Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city, it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. Welcome to Oslo, the capital city of Norway.
Centuries ago, Viking longships prowled the waters around Norway. Some of those longships survived the ensuing years and found their way to the Viking Ship Museum, which is a must-see on any Oslo tour. The three longships on display here have been recovered from various parts of the country, and the museum also contains a number of artifacts from the Viking Age. Norway’s rich connection to the sea did not stop with the Vikings, though; just over a mile away from the Viking Ship Museum are several other educational complexes dedicated to the salt water that flows through Oslo’s veins. Visit the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, and the Fram Museum to get a fuller idea of Oslo’s seaborne heritage.
While in town, stop by the Nobel Peace Center—yes, this is the very location where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. The center itself showcases winners of the award, and highlights their impact on the world at large. After spending an afternoon wandering the center, prepare yourself for an evening of extraordinary live performances, as the Oslo Opera House is just a short walk away. This majestic building, with its sloping roofs and massive wall of windows, has been compared to an iceberg in appearance. Besides being a popular performing arts venue, it’s also a popular place for locals to meet before heading out into town.
If you plan your Oslo sightseeing during the summer, prepare yourself for long days of endless sunshine. Oslo’s position in the northern hemisphere ensures that the sun does not set until after 11 o’clock at night during the warm season. Who said you couldn’t get more hours in the day?

The proud spirit of the Norwegian people shines in every dimension of their capital city — from its once-fearsome Viking ships to its sleek new Opera House, from a fun folk museum that keeps traditions alive to the constant festival of its thriving harborfront. Connecting with the culture, we enjoy art — from Vigeland's statues to Munch's scream — and join local friends for a boat ride on their fjord.

I have brought you before a video with the most typical things about Portugal and you really liked it so it only seemed right to make one about the country I'm currently living in: NORWAY! YAY!
I also choose to show you some pictures of my experience here in Norway. All the images in this video are mine.
I love Norway and Norwegians so I really hope that this video do not offend anyone. I'm referring to Norwegians in general and just in a harmless way :)
I would love if you could also share some of the most typical things you found in Norway or in your countries!

You would expect a chef who runs one of the world's top 50 restaurants—serving some of the most meticulously crafted dishes you ever seen—to be very professional, if not uptight. That's not to say that Esben Holmboe Bang of Maaemo isn't professional, but after a night out with him, we can most definitely say he is not uptight.
We start things off at Maaemo for a couple of beers with friends, then head out to Taco Republica for some of the best Mexican food in Oslo—and a ton of mezcal. Next stop is Arakataka for more traditional Norwegian cuisine, followed by No. 19 for cocktails and Norwegian folk metal. We then end the night at home sweet home, Maaemo, for a feast of sheep ribs. Enjoy this very boozy and funny adventure through Oslo.

THINGS TO DO IN OSLO NORWAY VLOG vv More Info Down Here vv
We Explore 11 Cool Things To Do in Oslo in Norway. In this vlog we do a full day of exploring the city of Oslo by foot.
We start off at City Box Hotel and head to StockFleth's Cafe for breakfast where we meet a very miserable Barista. Despite the bad start to the morning we head to Oslo Central Station to buy some picnic lunch for later, see some Scandinavian seagulls and then walk to the Oslo Opera House to take some photos.
Afterwards we go to the Baserene Arches and the Oslo Cathedral to hear the Organ being tuned.
The next step on our journey saw us walking past the Oslo University, we hear some Jazzy tunes while walking to the National Theater and then onward to the royal Palace to hug some trees and have a little picnic.
Then things get a little 'wild' as we take on The Harbour Promenade walk all the way to the Viking museum via the trendy Aker Brygge. We see some really cool ancient boats and tools before coming back to town for a delicious coffee at a Kafe in town.
At the end of it all our feet were saw but we got to experience some really cool things to do in Oslo :-)
If our videos or blog have helped you in any way and you want to 'say thanks'. We have a little thing set up where you can say thank you with coffee and cake. All that caffeine and sugar helps us to keep making these vids for you guys ;-)

