But one former officer has taken "asset stripping" to new lengths.
Arkady Lapunov works as dancer in a Moscow nightclub where keeping your kit in good condition takes on a whole new meaning.
They call it "The Full Boris"...

RUSSIA: COMMUNIST PARTY PROFILE
Russian/Eng/Nat
The first round of Russia's presidential election has left two front-runners, Boris Yeltsin and Gennady Zyuganov.
Yeltsin's campaign team has been trying to scare Russians with visions of the Communist past -- repression and bread queues.
But the Communists are no longer the party of Lenin and Stalin -- they have courted Western business and Zyuganov even declared Jesus Ch

Russian President Boris Yeltsin fired two of his closest aides on Thursday (20/6) amid charges that they were using their positions to exert undue influence on the Russian presidential election. The dismissals of Yeltsin's personal bodyguard and Kremlin security chief Alexander Korzhakov and Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Mikhail Barsukov has thrust the two shadowy figures
into the spotlight. Korzhakov, who was virtually always by Yeltsin's side, was a KGB general and served as Yeltsin's security chief from the beginning of Yeltsin's time in Moscow. Barsukov made his name as a commander of the elite Alpha Force which protected Yeltsin and attacked the parliament building
during the attempted coup of 1993. Yeltsin named him to head the Security Service, successor to the KGB, last year.

Russian/Nat
It's no secret that the Russian army is in crisis. Corruption and theft are just a few of the problems eating away at the former military monster.
But one former officer has taken "asset stripping" to new lengths.
Arkady Lapunov works as dancer in a Moscow nightclub where keeping your kit in good condition takes on a whole new meaning.
They call it "The Full Boris"...
At one of Moscow's top night spots, the 'Golden Boys' dance group put on a special show for the ladies.
Even under Soviet rule, Moscow had strip clubs.
But male nudity was outlawed and punishable by a spell in prison.
A man's place was in the factory or as a soldier in the Red Army.
Times have changed.
25-year-old Arkady Lapunov used to be a platoon commander at an army base outside the Russian capital.
Tired of the regimentation of army life, he quit the parade ground for strutting his stuff at with the 'Golden Boys'.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"The army has no future. The Russian army has fallen apart and is unlikely to stand on its feet again until soldiers are professionally recruited and money is put into it. The question is when that'll be."
SUPER CAPTION: Arkady Lapunov, Stripper and former Russian army officer
The once mighty Red Army is now in tatters as reform programmes have faltered one after another.
Many conscripts spend their two-year term working on building sites or harvesting potatoes and cabbages. They're often the lucky ones.
The unlucky are sent to conflict zones or remote Far Eastern border posts.
Arkady has no regrets about his change of career.
The pay's better - around 25 U-S dollars a show instead of his officer's monthly wage of 75 (U-S Dollars).
And the basic training, he says, is a lot more fun.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"Any man likes it when a woman is turned on by him. When you can turn lots of them on... well, I don't think I need to explain any more....!"
SUPER CAPTION: Arkady Lapunov, Stripper and former Russian army officer
With up to three shows a night to perform, it's not an easy life.
But the company's better, and the pay is good.
And if your uniform doesn't fit properly, well, it really doesn't matter.
Arkady might stop just short of going the "full monty," but then his customers are allowed a little closer than might be expected for a stage performer.
As Arkady says, there's more than one way to serve your country.

