BIOGRAPHY
A key figure in the first period of jazz history, Oliver's career was a mix of triumph and miscalculation. He was bandleading in New Orleans in the early years of the century, but it wasn't until the 1910s that he really rose above the other local groups. He went to Chicago in 1919 and created what became the Creole Jazz Band around 1921, which Louis Armstrong joined in 1922. They were a sensation, and made the first important group of records by black jazzmen. His later band, the Dixie Syncopators, was less successful, and turning down an offer from New York's Cotton Club may have been a crucial mistake (it went to Duke Ellington). Though he was still touring and recording, he was out of fashion by the early '30s and was often barely able to play, owing to poor teeth. He died in Savannah, Georgia, reduced to working as a pool-hall janitor (COOK, Richard; MORTON, Brian. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings. 8th edition. London: Penguin Books, 2006, p. 997).

King Porter -- Joe King Oliver/Jelly Roll Morton 1924
King Porter Stomp is a tune by Jelly Roll Morton.
Morton himself first recorded the number in 1923 as a piano solo. He did not file a copyright on the tune until the following year. Also in 1924 Morton recorded a duet of the number with Joe "King" Oliver on cornet. Morton said that he had actually written the number almost 20 years earlier, and that it was named after his friend fellow pianist Porter King.
This is from a set of two tunes done with the Oliver Morton duo in Decemeber 1924 in Chicago. The other tune is Tom Cat Blues, previously posted on youtube and daily motion. It took both musicians until 1926 before they made recordings with their own bands again. Oliver with his "Dixie Syncopators" and Morton after a few recordings with lesser known groups with his "Red Hot Peppers"
Both tunes have been famous early jazz samples. Just a few days ago my Brazilian cornet playing friend Joao Missali played a beautiful rendition of the King Porter Stomp together with Jelly Roll styled pianist Alexandre LeHage.

Frankie & Johnnie~1930~Joe "King" Oliver
Frankie and Johnny is an American standard that just evolved over time. It was first published in 1904 but there is no particular composer. The song is the story of Frankie Baker, a 22 year old living on St Louis' riverfront, who killed Allen Britt, her 17 year old lover, in 1899,Frankie was acquitted due to self defense claims.
Here, Joe Oliver and his 1930 orchestra play Frankie and Johnni

The General Phonograph Corporation (Okeh) Studios 25 West 45th Street, New York, New York.
Ralph Peter, producer / Charles Hibbard, head engineer / Peter Decker, assistant engineer
Transferred with a Gemini TT-1000USB turntable with a Shure N78S 78 stylus and cartridge.
One of the two rare sides Oliver cut with Butterbeans and Susie in New York, early 1924, the other being "Kiss Me Sweet". This was shortly after the dissolution of the Creole Jazz Band, while Oliver was working with the David Payton Orchestra. He was most likely included on this session because of Okeh's artist policy of having its artists work as session musicians as well as exclusive ones, though his contract was likely not rented after the breakup of the CJB. He is accompanied by Clarence Williams on the piano here, and the high fidelity of Okeh's recording system even picks up his noodling behind Susie Edwards' vocal. Though his solo is a little shaky, he still plays beautifully, and you can clearly hear how influential he was on young Louis Armstrong. Such a lovely record.

Here's one of the earliest Dixie Syncopator sides, the famous tune "Jackass Blues", featuring a guest vocal from Miss Georgia Taylor. Of note on this great side is a fantastic bluesy chorus from Oliver, and an equally great clarinet solo from Albert Nichols. Also listen at the beginning to hear footsteps of someone behind Ory's trombone intro.
The Dixie Syncopators were formed out of the Dave Peyton Orchestra, which Oliver joined after the dissolution of the Creole Jazz Band. The Syncopators opened at the Plantation Cafe at the end of 1925, and ended up sticking together until around 1928, when Luis Russell took the band to New York. Eventually this became the Luis Russell Orchestra, and then the Louis Armstrong Orchestra, so it stayed a pretty great band for around a decade, though some members didn't stick it out that long. The band's greatest hits include "Deep Henderson", "Too Bad", "Jackass Blues", "Snag It", "Someday Sweetheart", "Wang Wang Blues" and arguably the hottest record of the 20s, "Wa-Wa-Wa".

One of the hottest records of the 20s IMO, and my favorite Oliver side! Features fantastic playing by the King himself, Albert Nicholas, Barney Bigard, Bud Scott, Luis Russell ("Oh, play it Mr. Russell!") and the rest. Listen for the drive of the rhythm section on this side, as well as the power of the horns. Though Oliver was past his prime, he and Bob Schoffner both play excellently on this side, especially in the second half of the tune.

