Lyrics:
America was poor in the Great Depression
Millions without jobs in every profession
How will we eat was a daily question
What are all the lessons of the Great Depression?
Before the Great Depression, everything seemed great
It was the Roaring 1920’s, people liked to celebrate
A lotta food on their plate
And there was money to make
Factories were selling automobiles like hot cakes
Not to mention household appliances and radios
Flashy things, the economy was based on those
But the problem was that if times got tough
People weren’t gonna buy luxuries and all that stuff
And if you can’t buy what you usually do
Then the people who sell those things lose their jobs too
And then they can’t buy, it’s like a domino effect
So there were hidden changes
Though things seemed perfect
Chorus
Before the Great Depression
People thought they had luck
Thinking up ways they could make a quick buck
They’d buy a stock and sell it
For more than they bought it for
Sure to make a profit, long as the stock would soar
Seemed like such a great idea, everybody wanted in
Even with no money, they started borrowing
They’d ask the bank for a loan to the buy the stock
But could not pay it back when the stock would drop
Lots of people got in debt, had to sell all their shares
When some start selling, everyone gets scared
Millions rushed to sell their stocks in a mass
In the fall of ’29, the stock market crashed
Chorus
October 24, 1929, Black Thursday
One of the country’s darkest times
The market did crash, stocks began to tumble
Many Americans faced financial trouble
Their savings washed away in a matter of days
Left with debt with no money to pay
And our government—no, they didn’t want to panic
They knew there was a problem, but didn’t understand it
President Hoover tried to think of answers
He wanted to improve spending
What were the chances?
Businesses closed, banks dried up like wells
But Hoover thought things
Would take care of themselves
Chorus
Millions of people were poverty stricken
Living within wood shacks and poor conditions
These makeshift camps sprouted up all around
Hoovervilles they often called these towns
A couple years passed, it was 1932
The presidential race began to ask who
Could lift this country up from its depression
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, no question
Made the first and second New Deal
Government projects, building bridges of steel
With the Works Progress Administration
Then World War II brought jobs to the nation
Chorus

A new history of the Great Depression is emerging. One that acknowledges the role that government played in causing and prolonging it, and the constructive role that free enterprise could have played, if it were given the chance. In this video, UCLA economist Lee Ohanian explains how Herbert Hoover, widely misunderstood as a champion of the free market, actually turned what should have just been a recession into a depression due to his mistrust of the market.

What Caused the Great Depression?
The world seems to be crashing on you and there is no place to run. This could be a description of what people felt during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (October 1929) which was also called as the Great Crash, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929. This disaster was the start of the Great Depression which lasted for 12 years and ended at the onset of World War II in 1941.
Stock Market Crash of 1929
October of 1929 saw the collapse of the stock market which obliterated 40 percent of the value of common paper stock. This represented only a single happening as the tragedy continued and more and more people became penniless which rendered them helpless in providing for the needs of their families. Folks were pleading for money and food for their children as they aimlessly roamed the streets. Multitude of businesses was closed and banks were declining. By 1932, an average of one out of four Americans were unemployed. Despair and hopelessness were mirrored on the faces of the people for they saw no hope in sight as all kinds of bad news filled the air.

Just before the advent of the Great Depression, Henry Ford controlled the most important company in the most important industry in the booming American economy. In his first one hundred days in office, in a effort to stem the effects of the
Great Depression, President Roosevelt created many new federal agencies giving
jobs and relief to people and transforming the American landscape with public
works projects. Nowhere was this transformation more apparent than in Mayor
Fiorello La Guardia's New York City. Together Roosevelt and La Guardia expanded
and redefined the role of government in the lives of the American people.

We were the Reagan kids
Our heroes didn't work like our daddies did
They dazzled us with TV through sleepy lids
We followed hulking maniacs to prozac nation
"You can be anything, just get your education"
We were good Christian kids
Went to church on Sunday mornings like mama did
Teenage love made us feel guilty and so we hid
Under those overpasses on summer nights
We'd tear each other's clothes off
And get into fights
Then we roared right through our twenties
Never bargained for a crash
Watched our hollow dreams get buried
Under heaps of plastic trash
Broken promises to children leave indelible impressions
Welcome to the great depression
We were our father's sons
Playing war on weekend days with our plastic guns
Catching up with who we were through the reruns
"Eat your vitamins and say your prayers
You'll become doctors, lawyers and millionaires"
We were misguided girls
Tried to fuck our way through such a distorted world
Confusing love with sex and plastic with pearls
"Get what you can for yourself, leave the rest behind"
It's freedom forever 'til your card gets declined
And we roared right through our twenties
Never bargained for a crash
Watching hollow dreams get buried
Under heaps of plastic trash
Broken promises to children leave indelible impressions
Welcome to the great depression
Did he die for your sins?
Did he leave us for dead?
If you wanted us safe why would you fuck with our heads?
The factory's gone, the loans are foreclosed
But there's some places left that remind me of home
Just give me one place left that reminds me of home
The lifeboat is looking pretty full
If you find some room reach out and give me a pull
The way we learned to live is fading fast
I guess we never bargained for a crash