Russian/Eng/Nat
The first round of Russia's presidential election has left two front-runners, Boris Yeltsin and Gennady Zyuganov.
Yeltsin's campaign team has been trying to scare Russians with visions of the Communist past -- repression and bread queues.
But the Communists are no longer the party of Lenin and Stalin -- they have courted Western business and Zyuganov even declared Jesus Christ to be the world's first Communist.
So what exactly does it mean to be a Communist in today's Russia?
Gennady Zyuganov is many men to many people.
A hard-line communist to the elderly that come to his rallies throughout Russia demanding higher pensions.
An ardent nationalist to the far right who long for a mighty Russia once again.
And a smooth social democrat to nervous Western business interests in Moscow.
The Communist Party of Russia today is not what it was under the Soviet Union.
A variety of political groups are indeed making strange bed-fellows in Lenin's party.
Communist, monarchist and even Christian Communists have found a home in a party whose only common platform is a desire for a strong central government that will again make Russia mighty -- and feared.
Alexei Podberyozkin heads a patriotic organization called Spiritual Inheritance, though not Communist itself, it supports Zyuganov.
Poberyozkin thinks the Communist party has fundamentally changed.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It is an absolutely different party. Certainly it is Communist by name, but it has made a lot of steps toward democracy, towards accepting reality and so on and so forth. It's not the same Communist party it was in the seventies or in the fifties.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexei Podberyozkin, Head of Spiritual Inheritance
The Communist Party has become a political bloc for opposition to Yeltsin.
The former Chief Editor of the Communist daily Pravda gives Zyuganov the credit for stitching them together.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think it did really take a great deal of effort on Zyuganov's part to unite these very divergent trends in the opposition. What they are primarily united by is their hatred of the Yeltsin regime, of Yeltsin's government.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Linnik, Former Chief Editor of Pravda
One such group under the Communist umbrella is the extreme left organisation Labour Russia, headed by Viktor Anpilov.
Anpilov's brand of Communism is even too far left for Zyuganov and their union before the elections is more a marriage of convenience.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Great names are with us! Lenin is with us! Stalin is with us! Russia is with us. Together we shall win.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Anpilov, Head of Labour Russia
Zyuganov needs the fiery Anpilov who regularly outshines him at rallies.
Even Zyuganov's supporters can't agree upon where he really stands politically.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Anpilov is a revolutionary Che Gueverra style. Whereas Zyuganov is probably a Communist Western European style.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Linnik, Former Chief Editor of Pravda
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I am absolutely sure that Zyuganov and the Communist party is not social-democratic, because that is simplification. It is a Russian Communist party with some ideas of social-democrats maybe, but it is a much more difficult combination. It is a synthesis of different ideas.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexei Podberyozkin, Head of Spiritual Inheritance
The truth is that Zyuganov and the Communist Party today is probably closer to European-style Social Democrats than to Stalin.
Their greatest concerns are more economic -- timely payment of wages to workers and higher pensions for the elderly -- than hope that they'll actually rebuild the Soviet Union.

Russia is a country full of adventure, culture and vast distances. A continent, a multi-ethnic country and a vast land unites both Europe and Asia. Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe in which both Tsar rule and soviet communism gave the city its present appearance. The Kremlin is located on a forty metre high hill above the Moskva River and beyond its protective walls are numerous buildings, palaces, towers, squares and churches. The city’s history began with the construction of the Kremlin which lay at the very heart of the city and was for centuries Russia’s spiritual and political centre. A fascinating cruise travels across numerous rivers, canals and lakes within the heart of the former Tsar’s realm, past monasteries and timber built churches. In Uglič the Dimitrijvskaija Church is crowned with blue, onion-shaped domes that are adorned with stars. The red colour of the church is a symbol of bloodshed and the incidents that once occurred at this place of death gave rise to a time of confusion. St. Petersburg, known also as the Venice Of The North, contains splendid buildings such as the Winter Palace and the Eremitage. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for the foundation of Isaaks Cathedral that can accommodate a congregation of fourteen thousand. In Port Baikal is the modern Circum-Baikal train that takes a full day to travel around Lake Baikal and is one of the most difficult sections of the Trans-Siberian Railroad that travels from Moscow to as far as Vladivostok. Russia is huge and its nature, culture, immense contrast and dramatic history have formed the fascinating and colourful Russian soul.

Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.
What is your favorite part of Moscow?

St. Petersburg is often described as the most Westernized city of Russia, as well as its cultural capital. It is the northernmost city in the world to have a population of over one million. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most important places to visit in St. Petersburg are: Church of the Savior on Blood (one of the greatest landmarks of St. Petersburg, its striking facade leaves a memorable impression on visitors that come from around the world), St. Isaac's Cathedral (one of Russia's largest churches. Constructed in the 19th century, a French-born architect created this remarkable structure), Peterhof Palace (Peter the Great built this incredibly luxurious imperial palace. Situated by the gulf of Finland, it was built in the early 18th century), Hermitage and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important St. Petersburg travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

