It´s a really big bussiness giving millions of dollars in terms of revenues to some companies around the world, but at the same time it´s a huge problem for the mother nature, as oil extraction requires a very dangerous impact on the earth.
Oil companies such as BG, Repsol, etc are only focues on drilling actions, hiring people every year to help them to keep the business up.
Not only oil but gas is another key natural resource which can be obtained in a similar way and it´s very followed by multimanional organisations.

Geologists use seismic surveys to search for geological structures that may form oil reservoirs. The "classic" method includes making an underground explosion nearby and observing the seismic response that provides information about the geological structures under the ground. However, "passive" methods that extract information from naturally-occurring seismic waves are also known.
The oil well is created by drilling a long hole into the earth with an oil rig. A steel pipe (casing) is placed in the hole, to provide structural integrity to the newly drilled well bore. Holes are then made in the base of the well to enable oil to pass into the bore. Finally a collection of valves called a "Christmas Tree" is fitted to the top, the valves regulate pressures and control flow.
During the primary recovery stage, reservoir drive comes from a number of natural mechanisms. These include: natural water displacing oil downward into the well, expansion of the natural gas at the top of the reservoir, expansion of gas initially dissolved in the crude oil, and gravity drainage resulting from the movement of oil within the reservoir from the upper to the lower parts where the wells are located. Recovery factor during the primary recovery stage is typically 5-15%.[2]
While the underground pressure in the oil reservoir is sufficient to force the oil to the surface, all that is necessary is to place a complex arrangement of valves (the Christmas tree) on the well head to connect the well to a pipeline network for storage and processing. Sometimes pumps, such as beam pumps and electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), are used to bring the oil to the surface; these are known as artificial lift mechanisms.
Over the lifetime of the well the pressure will fall, and at some point there will be insufficient underground pressure to force the oil to the surface. After natural reservoir drive diminishes, secondary recovery methods are applied. They rely on the supply of external energy into the reservoir in the form of injecting fluids to increase reservoir pressure, hence replacing or increasing the natural reservoir drive with an artificial drive. Secondary recovery techniques increase the reservoir's pressure by water injection, natural gas reinjection and gas lift, which injects air, carbon dioxide or some other gas into the bottom of an active well, reducing the overall density of fluid in the wellbore. Typical recovery factor from water-flood operations is about 30%, depending on the properties of oil and the characteristics of the reservoir rock. On average, the recovery factor after primary and secondary oil recovery operations is between 35 and 45%.
The amount of oil that is recoverable is determined by a number of factors including the permeability of the rocks, the strength of natural drives (the gas present, pressure from adjacent water or gravity), and the viscosity of the oil. When the reservoir rocks are "tight" such as shale, oil generally cannot flow through but when they are permeable such as in sandstone, oil flows freely. The flow of oil is often helped by natural pressures surrounding the reservoir rocks including natural gas that may be dissolved in the oil (Gas oil ratio), natural gas present above the oil, water below the oil and the strength of gravity. Oils tend to span a large range of viscosity from liquids as light as gasoline to heavy as tar. The lightest forms tend to result in higher extraction rates.
Petroleum engineering is the discipline responsible for evaluating which well locations and recovery mechanisms are appropriate for a reservoir and for estimating recovery rates and oil reserves prior to actual extraction.

The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host Rusty Braziel, President & Principal Energy Markets Consultant for RBN Energy, James Jensen, President of Jensen Associates, Jim Burkhard, Vice President and Head of Global Oil Market Research and Energy Scenarios at IHS, and David Knapp, Senior Editor at Energy Intelligence Group, to discuss the energy market impacts of low oil prices.
For the past several years, oil prices have remained in a predictably stable price "band" of around $100/barrel - in spite of an unprecedented spate of global disruptions and new geopolitical unrest. A combination of lackluster oil demand growth, an unprecedented supply surge courtesy of U.S. tight oil production, and other market factors has led to a rapid decline in global oil prices. While it is likely too early to answer the critical questions about how low prices will go, how long they will stay there, and whether this recent price collapse will lead to a new oil price band or an era of greater price volatility, it is a good time to start assessing some of the key variables to watch. This session is an opportunity explore the various oil market dynamics at play and assess the potential implications and outlooks for the future. Sarah Ladislaw, Director and Senior Fellow with the CSIS Energy and National Security Program, will moderate.

