L'Ara Pacis è una delle più alte espressioni dell'arte augustea e insieme un'opera dai profondi rimandi simbolici, che acquistano significato nel quadro del passaggio storico dalla Repubblica al nuovo assetto imperiale. L'altare fu costruito nell'area del Campo Marzio, presso la Flaminia, dal 13 al 9 a.C., per celebrare le imprese di Augusto nelle provincie occidentali dell'Impero. A testimonianza del rapporto diretto con il personaggio, il monumento fu noto come "Ara Pacis Augustae". Con tutta probabilità, l'opera fu eseguita da scultori neoattici attivi a Roma nel I sec. a.C. L'impianto è definito da un recinto marmoreo rettangolare riccamente decorato da bassorilievi con una larghezza approssimativa di 10 metri ed una lunghezza di appena un metro superiore. L'altare centrale, dove si svolgevano i sacrifici rituali, si raggiunge da due aperture poste al centro dei lati più corti del recinto e risulta in posizione rialzata rispetto al perimetro della struttura. Il maggiore interesse artistico è dato dai bassorilievi organizzati in fasce sovrapposte e pannelli che ricoprono interamente le superfici interne ed esterne del recinto ed in parte l'altare centrale. Il fine celebrativo dell'opera è testimoniato direttamente dalla presenza dell'Imperatore Augusto e di Agrippa fra i personaggi rappresentati, ma anche, sul lato occidentale, sia dalle scene dedicate ad Enea, considerato il capostipite della gens Julia alla quale lo stesso Augusto apparteneva, sia da quelle che ricordano l'origine divina di Roma con la lupa che allatta i gemelli Romolo e Remo sotto lo sguardo del padre, il dio Marte. Completano le decorazioni dell'Ara Pacis fregi di carattere naturalistico, con bassorilievi di piante e piccoli animali e la "Tellus", la divinità che rappresenta la personificazione della pace e della prosperità che l'impero di Roma si apprestava a vivere grazie alle imprese di Augusto.

The Ara Pacis Augustae (Latin, "Altar of Augustan Peace"; commonly shortened to Ara Pacis) is an altar to Peace, envisioned as a Roman goddess. It was commissioned by the Roman Senate on 4 July 13 BC to honor the triumphal return from Hispania and Gaul of the Roman emperor Augustus, and was consecrated on 30 January 9 BC by the Senate to celebrate the peace established in the Empire after Augustus's victories. The altar was meant to be a vision of the Roman civil religion. It sought to portray the peace and fertile prosperity enjoyed as a result of the Pax Augusta (Latin, "Augustan peace") brought about by the military supremacy of the Roman empire, and act as a visual reminder of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that was bringing it about.
The Ara Pacis stood within an enclosure elaborately and finely sculpted entirely in gleaming white marble, depicting scenes of traditional Roman piety, in which the Emperor and his family were portrayed in the act of offering sacrifices to the gods. Various figures bring forth cattle to be sacrificed. Some have their togas drawn over their heads, like a hood; this signifies that they are acting in their official capacity as priests. Others wear laurel crowns, traditional symbols of victory. Men, women, and children all approach the gods. Themes of civil peace are linked to themes of the dynastic Julio-Claudian claims, and the importance of religion as a civilizing force, in rites of which some were consciously being revived for the occasion, according to Augustus himself.

L'Ara Pacis è una delle più alte espressioni dell'arte augustea e insieme un'opera dai profondi rimandi simbolici, che acquistano significato nel quadro del passaggio storico dalla Repubblica al nuovo assetto imperiale. L'altare fu costruito nell'area del Campo Marzio, presso la Flaminia, dal 13 al 9 a.C., per celebrare le imprese di Augusto nelle provincie occidentali dell'Impero. A testimonianza del rapporto diretto con il personaggio, il monumento fu noto come "Ara Pacis Augustae". Con tutta probabilità, l'opera fu eseguita da scultori neoattici attivi a Roma nel I sec. a.C. L'impianto è definito da un recinto marmoreo rettangolare riccamente decorato da bassorilievi con una larghezza approssimativa di 10 metri ed una lunghezza di appena un metro superiore. L'altare centrale, dove si svolgevano i sacrifici rituali, si raggiunge da due aperture poste al centro dei lati più corti del recinto e risulta in posizione rialzata rispetto al perimetro della struttura. Il maggiore interesse artistico è dato dai bassorilievi organizzati in fasce sovrapposte e pannelli che ricoprono interamente le superfici interne ed esterne del recinto ed in parte l'altare centrale. Il fine celebrativo dell'opera è testimoniato direttamente dalla presenza dell'Imperatore Augusto e di Agrippa fra i personaggi rappresentati, ma anche, sul lato occidentale, sia dalle scene dedicate ad Enea, considerato il capostipite della gens Julia alla quale lo stesso Augusto apparteneva, sia da quelle che ricordano l'origine divina di Roma con la lupa che allatta i gemelli Romolo e Remo sotto lo sguardo del padre, il dio Marte. Completano le decorazioni dell'Ara Pacis fregi di carattere naturalistico, con bassorilievi di piante e piccoli animali e la "Tellus", la divinità che rappresenta la personificazione della pace e della prosperità che l'impero di Roma si apprestava a vivere grazie alle imprese di Augusto.

The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre (48 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016.
France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. The shorter, faster, and safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and around the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy. It takes between 20 and 30 hours to traverse the canal.
During construction, ownership of the territory that is now the Panama Canal was first Colombian, then French, and then American. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999, and is now managed and operated by the Panama Canal Authority, a Panamanian government agency.
Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, the latter measuring a total of 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2008, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal; the largest ships that can transit the canal today are called Panamax. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
