Winchester SX3; fastest gun in the west! Weeheehoo Going on a rabbit hunt! Alright guys, today we're out in Tooele county, this is off of Black Rock Canyon road. This is out towards Faust, Utah. Just walking some sagebrush. We got the GoPro sportman's mount on there so we're gonna get some down the barrel camera action, and if you can't hear how crunchy the ground is, even for the desert it is dry! Alright, get an extra camera angle here, about 60 yards away you can just barely see him running... and boom the dynamite! Alright, made a good shot on him, rolled him, and it's a good thing when you are able to hit an animal really solid like that because it's satisfying to know that you dispatched the animal quickly and humanely and really practicing your marksmanship skills by either shooting at clay pigeons or just really knowing your weapon will help you be a more ethical hunter. Being able to make cleaner kills more often. This is the SX3. It's a semi-automatic 12 gauge, it is a kick butt gun! It's so much fun to shoot. A light weight, low recoil and I opted for the wood stock just cause I think it's pretty and I want to be able to pass it down. Pretty gun and it rolls the bunnies just fine. Alright, remember guys pick up your shells after you're done. Of course your first priority is to make sure you harvest the animal and dispatch it as quickly and respectfully as possible, but afterwards take a few minutes and go pick up your shells. Keep nature looking good and if you'd like to know how to field dress a rabbit or other small game click the link! See I actually pierced this guys ears, that's how far the shot had spread out. So I'm not like most people, I'll keep all the jack rabbits that I kill. Some people say, "Aw, well they're all disease, they're all terrible, they'll kill ya!" Well, if you think about it, as far as the biology is concerned, cotton tails have a higher occurrence of tularemia, which is that nasty bacteria everyone's worried about, than jack rabbits because they live in dens in close proximity with one another where as the jack rabbits are more free range. So, really the cotton tails you're more likely to get sick and if you like, basically, a brush buck mule deer that lives in the desert, think that tastes fine, it's pretty much exactly what the jack rabbits taste like, eat the same stuff, and as we well know we are what we eat! (Perhaps I'm furry do to my good diet of Jack Rabbits!?)

February is cold in Utah, however, cabin fever was just waiting for a sunny day. We finally got a good day and headed out to the remote Dugway Range. With our expert guide and mining expert, Ed Gosling, we were off for an informative and fun day. If you visit these sites, please be respectful and leave everything as you find it. This includes relics and any artifacts you may come across; the Antiquities Act of 1906 makes it a federal crime to move or disturb any relics or artifacts that could be of historical significance. Since 2004, Gold Rush Expeditions has been working to save these historic sites as a part of Utahs heritage. Unfortunately, the state is against us, Utahs Governor, John Huntsman, Jr. does not think these sites deserve saving. His office has been contacted numerous times and still the destruction continues. Additionally, the BLM, and the Office of Surface Mining has disregarded our arguments. 25 people were injured, 1 man is dead after a red passenger car slammed into the semi that slowed down because of the visibility. Then a silver passenger vehicle slammed into the red car. Then another semi hit those two passenger vehicles killing the man in the silver vehicle.
Strong winds caused the white out conditions from dust and wet sand blowing across the highway I-80 at mile marker 62 Tuesday morning. (4/14/15)
I-80 west bound was reopened 8 hours later and this is what I seen after it opened back up.

