Caltrain is working on the Caltrain Communications Based Overlay Signal System (CBOSS) Positive Train Control (PTC) Project to develop a new advanced signal system. The Caltrain CBOSS PTC Project will meet two specific criteria:
Meet the Federal mandate to implement PTC by 2015; and
Increase system capacity to allow for future increases in ridership demand.
Benefits from PTC: The Caltrain CBOSS PTC Project will include PTC requirements as federally mandated by the Railroad Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which requires the installation of PTC on all commuter railroads and some freight railroads by 2015. PTC helps to eliminate train-to-train collisions and over-speed mishaps (trains exceeding the civil speed limit). The train will be automatically stopped when there is a violation of speed or when there is a violation of route. It also provides additional safety for railroad workers on the tracks and requires interoperability between all rail services operating on the same tracks. This interoperability assures compliance among all vehicles using the same tracks with the PTC system. This is important for Caltrain as other operators on Caltrain tracks include commuter rail, freight, and future high-speed rail.
Additional CBOSS Benefits for Caltrain:
• The Caltrain CBOSS PTC Project also specifies additional capabilities to enable increased safety and operating performance for Caltrain and future high-speed rail service. These additional benefits include:
• Increased operating performance of the current signal system, enabling more frequent and more dependable passenger service to meet growing demand.
• Improved grade crossing warning functions: Integrated communication among all subsystems (such as the central control facility, train and wayside) for improved safety performance for highway vehicles and the riding public.
Safe operations between Caltrain and other tenant railroads including future high-speed rail.

This is a ride aboard Caltrain 152 - a local service from San Francisco to San Jose, CA. Train 152 leaves San Francisco at 2:07pm and is scheduled to arrive at San Jose Diridon at 3:38pm, though we were roughly seven minutes late on this trip.
This was recorded for posterity due to the impending electrification and modernization project by Caltrain.
Remember, if you use a Clipper Card like me - tag on AND remember to tag off at the end of your journey!
Stations not included in this video: Broadway, Burlingame, Hillsdale, Atherton, California Avenue, Sunnyvale, and College Park. (Broadway, Atherton and College Park stations are not called at by this service)
At 7:00 in the video, you can see the new San Bruno station under construction, followed shortly after by Caltrain 151 and the now-closed station further south.

Last Wednesday, I decided to spend half of the day at Santa Clara University station. We start the day experiencing the last hour of the morning commute rush hour seeing high-speed Caltrains and Caltrain Baby Bullet express trains bypassing the station and the last two westbound ACE trains, both which are ACE #5 and #7. HIGHLIGHTS of the day were one of ACE's new bi-level bombardier commuter cars on ACE #7 and seeing two of Caltrain's 16 new ex-Metrolink bombardier commuter cars purchased from Metrolink in 2014 and transported to San Jose via a Union Pacific 16-car special on April 2015. Therefore, Caltrain began its 6-car bombardier set service on May 11, 2015 to cope with increasing and alleviating ridership.
Wasn't the best day of railfanning that day, but rather decent.

A sheriff's deputy dragged the motorist from the vehicle after it got stuck on the tracks in Sunnyvale, Northern California, on Monday night, while another officer flagged the Caltrain commuter service down.
The cop and the unidentified man, who police say was drunk, are seen running away from the vehicle as the conductor of starts sounding the horn.
They make it to an adjacent road into oncoming traffic, but the man then falls onto the tarmac, forcing the officer to drag him along the floor.
Just seconds later the train smashes into the front of the car.
San Mateo County Sheriff's spokesman Salvador Zuno told NBC Bay Area: 'If it had not been for the deputies being at the right place at the right time, the driver would have been significantly injured.
He added: 'I believe because of their actions this person is alive today.'
Zuno said deputies Lance Whitted and Erik Rueppel were just a few cars away when they saw the vehicle had collided into the crossing guard.
They ran to the collision and found major front-end damage to the vehicle and that a train was approaching the area.
One of the deputies ran on the tracks to notify the incoming train, while the other driver removed the driver from the vehicle.
Caltrain, the operators of the train, also tweeted their thanks to the department. They wrote:
'Big shout out to [San Mateo County Sheriff's] deputies on scene who were able to pull the driver from the vehicle, preventing a possible tragedy.