St Petersburg lies around 400 miles to the Northwest of Moscow. Nestled on the Neva River, it spreads out from its banks and across a series of islands that lie within the river delta.
With a wealth of extravagant palaces, breathtaking cathedrals and magnificent gardens, St Petersburg is truly Russia’s Imperial city.
Carved out of swampland in the early 18th century by Csar Peter the Great, St Petersberg has been gilded by generations of Russian royalty.
Over the centuries, this dynasty sought to create a city to rival the greatest cities of Europe, and, as you step onto the cobblestone streets here, you’ll discover they succeeded.
Most visitors start their adventures right in the heart of historic St Petersburg. Palace Square is dominated by the Alexander Column and is home to the Winter Palace.
This monumental palace is a legacy of Catherine the Great and was designed to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. Today it houses the State Hermitage Museum which is one of the world’s oldest and largest museums.
Experience some of the country’s most extravagant architecture by strolling along Nevsky Prospect, the city’s main avenue.
Visit the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, with its extraordinary mosaics,… and Kazan Cathedral, another architectural gem.
Further along the river is St Isaac’s cathedral, whose gold plated dome has been glittering under Russia’s sun for more than 100 years.
As the sun sets, take a canal cruise to discover the romance of St Petersburg at night. Pass through a network of draw-bridges on a journey that shows the true scale of Peter the Great’s vision.
Romantic, opulent and spectacular, St Petersburg is a glittering testiment to Russia’s royal history and a celebration of the power of one man’s dream.

Travel video about destination Moskva in Russia.
Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe. Both Tsar rule and soviet communism gave the city its present appearance. It has witnessed much change and has become a prosperous city and one of contrast and the superlative, of millionaires and also the very poor. Vasiliya Blazhennovo Khram, Basilius Cathedral, is one of the main landmarks of the Russian metropolis and was built at the command of Moscow sovereign, Ivan The Fourth, also known as Ivan The Terrible, Russia’s first Tsar. The cathedral is representative of Moscow’s architecture with red brick monuments and an accumulation of onion-shaped towers. The Kremlin extends beyond a red wall and various towers that date back to the fifteenth century. Since time immemorial it has been the seat of both tsars and bishops and in front of its walls is Red Square that was once used as a marketplace and also a place of execution. Here the death penalty was declared and immediately carried out. Arbatskaya is a city district west of the Kremlin. In the fifteenth century, the craftsmen and servants of the Tsar lived there and then followed artists, intellectuals and aristocrats. In 1935 the Metro was inaugurated and had thirteen stations. Today there are more than a hundred located along two hundred and sixty kilometres of rail, used by millions each and every day. The Moscow Underground is fast, cheap and quite splendid. Its stations are veritable works of art! When the Tsar’s empire vanished, the realm of the Communist rulers was torn apart. But the mega metropolis of Moscow managed to survive. A restless and powerful city of fantastic culture and truly dramatic history.

Take a tour of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russian Federation -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
It looks more like a cluster of brightly colored hot air balloons than a cathedral.
This is St. Basil's, or the "Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin By the Moat".
This flamboyantly shaped and colored building is one of Russia's most important churches.
The cathedral was started in 1555 as eight chapels built around a larger ninth.
There have been several theories about the design of St. Basil's, but no certain answers.
The cathedral has had several additions, and the whole church narrowly escaped destruction under Stalin.
St. Basil's is no longer a church, it now operates as a museum.

Take a tour of Solovetsky Monastery in Solovki, Russia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Located on the Solovetsky Islands, a small archipelago in Solovki, Russia, is the Solovetsky Monastery.
The site was founded by two monks in the 1400s and after a generous land donation the monastery was substantially expanded.
The secluded location of the islands was a perfect stronghold throughout the Livonian, Crimian and Russian Civil Wars.
The surrounding walls are four to six meters in thickness and encompass the village where the monastery is located.
A source of great pride for the monks inhabiting the monastery were the expansive manicured grounds and gardens.
Solovetsky Monastery and village now cover all the Solovetsky Islands and are open for visitors and pilgrims.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: BORIS YELTSIN ENDS LOW PROFILE
English/Nat

STORYLINE
Five candidates are vying to win Sunday's presidential elections in Russia, but only one is thought to have a real chance of winning - current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
But what of the other four - who are they and what alternative can they present in a country where opposition to Putin is already being cast by the regime as tantamount to a betrayal of the country?
Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov hopes to capitalise on the undercurrent of dissatisfaction across all layers of society and across the rural villages of Russia.
The Communist Party still has a sizable following, especially amongst the old, for whom voting for the Communists is an old habit.
Sergei Mironov is the leader of the centre-left A Just Russia party.

