Those whose lives have been uprooted and torn apart by conflict or natural disaster, UNHCR exists to help them. This is our story.
The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The Second World War left over one million refugees far from home and governments in need of assistance to coordinate the crisis. UNHCR was created to help. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries.

And we've seen many like him carrying their animals with them on the long journey from Syria, across the Mediterranean Sea and through Europe. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as The UN Refugee Agency is a United Nations agency mandated to protect and support refugees at the request of a government or the UN itself and assists in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland and is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The UNHCR has won two Nobel Peace Prizes, once in 1954 and again in 1981.
Following the demise of the League of Nations and the formation of the United Nations, the international community were acutely aware of the refugee crisis following the end of World War II. In 1947, the International Refugee Organization(IRO) was founded by the United Nations. The IRO was the first international agency to deal comprehensively with all aspects pertaining to refugees' lives. Preceding this was the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, which was established in 1944 to address the millions of people displaced through Europe as a result of World War II.

Maher Zain (Arabic: ماهر زين ; born March 16, 1981 in Tripoli, Lebanon) is a Muslim Swedish R&B singer, songwriter and music producer of Lebanese origin. His debut album Thank You Allah, an internationally successful album with strong Muslim religious influences, was released in 2009. He released his follow-up album Forgive Me on April 2, 2012.
Maher Zain and his family moved to Sweden when he was eight years old. He completed his schooling there gaining a Bachelors degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After university he entered the music industry in Sweden and linked up with RedOne, the Moroccan-born Swedish producer.
When RedOne moved to New York in 2006 Maher Zain followed soon after to continue his music industry career in the USA producing for artists such as Kat DeLuna. On a visit home to Sweden he became engaged once more with his Islamic faith and decided to move away from a career as a music producer to become a singer/songwriter of contemporary R&B music with a strong Muslim religious influence.

The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries.

“We watch the news about Syria and the situation is bleak. In May when I travelled to Jordan with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and visited Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps with fashion designer Georgina Chapman and her husband, film producer, Harvey Weinstein, the scale of the refugee situation was extraordinary to us. Conflict was forcing innocent people in love with their country to abandon their homes and bleed, in their thousands, across its borders. How are they able to cope with losing everything? How are the neighbouring countries expected to cope with the flood of human beings overwhelming their infrastructure and their already scarce resources?
6 months on and the numbers of refugees and internally displaced have climbed, not inch by inch, but in dizzying numbers: over 6.4 million people displaced inside Syria, over 3 million refugees outside Syria. Spirits have been broken, homes wrecked, lives destroyed, and a generation of children traumatized.
But somehow, still, in amongst the horror and the nightmares, there are still many small and glorious stories of survival and hope, resilience and dignity. I have already shared many of them with you, but there are more to tell. I'm sharing them in order to build a connection between the people I have met – Ayman, Ibrahim, Um Murad and the rest - and with you. Yes, you. This film illustrates the circumstances that lead many people in this region and beyond to become stateless, and invites Governments to improve their laws on nationality. Stateless people do not have a nationality and are not recognized as citizens by any State under the operation of its law.
This situation has a negative impact on people's lives because possessing a nationality is very often a prerequisite for the enjoyment of all other human rights, including access to education, healthcare and legal services.

This is Turkey's biggest and newest camp for Syrian refugees - Suruc camp in southern Turkey will provide shelter for 35,000 people when fully populated.
New arrivals come from across Syria, but many are from the town of Kobani, just across the border. Once Suruc camp is full, Turkey will be providing shelter to over 260,000 Syrians in camps, as part of some 1.7 million refugees across the country.
After registration, and being allocated a tent, refugees receive blankets, heaters and clothes.
