Ian McShane - Lovejoy Interview
Ian David McShane[1] (born 29 September 1942) is an English actor, director, producer and voice artist.
Despite appearing in numerous films, McShane is best known for his television roles, particularly BBC's Lovejoy[2] (1986–94) and HBO's drama series Deadwood (2004–06).[3] McShane starred as King Silas Benjamin in the NBC series Kings, Bishop Waleran in The Pillars of the Earth, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda, and as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
McShane was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 29 September 1942, the son of Irene (née Cowley) (b. 1921) and footballer Harry McShane (1920–2012).[2][3][4] His father was Scottish and his mother, who was born in England, was of Irish and English descent.[5] McShane grew up in Urmston, Lancashire, and attended Stretford Grammar School. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and was still a student there when he appeared in his first film, 1962's The Wild and the Willing.[2] McShane was a member of National Youth Theatre.
In Britain, McShane's best known role may be that of antiques dealer Lovejoy in the hit BBC drama series of the same name.[2][3] He also enjoyed fame in the United States as English cad Don Lockwood in the soap opera Dallas and as an English cockfighting aficionado in the miniseries Roots. Even before Lovejoy, McShane was a pin-up as a result of appearances in television series such as Wuthering Heights (1967, as Heathcliff), If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969, as Charlie), Jesus of Nazareth (1977, as Judas Iscariot), and Disraeli (1978)—as well as films like Sky West and Crooked (1965) and Battle of Britain (1969).
In the United States, he is perhaps best known for the role of historical figure Al Swearengen in the HBO series Deadwood,[3] for which he won the 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Drama.[2] He was also nominated for at the 2005 Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Within the science fiction community, McShane is best known for playing the character Robert Bryson, Ph.D. in Babylon 5: The River of Souls.
In 1985, he appeared as an iconic MC on Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm, a concept album which featured his narration interspersed throughout, and which sold over a million copies worldwide.[6][7]
Other recent roles include Captain Hook in Shrek the Third, Iofur Raknison (known as Ragnar Sturlusson in the film) in The Golden Compass, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda (for which he received an Annie Award nomination), and Mr. Bobinsky, the strange Russian neighbor in Coraline. In live-action, he has performed in the comedy Hot Rod, the action/thriller Death Race, and The Seeker. He has appeared on the NBC television drama series The West Wing as a Russian diplomat.
During 2007–08, he starred as Max in the 40th anniversary Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, co-starring Eve Best, Raúl Esparza and Michael McKean, and directed by Daniel Sullivan, at the Cort Theatre (16 December 2007 to 13 April 2008).
In 2009, McShane appeared on the short-lived NBC television drama series Kings, which was based on the biblical story of David. His portrayal of King Silas Benjamin, an analogue of King Saul, was highly praised, with one critic saying, "Whenever Kings seems to falter, McShane appears to put bite marks all over the scenery."[8]
In 2010, McShane starred in the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth as Bishop Waleran Bigod. The series was a historical drama set in 12th century England and adapted from Ken Follett's novel of the same name.
Also in 2010, the Walt Disney Company confirmed that McShane would play Blackbeard in the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides.[9] In 2013, McShane played King Brahmwell in Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer.[10]
Since 2010, McShane has narrated the opening teases for each round of ESPN's coverage of The Open Championship.[11]
In 2012, McShane had a guest role for two episodes as Murder Santa, a sadistic serial killer in the 1960s in the second season of American Horror Story, alongside Jessica Lange and Zachary Quinto.
In 2016 he will join the cast of the HBO series Game of Thrones in Season 6.
McShane has been married three times: he first married and divorced Suzanne Farmer in the 1960s. In 1977, McShane began a relationship with actress Sylvia Kristel (star of the sex film Emmanuelle) after meeting her on the set of The Fifth Musketeer.[13] The affair ended his marriage to his second wife, the model Ruth Post, who is the mother of his two children, Kate and Morgan.[2] In 1980, he married actress Gwen Humble. They live in the Venice Beach community of Los Angeles

Based on the novel by Belva Plain, covering a time span from 1909 to 1959. The story begins in New York's Lower East Side with the arrival of Polish-Jewish immigrant Anna (Lesley Ann Warren). At first employed as a humble seamstress, Anna is whisked into a whole new world when she becomes the wife of the enterprising Joseph Friedman (Armand Assante), who eventually becomes a wealthy Westchester contractor. Even so, Anna's heart belongs to Paul Lerner (Ian Shane), the son of the prosperous Fifth Avenue family which employs her relatives. In 1918, Anna gives birth to Paul's daughter, allowing Joseph to believe that he is the father. The secret surrounding Anna's child will lead to a daunting and frequently heartbreaking chain of events, culminating decades later in the newly formed state of Israel, where Anna's grandson Eric hopes to "find himself" -- and ends up finding more than he bargained for.

A tribute to the queen and the king from the NBC TV show Kings. Mostly featuring the events of The New King and Queen Rose's reaction to them -- Susanna Thompson did a magnificent job playing this part, so I couldn't resist.

Susanna Thompson (born January 27, 1958) is an American television and film actress. She is skilled in Aikido and stage combat. She is best known for her role as Karen Sammler on Once and Again.
Thompson received a Dramatic Award for her role as Luisa in A Shayna Maidel. She was also nominated for Best Actress by the San Diego Critics Circle for her role in Agnes of God. She may be best known for her television work, which includes playing Karen Sammler on Once and Again, Michelle Generoo in an episode of The X-Files and a recurring role as the Borg Queen in the Star Trek: Voyager two-part episodes "Dark Frontier" (1999) and "Unimatrix Zero" (2000). Thompson also portrayed Denise Hydecker on the 1998 made-for-TV movie The Lake with Yasmine Bleeth.
One of Thompson's most controversial television appearances was on an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine entitled "Rejoined". In the episode, she participated in one of US television's first same-sex kisses. The episode first aired on October 30, 1995.