Russian President Boris Yeltsin made a series of appearances on Friday after weeks of maintaining low profile during the Chechnya crisis.
He looked cheerful as he faced the media in Moscow, but many Russians doubt that he can survive as his country's leader for much longer.
A relaxed and confident Boris Yeltsin appeared three times before the cameras in the Kremlin (Moscow) today.
With the Russian flag now flying over key parts of Grozny, he smiled as he awarded state prizes to prominent public figures as part of a public relations blitz.
But the war in Chechnya has dealt a blow to Boris Yeltsin's prestige both at home and abroad.
Within Russia his decision to invade the breakaway republic has deprived him of significant public and political support.
SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH)
"This task was implemented in the worst possible way, unfortunately. What should be done as an anti-terrorist operation specifically targeted against Dudayev and his group turned out to be a full-scale military operation against the majority of Chechen people."
CAPTION: Sergei Stankevich, Former Yeltsin Advisor.
In recent weeks Yeltsin has sat inside the Kremlin as people took to the streets outside to protest against the war.
Yeltsin appears to be relying more and more on his Security Council and a growing number of people are comparing this to the old Soviet politburo.
It was this inner circle who convinced the President that the war would take only two days and he may well have to sacrifice some of them to regain his credibility
SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH)
"He was misinformed and probably betrayed by some of his close advisors. If he is ready to sacrifice some of the key figures in his cabinet, if he is ready to change guard, so to
speak, then there is a chance that he might regain some of his popularity."
SUPER CAPTION: Andrei Kortunov, Political Analyst USA-Canada Institute.
Some people have started to speak of Boris Yeltsin's presidency in the past tense.
Possible replacements include Prime Minister Chernomyrdin and speaker of Parliament Rybkin.
Both are moderate, compromise-minded politicians capable of holding a coalition together.
SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH)
"Yeltsin was a real hero of the moment and he has done tremendous job and contributed a lot to Russian modern history. But now is another era."
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Stankevich, Former Yeltsin Advisor.
Boris Yeltsin is fighting for his political life and his future could be decided as much in the Kremlin as on the battlefields of Chechnya.

Russian/Nat
Sunday's election in Russia is largely being seen as a divide between young and old - the future and the past.
Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov is banking on a strong turn-out from older people and President Yeltsin is looking to the young to keep him in power.
Here A-P-T-V profiles a communist veteran and a doctor - both whose standard of living has fallen sharply under Yeltsin. The only difference is the former has voted Communist and the other for Yeltsin. Since Marina Petrenko voted for Boris Yeltsin five years ago, her life has undergone many changes - most for the worse.
Marina has seen her salary and living standards plummet as inflation spiralled out of control. With her husband out of work, survival has been her only thought.
But unlike millions of other Russians in her position, Marina does not want a return to the past. She voted again for Boris Yeltsin on Sunday.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Zyuganov is a return to the past, Yeltsin means the future."
SUPER CAPTION: Marina Petrenko, Doctor
Marina is the head of the diagnostic department at one of Moscow's top neurological clinics.
Highly qualified, she used to enjoy all the benefits of one of the most valued of Soviet professions.
But Russia's healthcare system has all but collapsed leaving Marina lucky if she takes home 200 U-S dollars a month.
She became the family's only breadwinner last year when her husband was made redundant. Marina was forced to take a job as a
cleaner to make ends meet.
She says many other doctors at her clinic have also been forced to
take part-time jobs.
The little extra money she earns cleaning will help Marina finance her daughter's scholarship to an American college.
But Marina despairs of those who have lost faith with Boris Yeltsin. She expects little for herself and knows that perhaps only her daughter's generation will benefit from the present reforms.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"If people are expecting drastic changes in the course of one or
five years, I think that's stupid. It's very difficult to turn back that which went in the opposite direction for so long."
SUPER CAPTION: Marina Petrenko, doctor
Until five years ago Marina was a member of the Communist Party.
For her that is now all in the past. She is prepared to put up with all the hardships that the next few years may bring if it means a better future for her daughter.
And she is convinced it's a future only Boris Yeltsin can bring.
At the opposite end of the political spectrum, 68-year-old war veteran Zinaida Ivanovna set off on Sunday to do battle once again.
Just like fifty years ago, she believes she is fighting for the future of Russia. Today the ballot boxes are her frontline.
Zinaida is one of the nation's communist faithful, one of those described in news reports and opinion surveys as the party's "hardline" electorate.
She is one of the millions of angry pensioners, left behind by Russia's headlong plunge into market economics, on whom Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov is counting in today's presidential election.
Zinaida's vote is guaranteed.
At 13 years of age Zinaida joined the Red Army, fighting as a sniper and taking part in the liberation of her village outside Leningrad. Today her only ammunition is her vote.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
If our bourgeoise, if our millionaires attack us again with tanks I will defend myself but we don't have tanks, I'm a sniper and I don't have a gun to shoot with. I will use only my vote to defend my great motherland.
SUPER CAPTION: Zinaida Ivanovna, war veteran and pensioner
For the elderly like Zinaida, it is too late to adjust to the new rules of the game. Commerce is for the younger generation.

