The war lasted until 1815, and it resolved very little. John will take you through the causes of the war, tell you a little bit about the fighting itself, and get into just why the US Army couldn't manage to make any progress invading Canada. And yes, Canadians, we're going to talk about the White House getting burned down. The upshot: no territory changed hands, and most of the other bones of contention were solved prior to the actual war. Although nothing much changed for the US and England, the Native Americans were the big losers. Tecumseh was killed, and the Indian tribes lost a lot of territory. Watch as John lays it all out for you. Also, check out #1812problems on Twitter. It's awesome.

The War of 1812 is "the war we don't know too much about" in America. The same holds true in Britain, where the conflict on the North American continent was a sideshow—the United States declared war on Great Britain in June 1812, the same month that Napoleon invaded Russia. Only two groups have deep memories of the war fought in North America between 1812 and 1815: Canadians and the people of the native tribes.

British major general Sir Isaac Brock captured Detroit without a fight. Courtesy of Portrait by George Theodore Berthon, ca.1883; Government of Ontario Art Collection.
It is the war of "Don't give up the ship," the war that gave America its national anthem, saw the White House burned, and made a folk hero of a rough-hewn Tennessee militia commander who would ride his popularity to the presidency, forever changing American politics.
But it also had elements Americans would just as soon forget, and indeed, for the most part they have. During the first two years, United States troops often did not perform well and frequently their commanders were buffoons; the garrison at Detroit surrendered without a fight. The New England states continued commerce with the enemy and threatened to secede. Accepted rules of warfare were violated, giving free reign to fire and sword and terror among civilians north and south of the U.S.--Canadian border. And in the end, the war appeared to be a stalemate: not an inch of territorial boundaries changed.
But as the new documentary The War of 1812 from PBS makes clear, the conflict is one that should be better remembered and more thoroughly studied. The United States could have lost its northern Atlantic seaboard and a sizeable portion of what is now the Midwest—or could have annexed part of Canada—if just a few things had gone differently. The war also marked the last best hope for the native tribes to retain sovereignty over lands east of the Mississippi.

Hear the Warhawks "roar" their way into the US's first officially declared war!
We use to trade with France and with England,
But then they started to impress our men,
Not by enrapturing them,
Instead by capturing them,
So we said to both "we can 't be bros"
1807, passed an embargo,
But it destroyed our trade,
What a mistake we made,
In 1810 we told them,
With just one we could be friends,
France was first and now we can,
Be amis with Napoleon,
England's worse than ever now,
All their warships are on the prowl,
There's just one choice that we have
We must show we do not play, listen to Henry Clay and fight them,
Cause we are the warhawks, and we want to go to war!
On to Canada, and de-Brit the continent,
We want to go to war!
Things are not going quite as we planned,
Britain got the Native Americans,
Fighting us in the west ,
This war is such a mess,
France has fallen, England can, send over here all of its men,
They're storming into DC now, and the White House just got burnt down,
McHenry 's still standing strong, Francis Key just wrote a song,
And in New Orleans, Old Hickory won,
At least we proved we're a fighter, not a colony, to be messed with now quick, sign that treaty
Cause we got to end this war
Not one inch of Territory Ceded or Lost
Not bad for our first war!

"The end of the War marked the beginning of Two Centuries of peaceful relations, close cooperation and friendship between Canada and the United States." www.1812.gc.ca Advertisement Commercial for the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 produced by the Government of Canada. "The United States invaded our territory... But we defended our land."
"My dear Father,
The 26th(Oct, 1813) has been a glorious day for me and those of my troops engaged. The American army commanded by Gen'l Hampton and another general has been repulsed by a little band - all Canadians - and yesterday that army commenced its retreat, or will endeavour to get into this country through some other road. The enemy's force consisted of all his troops, about 7,000 men and 5 pieces of cannon, 300 cavalry. The action lasted four hours, and it ended in the enemy being obliged to return to his former position five miles back, leaving many of his dead and wounded behind and a great number of his men scattered in the woods, also many drums, 150 firelocks and baggage. The number of my men engaged did not exceed three hundred. The rest were in reserve in the lines I had constructed. Our killed and wounded were only 24 including officers, there were none but Canadians amongst us. I was in the first line during the whole of the action and afterwards, with a small reserve, beat off a large body of Americans and saved Capt. Daily and his company. I chose my own ground and after the action pushed in my piquets two miles in advance of where they were before. Without arrogating to myself too much credit, I am proud to think that this defence, on our part, has at least prevented the American army from penetrating to La Prairie. We are here situated about 35 miles from Montreal. This is certainly a most extraordinary affair. Chevalier and all officers in this action conducted themselves with great bravery. The prisoners have been about 25. We are all very much harassed and I am not well.
I remain in haste, my dear Father, Yours faithfully,
Ch. de Salaberry"
