Zagreb was the second city I explored on my two-week trip around Croatia. Learned how to ride the trams the hard way, ate some strawberries in the central square, walked through a flower market, watched people light candles and pray next to a magical painting, and visited the Museum of Broken Relationships.

Zagreb is the political and cultural heart of Croatia, an amiable capital city located at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and a city that holds many memories of the Danube Monarchy. Zagreb originated in the Middle Ages from two rival settlements on neighbouring hills, the bishop's seat of Kaptol which is dominated by its cathedral and the free city of Gradec which was its political centre. They both formed the city’s Upper Town. The cathedral dominates the Kaptol district, its two steeples towering above the old city. The city’s marvellous Botanical Garden contains an array of wonderful natural sights. It boasts ten thousand tree and plant varieties including alpine, Mediterranean, and the exotic. Small ponds with water plants are also included in the four point seven hectare gardens. An imposing arcaded facade forms the entrance to the Mirogoj Cemetery which is laid out as a park and is an artistic masterpiece. Here, leading sculptors built tombs for the country’s most famous personalities from the arts, culture and politics, including the grave of Franjo Tudjman. A narrow mountain road leads up to the Medvednica Nature Park, outside the city gates. The mediaeval Medvedgrad Fortress is a most striking and interesting attraction located in twenty three thousand hectares of natural landscape. Zagreb is a special city, unique, with a never-ending story, a city that has witnessed a thousand years and, due to its historic values, has become a European Capital Of Culture.

It's a very clean and quiet place to socialize and explore the history and culture of the Croatia heritage.
I came here as part of my travels to live and experience this magnificent place while maintaining a $20/day meal budget. It wasn't difficult since there was an abundance of options to choose from. I found this place to be interesting, safe, and fun. The people are very friendly and helpful, and English was not a problem here.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Zagreb, the capital and the largest city in Croatia.
Croatia, abundant in natural beauties may rightly be listed among the most attractive regions of the Mediterranean. The capital city is Zagreb with a population of 1 million. The city was founded in 1094 by King Saint Ladislaus. The town was established directly next to the capitol. It can still be considered the center of the city. Tomislav, the first Croatian king ruled in the early middle ages. His equestrian statue stands on the square named after him.
Walking around the downtown area, we can encounter statues of some more historic personalities, August Signor, Flavio Clovic, Miklosh Jurisics and the stone figure of Ban Jelacic. Conflicts resulting in the war between the independent capitol and -- were halted by the attack of the Turks when the residents pulled together to fortify the city walls. Zagreb reattained its title as the capital only after the passing of the Turkish. But the legal union of the city parts had to wait until 1850. The city's development started picking up in the age of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. This is when the main railway station was built together with the national theater and the academy. The style of the buildings of that time shows a striking resemblance to buildings in Vienna and Budapest.
The downtown area closed to motor vehicle traffic is abundant in green areas and flowering parks. This is where the nicest shopping street of the city, the -- begins. The statue of Jelacic is the artwork of Anton Fernkorn, the famous sculptor of Vienna. On Jelacic Square, the most important tram lines meet and local people feel that this is the real heart to the city. There's also a small fountain collecting the water of the Manduevac Spring. Beyond the square rises St. Stephen's cathedral built together with the palace of the archbishop and the seminary. In the tomb of the church, well known historic figures are buried such as Zirinis and Frangipani. The history museum was established in the Opatijska Street in the building of an old monastery.
St. Mark's Square is the center of public life in Zagreb. In front of Ban's palace, on weekends and on holiday, the changing of the guard entertains the tourists. The simple building of the Croatian parliament stands opposite. Nearby is a memorial exhibition of the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. We can also see the cannon of the Tower of -- which used to signal noon and its bell which signal night when the guard closed the gates of the city. A beautiful view open up to the southern part of the city from the top of the tower. The quaint little houses were rescued by reconstruction from under modern houses that had been built on top of them earlier.

