On the run from the police, S.S. Kumar, a thief, comes across a private invitation to the island of Sir John Locksley addressed to Raja Bahadur Singh. When the Raja is shot, Kumar takes him to a nearby hospital, dons a Sikh's turban, poses as the Raja's son and goes to the private island of John. Also attending are K.P.W. Iyengar, Dr. Bukhari, Colonel Columbus, and Countess Rasmussen. A stunned Kumar finds out that all of these invitees are master criminals and gangsters. Kumar's guise does not fool anyone, including his former sweetheart, Sheila Enders, nevertheless John permits him to stay on, as he feels that Kumar's career, though an amateur, is consistent with those already present. The reason why John has invited them is to find a successor to take his place as he is dying of cancer. He feels that one of his invitees can be trusted to take his place and for this he has arranged for them to steal a diamond (Shalimar) worth 135 crores of rupees. This gem is placed in a secure place within his palace, which is alarmed, and guarded by armed men 24 hours a day. He challenges one of them to steal the shalimar - but if anyone fails then they are killed instantly. Pitted against such veterans, it looks like Kumar has got himself into a bind that he may not come out of in one piece.

Rare 103-Minute Documentary on Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz: "All About Mankiewicz" (1983)

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on February 11, 1909, Joseph Leo Mankiewicz first worked for the movies as a translator of intertitles, employed by Paramount in Berlin, the UFA's American distributor at the time (1928). He became a dialoguist, then a screenwriter on numerous Paramount productions in Hollywood, most of them Jack Oakie vehicles. Still in his 20s, he produced first-class MGM films, including De bronzen godin (1940). Having left Metro after a dispute with studio chief Louis B. Mayer over Judy Garland, he then worked for Darryl F. Zanuck at 20th Century-Fox, producing The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), when Ernst Lubitsch's illness first brought him to the director's chair for Dragonwyck (1946). Mankiewicz directed 20 films in a 26-year period, successfully attempted every kind of movie from Shakespeare adaptation to western, from urban sociological drama to musical, from epic film with thousands of extras to a two-character picture. A Letter to Three Wives (1949) and All About Eve (1950) brought him wide recognition along with two Academy Awards for each as a writer and a director, seven years after his elder brother Herman J. Mankiewicz won Best Screenplay for Citizen Kane (1941). His more intimate films like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), The Barefoot Contessa (1954)--his only original screenplay--and The Honey Pot (1967) are major artistic achievements as well, showing Mankiewicz as a witty dialoguist, a master in the use of flashback and a talented actors' director (he favored English actors and had in Rex Harrison a kind of alter-ego on the screen).

Rex Harrison - Interview excerpt on the film "My Fair Lady" (plus "Why Can't The English?")
This is an excerpt of a "canned" interview taken from a rare record given to radio stations designed to promote the film and soundtrack of "My Fair Lady" (1964). Rex Harrison, the unforgettable star ("Professor Henry Higgins") of the film - (starring along with the incandescent Audrey Hepburn) - provides a bit of insight about the upcoming film for radio listeners. The DJ was given a script with "questions" for Rex, while Mr. Harrison delivers the "answers" - so, when it was all pieced together, it provided the illusion of an actual interview with the star.
Rex Harrison also sings the first song in the film and on the soundtrack - "Why Can't The English?" It is interesting in that when the film was made, Rex Harrison insisted that the only way he could perform his vocal "talk songs" was "live" during the actual filming - (and rightfully so) since it would be much too difficult for him to constantly lip-sync to a prerecorded soundtrack.
Rex himself explained in his 1975 autobiography "Rex" (William Morrow & Company): "In order to go right through the numbers without stopping I had to use a neck mike, a shortwave radio microphone slung around my neck under my clothes. They are used quite a lot in cabarets now, but then was the first time they had been used in a film studio. I did the first two numbers with this mike before the studio had permission from Washington to use this type of device. We kept picking up all sorts of things on the same wavelength, including taxi drivers and the mayor of Miami - no wonder Washington was worried. Often we would have a good take right through the number, only to have the sound people confess that they have picked up a radio-phone conversation, so that we would have to go through the whole thing again."
While this neck mike was a new device, it helped Rex Harrison immensely in presenting his Academy Award winning performance as Henry Higgins. The original soundtrack album of "My Fair Lady" was released as Columbia KOL 8000 / KOS 2600 Stereo. Orchestra under the direction of Andre Previn.
