Many people have asked about tape loops and how to do it themselves, so here is my long overdue video on how to make a cassette tape loop. In this video, I show you the basics of tape looping and the method I personally use to making my loops (there are many variations out there). You can use any tape (with screws) you want. Be patient, experiment, and don't get too frustrated - there is a lot of trial and error involved.

So I don't have a lot modules (yet), but I do have a bunch of tape players and tape loops, so I decided to combine them! The walkman on the lower right hand corner is playing a tape loop of a few ambient chords being run through the Mutable Instruments Clouds (and it's built in reverb). Clouds is then being fed into the Make Noise Rosie, with the Zoom MS-50G pedal in the effects loop of the Rosie module. In the middle of the song I also feed a tape loop into the Clouds freeze and trigger inputs and use the tape loop audio as a modulation source for Clouds. Tape loop experiments with my Tascam 4 track recorder (part of my larger setup - The Suitcase of Drone). Each one of the 4 tracks on the cassette has a different note in E which forms a E major chord (with added 9th). I adjust each track to create a droning, evolving, ambient soundscape.
The 4 track is also run through a Mooer Spark Echo/Reverb pedal.

For this video, I wanted to experiment and take this idea further by using a large ensemble of walkmans and various length tape loops. This improvised ambient walkman "symphony" is recorded in real time, with all tape loops being mixed and processed through a caline reverb pedal and behringer delay.

This truly unique tape player was originally designed to assist the blind and has several amazing features including variable speed tape playback, half speed switching, and the ability to play both sides of a tape without flipping the tape. four tape recorder techniques for minimal techno:
1) a tape loop system (1 recorder, top right)
2) long delay (2 recorders: top left and middle right)
3) reverse delay (bottom middle)
4) tape feedback/tape saturation on system 1, 2 and 3
The teac 8 track is not doing anything here.. except being a rather expensive table for two other recorders,
btw. the video in the second part doesn't really match the music, the camera fell so I couldn't use the original.. I wasn't doing all that much except for letting the long tape delay saturate on itself for a very very long time...

Tape loop
In music, tape loops are loops of magnetic tape used to create repetitive, rhythmic musical patterns or dense layers of sound when played on a tape recorder. Originating in the 1940s with the work of Pierre Schaeffer, they were used among contemporary composers of 1950s and 1960s, such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, who used them to create phase patterns, rhythms, textures, and timbres. Popular music authors of 1960s and 1970s, particularly in psychedelic, progressive and ambient genres, used tape loops to accompany their music with innovative sound effects. In the 1980s, analog audio and tape loops with it gave way to digital audio and application of computers to generate and process sound.
Description
In a tape loop, sound is recorded on a section of magnetic tape and this tape is cut and spliced end-to-end, creating a circle or loop which can be played continuously, usually on a reel-to-reel machine.
By accelerating the speed of a loop to a sufficient degree (e.g., 1,280 times faster), a sequence of events originally perceived as a rhythm becomes heard as a pitch, and variation of the rhythm in the original succession of events produces different timbres in the accelerated sound (Stockhausen "Concept", 42; Stockhausen "Vier Kriterien", 362–63).

So I don't have a lot modules (yet), but I do have a bunch of tape players and tape loops, so I decided to combine them! The walkman on the lower right hand corner is playing a tape loop of a few ambient chords being run through the Mutable Instruments Clouds (and it's built in reverb). Clouds is then being fed into the Make Noise Rosie, with the Zoom MS-50G pedal in the effects loop of the Rosie module. In the middle of the song I also feed a tape loop into the Clouds freeze and trigger inputs and use the tape loop audio as a modulation source for Clouds. Tape loop experiments with my Tascam 4 track recorder (part of my larger setup - The Suitcase of Drone). Each one of the 4 tracks on the cassette has a different note in E which forms a E major chord (with added 9th). I adjust each track to create a droning, evolving, ambient soundscape.
The 4 track is also run through a Mooer Spark Echo/Reverb pedal.

btw. the video in the second part doesn't really match the music, the camera fell so I couldn't use the original.. I wasn't doing all that much except for letting the long tape delay saturate on itself for a very very long time...

the reason I made this music video was to actually help myself. on the day i made this, my hair was greasy, my skin was bad, i had nothing to wear, and i didn't want to leave bed. i had just woken up in this video and you can definitely tell (lol) i felt really ugly but realized that it's perfectly okay to feel that way/have those types of days.
the song is about a relationship i had where i felt I needed to be the perfect girl for another person.. whether that's wearing makeup, doing my hair, wearing things they like, or even changing the way i speak/WHEN i speak.
so,
i felt that the only way i could make this video was to have a lot of fun looking disgusting and not caring at all ! it's okay to have flaws and it's okay to embrace them and it's okay to be silly and stupid. you all might already know this, but i'm happy that i know this now
