The strongest earthquake to hit Christchurch in years rocked the New Zealand city on Sunday, causing a cliff to collapse into the ocean.
The quake was the strongest to hit Christchurch since 2011 when the city experience three severe tremors above a magnitude six, including the deadly 6.3 quake which killed 185 people on 22 February.

This is the largest earthquake to strike Oklahoma in 5 years time, and the 3rd largest in state history.
In 2011, a M5.6 struck Oklahoma , again at a fracking / pumping operation, at the time (in 2011) professionals actually tried to DENY that fracking caused earthquakes.
Now we know better, the 2011 M5.6 was caused by fracking wastewater injection, and now the M5.1 in 2016 is caused by the same culprit.
The pressure that mother nature is putting on the operations is proving to be far too strong for the operations to handle. The pressure is coming from the Pacific Northwest + West coast, pressing to the East along the edge of the Craton.

A large M5.8 earthquake has struck 10 miles off the shores of Christchurch New Zealand.
Video was sent in by multiple viewers showing 1st hand shots of Whitewash Head cliffs collapsing into the ocean.

3.25pm: Christchurch City Council is receiving reports of damage throughout the city and says cliffs have collapsed at Whitewash Heads, Sumner, and also on Wakefield Avenue.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said that burst watermains are also causing problems in some areas of the city and valves at the city's reservoirs automatically closed. Some pump stations have been affected by power outages and stand-by generators are being brought in to use.
Ms Dalziel says there is general traffic congestion as people attempt to get home, with some traffic signals initially affected.
The Lyttelton Road Tunnel is open, however there is concern about Anzac Bridge, Fitzgerald Twin Bridges and Gladstone Quay and all are being checked.

University of California, Berkeley, scientists released a free Android app that taps a smartphone’s ability to record ground shaking from an earthquake, with the goal of creating a worldwide seismic detection network that could eventually warn users of impending jolts from nearby quakes.

The app, called MyShake, will be available to the public Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 from the Google Play Store and runs in the background with little power, so that a phone’s onboard accelerometers can record local shaking any time of the day or night. For now, the app only collects information from the accelerometers, analyzes it and, if it fits the vibrational profile of a quake, relays it and the phone’s GPS coordinates to the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory for analysis.
Once enough people are using it and the bugs are worked out, however, UC Berkeley seismologists plan to use the data to warn people miles from ground zero that shaking is rumbling their way. An iPhone app is also planned.

Japan earthquake and Tsunami 2011 - Shocking video
An erupting volcanic island that is expanding off Japan could trigger a tsunami if its freshly-formed lava slopes collapse into the sea, scientists say.
The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1000 kilometres south of Tokyo.
It now covers 1.26 square kilometres.
The island's craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres of lava every day - enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools - which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.
"If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island's slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami," warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.
He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one metre tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima - 130kms away - in around 18 minutes, he said.
Chichijima, home to about 2000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.
"The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it's impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation," Maeno added.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.
"We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts ... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take," he said.
Japan's northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns.

The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time. Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu (born 7 November 1988), better known by his stage name Tinie Tempah, is an English rapper. He made his first mixtape in 2007; his first album, Disc-Overy, debuted at number one in October 2010 and was preceded by two number-one singles.
Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu, was born in London, England on 7 November 1988, and is of Ibusa, Delta State, Nigerian origin. He lived on the Aylesbury Estate in South East London until he was 12 with his parents and three younger siblings. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Abbey Wood, London SE2, (now known as St. Paul's Academy). He went on to study A Levels at St Francis Xavier Sixth Form College, SW12. This is the largest earthquake to strike Oklahoma in 5 years time, and the 3rd largest in state history.
In 2011, a M5.6 struck Oklahoma , again at a fracking / pumping operation, at the time (in 2011) professionals actually tried to DENY that fracking caused earthquakes.
Now we know better, the 2011 M5.6 was caused by fracking wastewater injection, and now the M5.1 in 2016 is caused by the same culprit.
The pressure that mother nature is putting on the operations is proving to be far too strong for the operations to handle. The pressure is coming from the Pacific Northwest + West coast, pressing to the East along the edge of the Craton.

3.25pm: Christchurch City Council is receiving reports of damage throughout the city and says cliffs have collapsed at Whitewash Heads, Sumner, and also on Wakefield Avenue.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said that burst watermains are also causing problems in some areas of the city and valves at the city's reservoirs automatically closed. Some pump stations have been affected by power outages and stand-by generators are being brought in to use.
Ms Dalziel says there is general traffic congestion as people attempt to get home, with some traffic signals initially affected.
The Lyttelton Road Tunnel is open, however there is concern about Anzac Bridge, Fitzgerald Twin Bridges and Gladstone Quay and all are being checked.