TOOELE COUNTY, Utah -- Authorities responded to a three-vehicle accident in Tooele County Sunday, and three people were killed and another six were injured.
Reports of the accident began to come in about 3:15 p.m., and the accident occurred along State Route 36 near the interchange with State Route 38 in Tooele County.
There were eleven people total among the three vehicles, and officers confirmed that three people had been killed and six were being treated for injuries. A total of three medical helicopters responded to the scene, along with EMS personnel.
Evan Kirby of the Utah Highway Patrol said people stepped up to help at the scene.
"There were so many patients," he said. "We had a lot of members of the community out helping with the children, and that was greatly appreciated by us."
The accident is under investigation, but according to information from the Utah Department of Public Safety, it appears a minivan traveling northbound on S.R. 36 attempted to change lanes, and it struck an SUV. The impact sent the minivan across the median into a southbound lane, and a Subaru traveling southbound struck the minivan.
Both occupants in the Subaru were killed. They have been identified as Melodie Clement, 58, and Urban "James" Montoya, 61, from Salt Lake City. Officers said they were both wearing their seat belts.
The front passenger in the minivan was also killed. She has been identified as Donnett McCollin, 43, from Dugway.
Four young adults were thrown from the minivan, and they landed on the roadway. All four were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. The driver of the van was not flown by helicopter but was in critical condition. The condition of the other passenger in the van was not immediately clear.
Stansbury Park Resident Carolyn Bhattari spoke about the scene.
"There was cars everywhere, there was people everywhere," she said. "We were gonna stop, but there was a hundred, I dunno, there was a lot of people there that stopped to help already. It was just chaos."
The occupants of the minivan were part of a youth group from Dugway Hope Chapel traveling to see a concert.
State Route 36 was closed in both directions for several hours near the scene of the crash, but officials said around 8 p.m. Sunday the road had reopened. R.İ.P

FOLLOW ME. Everyday latest news ... TOOELE COUNTY, Utah -- Authorities responded to a three-vehicle accident in Tooele County Sunday, and three people were killed and another six were injured. Reports of the accident began to come in about 3:15 p.m., and the accident occurred along State Route 36 near the interchange with State Route 38 in Tooele County. There were eleven people total among the three vehicles, and officers confirmed that three people had been killed and six were being treated for injuries. Winchester SX3; fastest gun in the west! Weeheehoo Going on a rabbit hunt! Alright guys, today we're out in Tooele county, this is off of Black Rock Canyon road. This is out towards Faust, Utah. Just walking some sagebrush. We got the GoPro sportman's mount on there so we're gonna get some down the barrel camera action, and if you can't hear how crunchy the ground is, even for the desert it is dry! Alright, get an extra camera angle here, about 60 yards away you can just barely see him running... and boom the dynamite! Alright, made a good shot on him, rolled him, and it's a good thing when you are able to hit an animal really solid like that because it's satisfying to know that you dispatched the animal quickly and humanely and really practicing your marksmanship skills by either shooting at clay pigeons or just really knowing your weapon will help you be a more ethical hunter. Being able to make cleaner kills more often. This is the SX3. It's a semi-automatic 12 gauge, it is a kick butt gun! It's so much fun to shoot. A light weight, low recoil and I opted for the wood stock just cause I think it's pretty and I want to be able to pass it down. Pretty gun and it rolls the bunnies just fine. Alright, remember guys pick up your shells after you're done. Of course your first priority is to make sure you harvest the animal and dispatch it as quickly and respectfully as possible, but afterwards take a few minutes and go pick up your shells. Keep nature looking good and if you'd like to know how to field dress a rabbit or other small game click the link! See I actually pierced this guys ears, that's how far the shot had spread out. So I'm not like most people, I'll keep all the jack rabbits that I kill. Some people say, "Aw, well they're all disease, they're all terrible, they'll kill ya!" Well, if you think about it, as far as the biology is concerned, cotton tails have a higher occurrence of tularemia, which is that nasty bacteria everyone's worried about, than jack rabbits because they live in dens in close proximity with one another where as the jack rabbits are more free range. So, really the cotton tails you're more likely to get sick and if you like, basically, a brush buck mule deer that lives in the desert, think that tastes fine, it's pretty much exactly what the jack rabbits taste like, eat the same stuff, and as we well know we are what we eat! (Perhaps I'm furry do to my good diet of Jack Rabbits!?)

