British songwriter Lee Horrocks offers up the kind of superlatives that seem to be following Yohanna wherever she goes these days. The 18 year old singer has been a multi-platinum star in her native Iceland since the age of nine, but in the last few years some of the biggest names in music have lined up to work with her. What do they see in the young singer? Horrocks cuts right to the chase:
„Its all about the voice. Its very pure, very original. Shes a star.
But maybe its more than that. How does a girl from a tiny island nation catch the attention of some of the biggest names in music, both in America and Europe?
That is, of course, the million dollar question, although it shouldnt be surprising that the land of Björk and Sigur Rós has produced yet another unique talent. Certainly it starts with the voice and that amazing purity of sound. Maria Björk is a well-known performer in Iceland and runs its premier singers school:
„Yohanna has an amazing voice; you can hear that immediately. But what sets her apart as a singer, and especially one so young, is the complete control she has.
But along with the sound is an intangible magic not often seen in someone so young. Onstage, she blooms, seemingly inhabited by a soul much older than her own. Veteran recording engineer Thomas Yezzi, whos been mixing the new cd, has his own take on the transformation:

Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir
Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir (born 16 October 1990), known outside of Iceland as Yohanna, is an Icelandic singer who was chosen to represent her nation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, Russia, with the song "Is It True?", earning second place.
Background and career
Yohanna was raised in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, and started performing on stage at the age of nine after participating in singing classes. Her first album, titled Jóhanna Guðrún 9 was released in 2000 and contained mostly international pop hits that had been translated into the Icelandic language. "Torn", "Genie in a Bottle", and "I'll Be There" are among the songs that Yohanna covered. She released one more album in addition to a Christmas album before stepping out of the spotlight. She also worked in musicals.
2008-10: Butterflies and Elvis and Eurovision Song Contest
Yohanna's album Butterflies and Elvis marked her return to the spotlight in 2008. The album was released in Iceland and Sweden with her first single to be "I Miss You". Since Eurovision, Yohanna has performed in countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Turkey. On 12 May 2009, Yohanna qualified for the Eurovision final after winning first place in the first semi-final. For the final in Moscow, she was joined on stage by backing-vocalists Friðrik Ómar, Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir, and Hera Björk. She came in second place behind Norway, with 218 points. Her debut song, "Is It True?" went on to become a top download on iTunes and a hit in several countries. Yohanna sang The Winner Takes It All at the 2010 Icelandic Eurovision Selection Final and also was Iceland's spokesperson at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 revealing the results of the Icelandic voting.

Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision Song Contest (French: Concours Eurovision de la chanson), often shortened to ESC or Eurovision, is the longest-running annual TV song competition, held, primarily, among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 1956. The competition was based upon the existing Sanremo Music Festival held in Italy.
Each participating country submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio and then casts votes for the other countries' songs to determine the most popular song in the competition. The contest has been broadcast every year for sixty years, since its inauguration in 1956, and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally. Eurovision has also been broadcast outside Europe to several countries that do not compete, such as the USA and China. An exception was made in 2015, when Australia was allowed to compete as a guest entrant as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the event. In November 2015, the EBU announced that Australia would return in 2016. Since 2000, the contest has also been broadcast over the Internet, via the Eurovision website.

British songwriter Lee Horrocks offers up the kind of superlatives that seem to be following Yohanna wherever she goes these days. The 18 year old singer has been a multi-platinum star in her native Iceland since the age of nine, but in the last few years some of the biggest names in music have lined up to work with her. What do they see in the young singer? Horrocks cuts right to the chase:
„Its all about the voice. Its very pure, very original. Shes a star.
But maybe its more than that. How does a girl from a tiny island nation catch the attention of some of the biggest names in music, both in America and Europe?
That is, of course, the million dollar question, although it shouldnt be surprising that the land of Björk and Sigur Rós has produced yet another unique talent. Certainly it starts with the voice and that amazing purity of sound. Maria Björk is a well-known performer in Iceland and runs its premier singers school:
„Yohanna has an amazing voice; you can hear that immediately. But what sets her apart as a singer, and especially one so young, is the complete control she has.
But along with the sound is an intangible magic not often seen in someone so young. Onstage, she blooms, seemingly inhabited by a soul much older than her own. Veteran recording engineer Thomas Yezzi, whos been mixing the new cd, has his own take on the transformation:
„Shes a 17 year old, white Icelandic girl with the soul of a 50 year old black woman. Shes really amazing.
Its something everybody seems to be saying: Amazing. Pure. Unique. As with all great artists, it may be impossible to understand the why. And in the end, all that matters is the voice. That voice. Listen for a few seconds, and you realize, as Maria says:

Yohanna and Davíð perform live "Is It True?". This beautiful gig took place at March 21, 2012 in the "Scene U", Kongsvinger, Norway. The sound quality of the source is unfortunately not perfect, but nevertheless it's an example of Yohannas extraordinary abilities live on stage. Yes, it ist true: Even without a lot of studio equipment, just with her angelic voice - Yohanna is simply unbeatable ... :) With this dreamlike ballad Yohanna reached 218 points and thus an outstanding 2nd place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow. It's the biggest success for her native Iceland in history of this event. Minning: Jóhannes Bogason frá Brúarfossi Fæddur 19. desember 1892 Dáinn 1. janúar 1991 Á fyrsta degi hins nýja árs lést vinur minn og fyrrverandi ná granni, Jóhannes Bogason, bóndi, Brúarfossi. Andlát hans kom ekki á óvart, hann var maður orðinn háaldraður og heilsuveikur.
Jóhannes fæddist 19. des. 1892. Foreldrar hans voru Bogi Helgason, bóndi, Brúarfossi, og kona hans, Guðbjörg Jóhannesdóttir. Jóhannes var næstyngstur fjögurra barna þeirra hjóna, en þau voru Helgi, Teitur, Jóhannes og Soffía. Öll eru þau systkinin nú látin.
Jóhannes ólst upp á Brúarfossi og vandist snemma allri venjulegri sveitavinnu. Hann var alla tíð sérstaklega viljugur maður og ósérhlífinn. Þessir eiginleikar hans komu ekki hvað síst fram þegar hann, þá roskinn maður, missti sjónina en vann þó flest verk sín áfram og fór allra sinna ferða án aðstoðar.
Ég átti því láni að fagna að alast upp í nágrenni við Jóhannes og systkini hans tvö, Teit og Soffíu. Jóhannes og þau systkini voru alltaf reiðubúin til að rétta foreldrum mínum hjálparhönd og mér er minnisstætt að Jóhannes sagði einhverju sinni að jafnt skyldi yfir heimilin bæði ganga.
Árið 1928 tók Jóhannes við búi á Brúarfossi ásamt Teiti og Soffíu. Á Brúarfossi var símstöð og pósthús og var því oft gestkvæmt á heimilinu af þeim sökum. Einnigvar svo áður en bílvegir komu og bílar urðu algengir að Brúarfoss var áfangastaður manna sem voru á leið í kaupstað og úr. Mátti heita að á þeim tímum væri á Brúarfossi rekinn gististaður. Ætíð var gestum tekið vel á Brúarfossi, enda systkinin glaðsinna og skemmtileg.
Þega Helgi, bróðir þeirra, missti fyrri konu sína frá þremur ungum börnum, tóku þau systkinin tvö þeirra til sín, þau Guðbjörgu og Boga, og reyndust þeim sem bestu foreldrar. Einnig ólst upp hjá systkinunum Jón Örn Gissurarson.
Jóhannes giftist 1960 Margréti Þorvaldsdóttur. Margrét er látin fyrir all mörgum árum. Jóhannes dvaldist síðustu árin á Dvalarheimili aldraðra í Borgarnesi. Þar leið honum vel og var þakklátur starfsmönnum heimilisins fyrir velvild í sinn garð.
Nú eru þau öll látin systkinin á Brúarfossi. Þau voru öll góðar og heiðarlegar manneskjur sem gott var að þekkja og eiga að vinum. Ég vil þakka þeim tryggð þeirra og vináttu við foreldra mína, okkur systkinin og fjölskyldur okkar.
Blessuð sé minning systkinanna á Brúarfossi.

Johanna Gudrun Jonsdottir (widely known by her stagename "Yohanna") singing her ESC hit from Gröna Lund in Stockholm, Sweden during Sommarkrysset (Summer X) show.