A Short History of the Great Depression
Not since the Civil War had America suffered so much economically. The stock market collapsed and investors had lost billions. At the depths of the depression, one in four able bodied Americans were unemployed. Banks were failing and people were losing their hard earned savings. The government, like virtually everyone else, was caught off guard and wasn’t able to help the average American recover.

Hi, my name is Faheem Chunara, and I’m from the Culver Palms Family YMCA. In the early 1930s after the Great Depression had ruined the lives of many Americans and forced them into poverty, the minimum wage was introduced to stabilize the economy and help wage earners improve quality of life. But now, with the rising cost of living we must raise the minimum wage. Minimum wage workers earn only 15,0

On this date in 1935, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created.
This organization helped provide economic relief to the citizens of the United States who were suffering through the Great Depression. Established by the Roosevelt administration, by the time it ended in February 1943, it had allocated 11 billion dollars and employed more than 8 million people. Jobs formed by the WPA included a variety of construction, clerical, professional, and arts endeavors. The WPA came at a time of critical need for African-
Americans. The depression, while imposing hardships of people of all races and ethnic backgrounds, struck blacks particularly hard.
The WPA not only hired African-Americans, its projects contributed to their well-being. WPA construction crews built and renovated hospitals, housing projects, schools, parks, playgrounds, and swimming pools in Black communities. Impoverished Black children and adults received free medical and dental care at clinics staffed by Black and White doctors and doctors employed by the WPA. Over 5,000 African-American instructors and supervisors worked on the WPA’s educational programs. They taught a quarter of a million Black adults to read and write, cutting the illiteracy rate by 5 percent.
An editorial in Opportunity Magazine in 1939 credited the WPA in northern cities with giving qualified Blacks their first chance at employment in white-collar positions. Alain Locke, an early chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance, attributed its survival during the 1930’s to the WPA. The WPA also funded Black acting troupes. The Negro Theatre Project staged Walk Together Chillun by Frank Wilson at the Lafayette Theatre through the WPA. The Federal Art Project was one of the divisions of the WPA created under Federal Project One. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had attempted before the Federal Arts Project (FAP) to provide employment for artists on relief, info taken from http://www.aaregistry.org/historic_events/view/works-progress-administration-beginning-many.

