Description:
Death is a common denominator amongst all living creatures on this planet. We, as a society, seem to have an obsession with death and how we will end our lives. From illness, to suicide, to unexpected death, our last moments have more of a weighted meaning than the moments from the prime of our lives. This is likely why our society has such an obsession with the last words spoken before death. The death penalty has been a focal point of controversy for the last several decades, but it’s been a practice that’s been in existence for hundreds of years as being put to death was a customary punishment for even the simplest offences.
Now, if you’re an inmate on death row, the date and time of the end of your life has already been determined. It can be either relaxing or unsettling to know when your death will be, but it can also provide an ample opportunity to prepare the perfect set of last words. If you knew you were going to die, what would be your last words? This video provides ten of the most shocking last words by inmates who were on death row. From quirky, to confusing, to profound, these inmates really shook the core of those around them enough to where people are still talking about their last words today.
For example, Robert Towery was put to death in 2012 by lethal injection and said, “I love my family. Potato, potato, potato.” This is quite a confusing set of last words. The first sentence makes sense, but them the “potato” part not so much. Was his family named potato? Did he want to eat a potato? Regardless of the reason, it made numerous people raise an eyebrow to the statement. Perhaps weird last words such as this could even mean something to a long lost friend or relative out there, or the inmate just wanted to have one last hurrah, even if it was psychologically.
Then we have death row inmates who can be humorous and sassy on their last day. For example, George Appel was sentenced to death after killing an NYPD officer. As he prepared to get into the electric chair, he said, “Well, gentlemen, you are about to see a baked Appel.” But he wasn’t the only one to make a joke out of his name. James D. French was initially sentenced to life in prison. Not wanting to commit suicide, he killed his cell mate so that he could be executed. His last words before being electrocuted were, “Here’s this for a headline? ‘French Fries’.”
Finally, the impact of last words could quite have the potential to change the world or force people to rethink their morals and standards. Robert Drew was executed in 1994 and said, “Remember, the death penalty is murder.” For a murderer to say that, it seems as though he is leveling the playing field with the judicial system.
As we continue to live our lives, perhaps the concept of last words should be more of a forethought instead of an afterthought. Most of us will luckily never have the “luxury” that death row inmates have in knowing the time and date of our death.

Description:
When prisoners commit a heinous crime of murder, especially when multiple lives are lost, the ultimate choice is to choose to end the criminal’s life. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
The practice of giving a last meal to a death row inmate dates back several centuries, starting in Europe. The belief was that if the inmate accepted their last meal, it meant that they made peace with their host and would not return as a ghost after death. The tradition has continued strongly, and the practice is still in the United States prison system. The inmate can request whatever they want for their last meal, within reason. It is that inmate’s last opportunity to gorge on their favorite foods, reminisce about their life, and hopefully make peace within themselves over their impending doom.
Today, there are a few prisons that have now ended their “last meal” tradition due to the inmates making large requests and then never eating the meal, much to the dismay of the prison staff. There have been many people who have protested the concept of the last meal, calling it a waste of taxpayer dollars. But the tradition still goes on all over the world. It is interesting to see what these hardened criminals choose as their last moment of food consumption that they will ever have in their lives. What it must be like for these people to eat what they know as their last meal is the subject of books and movies. We can never directly relate to the experience except for what we can watch from a distance.
You can a lot about a prisoner’s personality based on what they chose as their last meal. Some want to gorge on all of their favorite foods, while others want to recreate a favorite meal from their past like their wedding dinner or a home-cooked meal from their mother. But then there are other inmates who will be snarky and request things like “world peace” or a lump of dirt like James Edward Smith did (that request wasn’t obliged and he was given yogurt instead). And there are also inmates who will exercise their sweet tooth with ice cream, cakes, candy, and other variations of sweets. Or, you will have the inmates who will not even request a last meal and will sit in prayer and meditation as their execution comes closer with each tick of the clock.
One of the most infamous murderers, John Wayne Gacy, who had raped and killed 33 boys and young men, had a meal that was clearly reminiscent of his life. He managed three KFC restaurants in his life, and requested a bucket of original recipe KFC chicken, 12 pieces of fried shrimp, French fries, and a pound of strawberries. The meal was both indulgent and enjoyable it seems before he died the next day.
So what exactly have inmates requested for their last meals? Check out the video to find out. Some may make you laugh, make you confused, or just simply apathetic. As you watch, consider what meal you would want on your last evening alive.

