Ghost stations is the usual English translation for the German word Geisterbahnhöfe. This term was used to describe certain stations on Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn metro networks that were closed during the period of Berlin's division during the Cold War. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe any disused station on an underground railway line, especially those actively passed through by passenger trains.
An abandoned (or disused) railway station is a building or structure which was constructed to serve as a railway station but has fallen into disuse. There are various circumstances when this may occur - a railway company may fall bankrupt, or the station may be closed due to the failure of economic activitiy such as insufficient passenger numbers, operational reasons such as the diversion or replacement of the line. In some instances, the railway line may continue in operation while the station is closed. Additionally, stations may sometimes be resited along the route of the line to new premises - examples of this include opening a replacement station nearer to the centre of population, or building a larger station on a less restricted site to cope with high passenger numbers.
Notable cases where railway stations have fallen into disuse include the Beeching Axe, a 1960s programme of mass closures of unprofitable railway lines by the British Government. The London Underground system is also noted for its list of closed stations. During the time of the Berlin Wall, a number of Berlin U-Bahn stations on West Berlin lines became "ghost stations" (Geisterbahnhöfe) because they were on lines which passed through East Berlin territory.
Railway stations and lines which fall into disuse may become overgrown. Some former railway lines are repurposed as managed nature reserves, trails or other tourist attractions - for example Hellfire Pass, the route of the former "Death Railway" in Thailand. Many former railways are converted into long-distance cycleways, such as large sections of the National Cycle Network in the United Kingdom. In rural areas, former railway station buildings are often converted into private residences. Examples include many of the stations on the closed Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway in England.
Architecturally and historically notable station buildings may present a problem if they are protected under building preservation laws but fall into disuse. Such buildings are often simply demolished (such as Broad Street railway station (London); a similar fate threatens Michigan Central Station), or they may be preserved as part of a heritage railway. Often, in order to be retained as commercially viable structures within an urban environment, or as part of an urban regeneration project, they may be repurposed for alternative activities. Prominent examples include the ornate Gare d'Orsay in Paris, France, which was converted into the Musée d'Orsay art gallery; and Manchester Central railway station which was put to new use first as a car park, and later refurbished as the Manchester Central Conference Centre. The Ottawa Convention Centre is a former station, as are railway museums Memory Junction in Brighton and Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario in Smiths Falls. In Prescott the rail station houses historical society offices; in Lac-Mégantic and Kingston a former station houses a tourism information office. Stations have also been transformed into restaurants or private residences.
Many abandoned railway stations and line are now being brought back into operational service, notably in the UK where environmental policy is driving the reversal of some of the Beeching closures of the 1960s. In London the Docklands Light Railway made use of disused railway infrastructure for much of its construction; in Manchester it is proposed to expand the Metrolink light rail system by re-opening abandoned rail lines; and in Scotland, the Scottish Government has plans to bring the Waverley Line back into passenger service.

The original capital of Wales, Machynlleth is a thriving bustling market town. Its charter to hold a market was granted by Edward I in 1210 and it has continued every Wednesday ever since. Charles I stayed at the Royal House probably at the time of the battle of Dyfi Bridge. King Henry VII passed through in 1485 on his way to the Battle of Bosworth. He is said to have drank from the well.

Welcome to the beautiful village of Knucklas, Powys.
The village of Knucklas in Powys is nestled in an idyllic location near to Knighton, right on the England/Wales border. Quietly situated on the Welsh side of Offa's Dyke the area is popular with walkers and those who like to ramble around Radnorshire. The river Teme finds it way down the valley on its lazy journey to Knighton before heading to Ludlow and eventually joining the river Severn at Worcester. Above the village of Knucklas sits Castle Hill. Knucklas or originally Cnwclas in Welsh can been found it historical documents dating all the way back to the 13th century. The legend of King Arthur apparently has the story that he married Guinevere on Castle Hill but there is obviously no evidence to support this. Little is known about the castle that once existed there and no real archeology work has ever been done on the site. It does however lend its name to the local pub - the Castle Inn. Nearby stand the 13 arched viaduct which was built around 1860 and carried the Heart of Wales train line between Shrewsbury and Swansea. It is a stone construction with round turrets either side with parapet-ed tops. Knucklas Community Centre can also be found here. The local authority is Powys County Council.

