STORYLINE:
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad lashed out at Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon's supporters on Tuesday saying that were "more racist than the Nazi's".
Assad's made the remarks during the first day of a two day summit for Arab leaders aimed at supporting Palestinians in their six-month-old uprising against Israeli occupation and forging a common policy on Iraq's dispute with Kuwait.
The gathering, held in Amman, is the first ordinary Arab summit since the 1990-1991 Gulf crisis, and attracted 14 heads of state, as well as Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Delegates had the thorny task of trying to forge a unified stance on Iraq's international isolation and reach agreement on how to deal with the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Jordan's King Abdullah II, who takes over the one-year rotating presidency of the Arab summit with this meeting, focused on the unity theme in his opening remarks as did the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Arafat said the Palestinian issue could only be solved by Aran nations, working together.
Assad also said that Sharon is a man who hates Arabs and Muslims and it was impossible for Arabs to think that a country who voted Sharon into power wants peace.
He dismissed the idea that Sharon - who was elected Prime Minister is February - should be given time to show his peaceful intentions.
Sharon is widely hated in the Arab world for his role as architect of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
An Israeli inquiry found him indirectly to blame for the slaughter by Israeli-backed Lebanese militiamen of hundreds of unarmed Palestinian refugees in two Beirut camps.
In his speech, the Syrian President reiterated the policy of his late father Hafez al-Assad that Syria will not make peace with Israel until it returned the Golan Heights which was captured from Syria during the 1967 war.
Libyan Leader Moamar Gadhafi took a break from the summit Tuesday afternoon, strolling in an area near the Dead Sea under an umbrella.
He played football with children and chatted with residents, who served him black spiced coffee and sweets.
He returned to the summit for the afternoon session.

It was the latest setback to the summit, which opened without three key Arab leaders after Jordan's King Abdullah II canceled plans to attend the crucial Beirut gathering.

Abdullah proposed to the summit a collective Arab plan to be forwarded to the U.N. Security Council based on "normal relations and the security of Israel in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab lands, recognition of an independent Palestinian state with noble Jerusalem as its capital and the return of the refugees."

STORYLINE:
Arab leaders have begun to arrive for this week's Arab League summit in Lebanon which will focus on the conflict in the Middle East.
The summit is Lebanon's most important conference since the end of the civil war and comes amid continuous escalation in violence between Israelis and the Palestinians.
Arab leaders are expected to discuss and possibly endorse a Saudi proposal offering Israel peace with the Arab world in return for a complete withdrawal from Arab lands seized by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war.
The Saudi proposal has gained European Union and United Nations support and has been welcomed by the United States and major Arab countries, except for Iraq and Libya.
Palestinian officials say that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be attending the summit, although Israel has placed conditions on the Palestinian leader leaving the West Bank.
If he attends the summit, it will be his first trip abroad since Israel confined him to his Ramallah headquarters in December and his first to Beirut since invading Israeli troops drove him from there in 1982.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon restricted Arafat to his Ramallah offices after a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings and shooting attacks, demanding that he crack down on militants.
The Israeli government has said Arafat can leave the West Bank only if a truce is reached after 18 months of violence in a Palestinian uprising against occupation.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has suggested that he should also go to Beirut to present Israel's views.
But it is unlikely Sharon would be welcome in the Lebanese capital, where he is despised for commanding Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
Security has been stepped up in Beirut ahead of the summit meeting.
More than 20 heads of Arab states, accompanied by high ranking officials, are expected to attend.
Security agents from the Lebanese Army have been conducting intensive training ahead of the summit.
Some 8-thousand-500 soldiers and police officers will be deployed and two army brigades, numbering about 6-thousand troops, will be on standby in case of emergency.

STORYLINE:
Syrian President Bashar Assad was the first Arab leader to arrive in Qatar on Saturday to attend the 21st Arab League summit that will take place in Doha on Monday.
Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani greeted Assad at Doha international airport.
The main topics to be addressed at the summit include ongoing Palestinian feuding and crafting an Arab response to the Hague-based International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for crimes against humanity in the suppression of a rebellion in the Darfur region.
At a news conference, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said that a resolution rejecting an international court's arrest warrant for Sudan's president would be issued during the summit.
Arab countries have been critical of the International Criminal Court's decision to indict Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on war crimes in Darfur.
Though three of its member states are signatories to the court, the Arab League has said it will not enforce the warrant and al-Bashir, who
rejects the ICC's charges, is expected to attend the summit.
Moussa said the Arab League would ask the United Nations Security Council to halt the case against al-Bashir.
"Our stance as the Arab League and as the African Union is to use all resources to stop this accusation," Moussa told reporters at a joint news conference with Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassem.
At the news conference, the Qatari prime minister responded to news that Egypt's president, Hosni Mubarak, will not attend Monday's summit.
"There is no doubt that the presence of the Egyptian president at the summit would contribute in solving the long and complicated Arab problems," he said.
President Mubarak's decision not to attend the meeting in Doha comes as relations among some Arab leaders have been strained over Iran's influence and continued feuding among Palestinian factions.
Qatar and Egypt, in particular, have been at odds over Qatar's growing regional prominence as a mediator, a role Cairo has long dominated.
Saudi Arabia has been leading efforts at reconciling the Arab divisions including courting Syria to move away from its ally Iran and join ranks with the kingdom and Egypt in its efforts to quell Tehran's influence, especially in Iraq and with Lebanese and Palestinian militant groups.
Many had pinned hopes on Arab leaders coming together at the this week's summit.
Egypt offered no public explanation for why Mubarak was not attending.
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit only said a minor Cabinet minister would represent Egypt at the two-day summit, according to Egypt's state news agency, MENA.
