted by the Hollywood studios, Lardner worked for the next couple of years on the novel, The Ecstasy of Owen Muir (1954). He moved to England for a time where he wrote under several pseudonyms for television series such as The Adventures of Robin Hood. The blacklist was lifted when producer Martin Ransohoff and director Norman Jewison gave him screen credit for writing 1965's The Cincinnati Kid. Lardner's later work included M*A*S*H (1970), for which he won the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay, and The Greatest (1977). His final film project was an adaptation of Roger Kahn's classic book, "The Boys of Summer." To Ring's great regret, funding did not materialize.
According to Hungarian writer Miklos Vamos—who visited Lardner several times before his death—Lardner won an Academy Award for a movie he wrote under a pseudonym. Lardner refused to tell which movie it was, saying that it would be unfair to reveal it because the writer who allowed Lardner, Jr., to use his name as a front (as Lardner's pseudonym) was doing him a big favor at the time.
Ring Lardner, Jr., died in Manhattan, New York, in 2000. He was the last surviving member of the Hollywood Ten.

A fairly obscure 1972 thriller starring Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, Joey Heatherton and Sybil Danning. It was filmed in Budapest, Hungary and directed by Edward Dmytryk. The Producers were the Salkinds, laterto make the original big budget Superman and Muskateers flicks. even the score is by the prolific Ennio Morricone. good pedigree indeed.
The film is based on the classic story of Bluebeard by Charles Perrault of a wealthy aristocrat (Burton) who has murdered several previous wives. His latest spouse (Heatherton) discovers his late predecessors frozen in a freezer and tries to avoid their fate.
Originally made as a film with John Carradine in the title role in 1944, Bluebeard was altered by setting the story in a totalitarian state, where Burton's character is honored as a kind of hero by others. In truth, he masks his true self and his intentions until the right moment, when his victims don't know his motives. The emphasis is on the title character's predatory nature and actions.
The film opened in 1972 to mostly negative reviews as critics felt the film did not have a strong air of suspense as another maniac-on-the-loose film did, Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy. It would also be considered one of Burton's weakest efforts, with no real effort on his part to play the role.
Baron von Sepper is an Austrian aristocrat noted for his blue-toned beard, and his appetite for beautiful wives. His latest spouse, an American beauty named Anne, discovers a vault in his castle that's filled with the frozen bodies of several beautiful women. When confronted with this slight oddity, Bluebeard explains to Anne that he found an easier alternative to divorce when he grew bored with his previous wives. In order to avoid being Bluebeard's next frozen bride, Anne must find a way to outwit her murderous hubby.
utterly mental and up there with Night of the Generals in terms ofweirdness it is still worth a watch

A short look at clean entrances and exits, and exploring some of the ideas of Edward Dmytryk. Clean entrances and exits are frequently used and if they go unnoticed, then there is nothing wrong with them. However, as Dmytryk argues they violate some other rules of editing, which include not lingering on a scene any longer than you need to and the importance of cutting on action. It is true that clean entrances and exits do create a sense of lingering. So Dmytryk makes a strong case that while clean entrances are okay, clean exits should be avoided. He advocates cutting from an exit as soon as the actor's eyes leave the frame, and cutting to an actor's entrance just a couple of frames after the eyes reappear. While this takes care of the lingering effect, sometimes the effect can appear jumpy, so cutting at precisely the right time is the key. Not lingering and keeping the audience's eye on the action. That is the artistry of editing! -