Powys
Powys (/ˈpoʊ.ɪs/ or /ˈpaʊ.ɪs/;Welsh: [ˈpowɪs]) is a principal area, local-government county and preserved county in Mid Wales. It is named after the successor Kingdom of Powys, which formed after the Romans withdrew from Britain.
Geography
Powys covers the historic counties of Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire, most of Brecknockshire (Breconshire), and a small part of Denbighshire — an area of 5,179 km² (2,000 sq miles), making it the largest county in Wales by land area.
It is bounded to the north by Gwynedd, Denbighshire and Wrexham; to the west by Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire; to the east by Shropshire and Herefordshire; and to the south by Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and Neath Port Talbot.
Most of Powys is mountainous, with north-south transport being difficult.
The majority of the Powys population lives in villages and small towns. The largest towns are Newtown, Ystradgynlais, Brecon, and Welshpool with populations of 12,783, 9,004, 7,901 and 6,269 respectively (2001). Powys has the lowest population density of all the principal areas of Wales.

Wales (
i/ˈweɪlz/; Welsh: Cymru [ˈkəm.rɨ]) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain,bordered by England to its east, the Irish Sea to its north and west, and the Bristol Channel to its south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779 km2 (8,023 sq mi). Wales has over 1,680 miles (2,700 km) of coastline and is largely mountainous, with its higher peaks in the north and central areas, including Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), its highest summit. The country lies within the north temperate zone and has a changeable, maritime climate.
Welsh national identity emerged among the Celtic Britons after the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the 5th century, and Wales is regarded as one of the modern Celtic nations. Llywelyn ap Gruffudd's death in 1282 marked the completion of Edward I of England's conquest of Wales, though Owain Glyndŵr briefly restored independence to what was to become modern Wales, in the early 15th century. The whole of Wales was annexed by England and incorporated within the English legal system under the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542. Distinctive Welsh politics developed in the 19th century. Welsh Liberalism, exemplified in the early 20th century by Lloyd George, was displaced by the growth of socialism and the Labour Party. Welsh national feeling grew over the century; Plaid Cymru was formed in 1925 and the Welsh Language Society in 1962. Established under the Government of Wales Act 1998, the National Assembly for Wales holds responsibility for a range of devolved policy matters.

Ystradgynlais (Welsh: [ˌəsdradˈɡənlais], English /ˌʌstrədˈɡʌnlaɪs/) is a town on the River Tawe in southwest Powys. The town, which is the largest in the historic county of Brecknockshire and the second largest in the administrative area of Powys, grew around the ironmaking, coal mining and watchmaking industries.
History
The place-name Ystradgynlais, meaning 'vale of the river Cynlais' - Cynlais may be a personal name, or derive from cyn ('chisel') and glais ('stream') - is first recorded in 1372. In the 1600s there were only a couple of houses by the church and a pub (now the rectory). In 1801 there were only 993 residents in Ystradgynlais living in only 196 houses. The first documented written evidence of iron working in the area was at Ynyscedwyn and is of a deed of release dated 1729. By 1750 there were only 7 furnaces in south Wales, one of which was at Ynyscedwyn.
The first written evidence of coal workings in the area was in 1780 in Wauclawdd. Most of the coal dug up in the area was sent to the blast furnaces of the iron works. By 1790 the full extent of the mineral resources in the valley were better known and it was realised that to exploit these to the full, improved transport would be essential.

Ghost stations is the usual English translation for the German word Geisterbahnhöfe. This term was used to describe certain stations on Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn metro networks that were closed during the period of Berlin's division during the Cold War. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe any disused station on an underground railway line, especially those actively passed through by passenger trains.

The village of Knucklas in Powys is nestled in an idyllic location near to Knighton, right on the England/Wales border. Quietly situated on the Welsh side of Offa's Dyke the area is popular with walkers and those who like to ramble around Radnorshire. The river Teme finds it way down the valley on its lazy journey to Knighton before heading to Ludlow and eventually joining the river Severn at Worcester. Above the village of Knucklas sits Castle Hill. Knucklas or originally Cnwclas in Welsh can been found it historical documents dating all the way back to the 13th century. It is a stone construction with round turrets either side with parapet-ed tops. Knucklas Community Centre can also be found here. The local authority is Powys County Council.

