Ever since the announcement of Jesse Eisenberg as Batman v. Superman’s Lex Luthor, there’s been a collective, “really?” from fans and audiences, but that doesn’t come without curiosity. Eisenberg is certainly a wild card that has more than proved his capability as a serious actor with roles in films like Adventureland and The Social Network, but the announcement for him to play cutthroat businessman and ruthless villain Lex Luthor still caught us by surprise. But as more and more people talked, rumors began swirling that Eisenberg and crew might be taking advantage of his Social Network character, making Lex Luthor a more modern interpretation of what successful businessman are today in the silicon valley…hipsters. And now, some clever viral marketing from the film has confirmed these thoughts. Way back in 2008, Christopher Nolan ran some massively successful viral marketing campaigns for The Dark Knight, and it appears Batman v. Superman director Zack Snyder has decided to take a page out of Nolan’s playbook. Today, popular magazine Fortune ran a piece on the fictional Lex Luthor, Jr., someone they claim is the youngest person ever to be named the magazine’s Businessperson of the Year and was also featured as one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. The article gives fans a look into the Eisenberg-Luthor’s back-story from a troubled past with his father to his eccentric work style to his full support of military contracts. This is Lex 2.0. Firstly, the article confirms Luthor’s hipster status – he’s vegan, wears jeans to work, has a climbing wall set up for his employees inside their “inspiration station,” and he verbalizes computer code like it’s a second language. The article also describes Lex Jr. as indifferent toward his German immigrant father, Alexander Luthor Sr., who started LexCorp ten years before Junior came into his life. Lex now accepts his deceased father’s businessman approach to parenthood, using his son as a selling point to investors as being a legacy-building do-gooder. But after Alexander Sr.’s untimely death (we’re speculating the whole murder by vengeful son thing), Lex Jr. took over, using his genius understanding of technology to bring LexCorp to new heights, mainly by agreeing to military contracts, something the article mentions Bruce Wayne won’t do, giving Lex the profitable advantage. That gives us a solid background into where LexCorp and Wayne Enterprises collide in the story. The article also makes mention of Lex donating a lot of his money as well, though not as much as Bruce – perhaps a fundraiser will be when we see these two characters meet for the first time on screen? But those weren’t the only character drops – there’s a few hints as to Lex’s growing feud with Superman – the article makes a passing mention of Lex’s “world-famous collection of meteorite crystals,” which we’re guessing includes a certain other-worldly green crystal. And finally the article ends with Lex teasing at a major technological release from LexCorp, with the mogul commenting, “This is a product that will protect you, and everyone, from threats you don’t even know about yet. I don’t want to scare anybody… much. But there are a lot of threats out there, and they’re here today.” Wonder who that threat might be…? What do you guys think?
