Travel video about destination Córdoba in Spain.
Cordoba was once the most important metropolis of the Caliphate and today is a city of harmony and contrast. It is a city in which the history of the Caliphs, Romans, Jews and Christians is still very much alive and was the centre of the Arab realm of Al-Andalus that reached its peak in around 1000 A.D.The Ponte Romana extends across the Gudalquivir and leads to the old town. With its sixteen arches the Roman bridge that spans across the river is one of the city’s main landmarks. The city’s most important building is the Mezquita Catedral in the centre of the old town. It is undoubtedly the most splendid mosque of Moorish Islamic origin on the Iberian Peninsula. Construction of the main mosque began in 785 A.D. during the rule of Abd-Ar-Rahman The First. The world’s third largest mosque was built on the site of a West Gothic Christian church that was built on the remains of a Roman temple. The Plaza Santa Marina dates back to the 17th century and was once used as a bull-fighting arena and also as a theatrical stage. Today it is frequently used as a marketplace. The striking monument of the famous Spanish toreador, Manolete, who was killed during a bullfight inside the arena, occupies a large section of the square. Mighty walls surround the Medina. Some of its old gates have survived such as the Puerta De Almodovar that leads into the Jewish quarter. Once known as a wealthy city, Cordoba was considered to be a worthy prize and was thus well protected and fortified. A combination of the Arabic, Jewish and Christian worlds, Cordoba is most deservedly the Pearl of Andalusia!

http://tourvideos.com/ The Grand Mosque of Córdoba in Spain was chosen the most important historic treasure of Spain in a major Spanish public poll in 2007.
The building is most notable for its vast interior space, with 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite. at one time it contained 1283 columns.
There are nineteen aisles from east to west, and thirty-five from north to south.
You appear to be walking about in the silent depths of a great forest rather than in a building; whichever direction you turn to, your eye strays along rows of columns, which cross each other, and lengthen out endlessly, like marble trees growing from the soil. When you walk in.. you feel transported suddenly into another world… overwhelmed, fascinated, amazed and filled with wonder.
this architecture is like a living thing, with a canopy of flowing curves above you formed by the double rows of crossed arches, like the interlaced branches of great trees.
The double arches were a new introduction to architecture, permitting higher ceilings than would otherwise be possible with relatively low columns. The double arches consist of a lower horseshoe arch and an upper semi-circular arch. The full height of the ceiling is able to reach 35 ft.
It was once lighted by more then ten thousand gold, silver and bronze lamps, suspended from the ceiling,
There was originally a Roman temple dedicated to Janus on this site, then a Catholic Christian church built by the Visigoths.
When Muslims conquered Spain in 711, the church was first divided into Muslim and Christian halves, each party worshipping in its respective portion, because the Moors never denied religious liberty to the conquered people. They maintained a harmony between cultures in those days. Seventy years later, the Moors purchased the other half from the Christians and then demolished the entire building, in order to build the grand mosque of Córdoba. A beautiful gilded dome soars high over the Maksoureh, an anteroom for the caliph and his court in front of the mihrab
The mosque underwent numerous subsequent changes and reached its current dimensions in the year 987 with the completion of the outer naves and courtyard.
Construction of the mosque employed thousands of artisans and labourers, over hundreds of years. Moorish kings could afford this because the were greatly enriched by the acquisition of the valuable mines of Iberia, the quarries of marble, and other sources of wealth.
It became the second biggest mosque in size, after the Holy Mosque in Mecca,
The main hall of the mosque was used for a variety of purposes. It served as a central Prayer hall for personal devotion, the five daily Muslim prayers and the special Friday prayers. It also would have served as a hall for teaching and for Sharia Law cases
The edifice also has a richly gilded prayer niche or mihrab. The mihrab is a masterpiece of architectural art, with geometric and flowing designs of plants.
When Córdoba was taken by King Ferdinand III in I 236, the mosque was reconsecrated as a Christian cathedral,
The kings who followed added further Christian features, but little alteration was made in the original structure. It was in I523 the unfortunate idea possessed the bishop, to build a new church in the middle of the Mohammedan temple.
columns were pulled down, the larchwood ceiling was destroyed, and the Christian church was built, very Spanish in its large proportions and wealth of ornament.
Charles V "You have built here what you, or any one, might have built anywhere else ; but you have destroyed what was unique in the world."
There are historical and cultural reasons why such an amazing building was constructed and has survived for a 1,000 years. Córdoba has always been a very important place. Even today is has the largest urban area in the world declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
2,000 years ago at the time of Julius Caesar, Córdoba was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Ulterior. With the fall of Rome it was conquered by the Visigoths and then it was conquered by invading Islamic armies in the eighth century.
Córdoba became the capital of the Islamic Emirate including most of the Iberian Peninsula.
It has been estimated that in the 10th century Córdoba was the world's biggest city, and for several centuries was one of the most advanced cities in the world -- a great center of culture, politics, and finance.
Córdoba had 3,000 mosques, splendid palaces, 300 public baths, medical schools, universities and what was then the largest library in the world, housing from 400,000 to 1,000,000 volumes. it had also become a center for education under its Islamic rulers.

