Being Well-Informed, Voting, and Speaking by every citizen is the only true way in order for Direct Democracy to work.
Video Transcript:
“Direct democracy, sometimes called "pure democracy," is a form of government in which the people themselves, rather than elected representatives, determine the laws and policies by which they are governed.”
There are no elected representatives in a direct democracy. Every citizen above a certain age are allowed to attend political meetings and vote on political issues that are being discussed. In a direct democracy, when a unanimous decision is not reached, majority rules.
There are many benefits from a Direct Democracy and they all relate to the Rights and Responsibilities that are inherent in an individual in this type of government.
As with everything, nothing is perfect. There are consequences that come from having a Direct Democracy and most of them come from the failure of citizens to exercise their rights or fulfill their responsibilities.
Direct Democracy deters corruption because of the absence of representatives. It reminds the citizens of their civil responsibility because they will feel more in control of their community. It also creates a more incorporated society as everyone’s input is heard.
These benefits are only possible if individuals fulfill their duties: Full, Active participation and being well-informed citizens. And because full, active participation is only possible when citizens exercise their rights: to vote and to speak, their rights can also be said to be duties.
Direct Democracy may sound like a dream, but it is actually very hard to achieve in practice. People are generally not very interested in politics, and therefore not everyone will vote and therefore everyone’s voice is not heard. There can also be a lack of expertise in complex matters. Manipulation can also sway the vote of the masses through promotional materials. Additionally, it is harder to get everyone’s vote when there are too many individuals in the community, and because it is harder to get votes, the legislative process is much slower. Add to this when there are multiple people without any experience in politics fight over an issue in circles. It’s not so easy to reach a consensus after all.

In this book, Walter Baber and Robert Bartlett explore the practical and conceptual implications of a new approach to international environmental governance. Their proposed approach, juristic democracy, emphasizes the role of the citizen rather than the nation-state as the source of legitimacy in international environmental law; it is rooted in local knowledge and grounded in democratic deliberation and consensus. The aim is to construct a global jurisprudence based on collective will formation. Building on concepts presented in their previous book, the award-winning Global Democracy and Sustainable Jurisprudence, Baber and Bartlett examine in detail the challenges that consensus poses for a system of juristic democracy. Baber and Bartlett analyze the implications of deliberative consensus for rule-bounded behavior, for the accomplishment of basic governance tasks, and for diversity in a politically divided and culturally plural world. They assess social science findings about the potential of small-group citizen panels to contribute to rationalized consensus, drawing on the extensive research conducted on the use of juries in courts of law. Finally, they analyze the place of juristic democracy in a future "consensually federal" system for earth system governance.

One Market Under God: Extreme Capitalism, Market Populism, and the End of Economic Democracy is a 2000 book by historian and author Thomas Frank. It was published by Anchor Books. The book traces the development of what Frank calls "market populism: the idea that markets are a far more democratic form of organization than democratically elected governments." He also discusses many facets of the New Economy, "culture studs," and internet brokerages. An excerpt of the book was the cover story of the October 12, 2000 issue of The Nation. It was reviewed in The American Prospect on December 18, 2000, in The New York Times on December 21, 2000.
One topic that Frank devotes considerable page space to is television commercials, especially those for brokerages and mutual funds. He cites many examples of corporations being compared to rock stars, the civil rights movement and the French Revolution and God.
Frank discusses the Beardstown Ladies, an informal investment group comprising elderly women from Beardstown, Illinois. He covers their usage by the media to promote the idea (mostly fallacious, in Frank's estimation) that Average Joe Americans were just as good, if not better than professionals at picking stocks.
