The New School (http://www.newschool.edu) presents Israeli and Palestinian Cinema: Shaping Memory and Imagining the Future
Scholar Ella Habiba Shohat and curator Rasha Salti discuss the new edition of Shohat's seminal book Israeli Cinema: East/West and the Politics of Representation (Library of Modern Middle Eastern Studies, 2010). This conversation is punctuated by brief excerpts from Palestinian films produced in Israel, and diasporic films that address the contested geography of Israel/Palestine. When it first appeared in 1989, this book shaped a new paradigm for critical discussion in Israel of "national cinema" and the Zionist master narrative. Israeli Cinema: East/West and the Politics of Representation explores cinema as a productive site of national culture. Taking its cue from the coincidental emergence of Zionism and the cinema around the same time, the book deconstructs the movement by considering the role that cinema has played in the "invention" of the Jewish nation. The book provoked a stormy public debate when it was translated into Hebrew. Rethinking the Eurocentric imaginary of East versus West, Shohat highlights the paradoxes of an anomalous national/colonial project, addressing issues such as the ambivalence toward the geographies of East and West; the Sabra as negation of the Diaspora Jew; the iconography of the land of Israel as a denial of Palestine; the narrative role of the good Arab and the limits of positive image analysis; and the oxymoronic place allotted to Arab-Jews/Mizrahim within an orientalist historical and social discourse.
The new edition includes an extensive postscript about the book's original reception. It looks at the inscription of the Arab-Jewish memory of Muslim spaces, and reflects on the Palestinian narration of the Nakba within a revisionist cinema that actively constructs an audio-visual archive.

This master class is presented by Palestine Cuts, a new art initiative by the Center for Palestine Studies. Mohanad Yaqubi will deliver a Master Class on Palestinian Militant Cinema. Drawing on recently found film rushes, rare documentary footage and clips of Third Cinema, Yaqubi will introduce us to a fascinating and often neglected world that engages with the depth of Palestine's film-making history, its role in shaping Palestinian identity, and its ties to the wider Third Cinema movement. The presentation will raise questions with regards to the role of 'militant cinema' as a tool of documentation but also to intervene in the political upheavals and liberation movements that shook the world in the midst of the past century. Counterpoising the militant period of Palestine cinema with post-Oslo cinema will open up a conversation about the political role and nature of Palestinian cinematic language today, its potential and possibility.
Palestine Cuts is a new space for emerging and established filmmakers and video-artists to present and discuss their work in an engaging and encouraging environment. It promotes stimulating audiovisual projects (documentary and fiction film, video, installations, etc.) that challenge existing conventions and offer critical and alternative views about Palestine and Palestinians. Palestine Cuts also is interested in the broader regional and global socio-political, economic and cultural context of which Palestine is an intrinsic part. In this sense, we hope to bring Palestine-related work into conversation with other Arab and international filmmakers and audiovisual artists. Through screenings, discussions, master classes as well as open and closed workshops for work in progress and finished projects, Palestine Cuts hopes to attract a wide array of artists, producers, curators, critics, scholars, activists and others interested in committed audiovisual work that opens up new spaces for imagination.

In this edition of the show Russell reviews the film; Fragments of Palestine, directed by Marie Caspari.
Three young people protest against Israeli presence in Palestinian territory, each in their own peaceful way.
The Israeli Maja refused to do her military service and became a tour guide. She tries to counterbalance the inaccuracies propagated by the Israeli PR machine by leading busloads of tourists through areas of Jerusalem that are key in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Rabea is a Palestinian whose sister was killed by Israeli soldiers, and he offers resistance with art, opting to capture the conflict in a theatre production.
Unfortunately, he can't always count on support from those around him. Jody is British, and he has travelled to Bil'in, a village in the West Bank, to support Palestinians in their peaceful protest.
Every Friday, he goes to the wall in his wheelchair to demonstrate. This is not always without a level of risk, as the protests are often quashed. Filmed in their own surroundings, these youngsters talk about how they struggle with the conflict.

