Quotes:
Announcer: Hello and welcome to the Ronald Reagan Memorial Bowl, here in the pretty L.A. suburb of Hollywood. Well, we're about to witness All-in Wrestling, brought to you tonight, ladies and gentlemen, by the makers of Scum, the world's first combined hair oil, foot ointment, and salad dressing; and by the makers of Titan, the novelty nuclear missile. You never know when it'll go off.
First Bruce: They're a typical Hollywood audience. All the kids are on drugs and all the adults are on roller skates.
Albatross Woman: Albatross... Albatross. ALBATROSS. [looks to someone in the crowd] You're not supposed to be smoking that. Albatross.::Someone in the crowd: What flavour is it? What flavour is it?::Albatross Woman: Seagull sickle... Pelican bon-bon... ALBATROSS.::Wife: I will have two ice creams, please.::Albatross Woman: I don't have any ice creams, I've just got this albatross. ALBATROSS.::Wife: What flavour is it?::Albatross Woman: ...Well it's an albatross. Isn't it? It's not any bloody flavour. ALBATROSS.::Wife: It's got to be some flavour, I mean everything's got a flavour.::Albatross Woman: All right. All right. It's bloody... albatross flavour... Bleedin' seabird bleedin' flavour. ALBATROSS.::Wife: You get wafers with it?::Albatross Woman: Of course you don't getting fucking wafers with it, you cunt. It's a fucking albatross isn't it.
Michelangelo: Good evening, Your Holiness.::The Pope: Evening, Michelangelo. I want to talk to you about this painting of yours, The Last Supper. I'm not happy about it.::Michelangelo: Oh, dear. It took me hours.::The Pope: Not happy at all.::Michelangelo: Is it the jello you don't like?::The Pope: No.::Michelangelo: It does add a bit of colour, doesn't it. Oh, I know, you don't like the kangaroo.::The Pope: What kangaroo?::Michelangelo: No problem, I'll paint him out.::The Pope: I never saw a kangaroo.::Michelangelo: Uh, he's right at the back. No sweat, I'll make him into a disciple. All right?::The Pope: That's the problem.::Michelangelo: What is?::The Pope: The disciples.::Michelangelo: Are they too Jewish? I made Judas the most Jewish.::The Pope: No, it's just that there are 28 of them.
First Bruce: We find your American beer like making love in a canoe. It's fucking close to water.
Husband: It's the Bishop of Leicester.::Wife: How do you know?::Husband: Tattooed on the back of his neck. I think I'd better call the police.::Wife: Shouldn't you call the church?::Son: Call the Church Police.::Husband: Good idea.
Customer: I'd like to have an argument please.
Flying minstrel: I've got two legs, from my hips to the ground / And when I move them, they walk around / And when I lift them, they climb the stairs / And when I shave them, they ain't got hairs.
Barrister 1: I did my whole, "Serious offense" bit and then I waggled me wig!::Husband: You did what?::Barrister 1: I waggled me wig!
Yorkshireman 1: Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves.::Yorkshireman 2: But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

What did Mao Zedong really say?
What did Mao Zedong really say on October 1, 1949? History records that Mao uttered the now famous slogan: ''The Chinese people have stood up.''
It's perhaps the most famous slogan on the mainland and those few words nicely sum up the prevailing sentiment at the time: The Communist Party, at last victorious, had stood up to Japanese invaders, meddling western influences and a corrupt Kuomingtan

Chairman Mao (Mao Zedong or Mao Tse Tung) is the founder of the People's Republic of China in 1949 and one of the founders of the Chinese Communist party in 1921. He is recognized as one of the most prominent Communist theoreticians. He is also known as a great poet.
Mao Zedong was a very practical person before 1949. He did many thorough investigations about China and he developed his theories based on his studies. He was so successful in his early years that people worshipped him and everyone loved him.
Things changed after 1949. Mao was a great thinker, but he had no respect to any existing laws. Basically he was the law and he could not allow anybody else to chanllenge him. He challenged and destroyed the traditional Chinese culture, good and bad. He gave woman the same right as man, but destroyed the traditional value of woman. This also made him very unrealistic, as he said in a poem, "Ten thousand years is too long, seize the day." The Great Leap Forward (1958) is a direct result of such thinking.
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), everything took a very long pause except constant class struggle and population growth. Inflation was zero and salary freezed for everyone. Education was badly damaged. Mao developed his fighting (or struggling) philosophy in his late years, as he said, "Fighting with heaven, fighting with earth, and fighting with human being, what a great pleasure!" China was isolated from the rest of the world and nobody knew the outside world at all.