Russian/Nat
The former Russian army general - Alexander Lebed - looks set to play the role of kingmaker between now and the second round of the country's presidential elections.
His campaign for the first round gave him a comfortable third place with a healthy 15 per cent of the vote.
Now the two leading candidates are beating a path to his door to get a share of his votes in next month's runoff.
General Alexander Lebed was in a confident mood as he arrived to vote, Sunday.
He came a surprisingly comfortable third in the presidential elections, giving him a vital kingmaking role in the final round between the two front-runners next month.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"If we are to believe the figures - and we have to - then about 16 million people have put their faith in me. One thing is left - confirm their expectations. This I will do."
SUPERCAPTION: Alexander Lebed, candidate
The communist candidate - Gennady Zyuganov - appears to be on the point of offering Lebed the post of Prime Minister should he win the final round.
And President Boris Yeltsin is reported to have met him in the Kremlin Monday to offer the post of deputy Prime Minister, with special responsibility for law and order.
Pavel Felgenhauer, Military Affairs Correspondent for the publication Sevodnya, believes Lebed will choose Yeltsin's camp.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Lebed most likely would not go with Zyuganov. His politics are towards Yeltsin and I think he could settle for something below Prime Minister...being first deputy prime minister responsible for reform of the army and the fight against corruption and law and order."
SUPERCAPTION: Pavel Felgenhauer, Military Affairs Correspondent for Sevodnya magazine
As the man who ended a blood-thirsty conflict in an ex-Soviet flashpoint, Transdniestria, Lebed added to his already glowing military reputation won in Afghanistan.
His support of the ordinary conscript soldier - a rarity in Russia - made him a hero to the troops. The same no-nonsense approach to politics evidently struck a chord with many voters.
At their barracks on Monday, conscripts were going through their paces.
Lebed's strong performance was greeted with quiet satisfaction.
Some even thought that he might even have got more votes.
VOXPOP: (Russian)
I think he would support the army. I'm sure he would have got a lot more votes, only most of his supporters thought he wouldn't get many and gave their votes to other candidates. He's liked by a lot of us.
SUPERCAPTION: Soldier
VOXPOP: (Russian)
If he had been defence minister things would be a whole lot better in the army. And the war in Chechnya would have been a different story.
SUPERCAPTION: Soldier
With the focus firmly on Lebed, it's not just the press who are beating a path to his door.
The General is likely to call the shots whether he supports Yeltsin or Zyuganov.

Russian ultra-nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky is the
eternal "bad boy" of Russian politics.
After years of low-level backroom intrigue, Zhirinovsky finally
came to prominence on the national stage five years ago and has
since become notorious for his flamboyance and outrageous stunts
His inflammatory nationalist declarations have led Western
observers and moderates in Moscow to see him as a dangerous
destabilising influence in Russian politics.
His inaptly named Liberal Democratic Party plays on the passions
of those Russians who mourn the country's loss of status as one of
the world's two great superpowers.
In his election campaign, Zhirinovsky has promoted the notion of a
"great Russia" surrounded by imperialists and spies.
Zhirinovsky's party claimed around 25 percent of the popular vote
in the first free parliamentary elections in 1993.
His faction subsequently lost ground to the Communists, although
it retained around 11 per cent of the vote in the last
parliamentary polls.
Zhirinovsky is not considered a front-runner in the presidential
race, though he has always portrayed himself as the only
alternative to the incumbent president Boris Yeltsin and his main
rival, the communist leader Gennady Zyuganov.

