Gillespie Point: One of The very best vistas in Pennsylvania
Gillespie Point is an anomaly within the Allegheny Plateau section of northern Pennsylvania. Its unusual shape, compared to the long, flat ridges that characterize northern Pennsylvania, makes it stand out in the skyline while in the vicinity of the peak. Gillespie Point is shaped almost as a real mountain peak, especially when viewed from the south, because of the triangular shape it holds. Even

Susquehanna River's source is Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, New York. Once in Pennsylvania, the river cuts through the Endless Mountains in the Allegheny Plateau, flowing through the former anthracite industrial heartland of the mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania: past Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke, Berwick, Bloomsburg, and Danville. Past Selinsgrove, home of Susquehanna University, the Susquehanna River becomes nearly a mile wide as it passes through the capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. Downriver it forms the border between York and Lancaster counties, then crosses into Maryland. Finally the mighty Susquehanna reaches its mouth at Havre de Grace on the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay, where Concord Point Light was built in 1827. The watershed includes portions of the Allegheny Plateau region of the Appalachian Mountains, cutting through many water gaps in the mountain ridges, the last water gap going through Blue Mountain above Harrisburg. Over two hundred bridges cross the river along its 444 mile length.

The Allegheny also spelled Alleghany, Allegany and, informally, the Alleghenies — is part of the vast Appalachian Mountain Range of the eastern United States and Canada. It has a northeast-southwest orientation and runs for about 400 miles (640 km) from north-central Pennsylvania, through western Maryland and eastern West Virginia, to southwestern Virginia.
The Alleghenies comprise the rugged western-central portion of the Appalachians. They rise to approximately 4,862 feet (1,483 m) in northeastern West Virginia. In the east, they are dominated by a high, steep escarpment known as the Allegheny Front. In the west, they grade down into the closely associated Allegheny Plateau which extends into Ohio and Kentucky.

-The city is on the Allegheny Plateau, where the confluence of the Allegheny River from the northeast and Monongahela River from the southeast form the Ohio River. The Downtown area between the rivers is known as the Golden Triangle, and the site at the actual convergence, which is occupied by Point State Park, is referred to simply as "the Point." In addition to the downtown Golden Triangle, the city extends northeast to include the Oakland and Shadyside sections, which are home to the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Museum and Library, and many other educational, medical, and cultural institutions.
Pittsburgh occupies the slopes of the river valley on the opposite side of the Monongahela and the ridges beyond. Many of the city's neighborhoods, particularly the city's North Side and those areas south of the Monongahela, are steeply sloped. In fact, of all U.S. cities, only San Francisco and Seattle have more extreme terrain.

This DVD is about trapping coyotes in the woods of the Allegheny Plateau. I trap in the forests of Pennsylvania, where the terrain is hilly and covered with trails and roads. These tactics will work for you anywhere you find snow, coyotes and woods. You will not see dirt, but all snow sets. I catch many coyotes in the winter and get several questions about my winter trapping techniques. Unlike my winter DVD where I show you about keeping a trap working, this DVD will teach you how to trap and use sets effectively in the snow. I cover many sets, use drags, and catch a bunch of woods coyotes that fall into the tricks of the trade. Clear, entertaining and informative, this 2-hour, high-quality DVD features many catches. Come along on my trapline again for exciting new catches, where I'll share my secrets of becoming a successful snow trapper. Great trapping! Darin

Even on a topographic map this point looks like an oddity when examined with the surrounding broad, flat-topped hillsides in the region. Gillespie forms a broad base to the mountain and then narrows toward the top of the point, coming to an almost perfect peak structure that one would see in Colorado. The mountain has even been nicknamed the “Matterhorn of Pennsylvania" (or the Matterhorn of the Alleghenies). Its elevation is comparable to surrounding mountaintops of Pennsylvania, but is considerably low when measured up to any famous mountain peaks of the eastern United States. However, it does have a mountaintop-like summit, due to the bare and exposed rock on top that gives view to the Pine Creek Gorge, the village of Blackwell, the Babb Creek valley, and the neighboring plateau mountains. In fact, one can view the lowest point of Tioga County, (the county in which Gillespie point resides) where Pine Creek flows into Lycoming County and the highest point in Tioga County, Cedar Mountain, to the northwest and across the Pine Creek Gorge.