Geologists and geophysicists have agreed on the existence of a "prospect", a potential field. In order to find out if hydrocarbons are indeed trapped in the reservoir rock, we must drill to hit them. Bearing in mind the knowledge acquired about the substratum and the topography of the land, the best position for the installation of the drilling equipment is determined. Generally it is vertically above the point of maximum thickness of the geological layer suspected of containing hydrocarbons. The drillers then make a hole in conditions that are sometimes difficult.
Of small diameter (from 20 to 50 cm) this hole will generally go down to a depth of between 2000 and 4000 meters. Exceptionally, certain wells exceed 6000 m. One of them has even exceeded 11 000 m! Certain fields can be buried at a depth equivalent to the height of 12 Eiffel Towers ... The derrick is the visible part of the drilling rig. It is a metal tower several tens of meters high. It is used to vertically introduce the drill strings down the hole. These drill strings are made up of metallic tubes screwed end to end. They transmit a rotating movement (rotary drilling) to the drilling tool (the drill bit) and help circulate a liquid called "mud" (because of its appearance) down to the bottom of the well.
The drilling rig works like an enormous electric hand-drill of which the derrick would be the body, the drill strings the drive and the drilling tool the drill bit. The most usual tool is an assembly of three cones -- from which comes the name "tri cone" -- in very hard steel, which crushes the rock. Sometimes when the rock being drilled is very resistant, a single- block tool encrusted with diamonds is used. This wears down the rock by abrasion. Through the drill pipes, at the extremity of which the drill bit rotates, a special mud is injected, which the mud engineer prepares and controls. This mud cools the drill bit and consolidates the sides of the borehole. Moreover it avoids a gushing of oil, gas or water from the layer being drilled, by equilibrating the pressure.
Finally, the mud cleans the bottom of the well. As it makes its way along the pipes, it carries the rock fragments (cuttings) to the surface. The geologist examines these cuttings to discover the characteristics of the rocks being drilled and to detect eventual shows of hydrocarbons. The cuttings, fragments of rock crushed by the drill bit, are brought back up to the surface by the mud. To obtain information on the characteristics of the rock being drilled, a core sample is taken. The drill bit is replaced by a hollow tool called a core sampler, which extracts a cylindrical sample of several meters of rock. This core supplies data on the nature of the rock, the inclination of the layers, the structure, permeability, porosity, fluid content and the fossils present. After having drilled a few hundred of meters, the explorers and drillers undertake measurements down the hole called loggings, by lowering electronic tools into the well to measure the physical parameters of the rock being drilled.
These measures validate, or invalidate, or make more precise the hypotheses put forward earlier about the rocks and the fluids that they contain. The log engineer is responsible for the analysis of the results of the various loggings. The sides of the well are then reinforced by steel tubes screwed end to end. These tubes (called casings) are cemented into the ground. They isolate the various layers encountered. When hydrocarbons are found, and if the pressure is sufficient to allow them come to the surface naturally, the drillers do a flow check. The oil is allowed to come to the surface during several hours or several days through a calibrated hole.
The quantity recovered is measured, as are the changes in pressure at the bottom of the well. In this way, a little more knowledge is gained about the probable productivity of the field. If the field seems promising, the exploration team ends the first discovery well and goes on to drill a second, even several others, several hundred or thousand meters further away. In this way, the exploration team is able to refine its knowledge about the characteristics of the field. The decision to stop drilling is made only when all these appraisal wells have provided sufficient information either to give up the exploration or to envisage future production.