Don't forget! Crash Course posters and t-shirts at http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse
In which John Green teaches you about China's Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China's 20th century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades, and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History.

Chairman Mao Zedong, shortly prior to its death, this time he wanted to watch everybody walk out instead of going first. Mao said: "If you are not going, I will also not go"...
毛泽东:"你们不走,我也不走" ...
Mao Zedong is still very popular in China because he is considered the founder of New China and laid the first foundation, on which other late Chinese leaders could built with Deng Xiaoping in front.
All revolutions and turning points for countries in history have cost blood, as in the West, only China is pursuing it much later than most Western countries. Don't forget we did the same thing in the West, and often much worse.
I'm from the Netherlands and we for instance have a much more bloody history than China with slavery, oppression, colonisation and murder within and even outside our country. That period was the Dutch golden age and the fundament for our wealth today. We even admire and honor the people in charge during those times with statues and galleries, just like how the Chinese honor Mao.
In hard times with an economic embargo from the entire West unfortunately many Chinese died during the great famine. He also did make a few mistakes though, however during his time leading China he did a fair amount to help out the disadvantaged of China. Mao is therefore still most popular amongst the poor and workers.
From a Chinese perspective: Without Mao there would be no united China as we see today.

The red sun in our hearts
Shines a piece of red to the borders of the motherland
One hundred thousand miles singing loud and clear
Feet tread on the flying red flag in highlands
One thousand rivers.... run into the sea
Ten thousand sunflowers open towards the sun
Yanbian people indulge in singing
Our hearts' red sun
Oh.... Chairman Mao
We love you indefinitely
Your teachings are kept in our hearts
Yanbian people wish you
Longevity with no boundaries, longevity of years with no boundaries

What did Mao Zedong really say on October 1, 1949? History records that Mao uttered the now famous slogan: ''The Chinese people have stood up.''
It's perhaps the most famous slogan on the mainland and those few words nicely sum up the prevailing sentiment at the time: The Communist Party, at last victorious, had stood up to Japanese invaders, meddling western influences and a corrupt Kuomingtang.
But despite what the history books and documentaries teach, those who were in Tiananmen Square on October 1, 1949 say Mao never utter the phrase for which he is credited.

First Premier of the People's Republic of China: Zhou Enlai Interview (1965)
Zhou Enlai (周恩来 pinyin: Zhōu Ēnlái; Wade-Giles: Chou En-lai; IPA: [tʂóʊ ə́nlǎɪ]; 5 March 1898 -- 8 January 1976) was the first Premier of the People's Republi...
Zhou Enlai (周恩来 pinyin: Zhōu Ēnlái; Wade-Giles: Chou En-lai; IPA: [tʂóʊ ə́nlǎɪ]; 5 March 1898 -- 8 January 1976) was the first Premier of the People's Republic of China, serving from October 1949 until his death in January 1976. Zhou served under Mao Zedong and was instrumental in consolidating the control of the Communist Party's rise to power, forming foreign policy, and developing the Chinese economy.
A skilled and able diplomat, Zhou served as the Chinese foreign minister from 1949 to 1958. Advocating peaceful coexistence with the West after the stalemated Korean War, he participated in the 1954 Geneva Conference and helped orchestrate Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China. He helped devise policies regarding the bitter disputes with the U.S., Taiwan, the Soviet Union (after 1960), India and Vietnam. Zhou is best known as the long-time top aide to Mao Zedong, specializing in foreign policy. Their contrasting personalities made them an effective team, according to Henry Kissinger, the American diplomat who had extensive dealings with both men:
Mao dominated any gathering; Zhou suffused it. Mao's passion strove to overwhelm opposition; Zhou's intellect would seek to persuade or outmaneuver it. Mao was sardonic; Zhou penetrating. Mao thought of himself as a philosopher; Zhou saw his role as an administrator or a negotiator. Mao was eager to accelerate history; Zhou was content to exploit its currents.
Largely due to his expertise, Zhou was able to survive the purges of other top officials during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. His attempts at mitigating the Red Guards' damage and his efforts to protect others from their wrath made him immensely popular in the Revolution's later stages. As Mao Zedong's health began to decline in 1971 and 1972, Zhou and the Gang of Four struggled internally over leadership of China. Zhou's health was also failing, however, and he died eight months before Mao on 8 January 1976. The massive public outpouring of grief in Beijing turned to anger towards the Gang of Four, leading to the Tiananmen Incident. Although succeeded by Hua Guofeng, it was Deng Xiaoping, Zhou's ally, who was able to outmaneuver the Gang of Four politically and eventually take Mao's place as Paramount leader by 1977.