STORYINE:
The main pro-Kremlin party is holding a congress on Monday to nominate President Vladimir Putin's choice as his successor, to run in the March 2 presidential election.
Dmitry Medvedev, a first deputy prime minister endorsed by Putin a week ago, is to be formally nominated for the race by the United Russia party.
Putin's support and the Kremlin's overwhelming control of national television appear to make Medvedev's victory a foregone conclusion.
But the key question of what role Putin will take after the vote remains unanswered.
Putin, who is required by term limits to step down in May, has said he would continue to wield significant influence over Russia's politics, but he has not specified what position he might take.
He has said he might take the prime minister's job, and Medvedev pleaded with him to do that immediately after Putin tapped him as the favoured successor.
Many said, however, that Putin would be unlikely to take the job, which would make him subordinate to the president, and alleged that instead he would continue calling the shots as a "national leader" of unspecified authority.
Some said Putin could retain control by becoming leader of United Russia, which won a crushing majority in December 2 parliamentary elections - reproducing the Soviet model in which real power belonged to the Communist Party chief.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who died in Moscow on Sunday night (04 August 2008), was the first person to reveal to the world the full horrors of Stalin's system of forced labour camps - known as the Gulag.
His trilogy 'The Gulag Archipelago' left readers shocked by the savagery of the Soviet state under the dictatorship of Josef Stalin.
More than 400,000 prisoners made the trip to the islands. Few made the return trip home.

LEAD IN
Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who died in Moscow on Sunday night (04 August 2008), was the first person to reveal to the world the full horrors of Stalin's system of forced labour camps - known as the Gulag.
His trilogy 'The Gulag Archipelago' left readers shocked by the savagery of the Soviet state under the dictatorship of Josef Stalin.
More than 400,000 prisoners made the trip to the islands. Few made the return trip home.
STORYLINE:
And with the Gulag came torture.

Italian guitarist, with more than 40,000 fans around the world (http://www.Facebook.com/FlavioSalaFans) and millions of views on Youtube (http://www.Youtube.com/Guitargurugu), Flavio Sala is considered the new star of the guitar, acclaimed by critics and audiences worldwide for his incredible instrumental technique, combined with extraordinary sensitivity and musical creativity.
---------------------------------------------------------
My name is Flavio Sala and I am a guitarist. I was born in Bojano (Italy) on May 9, 1983. When I was seven year old, my father put a guitar in my hands and taught me the first two or three chords. Then I learnt copying my brothers. I fell in love with guitar and really felt like becoming a professional performer, without even know what that meant. I studied at the Conservatory with Pasqualino Garzia and at the "Accademia Musicale Chigiana" with Oscar Ghiglia. Till the age of fourteen I believed that classical music was the best, but after playing and playing it, I started to understand that I could not keep playing the same things during all my life. It was when I discovered Paco de Lucia, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Jaco Pastorius and many others that I started to change and open my mind: since that moment I have been dreaming to become an eclectic artist, I just want to play on my guitar the music I love. I got really fascinated with flamenco, jazz, latin jazz but later also pop, rock and salsa artists/singers: “Why do they look so comfortable, happy enjoying their music and playing, and classical musicians always look like suffering on the stage all the time?” That used to happen also to me and I wanted to cut it down, absolutely!

The mainstream media said the mid-term election would be close, and it turned into a blowout. Now, all the blocking that outgoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was doing for President Obama is going to be unblocked, and expect many pieces of legislation to land on the President’s desk. Yes, the President can veto legislation, but then he will be known as the President of “no.”
It’s been revealed President Obama secretly wrote a letter to the Supreme Leader of Iran asking for his help in fighting the Islamic State. I thought Iran was on the State Department terror list. I thought the U.S. and other nations were trying to get Iran to curtail its nuclear program. I thought we were asking Sunnis to overthrow Assad in Syria that Iran (Shia Muslim) is helping to stay in power. Confused? So am I.
Financial war is raging between the West and Russia. The ruble is way down in value. The Russians are going to make the use of dollars illegal and force people to close dollar denominated accounts. There are sanctions from Europe and the U.S. on Russia and vice versa. Now, we hear of a cyber-threat from Homeland Security called “Black Energy” that can shut things like nuclear power plants down.
There is another investigation into JP Morgan, this time, over its foreign exchange business. I am not optimistic of getting any convictions. The government hasn’t convicted a single high profile banker for massive and obvious crime. That said, there is a new star witness against JP Morgan, and Matt Tiabbi of Rolling Stone lays out the case in a story titled “The $9 Billion Witness: Meet JPMorgan Chase’s Worst Nightmare.
