Did you know about the complexities of multilingualism in Malta? English, Maltese and even Italian are all used to communicate with other islanders. There have been significant changes in the status of the Maltese language since Malta joined the EU: "We didn't have a culture of translation. The fact that Maltese is an official language [of the EU] has created something which actually didn't happen before. I think it has given Maltese more status in peoples' minds. It is no longer the language of the poor and uneducated. I think the ideal for a country like Malta, which is tiny, is that our heritage should be a heritage of bilingualism. We should be giving our children a possibility of growing up with a minimum of two languages, which for us was always a reality," explains Dr Sandra Vella, senior lecturer at the Institute of Linguistics, University of Malta. To find out more, watch our interview with Dr Vella and Professor Ray Fabri, Chairman of the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Malta.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Malta.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Malta is an entirely forest-free zone. While it showcases some great architecture and natural sights, you won’t find a single forest in Malta. There are also no mountains or rivers across all seven islands. Although there are some small rivers at times of high rainfall, there are no permanent rivers or lakes on Malta.
2. Thinking about what to do in Malta? Well, it’s home to Popeye’s Village. Originally built for the Popeye movie released in 1980, Sweethaven (AKA “Popeye’s Village”) was left standing and now serves as a tourist attraction featuring boat rides, water trampolines, costumed characters and more.
3. Calypso’s Cave is thought to be the cave featured in The Odyssey. It’s estimated that Homer wrote The Odyssey somewhere between 750 – 650 B.C., or roughly 2,700 years ago. The cave itself isn't all that great, but the views of the nearby beach are.
4. Maltese (or Malti) is the official language of Malta, as is English (a remnant from previous British rule). The Maltese language is the only Semitic language written in Latin script. The language has a heavy Arabic influence and also features words adopted from both Italian and English.
5. Valletta, the capital of Malta, is one of the most concentrated historical areas in the world, according to UNESCO, with 320 monuments in the city, all contained within a 55 hectare area.
6. The earliest evidence of human settlement in Malta dates back over 7,400 years and the Megalithic temples are the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, built in 3600 B.C.
7. Malta is the navel of the Mediterranean, floating in the sea between Sicily and Libya. An ancient temple-building civilization, later Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Norman, and Aragonese occupations all made some mark on Maltese culture and left an impressive collection of UNESCO-anointed sites. Then came the Order of the Knights of St John took control of the islands, followed by Napoleon’s France and finally the Brittish Empire, until gaining independence in 1964.