Harry F. Ferguson joined fellow Geo-Pioneer Shailer Philbrick, both Honorary Members of AEG, when Ferguson returned to Pittsburgh in 1956 for a position with the Pittsburgh District, Army Corps of Engineers. Geological observations made during numerous excavations for dam foundations throughout the Allegheny plateau, led to Harry’s pioneering work on valley stress release. Harry was born June 11, 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA. Following high school, Harry worked in a steel mill until he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. Like many of his contemporaries, Harry attended college on the GI Bill, and received a BS in Geology from the University of Pittsburgh.

The deeply dissected topography and diverse climate of the Eastern Allegheny Plateau and Mountains (MLRA 127) create challenges for dynamic ecological and pedogenic modeling, including soil organic carbon (SOC). This is one of the most dynamic and important soil properties and has been previously modeled using State Soil Geographic (STATSGO2) and Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) databases, estimating mean SOC to a depth of 1 m to be 2.6 and 4.4 kg m-2, respectively. These estimates have been shown to be low due to unpopulated organic horizons and inconsistencies within the databases. A geographically weighted regression kriging (GWRK) model combining soil legacy data with quantifiable soil forming factors was created. The SOC variation captured within soil map units will support Ecological Site Description (ESD) development, Soil Data Join Recorrelation (SDJR) efforts, and forest restoration efforts. Specifically for forest restoration efforts in the MNF, it is hypothesized that the GWRK SOC model could be used to differentiate historic hardwood and red spruce ecosystems.

50 States Album: A 50-song album covering the basic history, geography, and economic structure of each state in the U.S.
http://lodgemccammon.com/
Lyrics and Explanation -
Verse 1:
Of the original 13, it's the one that didn't touch the sea
That was given away by Charles II to repay a debt of loyalty
But oh William Penn was embarrassed and did contend
Stating "people will think I named it after me"
Explanation of Verse 1:
Pennsylvania was one of the 13 original colonies and is the only one not touching the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1681 King Charles II granted a land charter to William Penn to repay a debt owed to William's father. Charles II called the land charter "Pennsylvania." William was embarrassed, worried that people would think that he named it after himself. He would have rather called it "New Wales" or "Sylvania." Charles II refused to change the name of the charter.
Chorus:
That Commonwealth of old Pennsylvania
Cradle of the revolution in the Keystone state
Liberty from Philadelphia any day now
Declare independence and a constitutional debate
Explanation of the Chorus:
Pennsylvania is officially called "The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."
Pennsylvania is many times referred to as the Keystone State - due to the central role it played both politically and economically throughout American history.
Pennsylvania was where the founding fathers wrote both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution both in Philadelphia which could be called the cradle of the American revolution.
Verse 2:
The eastern border is 57 miles along the Delaware River
Go west you'll find in Harrisburg they like the Susquehanna much better
'Oer the ridges and valleys of the Appalachians to the Allegheny Plateau
Thinkin' south along the Mason-Dixon is the way to go
Explanation of Verse 2:
The eastern border of Pennsylvania is along the Delaware River, separating it from Delaware.
If you travel west into the state, not quite to the middle, you will arrive in Harrisburg, the capital. Harrisburg is on the Susquehanna River.
If you keep traveling west, you will cross the ridge and valley region of the Appalachian Mountains and you will eventually end up in the north/west region of state called the Allegheny Plateau.
The entire southern border of Pennsylvania is defined by the Mason-Dixon line.
Bridge:
There's mountain laurel under a branch of Eastern Hemlock
Whispering "virtue, liberty and independence"
"virtue, liberty and independence"
There's ruffed grouse that spreads its wings and flies away
Spreading, spreading virtue, liberty and independence
virtue, liberty and independence
Explanation of the Bridge:
State flower: Mountain Laurel
State tree: Eastern Hemlock
State motto: "Virtue, Liberty & Independence"
State bird: Ruffed Grouse
Verse 3:
Erie, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Scranton
Define the four corners of PA manufacturing
Help build relations with the North
While fertile soil and Agriculture opened all the southern doors
Gave way to national banks, an innovative state for sure
Explanation of Verse 3:
The four corners of Pennsylvania are the four cities known for manufacturing. Erie (north/west), Pittsburgh (south/west), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (north/east), and Philadelphia (south/east). These areas are known for industries such as steel, glass and chemicals.
In the early years of the country, the focus on industry and manufacturing helped strengthen the bond with the northern states.
Pennsylvania is also known for agriculture. They have been a major provider of crops such as mushrooms, apples, and trees.
In the early years of the country, this focus on agriculture helped strengthen the bond with the southern states.
Since they were a leader in both manufacturing and agriculture, it makes sense that they were also an innovative state when it came to commerce. Pennsylvania started the first nationally chartered bank to help state-state transactions and the growth of national wealth.