Palestinian cinema, a world of fragments
A film is a world of fragments, says Godard. And Palestine is a world of fragments as well. We should keep looking at those worlds with the hope that our eyes and dreams go further and beyond.
Over the last two years nearly 100 films have been screened at Madrid Palestine Film Festival, and more than twenty Palestinian films will be screened this year. Filmoteca Española will host this event in November and December 2012. This festival once again creates a space for coming together and finding the wealth that this cinema offers us, a cinema that always has more life, through a people who are demonstrating their culture, their artistic innovation and diversity out of their oppression.
We invite you to be a part of this project; a project full of reality, soul and future. We would like you to be proud of taking part in something alive, real, and which allows us to experience the creative resistance of a people through the eyes of their own filmmakers, through their creations and testimonials. In order that we might not be deprived, cinema makes Palestine visible. This year the festival will focus on fiction films by Elia Suleiman, Michel Khleifi, Hany Abu Assad, Tawfik Abu Wael, Ali Nassar, Rashid Masharawi, Annamarie Jacir, Cherien Dabis, Najwa Najjar and many others.

Una película es un mundo de fragmentos, dice Godard, y Palestina es también un mundo de fragmentos. No dejemos de mirar esos mundos con el anhelo de que nuestros ojos y sueños vayan más allá.
En los últimos dos años hemos proyectado casi 100 películas a través de la Muestra de Cine Palestino de Madrid. Este año, en su tercera edición, se proyectará UNA VEINTENA más de películas palestinas. Filmoteca Española acogerá este festival durante los meses de noviembre y diciembre de 2012. Un festival que apuesta una vez más por un espacio de encuentro y conocimiento de la riqueza que nos ofrece un cine con cada vez más vida, a través de un pueblo que desde su opresión comparte su cultura, su innovación artística y su diversidad.
Te proponemos formar parte de este proyecto lleno de realidad, alma y futuro. Cinema of Palestine
Palestinian cinema is relatively young in comparison to Arab cinema as a whole, many Palestinian movies are made with European and Israeli funding and support. Palestinian movies are not exclusively produced in Arabic and some are made in English, French and Hebrew.
History
The first period: The beginning, 1935–48
The first Palestinian film to be made is generally believed to be a documentary on King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia´s visit in 1935 to Palestine, made by Ibrahim Hassan Sirhan, based in Jaffa(also spelled Ibrahim Hasan Serhan.) Sirhan followed the King and around Palestine, "from Lod to Jaffa and from Jaffa to Tel Aviv". The result was a silent movie that was presented at the Nabi Rubin festivals. Following this documentary, Sirhan joined Jamal al-Asphar to produce a 45-minute film called The Realized Dreams, aiming to "promote the orphans´cause". Sirhan and al-Asphar also produced a documentary about Ahmad Hilmi Pasha, a member of the Higher Arab Commission. In 1945 Sirhan established the "Arab Film Company" production studio together with Ahmad Hilmi al-Kilani. The company launched the feature film Holiday Eve, which was followed by preparations for the next film A Storm at Home. The films themselves were lost in 1948, when Sirhan had to flee Jaffa after the town was bombarded.

Scholar Ella Habiba Shohat and curator Rasha Salti discuss the new edition of Shohat's seminal book Israeli Cinema: East/West and the Politics of Representation (Library of Modern Middle Eastern Studies, 2010). This conversation is punctuated by brief excerpts from Palestinian films produced in Israel, and diasporic films that address the contested geography of Israel/Palestine. When it first appeared in 1989, this book shaped a new paradigm for critical discussion in Israel of "national cinema" and the Zionist master narrative. Israeli Cinema: East/West and the Politics of Representation explores cinema as a productive site of national culture. Taking its cue from the coincidental emergence of Zionism and the cinema around the same time, the book deconstructs the movement by considering the role that cinema has played in the "invention" of the Jewish nation. The book provoked a stormy public debate when it was translated into Hebrew. Rethinking the Eurocentric imaginary of East versus West, Shohat highlights the paradoxes of an anomalous national/colonial project, addressing issues such as the ambivalence toward the geographies of East and West; the Sabra as negation of the Diaspora Jew; the iconography of the land of Israel as a denial of Palestine; the narrative role of the good Arab and the limits of positive image analysis; and the oxymoronic place allotted to Arab-Jews/Mizrahim within an orientalist historical and social discourse.
The new edition includes an extensive postscript about the book's original reception. It looks at the inscription of the Arab-Jewish memory of Muslim spaces, and reflects on the Palestinian narration of the Nakba within a revisionist cinema that actively constructs an audio-visual archive.