Travel video about destination Oslo in Norway.
Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city, it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. The unique capital city of the Vikings is full of both culture and sport, including a royal castle, various museums, ancient churches and world famous sporting events. It has 900 years of history.
The conference rooms of the city's government are decorated with frescos and paintings by Munch, Krogh, Revold and Rolfsen and each year on the 10th of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony takes place.
West of the harbor basin is Aker Brygge, a city quarter that was created on the site of a former shipyard and which features some unusual architecture where glass, metal and red brick dominates as in the style of London's Docklands.
The Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum features the long history of Norwegian navigation. Various figureheads are exhibited and it is no surprise that most of them are female, as seafarers have always chosen to be protected by goddesses! In the Kon-Tiki Museum, the filigree balsa river boat is on display. Thor Heyerdahl sailed across the Pacific for 101 days in the Kon-Tiki, from Peru to Polynesia.
This city is a royal residence and a cultural capital of Europe. It is the oldest of Scandinavia's capital cities and the greenest metropolis on the European continent. A place of joie de vivre, independence and a colorful past!

We arrived in Oslo. The train ride through Norway was beautiful. Let’s go and check into the hostel. We’re in Oslo, one of the most expensive cities in the world. We’re going to start the day by visit the Opera House, and apparently you can walk on top of the roof. We’re on top of the Opera House. I think it’s so cool. The Opera House is right down there. You can walk right on top of the roof and get a great view over Oslo. This must be one of the few opera houses in the world where you’re actually allowed to walk on the roof. I think it’s a really cool idea, and I love the view over here as well. Looking around it looks as though they’ve designed the Opera House to look a bit like an iceberg, which I think really suits Norway, because it’s absolutely freezing today.
We’re at Akershus Fortress. It’s a castle built to protect Oslo. It’s also been used as a prison. It’s really beautiful here, and it’s right in the center of Oslo, so you can walk up the hill and get a great view of the city. Let’s check it out. Could be a beautiful view from here, but of course there’s a cruise ship in the way. We’re down by Aker Brygge, which is down by the harbor. It’s a very popular place for locals to come and hang out. The food here is very expensive though, so we’re going to go somewhere else to find some leisure food. So a great place to get some cheaper food in Oslo is, of course, to go to the supermarket. So we bought some traditional Norwegian—what did we get? Brunost, Brown cheese. I heard about this cheese. Well it tastes pretty interesting. You can have a bite here if you want. Tastes a bit like caramel. It’s not that bad. That’s—I heard about it—nah, that’s wrong. I heard about this cheese before, but—. Have it with some bread. Tastes good that way. Try it with some bread. Tastes better that way. It’s not that bad. It’s really not. It’s because you’re from Sweden. It’s not, it’s not right. Nah, I am not finishing that packet of cheese. That’s so disgusting. Ok well I’ll finish it. I can finish the brunost, and you can have the Norwegian raisin buns ok? And I can finish the caramel cheese for myself. That’s so wrong!
Ok, after lunch, we are now at Vigeland Sculpture Park. It’s a park famous for having 212 bronze statues all representing one theme, human condition. Want to check them out? There’s so many statues depicting so many different emotions, so much nudity. It’s quite overwhelming. I haven’t seen these kind of statues with old people and, you know, sort of—everyone has always been so fit and buff, and the men have been, you know, muscular, and the women have been beautiful and just perfectly shaped, but these are all shapes and sizes. There’s a lot of nudity but you sort of forget that because the emotions are shown so strongly, you know, sorrow and pain. We’ve had a great day in Oslo. Yeah, it’s been fun. Tomorrow, we’re off to Stockholm, Sweden.

