Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan enthralled the students of Yale University as he came to the Ivy League institution as a Chubb Fellow, one of its top honours.
A crowd gathered outside the Shubert Theatre early in the afternoon and as the day went on the line snaked around the corner.
Fans travelled from as far as Alabama and California to join with members of the New Haven and Yale community to hear Khan speak to a capacity audience of about 1,700.
Khan charmed the crowd as he spoke to them about success and failure and how to live life to the fullest. He encouraged young people to find fulfilment in creativity, to learn to laugh at themselves and to never become cynical about their lives.
"Failure is a fiendish friend that can lead to success by teaching one to be pragmatic, to work harder, and to be true to oneself," he said, adding that the true strength of one's friendships is tested in the face of strong adversity.
Khan emphasised the importance of young people appreciating and cherishing their parents' love.
"Whatever you do, whichever mistakes you make, your parents are your best friends," he said.
The lecture took a light-hearted turn when Khan danced his signature 'Chammak Challo' moves with Yale student Natalia Khosla.
"This is the most fun I have had in months!" Khan said.
Khan was introduced by Yale student Isha Ambani, who is president of the South Asian Society at Yale and participated in a conversation onstage with Jeffrey Brenzel, Yale dean of undergraduate admissions and master of Timothy Dwight College, the Yale residential college that administers the Chubb Fellowship; Yale College alumna Sarika Arya; and Yale Law School student Nihkil Sud.
As part of the Yale Chubb Fellowship, Khan attended a reception and dinner at Timothy Dwight College with over 120 Yale students including members of the South Asian Society at Yale, fellows of Timothy Dwight, and other members of the Yale community.
Each year three or four distinguished men and women have been appointed as visiting Chubb Fellows. Former Chubb Fellows include presidents George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Jimmy Carter; authors Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, and Toni Morrison; filmmaker Sofia Coppola; architect Frank Gehry; choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov; and journalist Walter Cronkite.

On November 5, 2015, students at Yale University gathered on campus to protest an email sent by Associate Master of Silliman College Erika Christakis on October 30. Christakis’ email responded to a separate email from the school’s Intercultural Affairs Council that asked students to be thoughtful about the cultural implications of their Halloween costumes.
Christakis argued that the council’s email was infantilizing and threatened free expression on campus. There was also a concern that because the email was long, detailed, had 13 signatories, and links to acceptable and unacceptable costumes, it would not be interpreted as a suggestion. But rather it had the “color of law” implicit within it.
FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff was on Yale’s campus during the protests on November 5 and captured this footage on his cell phone of Christakis’ husband, Nicholas, meeting with the protestors. By the time Lukianoff arrived on the scene, Nicholas had been speaking with the protesters for about an hour.
The Washington Post reports that students have begun to organize formal demands for the resignation of Christakis and her husband.

Email from Erika Christakis: https://www.thefire.org/email-from-erika-christakis-dressing-yourselves-email-to-silliman-college-yale-students-on-halloween-costumes/

Yale University has been hit by controversy in the past week after professor Erika Christakis, associate headmaster of the school’s Silliman College, sent an email to the college’s members suggesting that they shouldn’t be overly sensitive about Halloween costumes that engage in “cultural appropriation.” Instead, Christakis encouraged students to tolerate them and avoid trying to censor expression.
“Is there no room anymore for a child or young person to be a little bit obnoxious … a little bit inappropriate or provocative or, yes, offensive?” Christakis wrote. “American universities were once a safe space not only for maturation but also for a certain regressive, or even transgressive, experience; increasingly, it seems, they have become places of censure and prohibition.”
In response, Christakis and her husband Nicholas (Silliman’s headmaster) have been besieged by calls for their resignation by students who say they have made Yale a dangerous place for black students. The controversy has become even more intense because of simultaneous allegations that the school’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter held a “white girls only” Halloween party. http://www.infowars.com/yale-student-shrieks-at-prof-for-denying-her-safe-space-video/

"At the airport, at the hotel, there is always an apple," says Shankman, who now brings almonds to pair with the fruit and passes up airline food altogether. Whole foods like fruit and nuts are full of fiber. That keeps you feeling full longer, so you'll eat l

We were lucky enough to catch a tour around the campus :) After a stressful drive (city driving argh!) we returned the hire car and headed to our hotel (room tour!!), which was huge (more like an apartment!) with amazing views. Had just enough energy to catch an eat to bite at a nearby restaurant before hitting snoozeville.

