Labor rights or workers' rights are a group of legal rights and claimed human rights having to do with labor relations between workers and their employers, usually obtained under labor and employment law. In general, these rights' debates have to do with negotiating workers' pay, benefits, and safe working conditions. One of the most central of these rights is the right to unionize. Unions take advantage of collective bargaining and industrial action to increase their members' wages and otherwise change their working situation. Labor rights can also take in the form of worker's control and worker's self management in which workers have a democratic voice in decision and policy making. The labor movement initially focused on this "right to unionize", but attention has shifted elsewhere.
Critics of the labor rights movement claim that regulation promoted by labor rights activists may limit opportunities for work. In the United States, critics objected to unions establishing closed shops, situations where employers could only hire union members. The Taft–Hartley Act banned the closed shop but allowed the less restrictive union shop. Taft–Hartley also allowed states to pass right-to-work laws, which require an open shop where a worker's employment is not affected by his or her union membership. Labor counters that the open shop leads to a free rider problem.
Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) was an American economist who received the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his research on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory and the complexity of stabilization policy. With George Stigler and others, Friedman was among the intellectual leaders of the second generation of Chicago price theory, a methodological movement at the University of Chicago's Department of Economics, Law School, and Graduate School of Business from the 1940s onward. Several students and young professors that were recruited or mentored by Friedman at Chicago went on to become leading economists; they include Gary Becker, Robert Fogel, and Robert Lucas, Jr..
Friedman's challenges to what he later called "naive Keynesian" theory began with his 1950s reinterpretation of the consumption function. In the 1960s, he became the main advocate opposing Keynesian government policies, and described his approach (along with mainstream economics) as using "Keynesian language and apparatus" yet rejecting its "initial" conclusions. He theorized that there existed a "natural" rate of unemployment, and argued that employment above this rate would cause inflation to accelerate. He argued that the Phillips curve was, in the long run, vertical at the "natural rate" and predicted what would come to be known as stagflation. Friedman promoted an alternative macroeconomic viewpoint known as "monetarism", and argued that a steady, small expansion of the money supply was the preferred policy. His ideas concerning monetary policy, taxation, privatization and deregulation influenced government policies, especially during the 1980s. His monetary theory influenced the Federal Reserve's response to the global financial crisis of 2007–08.
Nearly every company in America with more than a handful of employees has a poster hanging somewhere in the building extolling the virtues of their workers compensation policy. But these policies aren’t necessarily the result of companies trying to do right by their employees – they are mandated by law in most instances. And just like every law out there, corporations are using their money and influence to weaken these worker protections. http://www.faruqilaw.com (877) 247-4292 Employment attorney Adam Gonnelli discusses how California employers must meet certain requirements for each employee they retain for their business. Every employee deserves at least the minimum wage per hour as set forth by the federal government. It may surprise you that the minimum wage in California is actually higher than that required by the government. While most of the country is set at $7.25 an hour for employees, the hourly rate in California is $8.00 an hour. In some areas of California, it's even higher. Along with minimum wage requirements, an employer must pay their workers overtime based on a week of more than 40 hours worked. This is also required across the country. And again, in California, overtime is gained not only when you re...

You are doing it all wrong! Since when was disrupting traffic (the eastern stub of ryding ave, gourlay cres, the western part of ethel ave, gunns road at st. clair ave west, and glen scarlett road), blocking the public sidewalks (people have to push past you or walk on the road into traffic, to get around if you WON'T move) or blocking access to/from the workplaces (the meat-packers firms) called standing up for animal's rights? Since when did vilifying people (workers), or calling them "murderers" or "animal abusers" or "animal killers" become part of animal rights? How do you possibly make such claims on the individuals who work there? You seem to forget that they have a family to raise, pet(s) to take care of and feed too. This puts your "cause" to shame in part. For the record, I am...
Over 50 million people – overwhelmingly women and girls – are employed in private homes as domestic workers. They are often excluded from national labor laws, and endure long hours of work with no rest, low pay, forced labor, and physical and sexual abuse. In this video, Nisha Varia describes how domestic workers and their allies organized to win a global treaty to protect their rights. A particular focus is the use of research to document abuses and to identify avenues for advocacy.
(English subtitles available soon) Led by MEPs from the Socialists and Democrats Group, the European Parliament this week called for a strategy to reindustrialise Europe following the brutal announcements on the closure of the Caterpillar plant in Belgium and the Alstom site in France. The resolution was adopted in the Parliament in Strasbourg by a large majority – 472 votes for, 103 against and 99 abstentions – and notably it supports penalties against companies who make redundancies based on the stock market. MEPs also want member states to take inspiration from the 'Florange law' in France which means multinational companies who wish to close a site must seek a new buyer. The president of the S&D; Group, Gianni Pittella MEP, welcomed the result of the vote: "We can no longer accept ...
Today (5 October) the European Parliament will vote on a resolution on the situation of Andy Hall, the International Affairs Advisor for migrant workers rights. The resolution urges the EU to continue to monitor the human rights situation in Thailand. However, is also asks EU member states to ensure its companies operating in Thailand respect international standards, in particular with regard for workers rights.