Norway is a fascinating land in the extreme north of Europe where both magic and fairytales are very much alive. It has crystal clear lakes and rivers, snow covered mountains, idyllic fishing villages and endless beaches that are only accessible by boat.Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. Oslo is a harbour town that lies well sheltered at the end of a fjord and in the ninth century it was much appreciated by the Vikings who travelled throughout the known world, plundering much of it! Bergen’s main tourist attraction is the Bryggen district that originated in the middle of the fourteenth century when it was heavily influenced by the North German Hanseatic Office. The city not only boasts a fascinating history but also a number of music festivals and it was the birthplace of world famous composer Edvard Grieg. Trondheim is Norway’s historic capital in which the country’s kings have been crowned. The Nidaros Domkirke is the most splendid Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. It was built on the bones of Holy Olav. For several centuries it has been a place of pilgrimage and since the Middle Ages the Norwegian kings were crowned and also entombed within its walls. The small village of Nusfjord is located in front of a captivating backdrop of mountains. Due to its unique location it looks more like a high mountain village than a fishing settlement. It is both an historical as well as a cultural treasure. It is easy to understand why the descendants of the Vikings are so proud of their fascinating home in the extreme north. Norway, a country bursting with breathtaking and untamed beauty!

Personal unions with Denmark from 1397 to 1523 and again from 1536 to 1814 and with Sweden from 1814 to 1905 reduced its influence. After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, the city was moved closer to Akershus Castle during the reign of King Christian IV and renamed Christiania in his honour. It was established as a municipality (formannskapsdistrikt) on 1 January 1838. Following a spelling reform, it was known as Kristiania from 1877 to 1925, when its original Norwegian name was restored.

Oslo - Norway Travel Guide, Tourism, Vacation
Eclectic architecture showing off the legendary Scandinavian flair for design, a buzzing party scene and a wealth of top-class museums and galleries have made Oslo Norway's cultural capital as well as its political one. With its late-night shopping, crowded cafés and restaurants, and theatres playing to full houses, Oslo has a self-assured and vibrant feel perfect for a city break. But don't be fooled by the cosmopolitan atmosphere; Oslo's suburbs are forested, semi-rural gems where hiking, swimming and even skiing are on offer.
One of the best ways to approach Oslo is by sea, with the journey taking you along scenic fjords where fishing boats jostle with cruise liners and luxury yachts. Located at the end of the 110km-long (70 miles) Oslofjord, Norway's municipal hub is one of the few cities where you can sail, ski and skate to your heart's content just a short distance from the city centre. As you float past luscious green islands and towering rocky outcrops, the city unfolds before your eyes - sprawling out from its compact centre around the quays to the forested flanks of the surrounding hills.
Made all the more beautiful by its diversity, Oslo boasts a jumble of modern and ancient buildings that give the city an eclectic feel, with the steel-and-glass Munch Museum giving way to the old-fashioned charms of the City Museum and the craggy medieval walls of the Akershus Fortress, which glowers out over the fjord.
To the north, the heavily wooded Nordmarka district has myriad fishing, blueberry-picking and walking opportunities, and there's a good chance you'll see some of the local wildlife such as lynx, roe deer, beavers and moose while strolling along one of the area's many trails. In the southern borough of Frogner, the Vigelandsparken (Vigeland Sculpture Park) is an unmissable blend of wide open space and the stunning (if surreal) creations of Gustav Vigeland, a modernist sculptor who holds a special place in Norwegian art history.
Equally wonderful is the National Museum, which is home to Norway's most famous painting, The Scream, and the futuristic new Opera House in Bjørvika. Along with the visual arts, cultural life in Oslo is awash with literary gems -- not altogether surprising given that the Norwegian capital is the birthplace of celebrated playwright, Henrik Ibsen. A trip to the spectacular rococo building that houses Norway's National Theatre to see Hedda Gabler in the original language and setting is a treat that's not to be missed.
Evenings in Oslo are characterised by the bustling crowds as the locals apply themselves to enjoyment with as much dedication as they do to business. The capital's thriving restaurant scene has seen it rewarded with four Michelin stars, although (somewhat surprisingly) you don't have to spend a fortune to eat well. The Grünerløkka district is close to the Munch Museum and is teeming with bustling little pavement cafés where you can buy a slap-up supper for reasonable prices. A thriving, truly vibrant city, the cosmopolitan heart of Norway really does have something for everyone.