Travel Tips From Master Traveler: Richard Fowler

1. Eat Whole Foods You probably wouldn't grab a bag of chips and soda and call it breakfast if you're at home - so don't do it on the road. "At the airport, at the hotel, there is always an apple," says Shankman, who now brings almonds to pair with the fruit and passes up airline food altogether. Whole foods like fruit and nuts are full of fiber. That keeps you feeling full longer, so you'll eat less.
2. Stay Hydrated Instead of dehydrating alcohol and caffeine, try to stick to water when flying, says Yale University nutritionist Lisa T. Kimmel, MS, RD, CSSD. "Low humidity and recirculating air within the cabin are a set-up for dehydration, which can worsen jet lag and cause fatigue. A good rule of thumb is to drink 8 ounces of water every hour of the flight," says Kimmel.
3. Multitask Your Workout Workout and sightsee at the same time. "Running or walking is a great way to see a new place and get outdoors," says Sarah Lorge Butler, a fellow MoneyWatch contributor and author of Run Your Butt Off! Don't want to make room in your carry-on? Westin hotels now lend guests running shoes.
4. Don't Count on the Gym If it's raining and your hotel doesn't have a gym, that's no excuse to fall off the workout wagon, says Hollywood trainer Gunnar Peterson. He advises his jet-setting clients to pack a jump rope that can be used both in the traditional way and as a stretching aid. Another hotel-room friendly exercise? Push-ups. Peterson suggests doing 10-15 reps with your feet on your bed and your hands on the floor, and another set with your hands on your bed and your feet on the floor. For a guided workout, download one to your laptop before you leave and you'll be set, whatever the weather.
5. Stick To Your Regular Eating Schedule Planning ahead will keep you from ditching your diet later. "Don't skip breakfast. Schedule a wake up call to make sure that you take time to eat so that you don't overcompensate with big portions as the day goes on," says Kimmel.
6. Stay Active at the Airport If you get to the airport early, resist the urge to immediately plop down into a chair at the gate (they're not comfortable anyway, so this shouldn't be too hard). Window shop until you board, and you'll burn both calories and time. "I never take the moving walkways at an airport," says Butler. "Geez Louise, people - just drag your wheelie behind you and move your tush a little before you settle into that airplane seat!"
7. Remember That Calories Count, Even Midair Sure, you can ask for a low-fat, low-sodium meal if your airline offers them. But bringing your own food is better. "A few of my picks: homemade trail mix with whole grain cereal, dried fruit, peanut butter and jelly or honey on whole grain bread, whole wheat crackers with nut butter, or raw veggies," suggests Kimmel.
8. Make Cocktail Hour About Networking, Not Drinking Whether you're partaking in a conference's happy hour or sipping martinis with a business associate at a hotel bar, alcohol calories can add up quickly. Even worse, drinking too much will cloud your judgment when you order dinner (as well as when you're making business decisions). "Get one drink at the very beginning with lots of ice and nurse it all night," says Shankman. "Or get club soda with lime. Everybody thinks it is vodka."

Connecticut is a small New England state, full of charm, rural beauty and several major cities. The State's top tourist attractions include Yale University, which maintains numerous world-class museums, Mystic Seaport, the restaurant and nightlife scene in downtown New Haven, The Maritime Aquarium, and two major Native American casinos.
Regions
Fairfield County
Southwest Connecticut, near New York City. This area has many beaches and lighthouses, and many of the state's biggest cities, such as Bridgeport, Stamford, and Norwalk.
Litchfield Hills
Northwest Connecticut. Here you will find the less dense areas with colorful leaves in the autumn. There are some smaller cities such as Torrington, Danbury, and New Milford.
Greater New Haven
South central Connecticut. Home to Yale University, and numerous museums and theaters. It includes cities such as New Haven and Milford.
Connecticut River Valley
From North central Connecticut to the coast. Home to New England's 2nd most populous region, the Knowledge Corridor, featuring Connecticut's state capital Hartford and many historic sights
Mystic-Eastern
New London, Tolland and Windham Counties in eastern Connecticut. A good place to get a view of the Long Island Sound, with beaches, and the famous Mystic Seaport/Aquarium. Has two of the biggest casinos in the world. Includes cities such as New London, Mystic, Uncasville, and Ledyard.
Cities
Hartford - The state capital.
Bridgeport - The most populated city in the state.
Danbury - Also known as Hat City, Danbury is home to Western Connecticut State University, Candlewood Lake, and many good restaurants.
Greenwich - Ranked the 12th greatest place to live, Greenwich is a quaint town with a great view of Long Island.
Mystic - This is one of the most common places to visit, due to the historic seaport and aquarium.
New Haven - the state's "creative capital" and home to the greatest amount of pedestrian life, top-rated restaurants and tourist attractions
New London - Home to the coast guard acadamy, New London has a historic view of Long Island Sound.
Norwalk - home to trendy SoNo with an active night life and The Maritime Aquarium
Waterbury - This is a small urban community with lots to do. Look for the Union Station Clocktower that overlooks the city.
Other destinations
Connecticut is rich with history, nature, art and beauty. Truly something for everyone. While many people are drawn each year to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casinos, there is much more in this state. There are a number of beaches at the shore, state parks and forests throughout the state, and many smaller parks as well. Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam is an excellent family destination. So is the Essex Steam Train and River Boat Ride in Essex.