The park was created from land within the Susquehannock State Forest, and is on Pennsylvania Route 44 in West Branch Township. Cherry Springs, named for a large stand of Black Cherry trees in the park, is atop the dissected Allegheny Plateau at an elevation of 2,300 feet (701 m). It is popular with astronomers and stargazers for having "some of the darkest night skies on the east coast" of the United States, and was chosen by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of Parks as one of "Twenty Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks".
The earliest recorded inhabitants of the area were the Susquehannocks, followed by the Seneca nation, who hunted there. The first settlement within the park was a log tavern built in 1818 along a trail; the trail became a turnpike by 1834 and a hotel replaced the tavern in 1874, then burned in 1897. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the old-growth forests were clearcut; the state forest was established in 1901 and contains second growth woodlands. "Cherry Springs Scenic Drive" was established in 1922, and the Civilian Conservation Corps built much of Cherry Springs State Park during the Great Depression, including a picnic pavilion listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). An annual "Woodsmen's Show" has been held in the park each August since 1952.

Incredible Discoveries about the Great Serpent Mound in Ohio

Ross Hamilton has made some incredible discoveries about the Great Serpent Mount in Ohio. This ancient Native America earthwork has got a real mystery to reveal. How does the constellation Draco figure into the story, and who, truly, does the serpent represent? Listen as Whitley finds out the answer. Then Linda Howe explores a much more modern mystery: what are those, hard-packed soils scientists see in the recent Mars lander photos?
The Great Serpent Mound is a 1,348-foot (411 m)-long, three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound located on a plateau of the Serpent Mound crater along Ohio Brush Creek in Adams County, Ohio. Maintained within a park by the Ohio Historical Society, it has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of Interior. The Serpent Mound of Ohio was first reported from surveys by Ephraim Squire and Edwin Davis in their historic volume Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, published in 1848 by the newly founded Smithsonian Museum.
Researchers have attributed construction of the mound to three different prehistoric indigenous cultures. Although it was once thought to be Adena in origin, now based on the use of more advanced technology, including carbon dating and evidence from 1996 studies, many scholars now believe that members of the Fort Ancient culture built it about 1070 CE (plus or minus 70 years). There are still anomalies to be studied. Serpent Mound is the largest serpent effigy in the world.
The dating of the design, the original construction, and the identity of the builders of the serpent effigy are three questions still debated in the disciplines of social science, including ethnology, archaeology, and anthropology. In addition, contemporary American Indians have an interest in the site. Several attributions have been entered by academic, philosophic, and Native American concerns regarding all three of these unknown factors of when designed, when built, and by whom.
Over the years, scholars have proposed that the mound was built by members of the Adena culture, the Hopewell culture, or the Fort Ancient culture. In the 18th century the missionary John Heckewelder reported that Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape (later Delaware) nation told him the Allegheny people had built the mound, as they lived in the Ohio Valley in an ancient time. Both Lenape and Iroquois legends tell of the Allegheny or Allegewi People, sometimes called Tallegewi. They were said to have lived in the Ohio Valley in a remotely ancient period, believed pre-Adena, i.e., Archaic or pre-Woodland period (before 1200 BCE). Because archaeological evidence suggests that ancient cultures were distinct and separate from more recent historic Native American cultures, academic accounts do not propose the Allegheny Nation built the Serpent Mound.
Recently the dating of the site has been brought into question. While it has long been thought to be an Adena site based on slim evidence, a couple of radiocarbon dates from a small excavation raise the possibility that the mound is no more than a thousand years old. Middle Ohio Valley people of the time were not known for building large earthworks, however; they did display a high regard for snakes as shown by the numerous copper serpentine pieces associated with them.
Radiocarbon dating of charcoal discovered within the mound in the 1990s indicated that people worked on the mound circa 1070 CE.