World Top 10 Largest Oil and Gas Companies
10. Kuwait Petrol Corporation -- 3.2 million barrels per day -In 1934 the Kuwait Oil Company was created by the companies we know today as BP and Chevron. Over the next 40 years, exploration and development expanded the production potential of the Kuwaiti oilfields. In 1975, the Kuwait government took over the Kuwait Oil Company and by 1980 had nationalized the oil industry under the new Kuwait Petroleum Organization (KPO).
9. Chevron -- 3.5 million barrels per day -The discovery of oil in California in 1879 led to the creation of the Pacific Coast Oil Company (PCOC). Over the following decades, the PCOC joined other companies and experienced reorganization and several name changes. In 1984, now known as Standard Oil of California, the company merged with Gulf Oil in what was the biggest merger of that time. The following reorganization saw the company renamed Chevron Corporation.
8. Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) -- 3.6 million barrels per day -In the early 20th century, American and British oil companies were developing and refining petroleum in Mexico. The Mexican government saw the potential in such industry and moved quickly to support striking oil workers in 1938. Citing the Mexican Constitution, the government took over all foreign facilities and nationalized the oil industry.
7. Royal Dutch Shell -- 3.9 million barrels per day -One of the largest gas companies in the world, Royal Dutch Shell was created in 1907 by the merging of Royal Dutch Petroleum and the Shell Transport and Trading Company of Britain. Perhaps best known in North America for its gas stations, automotive oils and association with Formula One racing, Shell's oil and gas interests stretch across the globe.
6. BP -- 4.1 million barrels per day -British Petroleum's origins date back to 1909 with the start-up of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Over the years the company changed names and expanded its drilling operations from the Middle East to Alaska and the North Sea. At one time, the company was the second largest oil company in the world. After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, however, the company sold off a number of assets to help pay for the $4.5 billion in penalties, fines and legal fees.
5. PetroChina -- 4.4 million barrels per day -This Chinese state-controlled company is likely to move up this list quickly in the coming years. PetroChina is the largest Chinese oil and gas company. Founded in 1999, this company's annual revenue is reportedly $325 billion, although this figure will likely be much higher once recent market data is released. In worldwide development, PetroChina is involved in Africa, in Australia, where it signed a $50 billion contract for Australia natural gas,
4. ExxonMobil -- 5.3 million barrels per day -This company has its origins in John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. When Rockefeller was forced to break up his company because of antitrust laws in 1911, two of the companies created were Jersey Standard and Socony. Over the years these two companies transformed into Exxon and Mobil, respectively.
3. National Iranian Oil Company -- 6.4 million barrels per day -The National Iranian Oil Company holds third place among the world's largest oil and gas producers. This company has its origins in the early 20th century when the British discovered and successfully began exploiting Iran's oil with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
2. Gazprom -- 9.7 million barrels per day -Officially known as Open Joint Stock Company Gazprom, Gazprom is the world's largest natural gas company. Created in 1989, a majority of the company is held by the Russian state while a small portion is privately owned. The company was able to grow significantly in the 1990s thanks to the fact that Gazprom's chairman was appointed Prime Minister of Russia. Don't be fooled by the 'mere' $150 billion annual revenue and $40 billion annual profits of this company.
1. Saudi Aramco -- 12 million+ barrels per day -Saudi Aramco is deservedly #1 on this list. This company generates over $1 billion a day in revenue, produces the most barrels per day of any company and is sitting on the largest proven reserves in the world. This company began with Standard Oil of California striking oil in Saudi Arabia in the 1930s. By 1944 the Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco) was formed. American support for Israel in the 1970s led the Saudi Arabian government to push for a greater stake in the domestic oil industry.

Earthquakes have become a daily occurrence in Oklahoma, which has replaced California as the most seismically active part of the United States.
For Oklahomans, long hardened to such natural disasters as tornadoes, earthquakes are a new and startling development.
Scientific evidence that Oklahoma's earthquakes are man-made, however, has been met by a climate of denial by politicians and industrialists.
The underground disposal of waste water from oil and gas drilling has been cited as the chief culprit for the dramatic increase in state seismic activity, yet the wells remain largely unregulated.
Fault Lines travels to Oklahoma to learn why these earthquakes persist, to witness the human consequences, to question elected officials and the relevant regulatory body, and to hold the local oil and gas industry to account.

WOODY ISLAND, SOUTH CHINA SEA — Chinese oil company Sinopec is building a service station in the disputed Paracels Islands in the South China Sea, Reuters reported.
The station, along with a storage tank, is being built on Woody Island and will be completed in one year. The facilities will provide fuel to all Chinese-controlled islands and reefs in the South China Sea over the next few years, Sinopec said in a post on its microblog.
Woody island has a population of about 1,000 people. China has also been expanding infrastructure on it by building a new airport facility and extending the runway.
China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion worth of maritime trade passes every year. That claim is not recognized by the United States and its allies, which conduct freedom of navigation exercises in waters claimed by China.
Other countries have claims in the South China Sea such as Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan.
On November 25, the BBC recorded a Royal Australian Air Force P-3 Orion surveillance plane conducting one such patrol. The plane tried to inform the Chinese navy, which did not respond.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, by stepping up military surveillance flights over the region, Australia is showing China it does not intend to stop operations in the disputed areas.

