Death Cap mushrooms found in Canberra
Health Directorate

ACT Chief Health Officer, Dr Paul Kelly has alerted the community that Death Cap mushrooms have been found in several locations in the ACT due to the recent wet weather.

In Canberra, Death Cap mushrooms grow mainly near established oak trees in the wet, warm weather typically observed in late summer and autumn. However this year, due to recent wet weather we’ve been alerted to mushroom sighting earlier than usual.

In light of these sightings, Dr Paul Kelly is reminding the Canberra community that Death Cap mushrooms are extremely poisonous and can easily be confused with other wild mushrooms.

People should not pick or eat any wild mushrooms. All parts of the Death Cap mushroom are poisonous, and eating just one can be fatal. Cooking the Death Cap mushroom does not make it safe to eat.

Cat containment in Casey and areas surrounding Jerrabomberra Wetlands
Closing date: 12 February 2016

The ACT Government is proposing to declare the suburb of Casey in Gungahlin and land adjacent to Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve, including Kingston Foreshore and The Causeway, as cat containment areas.

Under the Domestic Animals Act 2000, an area can be declared a cat containment area where cats pose a serious threat to native wildlife. Currently there are 11 declared cat containment areas in the ACT including Crace, Coombs, Forde, Molonglo and The Fair at Watson. Cat containment will also come into effect in Jacka on 1 January 2017.

Jerrabomberra Wetlands is one of the most valuable wetland habitat areas in the ACT. It is of national and international importance serving as a refuge for migrating bird species and supporting a number of frog, reptile and mammal species. Casey’s close proximity to the Kinlyside Nature Reserve means that native wildlife is at risk of predation by roaming cats.

In recognition that people are already living in these areas the commencement date for the cat containment declaration will be delayed to provide residents time to implement cat containment measures on their premises. For example, the suburb of Jacka was declared a cat containment area in January 2015, however the commencement date has been delayed until 1 January 2017.