Oslo Attractions, Museums - Norway Travel Tips
Passes:
Operating on similar lines to the city passes available in the other Scandinavian capitals, the Oslo Pass is good value for tourists. As well as free admission to over 30 museums, the pass offers unlimited local travel on all forms of transport (including the ferries plying the waters between the city and the islands of the Oslofjord), free entrance to Tøyenbadet and Frognerbadet swimming pools and free parking in the municipal car parks. It also gives price reductions on sightseeing trips and numerous other discounts, including for cinemas, restaurants, car hire and souvenir shops. You can buy cards for one, two or three days (concessions are available) at the tourist information office, hotels, Narvesen newsagents and various other outlets.
Akershus Slott and Festning (Akerhus Palace and Fortress)
King Haakon V Magnusson ordered the building of Akershus Slott, in 1299. Although damaged, repaired, fortified and renovated over the centuries, the ancient walls and central medieval tower of this imposing fortified palace still dominate the seafront. The town was rebuilt within the fortress walls after the great fire of 1624. The 17th-century renovations of the castle, with magnificent banqueting halls and reception rooms, stand above dank medieval dungeons and underground passageways. The grounds also house the Norges Hjemmefrontsmuseum (Resistance Museum), with its poignant exhibits dating from the Nazi occupation of Norway.
Opening Times: Mon-Sat 1000-1600, Sun 1230-1600 (May-Aug); Sat-Sun 1200-1700, Mon-Fri closed (Sep-Dec). Guided tours of the Festning are available daily (Jun-Aug).
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Akershuskaien, Oslo, Norway
Frognerbadet
Next to the wonderful Vigeland Sculpture Park, the open-air swimming pool complex of Frognerbadet is one of the most popular summer spots in the city. With three open-air pools, including a diving pool, water slides and separate adult and children sections, the entire city seems to pack into the complex at weekends, although many Norwegians make the most of the glorious summer days, with everyone from families to groups of friends converging on the pools every single day of the week. The weekend often sees long queues so a morning visit is recommended. Frognerbadet is well equipped with changing rooms, toilets and a cafeteria.
Opening Times: Mon-Fri 0700-1930, Sat-Sun 1000-1800 (mid-May-Aug).
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: No
Unesco: No
Address: Middelthuns gate 28, Oslo, Norway
Munch Museet (Munch Museum)
The Munch Museum, to the east of the city centre, lies in the broad parklands of Tøyenhagen, close to the museums of the Bygdøy peninsula. The National Gallery might have Munch's best-known work, but the Munch Museum has some real gems, including Summer Night/The Voice and his 1902 Madonna. The museum hit the headlines in 2004 when two of the most famous works were stolen, but has stepped up security since then. The museum also hosts an ever-changing roster of exhibitions giving an insight into different aspects of Munch's oeuvre.
Opening Times: Daily 1000-1800 (Jun-Aug); Tues-Wed and Fri-Sat 1000-1600, Thurs 1000-2000, Sun 1000-1700, closed Mon (Sep-May).
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Tøyengaten 53, Oslo, Norway
Vigeland Sculpture Park
Unusual, unique and occasionally spooky, the Vigeland Sculpture Park is home to over 200 bronze, granite and cast iron sculptures by 20th-century artist Gustav Vigeland who was also responsible for the design of the park itself, and the stunning stained-glass windows of the cathedral. Located in the southern borough of Frogner, the sculpture park is one of Norway's most visited attractions with over 1 million visitors each year, although thanks to its large acreage, it never feels crowded.
Opening Times: Daily 24 hours.
Admission Fees: No
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: Frognerparken, Oslo, Norway

Oslo's Opera House is located right at the harbour, with an angled, white exterior that appears to rise from the water. It invites its visitors to climb its roof and enjoy panoramic views of Oslo and the fjord, all year round.
Large-scale windows at street level provide the public with glimpses of rehearsals and workshop activities. The building's interior is mainly oak, and the main hall is shaped like a horseshoe, reminiscent of classical theatres of the past. The opera is designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, and has received several prestigious awards.
The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet offers a rich and varied programme from three stages: The Main House (1369 seats), Second House (400 seats) and the Studio (200 seats). The Opera roof and foyer are also used for concerts.
Guided tours available in Norwegian and English.