University of California, Berkeley, scientists released a free Android app that taps a smartphone’s ability to record ground shaking from an earthquake, with the goal of creating a worldwide seismic detection network that could eventually warn users of impending jolts from nearby quakes.

The app, called MyShake, will be available to the public Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 from the Google Play Store and runs in the background with little power, so that a phone’s onboard accelerometers can record local shaking any time of the day or night. For now, the app only collects information from the accelerometers, analyzes it and, if it fits the vibrational profile of a quake, relays it and the phone’s GPS coordinates to the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory for analysis.
Once enough people are using it and the bugs are worked out, however, UC Berkeley seismologists plan to use the data to warn people miles from ground zero that shaking is rumbling their way. An iPhone app is also planned.

An erupting volcanic island that is expanding off Japan could trigger a tsunami if its freshly-formed lava slopes collapse into the sea, scientists say.
The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1000 kilometres south of Tokyo.
It now covers 1.26 square kilometres.
The island's craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres of lava every day - enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools - which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.
"If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island's slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami," warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.
He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one metre tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima - 130kms away - in around 18 minutes, he said.
Chichijima, home to about 2000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.
"The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it's impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation," Maeno added.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.
"We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts ... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take," he said.
Japan's northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns.

NEW ZEALAND: Cliff Collapses Into Sea as Earthquake Rattles Christchurch February 14 DRAMATIC
Cliffs have collapsed near Christchurch and there’s minor damage across the New Zealand city after a magnitude 5.7 earthquake.
It struck shortly after 1pm on Sunday (11am AEDT), just a day after Prime Minister John Key visited the city he grew up in to highlight rejuvenation from devastating quakes five years ago. The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management is activating in response in Wellington and St John ambulance has set up an emergency centre locally but says call numbers have returned to normal.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel says cliffs collapsed at Whitewash Heads, Sumner, and on Wakefield Avenue on the eastern side of Richmond Hill.
There was traffic chaos as people rushed home to check on loved ones. Water mains are burst and damaged cellphone sites are being repaired.

Christchurch Hospital reports no increase above normal in patient numbers and it’s checking minor damage to its buildings. It’s moving mothers and babies from Burwood Hospital in the eastern suburbs as a precaution.
“Grabbed the TV to stop it falling, books off, car alarms set off by it in the neighbourhood,” Belinda McCammon tweeted immediately after the quake.
“Suddenly the air all full of sirens and birds,” another person tweeted.
Aftershocks of up to 3.5 continue to hit the city.
A spokesman for Sumner Surf Life Saving Club said the club was forming a sea patrol with the Taylors Mistake club to check no boaties or walkers had been caught by falling rubble around the cliffs.
Everyone was “a bit freaked out”, he said.
Sumner was badly hit by the 6.3 magnitude February 22, 2011 quake, and three people died there out of the city total of 185. Civil defence has confirmed no tsunami threat has been issued. A Fire Service spokesman said there were call-outs but “not too much”.
Orion Energy says about 500 customers lost power in northeast Christchurch and Piper Valley on Banks Peninsula. The number is now down to 190.
Shopping malls and Canterbury University were evacuated as a precaution.
This quake was centred 15km east of Christchurch and was 31km deep — with people as far north as Palmerston North and as far south as Dunedin reporting they felt it.
GeoNet spokeswoman Anna Kaiser told AAP the quake was centred slightly offshore and was to the east of a sequence of quakes since the so-called Darfield quake damaged Christchurch.
She said quakes had been progressively moving eastwards.

GeoNet Science, the official New Zealand earthquake monitoring service, warned of aftershocks following the "severe intensity" quake.
There have been more than 40 aftershocks, GeoNet reported.
A police spokesman said there were no reports of damage or major injuries, although the tremor did cause "some major rocks to be dislodged into the sea" near Sumner.
The Christchurch City Council said cliffs collapsed in several places along the surrounding coast, spreading large clouds of billowing dust across the sea and hills.
"Obviously with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake so close to the eastern coast of Christchurch, it's certainly been a big shock for the city, a setback in terms of people's confidence and feeling of security," Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said.
"Our city is stronger than it was five years ago. There are going to be a lot of people out there feeling very vulnerable."
Several buildings were evacuated in Christchurch as a precaution.
Jenny Krex, the manager of a coffee shop in the seaside suburb of Sumner, told the New Zealand Herald items broke in her shop after the quake struck.
"Everyone got a big fright, we had everyone running out," she said.
"I made sure everyone was OK, it was quite a big shock. It's crazy out here at the moment."
Videos have started to emerge online of pools turning to waves as water is churned up and rockcliffs crumbling.
The quake struck a week before the fifth anniversary of a deadly magnitude 6.3 tremor which killed 185 people and caused billions of dollars of damage in one of New Zealand's deadliest disasters.
GeoNet said the epicentre of the latest earthquake was 15 kilometres east of the city at a depth of 15 kilometres.
GeoNet spokeswoman Caroline Little said the earthquake was too small to cause a tsunami.
She said that with such tremors: "People and animals are alarmed, and many run outside. Walking steadily is difficult ... objects fall from walls and shelves."
New Zealand is on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, which form part of the so-called "Ring of Fire".
The country experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year.