There were eleven people total among the three vehicles, and officers confirmed that three people had been killed and six were being treated for injuries. A total of three medical helicopters responded to the scene, along with EMS personnel.
Evan Kirby of the Utah Highway Patrol said people stepped up to help at the scene.
"There were so many patients," he said. "We had a lot of members of the community out helping with the children, and that was greatly appreciated by us."
The accident is under investigation, but according to information from the Utah Department of Public Safety, it appears a minivan traveling northbound on S.R. 36 attempted to change lanes, and it struck an SUV. The impact sent the minivan across the median into a southbound lane, and a Subaru traveling southbound struck the minivan.
Both occupants in the Subaru were killed. They have been identified as Melodie Clement, 58, and Urban "James" Montoya, 61, from Salt Lake City. Officers said they were both wearing their seat belts.
The front passenger in the minivan was also killed. She has been identified as Donnett McCollin, 43, from Dugway.
Four young adults were thrown from the minivan, and they landed on the roadway. All four were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. The driver of the van was not flown by helicopter but was in critical condition. The condition of the other passenger in the van was not immediately clear.
Stansbury Park Resident Carolyn Bhattari spoke about the scene.
"There was cars everywhere, there was people everywhere," she said. "We were gonna stop, but there was a hundred, I dunno, there was a lot of people there that stopped to help already. It was just chaos."
The occupants of the minivan were part of a youth group from Dugway Hope Chapel traveling to see a concert.
State Route 36 was closed in both directions for several hours near the scene of the crash, but officials said around 8 p.m. Sunday the road had reopened. R.İ.P

Construction of the Cathedral of the Madeleine began in 1900 and was completed in 1909, a Christian building whose exterior is of Romantic design and with a Gothic interior. Once both faith and diligence established this remarkable place. Since then, Salt Lake City has become the centre of a hugely successful religious empire.

Over the course of millions of years erosion and the incessant force of the river have created a unique and captivating landscape. Some kilometres south of the town of Page and Lake Powell and in the middle of a Navajo Indian reservation is a further natural masterpiece, Antelope Canyon. The bizarre, smooth walls and red sandstone formations as well as the marvellous natural light effects within the canyon are quite remarkable. Canyonlands is a national park of the same name in the south east of Utah where numerous canyons and steep river valleys seem to touch the horizon. The Valley Of Fire is situated in the oldest national park in Nevada and is also the location of Fire Canyon. Approximately eighty kilometres from Las Vegas the environment here provides a healthy and relaxing atmosphere compared to the neon lifestyle of the biggest gambling paradise in the world. From its source in the Rocky Mountains to its estuary in the Gulf Of Mexico, the Colorado River flows at an altitude of nearly three thousand metres above sea level. The rocks, sand and mud that are carried along with the water cut relentlessly into the stony ground. The deepest point of the canyons descends for 1,800 metres. Over the course of millions of years erosion and the incessant force of the river have created a unique and captivating landscape. Some kilometres south of the town of Page and Lake Powell and in the middle of a Navajo Indian reservation is a further natural masterpiece, Antelope Canyon. The bizarre, smooth walls and red sandstone formations as well as the marvellous natural light effects within the canyon are quite remarkable. Canyonlands is a national park of the same name in the south east of Utah where numerous canyons and steep river valleys seem to touch the horizon. The Valley Of Fire is situated in the oldest national park in Nevada and is also the location of Fire Canyon. Approximately eighty kilometres from Las Vegas the environment here provides a healthy and relaxing atmosphere compared to the neon lifestyle of the biggest gambling paradise in the world. When the Rocky Mountains began to develop more than ten million years ago and the Earth’s crust started to shift upwards, the Colorado Plateau formed and thus the smaller Paunsaugunt Plateau, the geological foundation of Bryce Canyon. The natural scenery in the western region of the U.S.A. is a land of revelation, a fantastic world of mystique, power and amazing colour.

Utah Day Trip – Exploring Historic Tooele County
For those who enjoy exploring Utah’s historical past, this Utah day trip may interest you. Within 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, you, your family, or friends can enjoy a day trip to Tooele County to explore some of the historical sites found in this part of the state. According to the Tooele County website, there are approximately 61 historical sites located throughout the county. Deseret Peak Stansbury Mountains Tooele County Utah Highpoint
High over the Utah Desert and just West above the town of Grantsville. OATH hiked Deseret Peak to its summit elevation of 11,033 ft. MSL. We camped at the Loop Campground around 8,000 ft. Even in June it gets cool at altitude. It was a nice 8 mile round-trip hike through lush meadows, wild-flowers, pine forests, Quaking Aspen, and the occasional persistent snow-drift. It was like the land of Oz.