25 Things to do in Barcelona, Spain | Top Attractions Travel Guide Video Transcript:
This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do around town, feel free to add them in the comments below. And if you want to catch our latest travel videos, don't forget to hit subscribe!

25 Things to do in Madrid, Spain | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:
Hola y bienvenidos a Madrid. This week we are in the Spanish capital and we are going to show you twenty five of the best things to do in the city.
Final thoughts on your time in Madrid. Well, I really enjoyed the city. And I really found that it is super walk-able. We were here for 10 days and we hardly had to take the metro at all. We just took the bus once when we were visiting the stadium but the rest of the time we were able to walk wherever we needed to go. And also I think it is a great city for art lovers. There are so many galleries and museums to check out. And a lot of them are free in the evening. So keep that in mind.
And now it is your turn. What did you think of Madrid? You know what? I absolutely loved Madrid. It is a city that just really clicked with me. We have a lot of friends that are living here long term and prior to coming here I had no idea like why would someone want to come to Madrid? Now I totally get it. I love the culture, I love the food, I love the nightlife. Everything is really cheap. I go to the grocery store and I can get a one liter thing of wine for just over a Euro. It is just a really affordable fun city to be in. And it is somewhere I hope I have a chance to come back to again soon.
And that is a wrap of our time in Madrid! We had a splendid time and were truly sad to say goodbye to the city, but that just means we'll have to come back again. If you have any travel tips for Madrid, feel free to share those in the comments below.

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona. Valencia is situated on the banks of the Turia river, on the eastern coast of the Iberian peninsula and the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, fronting the Gulf of Valencia.
The most important places to visit in Valencia are: Cathedral of Valencia (if seen from the top the Latin cross shape of cathedral can be seen. Holy Grail can be seen in one of the cathedral's chapels), Bioparc (it is not another zoo! Make sure you have enough free space on your flash-card), Museum of Science (if you short in time or if you visited something similar in Germany or France you might skip this option, but if you have 1 day, you can buy a combined ticket to visit this museum too), Oceanografic (worth visiting, the best part is dolphin show. Normally overcrowded, so reserving tickets online might be a good idea), Central market and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Valencia travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

Travel video about destination Barcelona in Spain.
Barcelona is one of the most lively harbor cities on the Mediterranean and after Madrid, Spain's second largest city and the capital of Catalonia. Intimate squares, small palaces and tangled alleys provide a good insight into its history as Iberians, Greeks and Romans once had trading posts there.
La Rambla is a wide and shady boulevard that travels through the old town to the harbor and is where life goes on both night and day. It's also where street artists perform, shoeblacks work diligently and portrait painters tout for trade among the passing tourists.
The Museu Marítim is situated in the royal dockyards of Drassanes, that were built when the city was at its zenith. Its buildings are unique examples of Gothic architecture and the vast dimensions of the dockyard allowed 30 ships to be built simultaneously in the name of the Catalonian-Aragon crown.
Few parks are as famous as the Park Güell. With this, Antoni Gaudi created a new design concept in this fabulous garden city. At its entrance, Gaudi placed a colorful lizard as a symbol of the water that is collected in subterranean cisterns and is used for the distribution of water in the park. The city itself is also featured in Gaudi's magnificent fantasies. The Palau Güell was treated to an ostentatious roof with a great array of air shafts and chimneys. But the sight that captures the imagination of most who see it is the amazing façade of the Casa Mila, a unique apartment block without equal. Not a single wall is straight, glass and plaster were used for its façade and colourful ornamental ceramics complete the work.
Barcelona is a melting pot that ranges from Gothic to Modernism, a veritable explosion of joie de vivre and creativity.

Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, off North Africa. Each of these volcanic islands are blessed with spectacular beaches, otherworldly beauty, and perfect weather.
Tenerife receives around 5 million visitors each year, many of whom head to the island’s seaside resorts to enjoy the year-round sunshine and spectacular beaches.
Enjoy golden sands and almost any watersport you can imagine at Las Americas Beach, one of the island’s most popular beaches. Or, take a dip in the crystal waters at Del Duque Beach - just 10 minutes’ drive to the north.
Los Cristianos, once a sleepy fishing village is now a beachside town where you can step straight off the boardwalk onto the soft sand.
For a seaside experience with a difference, head to the north or west to discover sultry black sand beaches. Visit Jardìn Beach…… or drive to Los Gigantes, which nestles against the bottom of magnificent cliffs.
For those who can tear themselves away from the island’s glorious beaches, Tenerife offers generous rewards. Some of the island’s most picturesque villages are only minutes away from the large resorts.
Ever since the golden age of discovery, explorers and thinkers have been drawn to Tenerife’s beautiful shores. In olden times, the trip was a perilous adventure but today, Tenerife is an easy plane ride away.
So, whether you are seeking ancient mysteries sunset over chair or escaping the modern stresses of daily life, come and discover all that Tenerife has to offer.