Akershus Fortress, located in the city centre by the Oslo Fjord, is a great place to discover Oslo's history and enjoy a summer day.
The building of Akershus Castle and Fortress was commenced in 1299 under king Håkon V. The medieval castle, which was completed in the 1300s, had a strategical location at the very end of the headland, and withstood a number of sieges throughout the ages. King Christian IV (1588-1648) had the castle modernised and converted into a Renaisssance castle and royal residence.
Guided tours of the Fortress are available to the public in summer, starting at the Visitor Centre. Guided tours for groups are also available.
The Fortress area is a popular venue for major events, including concerts, holiday celebrations and ceremonies.

The tiger in front of Oslo Central Station is one of Oslo's most photographed "inhabitants". When Oslo celebrated its 1000-year anniversary in 2000, Eiendomsspar wanted to give the city a gift. Oslo wanted a tiger, and that's what they got: a 4.5 meter long bronze tiger.
The statue, made by Elena Engelsen, is one of the first things that meets a tourist arriving at Oslo Central Station.
Why a tiger?
The reason Oslo wanted a tiger, is the city's nickname Tigerstaden ("the tiger city"), which most Norwegians are familiar with. The name was probably first used by Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. His poem "Sidste Sang" from 1870 describes a fight between a horse and a tiger; the tiger representing the dangerous city and the horse the safe countryside.
Since the, Oslo has been known as the Tiger City, but these days it is not necessarily meant as a negative thing. The Tiger City can be an exciting and happening place rather than dangerous. -

Norwegian name: Akershus festning

Transport in Oslo - Norway
Public transport:
Oslo has a comprehensive and efficient public transport network of trains, buses, trams, ferries and underground (T-Bane), mostly operated by Oslo Sporveier. You can buy single-trip tickets, day passes and eight-day transferable passes from ticket offices across the city, as well as the Oslo Pass, which includes access to all public transport, apart from late-night buses and trams. The Oslo Pass also allows you free access to more than 30 attractions, free guided walking tours and generous discounts elsewhere.
In general, tickets aren't especially cheap, but fines for travelling without a ticket are even steeper, so don't be tempted to go without. Some 50 separate bus lines and eight different tram lines cover the city. You can board these opposite Oslo S station on Jerbanetorget, with tickets available from the driver. The Oslo T-Bane consists of five underground lines.
Båtservice Sightseeing A/S operates seasonal ferries (April to October) from City Hall to Bygdøy Island, where many museums are situated. Other small ferries operate from Vippetangen, just behind Akershus Slott, to all the harbour basin islands.
For more information on all public transport in and around Oslo visit Trafikanten, Jerbanetorget 1, located in front of the Central station.
Taxis:
You can find taxi ranks throughout the city, mainly near the shopping centre, city squares and outside Oslo S station. Oslo has four car taxi lines: City Taxi (tel: 02322), Norgestaxi AS (tel: 08000), Oslo Taxi (tel: 02323) and Taxi 2 (tel: 02202). The city also has two helicopter taxi services, Heliwing (tel: 9809 5000) and Nor Aviation (tel: 6495 6495); one seaplane taxi, Fonnafly (tel: 6710 5050); and one boat, Fjord taxi (tel: 9004 0999), which you can also charter for private trips on the fjord.
Driving:
Driving in Oslo is fairly straightforward. However, the city is relatively small and has an excellent public transport system, so a car is unnecessary unless you're planning longer trips. Rush hour (0700 to 0900 and 1500 to 1800) is best avoided, and navigating your way round can be difficult, as there is a complicated one-way system.
Another plus point for public transport is that parking is a nightmare in Oslo, and prices can be steep. Payment is usually required Monday to Friday 0800-1700, and until 1500 on Saturday. Municipal parking spots are free to Oslo Pass holders. There are daytime car parks at C J Hambros Plass, Prinsens gate, Christian Krohgsgate, Oslo Plaza, Asker Stasjon and Skøyen Stasjon.
Car hire:
The major car hire providers are Avis, Munkedamsveien, Budget, Munkedamsveien , and Hertz, Holbergsgate. The minimum age for hiring a car is 21 years and a credit card will be required as security. The driver must have a national driving licence (in Roman script), which he/she has held for a minimum of one year. Insurance is mandatory and tends to be included in the cost of the hire.
Bicycle hire:
You can pick up Oslo city bikes from over 100 locations in and around the city centre and these are available from 0600 to 2400 every day. Oslo Bysykkel works on a pre-paid smartcard system, and you can rent cards at the tourist information offices for 24 hours. It's worth bearing in mind that you can only rent a maximum of two smartcards per credit card (not helpful if you're travelling in a big group) and if you lose the card, you can expect a hefty fine. See the Oslo Bysykkel website for more information.