Allison Miller (born September 2, 1985) is an American actress. She is best known for her role as Michelle Benjamin on the NBC series Kings in 2009. In 2011, she co-starred as Skye Tate on the Fox series Terra Nova.
Miller was born in Rome, Italy. She grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, State College, Pennsylvania, and Tallahassee, Florida. She is the daughter of Margo and John Winn Miller. Her father John was the former publisher of The Olympian newspaper in Olympia, Washington. He retired in January 2009 to pursue other interests. Her parents have since left Washington and moved back to the eastern United States.
Miller graduated from Maclay School in Tallahassee. She attended the University of Florida in Gainesville for a few semesters before transferring to Rhodes College. She is a sister of Kappa Delta sorority and was featured in a story in Kappa Delta's newsletter The Angelos.
In 2006, Miller moved to Hollywood to pursue her career full-time. In addition to acting, she has training in voice, tap, and jazz, as well as in modern dance. She is a mezzo-soprano and plays the piano and the guitar. She is proficient in Spanish and French.

King Silas Benjamin came to power in a mythical battle against the rival neighbor republic of Gath, capitalizing brilliantly and ruthlessly on his near-godly image. Farm-boy David Shepherd performs as well, saving Silas's crown prince in another epic battle, but is too noble and naive to aspire personal benefit rather then devoutly serve king and country. Nevertheless, after Silas decides to abuse David's legend, the hero is drawn into palace intrigues culminating into coup plans against Silas.

I am heavily involved in the study of coherent technologies through development of a ultra-weak bioluminescence imaging system that can detect the coherency of a system in 3 dimensions (used for food spoilage and medical imaging). Part of the technology was originally developed by my partner for an MRI Hitachi machine and a satellite imaging system for a government contract. I believe that technologies based on fragmented energies stifle the prospect for a macro homeostasis state in a world based on superconducting energy sources. (My friend who is J Paul Getty's grandson once told me how badly he hates oil, which reassures me that while some may suppress coherent technologies, eventually people will embrace the idea). As for currency trading I'm well aware that London has been and always will be the financial capital of the world. With the BIS statistics and the work of scholars like Carroll Quigley, you can easily see how consolidated the banking industry is. The first piece was a little ditty called "Ghost Dance." It was awful, but it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do in life. At age eight, when I saw STAR WARS, I knew for sure. I played the French horn in middle and high school marching band. In front of a mirror, I practiced conducting with a magic wand to a collection of Leonard Bernstein records my parents gave me. I continued playing piano and later bought some drums. (Of course, yes, I was in a couple of high school garage bands.) I purchased my first synthesizers when I was 14 -- a Casiotone MT-40, a Moog Bass, and a Mirage DSK. Attending the University of Texas in Austin, I failed to impress the music panel with my piano playing, so I received a nice letter informing me that I was not accepted into the School of Music and "should consider another career path." In hindsight, probably the best letter I ever received. While in college, I had the good fortune to secure a summer internship at Disney Studios in their film music department. This lead to my first job after college for Disney's Hollywood Records. After two years, I moved to Disney Music Publishing and managed their print music division. In 1996, I began freelance work: arranging music and writing method books for Hal Leonard Publishing. I authored more than 25 instrumental method books, including the best-selling piano method, "Piano for Dummies," and the award-winning series, "FastTrack Music Instruction." This is the edited version of the full 2 sets of music which, by editing out all the storytelling and song introductions, runs approx 40 minutes shorter than the unedited version which includes all the storytelling and song intros. Both are excellent for viewing (HD) and listening. However, may I suggest that if you have never had a chance to catch Verlon " au natural" it is well worth, for at least your first experience, playing the full unedited version, sitting back and relaxing and enjoying the whole of it as we all did that night....... Note : The video & audio of the first song were somewhat challenged due to Verlon's style of walking out into the audience to see what he's working with and, as he says, " Cuz it throws the camera guys off " :-) Bio : Verlon Thompson spins stories with a novelist's eye ("Caddo County") and a poet's ingenuity ("The Get to You Waltz"). Thirty years on, the celebrated songwriter's Works spotlights a troubadour in peak form Thompson's seamless collection delivers Technicolor dreamscapes as wildly cinematic ("The Guitar") as they are sharply crafted. Dress William Faulkner with faded jeans and a pawnshop six-string and the idea takes shape ("Oklahomagain," "The Ballad of Stringbean and Estelle"). "Verlon sparkles as a songwriter," says legendary tunesmith Guy Clark. "He's inspiring." Not to mention singular. Thompson's lyrics strike pages with thunderclap potency. Few frame heartache as vividly. Fewer still follow with such wholly satisfying resolution ("Mike and Betty's Daughter"). Interpret the title Works as you wish. Contents suggest the literate implications. "Even the love songs are story-oriented," Thompson explains. "I've found that I've started leaning more that way in my live show, which I've heard people refer to as a travelogue. I start with the 'The Show We Call the Business,' which is about coming to Nashville, and then I take them back to Oklahoma where it all started with 'Oklahomagain' & 'Caddo County' and bring them back to the present day with these other songs. It's my experiences. They're not all personal experiences, but mostly." Thompson's back story already has achieved significant heights.