The original capital of Wales, Machynlleth is a thriving bustling market town. Its charter to hold a market was granted by Edward I in 1210 and it has continued every Wednesday ever since. Charles I stayed at the Royal House probably at the time of the battle of Dyfi Bridge. King Henry VII passed through in 1485 on his way to the Battle of Bosworth. He is said to have drank from the well.

The beautiful village of Knucklas in Powys, Wales
Welcome to the beautiful village of Knucklas, Powys. The village of Knucklas in Powys is nestled in an idyllic location near to Knighton, right on the England/Wales border. Quietly situated on the Welsh side of Offa's Dyke the area is popular with walkers and those who like to ramble around Radnorshire. The river Teme finds it way down the valley on its lazy journey to Knighton before heading to Ludlow and eventually joining the river Severn at Worcester. Ghost stations is the usual English translation for the German word Geisterbahnhöfe. This term was used to describe certain stations on Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn metro networks that were closed during the period of Berlin's division during the Cold War. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe any disused station on an underground railway line, especially those actively passed through by passenger trains.
An abandoned (or disused) railway station is a building or structure which was constructed to serve as a railway station but has fallen into disuse. There are various circumstances when this may occur - a railway company may fall bankrupt, or the station may be closed due to the failure of economic activitiy such as insufficient passenger numbers, operational reasons such as the diversion or replacement of the line. In some instances, the railway line may continue in operation while the station is closed. Additionally, stations may sometimes be resited along the route of the line to new premises - examples of this include opening a replacement station nearer to the centre of population, or building a larger station on a less restricted site to cope with high passenger numbers.
Notable cases where railway stations have fallen into disuse include the Beeching Axe, a 1960s programme of mass closures of unprofitable railway lines by the British Government. The London Underground system is also noted for its list of closed stations. During the time of the Berlin Wall, a number of Berlin U-Bahn stations on West Berlin lines became "ghost stations" (Geisterbahnhöfe) because they were on lines which passed through East Berlin territory.
Railway stations and lines which fall into disuse may become overgrown. Some former railway lines are repurposed as managed nature reserves, trails or other tourist attractions - for example Hellfire Pass, the route of the former "Death Railway" in Thailand. Many former railways are converted into long-distance cycleways, such as large sections of the National Cycle Network in the United Kingdom. In rural areas, former railway station buildings are often converted into private residences. Examples include many of the stations on the closed Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway in England.
Architecturally and historically notable station buildings may present a problem if they are protected under building preservation laws but fall into disuse. Such buildings are often simply demolished (such as Broad Street railway station (London); a similar fate threatens Michigan Central Station), or they may be preserved as part of a heritage railway. Often, in order to be retained as commercially viable structures within an urban environment, or as part of an urban regeneration project, they may be repurposed for alternative activities. Prominent examples include the ornate Gare d'Orsay in Paris, France, which was converted into the Musée d'Orsay art gallery; and Manchester Central railway station which was put to new use first as a car park, and later refurbished as the Manchester Central Conference Centre. The Ottawa Convention Centre is a former station, as are railway museums Memory Junction in Brighton and Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario in Smiths Falls. In Prescott the rail station houses historical society offices; in Lac-Mégantic and Kingston a former station houses a tourism information office. Welcome to the beautiful village of Knucklas, Powys.
The village of Knucklas in Powys is nestled in an idyllic location near to Knighton, right on the England/Wales border. Quietly situated on the Welsh side of Offa's Dyke the area is popular with walkers and those who like to ramble around Radnorshire. The river Teme finds it way down the valley on its lazy journey to Knighton before heading to Ludlow and eventually joining the river Severn at Worcester. Above the village of Knucklas sits Castle Hill. Knucklas or originally Cnwclas in Welsh can been found it historical documents dating all the way back to the 13th century. The legend of King Arthur apparently has the story that he married Guinevere on Castle Hill but there is obviously no evidence to support this. Little is known about the castle that once existed there and no real archeology work has ever been done on the site. It does however lend its name to the local pub - the Castle Inn. Nearby stand the 13 arched viaduct which was built around 1860 and carried the Heart of Wales train line between Shrewsbury and Swansea. It is a stone construction with round turrets either side with parapet-ed tops. Knucklas Community Centre can also be found here. The local authority is Powys County Council.