Talk 1: Modernizing SOL.no
Speaker: Eirik Vullum
At Scandinavia Online we’ve spent the last couple of months modernizing our core product platform.
In this talk we’ll look at how we’ve tried to optimize for constant change and the different wins and fails along the way. Touching topics like universal rendering, how we handle state with Redux, asynchronous chunking with Webpack and the ever elusive dream of self contained components and styles.
Bio: Eirik Vullum is a JavaScript fanatic and Tech Lead at Scandinavia Online.
---
Talk 2: The Reification Retaliation
Speaker: John Maxwell
Building web applications is all wrong - the focus has been shifted too far toward implementation and our products and happiness are suffering. I'm going to talk about how we can alter our thinking to become better product developers and in rejecting the dogma enjoy our coding much more.
What? Why?
Sadly are two questions we don't really explore compared to how - just look at the endless discussions around testing and design patterns. We spend too much time focusing on things that don't differentiate our products or enrich us as developers.
Are you going to fix it for me?
I'll try - although that's a lot to ask. What I will do is talk about the changes that we have made to shift our thinking back to product and how they've affected what we do. If they can work for you then I'm delighted, and if you disagree then I'm ready to discuss!
Bio: John has worked as a developer for the last 10 years, taking a leisurely trip through different languages before realising that ultimately it's the outcome that matters not the tools you pick. Working as Head of Product at Music Glue, a direct-to-fan e-commerce platform, he splits his time between planning the future of the platform and writing code - mostly these days a combination of React and GraphQL.

Talk 3: Testing ES6 + React + Reflux + Freezerjs stack with Mocha test framework
Speaker: Zakhar Shapurau
At Xeneta we are writing a frontend app using React, Reflux and Freezerjs as a base stack. We migrated large part of code into ES6, and are writing all new code in it.
Testing of this stack is not straightforward. ES6 has to be compiled into javascript, DOM has to be emulated in some way, and many small problems stand in the way when you start writing actual tests, especially for bigger components.
In this talk I am going to give quick overview of the stack, and explain how we solved testing problems and gotchas.
Bio: Zakhar Shapurau is a frontend developer at Xeneta.

1080p HD!
On-board this British Airways A319 flight BA764 from London Heathrow (T5) to Oslo Gardermoen on a very hot Thursday morning on August 1st 2013. Heathrow was one of the hottest places recorded this day in all of Britain, seeing temperatures topping 34 degrees! Nice weather at both ends, just a little more cloud and about 11 degrees cooler in Oslo, but still nice and warm!
FLIGHT DETAILS:
Aircraft: Airbus A319-131
Reg: G-EUPV
Seat: 4A
Engine Type: IAE V2500
Departure Time: 11:20
Departure Runway: RWY09R
Arrival Runway: RWY19L
Flight Duration: 1 hour 50mins (approx.)
Cruising Alt: 37,000ft (FL370)
Route: LHR-OSL
Some great views after departure of Wembley stadium and I managed to spot some railway features.
Not a bad flight. Great seat because seat 4B wasn't really a proper seat, so no-one sat directly next to me!
Check out my return flight video on the Norwegian 787-8 Dreamliner, that was the only reason for this trip!

The video begins at the gate in the non-Schengen area of Oslo Airport, before we board the aircraft and take our seat in the back row, seat 22F. It isn't long before we pushback and taxi to runway 01R, before taking off making a sharp right turn before we even get to the end of the runway!
Our route then takes us along the south coast of Norway, before heading off across the North Sea, turning right off the east coast of the UK to make a beautiful scenic approach across London for Heathrow's runway 27R. After landing we taxi into Terminal 2 and disembark using the forward doors into the terminal.
Video take from seat 22F.
