A wicked awesome clip from a great movie, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957). Alec Guinness, as Colonel Nicholson of the British Army in WW2, delivers a phenomenal monologue right after the completion of the bridge. Incredible writing, performing, and cinematography.
Sir Alec Guinness, CH, CBE (2 April 1914 -- 5 August 2000) was an English actor. He was featured in several of the Ealing Comedies, including Kind Hearts and Coronets in which he played eight different characters. He later won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Colonel Nicholson in The Bridge on the River Kwai. He is known for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy, Prince Feisal in Lawrence of Arabia, and George Smiley in the TV adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He is also known for his portrayal of Herbert Pocket in Great Expectations (1946).
The Bridge on the River Kwai opens in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Burma in 1943, where a battle of wills rages between camp commander Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) and newly arrived British colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness). Saito insists that Nicholson order his men to build a bridge over the river Kwai, which will be used to transport Japanese munitions. Nicholson refuses, despite all the various "persuasive" devices at Saito's disposal. Finally, Nicholson agrees, not so much to cooperate with his captor as to provide a morale-boosting project for the military engineers under his command. The colonel will prove that, by building a better bridge than Saito's men could build, the British soldier is a superior being even when under the thumb of the enemy. As the bridge goes up, Nicholson becomes obsessed with completing it to perfection, eventually losing sight of the fact that it will benefit the Japanese. Meanwhile, American POW Shears (William Holden), having escaped from the camp, agrees to save himself from a court martial by leading a group of British soldiers back to the camp to destroy Nicholson's bridge. Upon his return, Shears realizes that Nicholson's mania to complete his project has driven him mad. Filmed in Ceylon, Bridge on the River Kwai won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary British filmmaker David Lean, and Best Actor for Guinness. It also won Best Screenplay for Pierre Boulle, the author of the novel on which the film was based, even though the actual writers were blacklisted writers Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, who were given their Oscars under the table

This production leaves the costuming, setting, and properties to the imagination and concentrates on the language of the play. With such noted actors as Richard Burton and Hume Cronyn, the language definitely becomes the focus of the production. Directed by another noted Shakespearean actor, Sir Alec Guinness (better known to the younger audience as Obi Wan Kinobi), the production appeared on the broadway stage at the famed Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in 1964 and was considered a smash hit for the time. Burton received a Tony nomination for his performance and Cronyn received the Tony award for "Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play."

That's right. Guinness was allegedly screwed out of .25% of the film's earnings.

David Prowse, aka known as Darth Vader, was called up by Stanley Kubrick to work on A Clockwork Orange. The first scene he performed was to carry Alex (Malcolm McDowell) up and down the stairs non-stop. Stanley Kubrick then asked him carry Patrick Magee down the stairs in his wheelchair the next day, so David said to Stanley "Well your name's not exactly 'One-take' Kubrick". George Lucas saw the film and when he came to London 5 years later to shoot Star Wars he asked for David Prowse.
George Lucas in fact offered David Prowse the part of either Chewbacca or Darth Vader. The filming was during 1971 and he was worried about being hot during the hottest summer in Great Britain so David chose against the furry Chewbacca costume. The biggest problem was keeping on the Darth Vader helmet and mask which were far too big for his real body
Fighting Alec Guinness and Mark Hamill was a lot of fun and Alec Guinness and David Prowse were give stunt arrangers to train with. Alec and David also practised the fight scenes between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi themselves.
David Prowse also worked for 14 years as the Green Cross Code Man teaching road safety in schools.
David Prowse played Julian (Frank Alexander's bodyguard) in A Clockwork Orange which also starred Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee and Michael Bates.
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope starred Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa. Chewbacca was Peter Mayhew, and James Earl Jones was the voice for Darth Vader.