For those who enjoy exploring Utah’s historical past, this Utah day trip may interest you. Within 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, you, your family, or friends can enjoy a day trip to Tooele County to explore some of the historical sites found in this part of the state. According to the Tooele County website, there are approximately 61 historical sites located throughout the county. On this day trip we are going to explore three different locations as we take a drive around what we call the “Oquirrh Mountain Loop”.
First Stop is Benson Grist Mill:
The Benson Grist Mill is located approximately 26 miles west of Salt Lake City via I-80. The mill was built in 1854 to serve the pioneer settlements in the area. From 1854 to the 1940's, the Benson Grist Mill ground and processed flour, bran, and cornmeal by the ton. Most of the original equipment used in the mill can still be seen today. Visitors to the mill can take a guided or self guided tour through the many historical structures located on the property, including the mill. The property also includes picnic tables, playground, restrooms, and a gift shop.
Directions: From Salt Lake City travel on I-80 west to exit 99. Travel on UT-36 to Stansbury Park. Take UT-138 and the mill will be located on the right. Watch for the signs.
Ophir, Utah:
Ophir, Utah is the second stop on our day trip through Tooele County. Ophir is one of my favorite historical towns in the state. I personally have been visiting this area since I was a kid, and although many things have changed since then, it’s still a fun little place to stop and explore. Ophir, Utah was established in 1860 when precious metals were discovered in the canyon. Word of the discoveries traveled fast, and miners from California, and Nevada arrived to strike it rich. Ophir quickly grew into a mining town which included stores, brothels, saloons, and dance halls. Today, visitors to Ophir can enjoy many of the restored old buildings, including the Town Hall.
Directions: From the Benson Grist Mill travel south on UT-36 through the town of Tooele, and Stockon to UT-73. Turn left on UT-73. From the turn off travel approximately 4.6 miles to the mouth of Ophir Canyon. The town is located approximately 3.2 miles up the canyon. Once you enter the canyon, take it easy and enjoy the beauty. Please respect private property.
Mercur Cemetery:
The Mecur Cemetery is the last location we visited on this day trip. The cemetery is all that remains of a very resilient town that grew, and died several times. The town was also destroyed by fire twice, rebuilt, and finally in 1951 the town died for the last time. The Mecur Cemetery is perched up on the hillside and is the resting place of several people who lived in the town. Some of the grave sites are outlined with picket fences, however, there are many more scattered around the hillside marked with only rocks. This place is very peaceful and very quiet, and if you decide to visit, please respect this area. This is a resting place of old miners, their families, and even small children.
Directions:
From the mouth of Ophir Canyon continue to travel on UT-73 south for approximately 4.1 miles to the mouth of Mecur Canyon. From here drive 1 mile to a pullout marked with a historical marker. The trail heads south and requires a short hike to access the Cemetery.
After visiting the Mecur Cemetery there are two ways to head back to Salt Lake City. You can continue to travel on UT-73 south and make the complete loop back to Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs, or you can go back the same way through Tooele. If you choose to do the “Oquirrh Mountain Loop” and you have enough time, here is one more location of interest on this route.
Camp Floyd State Park:
The Camp Floyd State Park features the Stage Coach Inn, which was an overnight stop on the historic overland stage and Pony Express route, also a military cemetery. This is located just off of UT-73 in Fairfield Utah.
This is an example of the many historic sites that can be visited in Tooele County. This is also a very small example of the many Utah Day Trips you and your family can enjoy within an hour from Salt Lake City.

This week on the County Seat we will introduce you to the Sheriff's Office by looking at a search and rescue exercise that Davis and Weber County participated in with the Army. Search and Rescue is just one function of the Sheriff's office but I think you will be surprised by the huge benefits that volunteers create by being part of search and rescue teams.