Almost exactly five years later, the quake Sunday caused a cliff to crumble near Taylor's Mistake bay.
Parts of the cliff retreated 5 meters (16 feet), geotechnical engineer Jan Kupec Linz told CNN affiliate TVNZ.
"I'd taken five of my rookies to do some cliff work and some cliff jumping," Craig Jamison, a member of the Taylor's Mistake Surf Life Saving Club, told the affiliate.
"We've definitely had a spike in calls shortly after the quake involving what we call fainting type events, chest pain, shortness of breath and falls," local ambulance manager Kerry Mitchell told TVNZ.

The pair were at Godley Heads when the cliffs started collapsing into the sea around 50 metres (164ft) from where they were sitting.
Ms Russell told The Press newspaper: "It literally sounded like dynamite just went off.
"You just heard all the cliffs give way around us, never sprinted so quickly in my life."
The couple - among some 30 people at the tourist spot - had originally planned to sit on the cliff edge but changed their mind at the last minute, she said.
The collapse, which was captured on video, sent a huge cloud of dust across the bay at Sumner.
No serious injuries were reported and there was no major damage to Christchurch, which was devastated by a 2011 earthquake that killed 200 people.
Police said some people were evacuated from buildings after the latest quake, and there were some reports of damage from liquefaction - when an earthquake causes loose sand and silt saturated with water to behave like liquid.
The epicentre was nine miles (15km) east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of nine miles and there were more than 40 aftershocks, the country's seismological body Geonet said.
Christchurch City Council said cliffs collapsed in several places along the coast.

The pair were among dozens of people to have a lucky escape as a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch.
A couple have told how they ran for their lives as an earthquake caused cliffs to collapse yards from where they were having a Valentine's Day picnic.
Emma Russell and her boyfriend were enjoying a romantic day out when the 5.7 magnitude quake hit the Christchurch area in New Zealand at lunchtime on Sunday (just after midnight in the UK).
The pair were at Godley Heads when the cliffs started collapsing into the sea around 50 metres (164ft) from where they were sitting.
Ms Russell told The Press newspaper: "It literally sounded like dynamite just went off.
"You just heard all the cliffs give way around us, never sprinted so quickly in my life."
The couple - among some 30 people at the tourist spot - had originally planned to sit on the cliff edge but changed their mind at the last minute, she said.
The collapse, which was captured on video, sent a huge cloud of dust across the bay at Sumner.
No serious injuries were reported and there was no major damage to Christchurch, which was devastated by a 2011 earthquake that killed 200 people.
Police said some people were evacuated from buildings after the latest quake, and there were some reports of damage from liquefaction - when an earthquake causes loose sand and silt saturated with water to behave like liquid.
The epicentre was nine miles (15km) east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of nine miles and there were more than 40 aftershocks, the country's seismological body Geonet said.
Christchurch City Council said cliffs collapsed in several places along the coast.
The city's mayor Lianne Dalziel said: "Obviously with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake so close to the eastern coast of Christchurch its certainly been a big shock for the city, a set back in terms of people's confidence and feeling of security.
"Our city is stronger than it was five years ago. There are going to be a lot of people out there feeling very vulnerable."

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale (SR) rocked Oklahoma on Saturday (February 13th 2016).
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter was about 17 miles from Fairview.
"We have not received reports of damage, but the shock was quite strong," said Cheryl Landis of Major County Sheriff's office told CNN.
The shock occurred at 12:07 early morning Oklahoma time, with a depth of one kilometer. USGS says this is the strongest earthquake in Oklahoma since 2011.
Although Oklahoma is often hit by earthquakes long ago, the USGS said there was a significant increase in the number since 2009.
USGS calls wastewater injected into geological formations likely to be a factor causing increased seismic activity. This injection process - called hydraulic fracturing - commonly used by a number of companies to extract oil and natural gas from the bowels of the Earth.