Picture is of Jeremy Meeks and is not a depiction of the so called actual inmate from whom this letter comes from. It is a widely distributed facebook story. Its validity is in question but the message of this video remains firm intact in principle.
The last wish
A death row inmate awaiting execution, asked as a last wish a pencil and paper. After writing for several minutes, the convict called the prison guard and asked that this letter be handed over to his biological mother.
The letter said ...
Mother, if there were more justice in this world, we would be both executed and not just me. You're as guilty as I am for the life I led.
Remind yourself when I stole and bring home the bicycle of a boy like me?
You helped me to hide the bicycle for my father did not see it. Do you remember the time I stole money from the neighbor's wallet?
You went with me to the mall to spend it.
Do you remember when I argued with my father and he's gone?
He just wanted to correct me because I stole the final result of the competition and for that I had been expelled.
Mom, I was just a child, shortly after I became a troubled teenager and now I'm a pretty malformed man.
Mom, I was just a child in need of correction, and not an approval. But I forgive you!
I just want this letter to reach the greatest number of parents in the world, so they can know what makes all people, good or bad ...is education.
Thank you mother for giving me life and also helping me to lose it.
Your child offender.
REFLECTION:
"He who spares the rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him promptly "(Proverbs 13: 24).

lyrics
Well I was layin’ in my cell on death row
When I heard the warden say
He said Ray you got one more day.
You got one last meal before we carry you away.
He said if we ain’t got it, we’re gonna have to send out and get it
And you don’t have to go, you don’t have to go
Until we get back with it
Everything!
So I turned to the warden and then I said,
Warden bring me two dinosaur eggs over easy
Fried in butter, and not too greasy,
Mosquito knees and black eyed peas.
A little bit of butter on my bee bop beans, a saber tooth tiger steak
A whole hippopotamus well baked
So go and get my dinner, go, and get my dinner
You ain’t got it, go out and get it
Cause I ain’t goin’ till you get back with it
Now bring me a cup of crocodile tears,
I want a purple watermelon and some alligator ears
Two cross-eyed catfish and a female banana I sure can’t resist
Now bring me an order of those fried _______________
A barbequed brick of chocolate ice cream
So go and get my dinner, go, and get my dinner
You ain’t got it, go out and get it
Cause I ain’t goin’ till you get back with it
Now go, and get my dinner, go
And get my dinner, go

Death row, in English-speaking countries that have capital punishment, is the place, often a section of a prison, that houses prisoners awaiting execution. The term is also used figuratively to describe the state of awaiting execution ("being on death row"), even in places where no special facility or separate unit for condemned inmates exists. After persons are found guilty of an offence and sent

In Henan Province, in central China, millions of people have been tuning in every week to watch an extraordinary talk show called Interviews Before Execution, in which a er interviews murderers condemned to death. The show ran for just over five years, until it was taken off air on Friday.
Every Monday morning, er Ding Yu and her team scoured court s to find cases to cover on their programme. They had to move quickly, as prisoners in China can be executed seven days after they are sentenced.
To Western eyes the show's format may seem exploitative, but Ding disagrees.
"Some viewers may consider it cruel to ask a criminal to do an interview when they are about to be executed.
"On the contrary, they want to be heard," she says.
"Some criminals I interviewed told me: 'I'm really very glad. I said so many things in my heart to you at this time. In prison, there was never a person I was willing to talk to about past events.'"
I witness the transition from life to death
Ding Yu
Interviews Before Execution was first broadcast on 18 November 2006 on Henan Legal Channel, one of 3,000 state-owned TV stations in China. Ding interviewed a prisoner every week until the programme was taken off air.
The move follows a handful of s about the show in foreign media, which were triggered by a documentary to be screened on the BBC tonight and on PBS International in the near future.
The aim of Interviews Before Execution, the programme-makers say, was to find cases that would serve as a warning to others. The slogan at the top of every programme called for human nature to awaken and "perceive the value of life".
In China, 55 crimes carry the death penalty, from murder, treason and armed rebellion to bribery and smuggling. Thirteen other crimes, including VAT fraud, smuggling relics and credit fraud, were only recently removed from the list of capital offences.
Interviews Before Execution, however, focused exclusively on cases of violent murder.
Bullet or injection
There are thought to be more executions than in any other country, although the exact number is a state secret
There is no presumption of innocence in Chinese law and confessions are sometimes taken before the suspect has had access to a lawyer
Convicted prisoners are killed by a single shot to the back of the head or by lethal injection inside a mobile execution truck
It never interviewed political prisoners or cases where the crime was in question, and the team received the Henan high court's consent in every case.
"Without their consent, our programme would end immediately," Ding told the BBC documentary team.
Broadcast every Saturday night, the programme was frequently rated one of Henan's top 10 shows, with nearly 40 million viewers out of the 100 million who live in the province.
It made Ding Yu a star, known to many as "Beauty with the Beasts".
If people failed to heed the warnings the programme offered, she says, then it was right that they should face the consequences.
"I feel sorry and regretful for them. But I don't sympathise with them, for they should pay a heavy price for their wrongdoing. They deserve it."
Many of the cases featured in the programme were motivated by money and one case in particular stands out for Ding.
The perpetrators were boyfriend and girlfriend - young, educated college graduates.
Bao Ronting
Bao Ronting was the first openly gay man Ding Yu ever met
The couple planned to rob her grandparents but it went wrong and the young man, 27-year-old Zhang Peng, ended up killing them both.
"They are so young. They never had the chance to see this world, or to enjoy life, a career, work, and the love of family.
"They've made the wrong choice, and the price is their lives," Ding says.
But after more than 200 interviews, little surprises her.
"I've interviewed criminals even younger than that young student, some just 18 years old. That is the minimum age you can be sentenced to death."
Homosexuality is still a huge taboo in China, and when in 2008 the show covered the case of Bao Ronting, a gay man who murdered his mother, ratings soared.
It was the first time Ding had ever met an openly gay man.
"I had never come close to a gay man, so I really couldn't accept some of his practices, words and deeds.
"Though he was a man, he asked me in a very feminine tone, 'Do you feel awkward speaking to me?' Actually I felt very awkward," she recalls.

