Wide of trolly carrying aid STORYLINE Some displaced people took shelter inside a Hindu temple as floodwater made another break on Saturday in the levees protecting the southern Pakistani city of Thatta, which has been abandoned by thousands of its residents. A Thatta disaster management official said more than 175-thousand people had left the city, leaving few behind. Some are heading for nearby towns or cities, whereas others took shelter inside a Hindu temple. There they prayed to Kali Mata, a Hindu goddess associated with eternal energy. They also cooked. "Yesterday, the whole night we prayed to Kali Mata that 'you saved us but you also save lives of those who are dying in the floodwater,'" said Geeta Bai, who is displaced. The latest levee breach, which happened early Saturday, could leave the outskirts of Thatta flooded by later in the day. The city is about 75 miles (125 kilometres) southeast of the major coastal city of Karachi. More than 8 million people are in need of emergency assistance across the country. The United Nations, the Pakistani army and a host of local and international relief groups have been rushing aid workers, medicine, food and water to the affected regions, but are unable to reach many people. Aid from both Japan and Egypt arrived at Multan air base on Saturday. The Japanese government sent another helicopter to provide relief to flooded areas. A Japanese army official said they would begin the relief effort in two to three days. An Egyptian army plane also arrived carrying medicine, food and tents. The UK's department for International Development (DFID) has also provided urgently-needed shelter for thousands of people driven from their homes in southern Pakistan. A C17, the Royal Air Force's largest transport aircraft, arrived at Chaklala airbase, Rawalpindi on Saturday, carrying over 3000 DFID shelter kits.
