Yoga is all around us these days. From
Russell Simmons,
Damon Wayans,
Sting to
Madonna, to maybe even your next door neighbor, everyone is hooked upon this fitness craze and with good cause. As a form of physical exercise, Yoga indeed is a force to be reckoned with. But just how can one go about using yoga for beginners? It is my hope that as a Yoga practitioner and enthusiast, this article will be of assistance in this regard.
If you have been considering learning yoga or have recently begun a yoga practice, I hope to provide you with some useful and helpful tips in which may be helpful to you in using yoga for beginners.
Now, I would like to
point out certain key factors.
Friends, unlike most other styles or tutorials on Yoga that seem to execute the poses in haphazard and disorderly fashions (e.g doing a random headstand before a bow pose), the style of Yoga that we’ll be covering in this video adheres to specific and methodical principles when it comes to doing Yoga
Exercises.
Therefore, please keep the following in mind concerning the style of Yoga we are about to cover:
1. In this video, we will follow the correct order of Yoga
Poses (aka asanas) as recommended by Sivānanda Saraswati, (founder of the “
Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy”) his protégé-Swami Vishnu-Devananda (author of the “
Complete Illustrated
Book of Yoga”) and
BKS Iyengar (author of “
Light on Yoga” )
2. The order of poses in this tutorial will be as follows:
a. Sun Salutations (
Warm Up)
b.
Inversions (e.g.
Headstand & Shoulder-stand with accompanying
Counter Poses)
c.
Forward Bending Exercises (e.g.
Wind relieving, Plough, and Head-to knee poses)
d. Backward Bending Exercises (e.g.
Inclined plane pose, bow pose and wheel pose)
e. Spinal
Twists
f.
Balancing Exercises (e.g.
Peacock Pose,
Crow Pose, Plank and
Side Plank Poses)
g. Exercises in the Sitting
Position (e.g.
Diamond Pose,
Frog Pose, Seated Staff Pose)
h. Exercises in the Standing Position (e.g.
Mountain Pose,
Tree Pose,
Triangle Poses)
i. Relaxation
3. In this video tutorial, each pose is executed with the concept of counter-poses in mind since Yoga pays close attention to the spine. Consequently, any exercise executed is to be countered with the performance of its direct opposite and for a certain time. So, for example, if a forward bending exercise is performed it must be offset with a back-bending exercise, if a pose is executed on the left side of the body, it must be offset on the right and so on and so forth.
4. While executing the static (stationary) poses in this video tutorial, an emphasis is placed on breathing when executing the poses. So the Yoga
Square method of breathing (inhalation, retention & exhalation) comes into play.
So, please keep these 4 (four) points in mind as we get started with the
Sivananda Style of Yoga!
Now, the
Sivananda Yoga style follows the teachings of
Swami Sivananda, as brought to the west by his disciple
Swami Vishnu-devananda.
Vishnu-devananda came to the
United States in
1957, making this style of practice an important part of yoga's first wave of popularity outside
India. There are now
Sivananda yoga centers in major cities in the
U.S. and western
Europe, as well as nine ashram retreats.
Philosophy
The method is based upon five principles:
1.
Proper exercise (Asana,
2. Proper breathing (Pranayama)
3. Proper relaxation (Savasana)
4. Proper diet (Vegetarian)
5.
Positive thinking (Vedanta) and meditation (Dhyana)