Rotary drilling is characterized as a method of drilling that employs a sharp, rotational drill bit to bite its way through the earth’s crust. One of the most effective and common methods of drilling, it is used in the construction, mining, and oil industries for its ability to cut through even the most challenging and hardest formations.
The rotary drill rig consists of a prime mover, hoisting equipment, rotating equipment and circulation equipment, all of which perform tasks crucial to drilling a well or hole.
With the help of pneumatics, hydraulics or an electric motor, high torque and rotation are transmitted from the prime mover to the drill, which sits on a mast above the hole.
Rotary drilling was first used for drilling oil wells in 1901 when Captain Anthony Lucas and Patillo Higgins applied it to their Spindletop well in Texas. By 1925, the rotary drilling method was improved with the use of a diesel engine. The first attempt at rotary drilling involved a device that sent a stream of water down a hollow shaft of the drill to remove cuttings. This was in contrast to the cable drill, whereby the operation is interrupted and cuttings are removed singularly before the drilling can resume.
The early rotary drill was originally used for drilling in softer formations in areas such as California and the Gulf Coast; but this changed with the production of roller and cone bits comprising steel alloy. This addition made rotary drilling suitable for harder formations, such as rock, and it was eventually used for boring deep holes and wells.
Rotary drilling became valuable to the oil industry because it was able to produce holes of a smaller diameter than cable drilling. This became possible because a hole produced by a rotary drill was the same diameter at the lower end as it was at the top.
Rotary drilling provided many improvements to drilling applications. The nature of the rotary drill proved important when oil well cements were being produced. The process of unloading continuous sacks of cement to construct a well required the drilling techniques of the rotary drill, which could accommodate these new materials.
Early oil drilling applications that were completed with cable tools or churn drills were laden with problems, such as erupting oil fountains that resulted in fires and the loss of valuable oil. The issues that arose from the high pressure of oil wells were remedied with the use of rotary drilling.

The United States, Russia, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Iceland are all laying claim to the area, with each country eager to tap into the oil, 30 percent of the earth's natural gas and resources such as diamonds, gold and iron.
In August, Russia submitted a bid to the UN claiming a territory thought to hold $30 trillion worth of oil and gas.
Meanwhile, Canada has been scrambling to defend its territory against the US arguing that it is sovereign Canadian water, not an international waterway.
Amid the Arctic land grab, Iceland has also seized the opportunity for exploration.
Vanishing at 13 percent a decade, the melting ice is expected to make drilling, mining and shipping easier.
Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, Iceland's Foreign Minister joins Counting the Cost to discuss Iceland's plans for the Arctic and protecting the region from climate change.
ISIL's toll on Turkey's economy
Turkey's economy is on a worrisome course with it's local stock market and currency continuing to decline.
Hit by political uncertainty, unable to form a coalition government and becoming ever more involved in the chaos in neighbouring Syria, Turkey's economy has been dealt a series of blows.
Just a few years ago, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AK party were almost unstoppable, both politically and economically.

Opal Mining Takes Off in Ethiopia
The Ethiopian highlands are often called "the roof of Africa".
A rugged, breathtakingly beautiful landscape, the discovery of opals in recent years has got precious gem experts around the world excited.
The industry currently generates around $25m a year and has led to Ethiopia being ranked among the five fastest growing economies in the world.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford went to the Wollo district in the country's northeast, an area generating a lot of interest among gemstone experts.

The Unist’ot’en camp in North-Western British Colombia, Canada, is front and centre in a global battle for climate and energy justice.
Since 2011 they have been maintaining a check-point controlling access through their territory to stop government and industry plans to build several gas and oil pipelines through their territory. These pipelines form part of an energy corridor that will serve to unlock the vast energy reserves of the tar sands and transport fracked gas with disastrous implications for the climate. The camp was established to oppose these projects, to defend the sacred headwaters, the salmon that spawn there and to maintain their autonomy over their unceded lands.
This video, filmed at the camp in 2012, reveals how the Unist’ot'en camp is succeeding in stopping up to 7 pipelines, holding up billions in investment and keeping millions of barrels (and cubic metres) of fossil fuels under the ground. It also show how the camp, beyond being a simple movement of resistance is creating a new intentional community, informed by a millennia old relationship with the territory and natural law, but through a constant process of re-iminagination.
As of Fall 2015, the camp continues on high alert amidst multiple incursions from the companies trying to build the pipelines. Yet while under attack, the camp enjoys wide support and solidarity. As this video highlights, the Unist’ot’en form part of a networked "corridor or resistance” of numerous justice movements who are increasingly willing to take action to oppose extreme energy projects and who are building energy sovereignty from the ground up.
Welcome to the gateway of meaningful decolonization
Corridors of Resistance is an EJOLT Video directed by Leah Temper, edited by Siobhan McKeon and Claudia Medina with camera by Fiona Becker and Leah Temper.

India was the fourth-largest consumer of crude oil and petroleum products in the world in 2013, after the United States, China, and Japan. The country depends heavily on imported crude oil, mostly from the Middle East. The aim of the new government is to source as much domestic production as it can and further bid rounds to attract new investments. There have been significant successes in the past in India by ONGC, GSPC, Reliance and Cairn Energy in finding domestic oil and gas from conventional resources. What else can be done to help fuel India’s demand for new sources of energy? Dr Mike Watts led the exploration efforts of the London listed Cairn Energy PLC for over more than 20 years in South Asia and will share his experiences during this address.