Zagreb, Croatia: Europe Train - Hosted by Sofia von Porat & Nathan Schacherer
It's beautiful here in Zagreb. The rain is gone so it's perfect. Yeah. We’re going to start the day by visiting the upper town which is where Zagreb was founded. We've just walked up to the stone gate. This stone gate divides the upper and lower town here in Zagreb and this stone gate has a very significant meaning. It's become almost like a chapel. We found a painting of St. Mary and little baby Jesus miraculously saved from a fire in 1931. It's become a place of worship. So they had to painting in there and people come in and light candles and pray. Now we're going to go The market and see if we can buy some veggies for lunch or something. It got veggies they got flowers, Lots of local produce. So it seems really cool.
We're in Dola's market and it really is a farmers market. There are fruit and veggies everywhere. This is where the farmers come in from outside of Zagreb and sell their produce to locals. I might try and find something for myself. We've gone to the market, we've seen some veggies, we've seen all the local produce now we're going to go up this hill to the tower which has a cannon in it that goes off every day at 12 o'clock. They've got this tram that goes up to the tower, it's one of the shortest tram rides in the world. It's about 10 to 15 seconds long. It's only for the lazy ones. There are steps of the side, which were going to take. We're waiting for them to fire the cannon off the tower at 12 o'clock, so we walked around the corner and we realize that St. Mark's Church is right here, and this church has such cool designs on top of the roof, really really colorful. Normally go to church to check out the inside, you come to this church to check out the roof. I think it's really cool. Boom! We just witnessed the 12 o'clock cannon. Apparently this cannon goes off every single day at 12 o'clock. No one knows why, there's a legend, a big story behind it. No one knows the truth but every day at 12 o'clock, boom! It was powerful. I thought, there's a small little cannon hole, I thought pow, pop. It was boom, I actually felt myself get pushed backwards. Pretty cool to experience, gave me a bit of right even though I was expecting it. Now we're going to go down and grab some lunch. It's about 12 o'clock, so we're going to try and find some traditional Croatian food.
It's been a great day so far, we are having a quick lunch break. We're at this place recommended by the hostel. We got these locally brewed beer, one euro each. So cheap and so good. Very special taste, mine has a bit of a caramel taste to it. After lunch we’re going to go visit apparently one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe, sounds interesting. We're at Cemetery, and it's one of Europe's most beautiful cemeteries. I can see why. There just, there are graves everywhere there also is so much nature, so many trees, flowers, and it really is a peaceful place to come. It's really quiet. Do you think it's a little strange, that it's become a tourist attraction? It's a cemetery. It is kind of strange. I do see the attraction, I mean there is a lot of nature here and that does make it more beautiful. Yeah. Usually I feel that the cemeteries are little bit creepy, You know that there's something about them that's a bit uncomfortable, but here it's actually really nice. We found a nice place here at the cemetery where we can sit down and relax. We're going to try a traditional Croatian pastry. What is inside? And what is it called? It's called borek and this one is with spinach in it, and some cheese, I think as well. It looks good. Yeah it looks really good, try some. I had a bite before. It's good, huh? Really nice. We've had a great day here in Zagreb. Tomorrow we're going to catch an overnight train to Bosnia. Sarajevo's next, so we'll see you then.

Take a tour of Zagreb National Theatre in Zagreb, Croatia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The National Theatre in Zagreb, Croatia elegantly welcomes patrons from across the plaza on which it stands.
This profoundly beautiful theatre is also a wellspring of national pride and integral in the history of the Croatian National Movement.
The impetus for this construction came when in the 19th century the government realized the need for a new national theatre to serve as a cultural center of Zagreb.
After over 150 years, the Zagreb National Theatre is still the prime source for Croatian theater.
The entrance is marked by the famous 'Source of Life', a fountain designed by Croatian native, sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
The fountain beckons patrons and admirers while representing the Theatre's ever-flowing pride.

Take a tour of St. Mark's Church in Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
There are very few churches in the world quite like Saint Mark's in Zagreb.
The church is immediately identifiable, thanks to its bright white walls and colorful roof.
The design on the roof tiles features Zagreb's coat of arms on the right.
To the left are the insignias of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia.
The church is mostly Gothic, but a Romanesque window remains from the thirteenth century.
The hallmark feature of the church is its exquisitely decorated south portal, depicting significant religious scenes.

Travel video about destination Croatia.
Croatia is a European country located in the Mediterranean, a treasure trove of culture and architecture with a long history, ancient buildings, Christian churches, Venetian cities, colourful traditions and stunning coastline of more than a thousand islands. Zagreb is its political and cultural focal point, an amiable capital city situated at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The Kaptol district has been its Catholic heart since the Middle Ages. An atmospheric place, Upper Town is a gem Zagreb’s historic past. North of Zagreb on the western border with Slovenia, the picture-perfect Veliki Tabor Castle rises on a hill, its Renaissance courtyard with columns and arcades possessing a touch of southern elegance. Kumrovec, birthplace of the former President of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, is located south of the castle and is now a museum village. The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula, further south on the Adriatic coast. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s harbour cities. Situated close to the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula is Pula, the oldest city on Croatia‘s eastern Adriatic coast. The largest square of the Old Town, and today‘s main square, was originally located on the site of a Roman forum. The historical centre of Split is a cultural work of art, its palace, sea aspect and bay a harmonious blend of both ancient and mediaeval times. Dubrovnik‘s historic centre possesses many treasures such as the Onofri Fountain, the Saint Spas Chapel and the Franciscan Church. Due to its magnificent location, unique Old Town and beautiful buildings, Dubrovnik has become tantamount to an amazing work of art. Croatia is a country of timeless Mediterranean beauty, a place in the sun where history reflects in the Adriatic and Occident meets Orient - a Balkan paradise!

Croatia is blessed by an unfathomable natural richness. The lakes of the Plitvice and Krka National Parks, the waterfalls, the rapids and the caves are all among the most beautiful landscapes of the world. The capital, Zagreb, captures the visitor with its inward mood and monarchy style buildings. Beside the warm watered fjords, the river deltas, the green hills, and pine forests many snow-covered mountaintops await the visitors. The smiley islands are providing the tourists various landscapes from the empty cliffs to the lush vegetation. The Adrian Sea with its bay, reefs, tempt us to water sports, and boat adventures, while its beaches promise the visitors a sunny holiday. Every settlement of the country, from the smallest to the largest, is rich in cultural, historical, architectural and artistic values. Beside the romantic, Mediterranean cities, the little bays, the idyllic villages there are baroque and gothic churches, Roman amphitheatres and theatres, sanctuaries from the roman age, golden mosaics, Venetian forts and towers invite us, and of course the roasted food and tasty vines.