New unrest has again developed below the West Pacific over the past several days, a new series of earthquakes has also progressed across the United States (all the way to the East coast - New Jersey + West Virginia).
Fracking operations resumed movement in Colorado, Texas, and carries on moving across Oklahoma + Kansas. Additionally the oil / gas pumping operation in Alberta Canada was struck.
West Coast California dormant volcanoes again showing renewed activity above M3.0 reaching to a M4.3 which struck South Utah near a series of dormant volcanoes.
All signs pointing towards another round of movement from the Gorda Escarpment Northwards across the Western coast of the USA (Across Oregon and Washington into Vancouver BC).
All areas along the edge of the craton need to be focused on what happens next! The new movement coming to the West coast should be followed be new movement in the Midwest, and finally another round of earthquakes should strike along the Northeast coast of the USA.
Just like we saw movement over the past 2 weeks progress from the West coast. Starting out with multiple M4.8 / M4.9 off the coast , then followed by a M4.8 at the Oklahoma fracking operations, finally resulting in "mystery booms + rumbles" in New Jersey, as well as an earthquake about 2 weeks BEFORE the booms which struck New Jersey .
Watch for West coast movement, this will determine craton edge movement to the East across Yellowstone / Idaho, as well as the fracking operations in Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas.
Dormant volcanoes along the West coast may see a new flurry of M4.0 to possibly even M5.0 events striking East of Los Angeles spreading Northward across the Nevada border.
Watch the West Pacific for much larger activity to strike the silent areas named in the video, Japan (North Central going across Hokkaido), and the silent area Southward along the Izu ridge.
Across Asia, North India, towards Myanmar may see a large event IF we see any additional deep earthquakes in the West Pacific. Could be noteworthy in the next few weeks. Could be in the M7.0+ range.

Add in the large fissure which formed in Central Eastern Wyoming in the Bighorn Mountains, East of Yellowstone supervolcano , and a greater picture of seismic unrest along the West coast of the United States begins to take shape.
There may indeed be large earthquake activity to strike the West coast of the United States in the next week or so, most likely to strike near one of the already moving dormant volcanoes. Maybe some movement in Southeast California might take place near one of the dormant volcanic buttes in the region.
Internationally, North Japan might take a hit this week with a larger event following this previous weeks M5.4, and the new deep earthquakes below Japan + Eastern China. Could produce a new volcanic eruption after several weeks with nothing to report from the area.

Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Squar, the Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the Changu Narayan Temple and the Swayambhunath Stupa. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.
Continued aftershocks occurred throughout Nepal within 15–20 minute intervals, with one shock reaching a magnitude of 6.7 on 26 April at 12:54:08 NST. The country also had a continued risk of landslides.
A major aftershock occurred on 12 May 2015 at 12:51 NST with a moment magnitude of 7.3. The epicenter was near the Chinese border between the capital of Kathmandu and Mt. Everest. More than 200 people were killed and more than 2,500 were injured by this aftershock.

The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku (東北地方太平洋沖地震 Tōhoku-chihō Taiheiyō Oki Jishin) was a magnitude 9.0 (Mw) undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on Friday 11 March 2011,[2][3][8] with the epicentre approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 30 km (19 mi).[2][9] The earthquake is also often referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan earthquake (東日本大震災 Higashi nihon daishinsai?)[10][11][12][fn 1] and also known as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake,[13] and the 3.11 earthquake. On 10 March 2015, a Japanese National Police Agency report confirmed 15,891 deaths,[23] 6,152 injured,[24] and 2,584 people missing[25] across twenty prefectures, as well as 228,863 people living away from their home in either temporary housing or due to permanent relocation.[26] A February 10, 2014 agency report listed 127,290 buildings totally collapsed, with a further 272,788 buildings 'half collapsed', and another 747,989 buildings partially damaged.[27] The earthquake and tsunami also caused extensive and severe structural damage in north-eastern Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas, and a dam collapse.[18][28] Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said, "In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan."[29] Around 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.5 million without water.[30]
The tsunami caused nuclear accidents, primarily the level 7 meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex, and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundreds of thousands of residents.[31][32] Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due to hydrogen gas that had built up within their outer containment buildings after cooling system failure resulting from the loss of electrical power. Residents within a 20 km (12 mi) radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and a 10 km (6.2 mi) radius of the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant were evacuated. In addition, the U.S. recommended that its citizens evacuate everyone within up to 80 km (50 mi) of the plant.[33]
Early estimates placed insured losses from the earthquake alone at US$14.5 to $34.6 billion.[34] The Bank of Japan offered ¥15 trillion (US$183 billion) to the banking system on 14 March in an effort to normalize market conditions.[35] The World Bank's estimated economic cost was US$235 billion, making it the costliest natural disaster in world history.