Costa del Sol – the Sunny Coast – together with its hinterland of great heritage, Andalusia is one of the most typically Spanish parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Those living in Malaga or Marbella can take an excursion to Granada, Sevilla, Gibraltar or even Marocco. They can see the dream castle of Alhambra, "the stone jewel", the Ronda bridge overarching a wild torrent, the "Balcon de Europa", overseeing the romantic bays. Mijas, the 2600 year old mountain village awaits them with its cobbled, picturesque streets, white rows of houses and donkey-carts. They can see megalithic buildings, Moor monuments and baroque cathedrals, bullfights and Spanish riding-schools. The coast of Mediterranean Sea from Almeria to Algeciras is a single, 300 km long sandy beach. No surprise, that the ancient Greeks put their "Garden of the Hesperides" here.

From the days of Charlemagne to Christopher Columbus, Islamic Spain represents one of the most productive intercultural relationships in Western history down to the present day. The lemon tree, the water wheel, the astrolabe and Aristotle's lost philosophy all arrived in Europe through Islamic Spain. Churches and temples that strongly resemble Muslim mosques, the pinnacle of Hebrew literature's Golden Age, the roots of modern medicine and mathematics, and the transmission of Greek philosophy into Western Europe are just a few of the collaborative achievements that form the legacy of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultures interacting on the Iberian Peninsula over seven centuries.
Cities of Light: The Rise & Fall of Islamic Spain, a two-hour documentary film, journeys into one of World History's most fascinating and important periods. With a fresh focus on the many contributions to Western civilization made by Islamic institutions and culture, the film also consistently cleaves to an even-handed presentation of the triumphs and shortcomings, achievements and failures of a centuries-long period when Muslims, Christians, and Jews inhabited the same corner of Western Europe and there built a lasting society that was both part of Christian Europe and the Muslim Middle East.
Cities of Light vividly demonstrates how these very different groups found the means to co-exist and thrive together—and yet how fragile that symbiosis could be. The pluralistic centuries of Medieval Spain ended in the Spanish Inquisition and the formation of an exclusively Catholic Spain.
The legacy of Muslim Spain is rooted in the two hundred fifty year reign of the Umayyad dynasty. This first, long interaction between the Arab Middle East and European Spain laid the basis for a legacy of pluralism—the Spanish term is convivencia. Nowhere in Medieval Europe was central government more lasting, more extensive, or more successful than in Cordoba, Spain's capital under the Muslims. By the tenth century it was Europe's largest, richest, and cleanest city, with running water, public hospitals, and lighted streets—(hence the film's title). The film lingers on the creation and expansion of this stunning capital, where religious and civil institutions were joined in a single governing center with a national tax base.
The opening hour of Cities of Light demonstrates how a culture of pluralism helped fuel an institutionalized love and respect for learning in all its forms, from science and mathematics to philosophy and poetry. The program and its extensive website help viewers trace the development of a new Mediterranean culture deeply influenced by Muslim scholarship and art.
Unlike the Romans and Visigoths before them, Muslim rulers seemed to grasp that the Jews and Christians who preceded them to the Iberian Peninsula were necessary partners in a productive society. The fascinating story of a central bureaucracy staffed by elites from all three faiths, with Jews in all but the highest post and Christian scholars outperforming "native" Arabic speakers in their own language and culture, is a fascinating and powerful antidote to our modern stereotypes concerning Christians, Jews, and Muslims.
Had the story of Islamic Spain stopped here, at the apex of Cordoban central rule, it would be a utopian history unmatched by human beings of any time anywhere. Instead, forces of division, corruption, entropy, and prejudice enter the story. The lack of a clear line of succession, the rise of Crusading and Jihadist cultures, and the advent of foreign armies conspired to bring Cordoba tumbling down in the early eleventh century. Even then, out of its ashes, there gradually arose nearly two dozen vibrant city states scattered around the peninsula, each one vying with the others to be the most powerful, the most cultured.
The second hour of Cities of Light deals with the long, drawn-out fall of the old order, the gradual decline of Muslim power, and the rise of a Roman Catholic Spanish monarchy as the powerful kingdoms of and Castile, Lyon and Aragon combined to form a new national identity. Here we watch the spirit of co-existence finally disappear as Jews and then Muslims, by stages, are forced to convert or go into exile.
Perhaps no other period of European history sheds so much light on our current encounter with extremism. In the story of Islamic Spain, we see what heights may be achieved when adherents to each of these three faiths join together to forge a common culture and, by contrast, how absolutists and narrow minded ideologues with their crusades and jihads may divide and bring down a creative, pluralist society forever.