READ THIS : There are few well documented cases of economic collapse. One of the best documented cases of collapse or near collapse is the Great Depression, the causes of which are still being debated. "To understand the Great Depression is the Holy Grail of macroeconomics."[4] —Ben Bernanke (1995) Bernanke's comment addresses the difficulty of identifying specific causes when many factors may each have contributed to various extents. Past economic collapses have had political as well as financial causes. Persistent trade deficits, wars, revolutions, famines, depletion of important resources, and government-induced hyperinflation have been listed[by whom?] as causes. In some cases blockades and embargoes caused severe hardships that could be considered economic collapse. In the U.S. the Embargo Act of 1807 forbade foreign trade with warring European nations, causing a severe depression in the heavily international trade-dependent economy, especially in the shipping industry and port cities, ending a great boom.[5] The Union blockade of the Confederate States of America severely damaged the South's plantation owners; however, the South had little economic development. The blockade of Germany during WWI led to starvation of hundreds of thousands of Germans but did not cause economic collapse, at least until the political turmoil and the hyperinflation that followed. For both the Confederacy and Weimar Germany, the cost of the war was worse than the blockade. Many Southern plantation owners had their bank accounts confiscated and also all had to free their slaves without compensation. The Germans had to make war reparations. Following defeat in war, the conquering country or faction may not accept paper currency of the vanquished, and the paper becomes worthless. (This was the situation of the Confederacy.) Government debt obligations, primarily bonds, are often restructured and sometimes become worthless. Therefore, there is a tendency for the public to hold gold and silver during times of war or crisis. Hyperinflation, wars, and revolutions cause hoarding of essentials and a disruption of markets. In some past hyperinflations, workers were paid daily and immediately spent their earnings on essential goods, which they often used for barter. Store shelves were frequently empty. Bank deposits may be involuntarily converted to government bonds or to a new currency of lesser value in foreign exchange. During financial crises and even less severe situations, capital controls are often imposed to restrict or prohibit transferring or personally taking money, securities or other valuables out of a country. To end hyperinflations a new currency is typically issued. The old currency is often not worth exchanging for new. wn.com/My Gold I Have Saved For The Upcoming Economic Collapse (Why You Need To Buy Gold With Your Money )
More stable foreign currencies, silver and gold (usually coins) were held and exchanged in place of local currency. stock stocks market markets gold collapse finance financial bank banks corruption tax taxes save saves saved saving savings money cash loot diamond diamonds law federal reserve bernanke alan greenspan laws buy buys buying bought prepare prepared prepares preparing prepper preppers banking system systems precious metals metal bar bars natural disasters disaster kit kits trade trades trading trader traders cheque cheques bankrupt bankruptcy finances america american canada canadian europe european preparation 2016 economy economies economic crash crashed crashes crashing us usa dollar dollars cent cents silver nickel copper steel stainless get rich millionaire millionaires banker bankers bankster banksters safe safety how to scandal scandals goldman sachs best worst ideas ideas The minting country of precious metal coins tended to be relatively unimportant. Jewelry was also used as a medium of exchange. Alcoholic beverages were also used for barter. Desperate individuals sold valuable possessions to buy essentials or traded them for gold and silver. In the German hyperinflation, stocks held much more of their value than paper currency. Bonds denominated in the inflating currency may lose most or all value. During severe financial crises, sometimes governments close banks. Depositors may be unable to withdraw their money for long periods, as was true in the United States in 1933 under the Emergency Banking Act. Withdrawals may be limited. Minimum wage workers earn only 15,000 dollars a year and that’s not sufficient to help them pay their everyday expenses. Some may argue that raising the wage will result in a rise in unemployment. This is not true. The U.S department of labor contends that “increases in the minimum wage have had little or no negative effect on the employment of minimum-wage workers.” In fact the minimum wage was raised from 9 to 10 dollars in California from 2015 to 2016 and the unemployment rate did not rise. I strongly believe that we need to raise the minimum wage to accommodate for over 3 million Americans who need it to help themselves and their loved ones. Thank you.

Feb 6, 2016. 1pm. Bob Sivertsen was born on Christma day just before the great depression. He fought in Normandy. Was an architect, a tinkerer, a wonderful dedicated husband and a jolly creature of God. Jenny delivers a poignant eulogy for her father. What a life --- full of adventure, energy and fun. The world is a less cheerful place without him. Thank you for your service. Thank you for the joy you brought to this world.

What treasures, what artifacts, what documents will be brought to light after so many decades? Antiques dating from the 19th century to publications from the Great Depression will be brought to light after lying forgotten for generations. This is Part 1 of several parts.

The stock market crash of 1929 ushered in the greatest period of economic malaise in America's history. The Great Depression shaped the atmosphere for a decade; the most prosperous country on earth could not feed its own citizens. But even as Americans were trying to cope with poverty and hunger, the rumblings of a demagogue across the water became louder and louder. This episode examines the Great Depression and the decade of the 1930s, covering events such as the Bonus Army March, movies and radio, the Dust Bowl, FDR and the New Deal and the rise of Hitler in Germany.

Many volumes have been written about the Great Depression of 1929-1941 and its impact on the lives of millions of Americans. Historians, economists and politicians have all combed the wreckage searching for the "black box" that will reveal the cause of the calamity. Sadly, all too many of them decide to abandon their search, finding it easier perhaps to circulate a host of false and harmful conclusions about the events of seven decades ago. Consequently, many people today continue to accept critiques of free-market capitalism that are unjustified and support government policies that are economically destructive.
How bad was the Great Depression? Over the four years from 1929 to 1933, production at the nation's factories, mines and utilities fell by more than half. People's real disposable incomes dropped 28 percent. Stock prices collapsed to one-tenth of their pre-crash height. The number of unemployed Americans rose from 1.6 million in 1929 to 12.8 million in 1933. One of every four workers was out of a job at the Depression's nadir, and ugly rumors of revolt simmered for the first time since the Civil War...

Despite eventually selling nearly three million copies worldwide, The Great Depression lacked the staying power of his previous releases.[citation needed] It was credited by critics[who?] as the most mediocre release in DMX's catalogue. As of 2014 the album has sold 3,289,410 copies in the US alone having being certified 3× Platinum and about 9 million copies worldwide.
A clean edition of The Great Depression was also released.[11] In this version, all profanity is "blanked out", and subject matter related to violence and drug use is lightly censored. There are many inconsistencies in the censorship editing throughout the album. An example of this can be heard in the song, "I'ma Bang"; most mentions of the 'glock' firearm are blanked (to sound like 'g__k'), but the word is left intact at about halfway through the song.