Joe "King" Oliver (Dec.19,1885 - April 10,1938) was a jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly noted for his playing style, pioneering the use of mutes. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played regularly, including "Dippermouth Blues", "Sweet Like This", "Canal Street Blues", and "Doctor Jazz". He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. Two of Armstrong's most famous recordings, "West End Blues" and "Weather Bird", were Oliver compositions. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today".
Joseph Oliver was born in Aben, Louisiana, near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish, and moved to New Orleans in his youth. Oliver played cornet in the New Orleans brass bands and dance bands and also in the city's red-light district, Storyville. The band he co-led with trombonist Kid Ory was considered New Orleans' hottest and best in the 1910s. Oliver achieved great popularity in New Orleans across economic and racial lines, and was in demand for playing jobs from rough working class black dance halls to white society debutante parties.
According to an interview at the Tulane's Hogan Jazz Archive with Oliver's widow Stella Oliver, in 1919 a fight broke out at a dance where Oliver was playing, and the police arrested Oliver and the band along with the fighters. This made Oliver decide to leave the Jim Crow South.
By 1922, after travels in California, Oliver was the jazz king in Chicago, with King Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band performing at the Royal Gardens. Virtually all the members of this band went on to notable solo careers. Personnel were Oliver on cornet, his protegé Louis Armstrong, second cornet, Baby Dodds, drums, Johnny Dodds, clarinet, Lil Hardin, on piano, Honore Dutrey on trombone, and Bill Johnson, bass and banjo. Recordings made by this group in 1923 demonstrated the serious artistry of the New Orleans style of collective improvisation or Dixieland music to a wider audience.
In the mid and late 1920s Oliver's band transformed into a hybrid of the old New Orleans style jazz band and the nationally popular larger dance band, and in 1926 was christened "King Oliver and His Dixie Syncopators". Although he suffered from gum disease which started to diminish his playing abilities, Oliver remained a popular band leader through the decade.
The Great Depression was harsh to Oliver; he lost his life savings when a Chicago bank collapsed, as he struggled to keep his band together on a series of hand-to-mouth gigs until the band broke up and Oliver was stranded in Savannah, Georgia, where he worked as a janitor at Wimberly's Recreation Hall and died in poverty at a rooming house).
As a player, Oliver took great interest in altering his horn's sound. He pioneered in the use of mutes, including the plumber's plunger, derby hat, and bottles and cup in the bell of his horn. His recording "WaWaWa" with the Dixie Syncopators can be credited with giving the name wah-wah to such techniques.
Oliver was also noted as a composer, having written many tunes still regularly played, including "Dippermouth Blues", "Sweet Like This", "Canal Street Blues", and "Doctor Jazz". Two of Armstrong's most famous recordings, "West End Blues" and "Weather Bird", were Oliver compositions.
Oliver performed mostly on cornet. Oliver credited Buddy Bolden, as an early influence. Oliver, in turn, was a major influence on many younger musicians in New Orleans and Chicago, including Tommy Ladnier, Paul Mares, Muggsy Spanier, Louis Panico, Johnny Wiggs, and most famously Louis Armstrong.

Here, Joe Oliver and his 1930 orchestra play Frankie and Johnnie with harmonica accompaniment by Roy Schmeck. The recording was made at Victor Records 46th street sound labs in New York on January 15, 1930. The 78 carries Victor label V38109, matrix BVE58339.

Joe "King" Oliver: American Jazz Band Leader and Horn Player Extraordinaire. Before Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith or Jelly Roll Morton, there was the King. Born near Donaldsonville, the old capitol of Louisiana, he moved to New Orleans as a youth. From 1908 to 1917, Oliver could be heard playing his sweet cornet in New Orleans brass bands and dance halls. Joe and Kid Ory formed a band in the late 1910s that was New Orleans' hottest and best. He was in demand from the Red Light Storyville parlors of moral corruption to the most upscale white celebrity balls and broke down racial bias in New Orleans until he was arrested by a corrupt police force in 1918. The arrest convinced Oliver to leave New Orleans for Chicago with wife Estrella and daughter Ruby. In 1921 he toured the west coast and in '22 formed his Creole Jazz band in Chicago with protege Louis Armstrong on second cornet; Bobby Dodds~drums; Johnny Dodds~clarinet; Lil Hardin (later to become Louis Armstrong's wife) on piano; Honore Dutrey~trombone; and Will Johnson~bass. They recorded for Okeh, Paramount, Gennett, and Columbia and introduced Dixieland to northern audiences. Louis Armstrong, who owed his talent and career to "Papa Joe" , his idol and inspiration, said, had it not been for "King", Jazz would never have developed to the art it became.
Composed by Joe Oliver with lyrics added later by Clarence Williams.

Joe Walsh is a former Republican congressman who represented Illinois' 8th district from 2011 to 2013. He's now hosts the Joe Walsh Show, which airs on WIND-AM 560 in Chicago and WNYM-AM 970 in New York.
While in office, Walsh emerged as a Tea Party favorite and vocal critic of the Obama Administration, railing against government spending, Obamacare, taxes, gun control and immigration policy.
Cenk Uygur sits down with former Congressman Walsh to discuss:
- Why so many Republicans refuse to believe that Barack Obama was born in the United States
- Should the IRS be abolished in favor of a "flat" tax?
- The influence of corporate interests on American democracy
- Is the main problem with the political system that there are too many misinformed voters?
- What Walsh had to do as the poorest member of congress
- Why the average American can't run for office any more
- Does donating money equals free speech?
- Is it time to cut Social Security and Medicare?
- Are health costs going up under Obamacare or are they going down? What's the Republican alternative to Obamacare?
- Is there any possibility for a two-state solution in Israel?
- How much time members of congress spend just on fundraising
- What happened to the Tea Party opposition to the Big Banks?

EPISODE BREAKDOWN: On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin remarks on the 70 Nepali migrant works who have died as a result of unsafe working conditions in the run up to the Qatar World Cup. Abby then calls out the corporate media for their game-show style coverage of the government shutdown whilst ignoring other stories such as Israel's fear mongering at the UNGA, and California's recent ban the NDAA indefinite detention provision. Abby then speaks with Margaret Flowers, Organizer for Popular Resistance about why fast tracking the TPP is so dangerous to the democratic process, and why everyone should care about this "free trade deal". BTS wraps up the show with an epic exclusive interview with comedian Joe Rogan, host of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, discussing everything from psychedelic drugs to violence in the UFC.
