We don't know what they're doing. It happens in the dark, without any accountability and without any public say in how these programmes are operated or if they should exist at all. And it's very concerning when a foreign intelligence agency like the National Security Agency can propose a law to be put in place in New Zealand for the GCSB which is the August law that was passed last year, and the GCSB can start basically proposing programmes that are unlawful at the time they're being considered and say 'Hey, pass a law to make this legal, and we're going to go ahead and put this out immediately.' Why are they considering programmes that are not legal? These are things that the public has not just the right to know, but the responsibility to know because how can the government have the consent of the governed if they don't know what's going on." SCRIPT Edward Snowden slammed the operations of Western surveillance agencies during a video interview at a press conference in Auckland, Monday, questioning the legality of the agencies' conduct and lack of accountability. Speaking from Moscow, Snowden stated that the private data of New Zealand citizens was available to all major Western surveillance agencies, citing New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau (GCsB), Canada's Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC), USA's National Security Agency (NSA), and the United Kingdom's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). He went on to criticise the NSA's pull over New Zealand's surveillance policies, referencing the US agency's influence over a surveillance policy law passed in New Zealand, August 2013 that allowed the GCSB to propose what Snowden called 'unlawful' programmes. The NSA whistleblower finished by calling for more government accountability and further public knowledge over surveillance agency operations, asking the question "how can the government have the consent of the governed if they don't know what's going on?" Among others speaking at the Moment of Truth conference, Snowden was accompanied by Megaupload founder and Kiwi politician Kim Dotcom, as well as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