The Serpent Mound may have been designed in accord with the pattern of stars composing the constellation Draco. The star pattern of the constellation Draco fits with fair precision to the Serpent Mound, with the ancient Pole Star, Thuban (α Draconis), at its geographical center within the first of seven coils from the head. The fact that the body of Serpent Mound follows the pattern of Draco may support various theses. Putnam's 1865 refurbishment of the earthwork could have been correctly accomplished in that a comparison of Romain's or Fletcher and Cameron's maps from the 1980s show how the margins of the Serpent align with great accuracy to a large portion of Draco. Some researchers date the earthwork to around 5,000 years ago, based on the position of Draco, through the backward motion of precessionary circle of the ecliptic when Thuban was the Pole Star. Alignment of the effigy to the Pole Star at that position also shows how true north may have been found. This was not known until 1987 because lodestone and modern compasses give incorrect readings at the site. .

Some bicycling sped up to 4x with an entire Metallica soundtrack. I have seen many Great Allegheny passage bicycle videos of 40 miles or even 320 miles but they always edit the video. This is the raw video, boring to watch for an hour but kinda fun to jump around in.
Filmed in 720P on the Go-Pro HD Silver. I would have did 1080P but I have found when you speed it up it makes little difference in the quality.

The Dolly Sods Wilderness — originally simply Dolly Sods — is a U.S. Wilderness Area in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia, USA, and is part of the Monongahela National Forest of the U.S. Forest Service.
Dolly Sods is a rocky, high-altitude plateau with sweeping vistas and lifeforms normally found much farther north in Canada. To the north, the distinctive landscape of "the Sods" is characterized by stunted trees, wind-carved boulders, heath barrens, grassy meadows created in the last century by logging and fires, and sphagnum bogs that are much older. To the south, a dense cove forest occupies the branched canyon excavated by the North Fork of Red Creek.

The Mekong Delta is the bottom half of Vietnam's two rice baskets (the other being the Red River Delta in the North). This vast delta is formed by the deposition of the multiple tentacles and tributaries of the mighty Mekong River which has its origin in the Tibetan highland plateau 2,800 miles away. From its source, the river makes its way through China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam before flowing out into the South China Sea.

Lastly back to the Lunch Loop System in Grand Junction, showing a small portion of the "Ribbon" in the snow.

Two major political goals are animating change in China’s energy sector: the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions on or before 2030 as part of China’s international climate commitment and the drive for energy market and pricing reform. Yet energy sector reform and climate policy in China are operating on two separate tracks. This event will explore changes to China’s energy sector from the perspective of both energy market reform and climate policy, examining what action China will need to take to meet its climate targets in the electricity sector and in the broader energy market. Finally, the discussion will place these two issues in the broader context of Chinese politics and domestic economic reforms.
The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host Frederick Weston, Principal and China Program Director with the Regulatory Assistance Project, Trevor Houser, Partner with the Rhodium Group, and Chris Johnson, Senior Adviser and Freeman Chair in China Studies with CSIS to discuss the challenges and opportunities arising out of the interplay between China’s energy sector and climate goals. Jane Nakano, Senior Fellow with the CSIS Energy and National Security Program, will moderate.

This is a trip video from a three day backpacking trip I did in Yellowstone. I hitchhiked from the South Entrance up to the Heart Lake Trailhead, where I hiked in to the lake. From Heart Lake I headed south to the Snake River, which I forded twice before reaching my vehicle parked at the South Entrance.