This master class is presented by Palestine Cuts, a new art initiative by the Center for Palestine Studies. Mohanad Yaqubi will deliver a Master Class on Palestinian Militant Cinema. Drawing on recently found film rushes, rare documentary footage and clips of Third Cinema, Yaqubi will introduce us to a fascinating and often neglected world that engages with the depth of Palestine's film-making history, its role in shaping Palestinian identity, and its ties to the wider Third Cinema movement. The presentation will raise questions with regards to the role of 'militant cinema' as a tool of documentation but also to intervene in the political upheavals and liberation movements that shook the world in the midst of the past century. Counterpoising the militant period of Palestine cinema with post-Oslo cinema will open up a conversation about the political role and nature of Palestinian cinematic language today, its potential and possibility.
Palestine Cuts is a new space for emerging and established filmmakers and video-artists to present and discuss their work in an engaging and encouraging environment. It promotes stimulating audiovisual projects (documentary and fiction film, video, installations, etc.) that challenge existing conventions and offer critical and alternative views about Palestine and Palestinians. Palestine Cuts also is interested in the broader regional and global socio-political, economic and cultural context of which Palestine is an intrinsic part. In this sense, we hope to bring Palestine-related work into conversation with other Arab and international filmmakers and audiovisual artists. Through screenings, discussions, master classes as well as open and closed workshops for work in progress and finished projects, Palestine Cuts hopes to attract a wide array of artists, producers, curators, critics, scholars, activists and others interested in committed audiovisual work that opens up new spaces for imagination.

Mustafa Abu Ali "They Do Not Exist" - (1974). (Full Segment). "In the late 1960s, a group of young Arab women and men devoted to the struggle for Palestinian freedom chose to contribute to the resistance through filmmaking, recording their lives, hopes, and their fight for justice. Working in both fiction and documentary, they strived to tell the stories of Palestine and to create a new kind of cinema. These filmmakers included founders Mustafa Abu Ali, Sulafa Jadallah, and Hani Jawhariya. Others were Khadija Abu Ali, Ismael Shammout, Rafiq Hijjar, Nabiha Lutfi, Fuad Zentut, Jean Chamoun and Samir Nimr. Most were refugees, exiled from their homes in Palestine. We finally got a rare glimpse of the embattled Gaza Strip and a chance to see what life was like under the rule of Hamas. In 2007 we tried and failed to get into Gaza through the Israeli-controlled Erez Crossing. Back then the rival Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah were engaged in a bloody war for control of this tiny strip of land. Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of Egypt decided to start letting small numbers of folks into Gaza through their Rafah Crossing, we knew we could finally enter the region. Titled after the film of the same name by Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville, Here and Elsewhere is a daylong film event presenting contemporary and historical as well as documentary and fictional films relevant to the topic of the contested land of Palestine/Israel.
Curated by 2011--2013 Vera List Center Fellow Joshua Simon, the program proposes to view the conflict through the prism of "affinities" rather than "belonging" and "addition" rather than "opposition," and does so through film screenings and conversations. The day of screenings is presented as one of two programs to accompany the publication of United States of Palestine-Israel (in the Solution series by Sternberg Press, 2011), a book of speculative scenarios for the region, edited by Simon.
Reaching beyond geographical borders and instead focusing on the word "and," the films present fictional stories about the territory, including depictions of run-down places in Jaffa; speculation on the future Jewish-Arab State; Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's visions of what Israel might have looked like had it become a Ugandan settlement (as was considered at some point); the landscapes of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea so familiar to both Palestinians and Israelis; and, finally, Godard's reading of the history of this place through cinema, and a reading of cinema and history through this place.

"Salvaged from the ruins of Beirut after 1982, Abu Ali's early film has only recently been made available. Shooting under extraordinary conditions, the director, who worked with Godard on his Ici et Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere), and founded the PLO's film division, covers conditions in Lebanon's refugee camps, the effects of Israeli bombardments, and the lives of guerrillas in training camps. They Do Not Exist is a stylistically unique work which demonstrates the intersection between the political and the aesthetic.
Now recognised as a cornerstone in the development of Palestinian cinema, the film only received its Palestine premiere in 2003, when a group of Palestinian artists "smuggled" the director to a makeshift cinema in his hometown of Jerusalem (into which Israel bars his entry). Abu Ali, who saw his film for the first time in 20 years at this clandestine event noted: "We used to say 'Art for the Struggle', now it's 'Struggle for the Art'"