Murder of Heather Strong
In February 2009, Heather Strong was kidnapped and murdered in Marion County, Florida. Her killer, Emilia Lily Carr, was found guilty in December 2010 and sentenced to death by lethal injection in February 2011.
Carr is one of four women on death row in the state of Florida. Another suspect, Joshua Fulgham, Strong's husband, was also convicted of first-degree murder and kidnapping in her death and is awaiting sentencing. He received two consecutive sentences of life in prison without parole.
Emilia Lily Carr was born Emilia Yera, the second of three sisters. A psychologist estimated her IQ to be 125. At the age of 15, she reported abuse by her father to her school, but withdrew her statement to officials.
In February 2004, Carr's father was convicted of attempting to solicit the murders of his family and was sentenced to four years in prison. Carr had been married twice and filed a restraining order against one of her ex-husbands for domestic violence. She was sentenced to two years of probation for her involvement in her ex-husband's grand theft of exotic birds. Carr had three children at the time, one of them with ex-boyfriend Jamie Acome.
In November 2008, Carr became engaged to Joshua Damien Fulgham, who instead married Heather Strong one month later. However, Carr maintained contact with them and babysat Strong's two children, according to Carr's family.
In January 2009, Fulgham was arrested for threatening Strong with a shotgun, but was released after the charge of aggravated assault with a firearm was dropped. Investigators later discovered that Carr had threatened Strong with a knife to force her to withdraw her criminal complaint. Carr and Fulgham re-established their relationship while Strong began seeing someone else. Fulgham and Strong became involved in a legal battle over the custody of their two children.
In February 2009, Heather Strong, then a 26-year-old resident of Citra, Florida, disappeared while employed at an Iron Skillet restaurant at a Petro gas station next to Interstate Route 75 in Reddick. She was reported missing on February 15. Her remains were discovered on March 19, in a shallow grave by a storage trailer in Boardman, near McIntosh, Florida.
Carr was arrested on March 24, after investigators noted the frequency of her statements to authorities, ten in all without the presence of an attorney. Detectives also recorded undercover audio of Carr discussing details of the crime with Fulgham's sister.
Carr, who at the time was seven months pregnant with Fulgham's child, tricked Strong into the storage trailer behind the home of Carr's mother Maria and placed a plastic bag over her head after unsuccessfully trying to break her neck. Strong eventually died of asphyxiation while bound by duct tape to a computer chair. Strong's estranged husband Joshua Fulgham was arrested on suspicion of fraud for using her credit cards after she had disappeared.
Later in March 2009, Carr gave birth to her fourth child while in custody at Marion County Jail; all of her children were placed in foster care. Carr provided a confession to investigators, but claimed that she had only done so in the hope of being reunited with her children.

Death row, in English-speaking countries that have capital punishment, is the place, often a section of a prison, that houses prisoners awaiting execution. The term is also used figuratively to describe the state of awaiting execution ("being on death row"), even in places where no special facility or separate unit for condemned inmates exists. After persons are found guilty of an offence and sentenced to death, they remain on death row during appeal and habeas corpus procedures.
Opponents of capital punishment claim that a prisoner's isolation and uncertainty over his or her fate constitute a form of mental cruelty and that especially long-time death row inmates are liable to become mentally ill, if they are not already. This is referred to as the death row phenomenon. In extreme cases some inmates may attempt to commit suicide.
In the United States, prisoners may wait years before execution can be carried out due to the complex and time-consuming appeals procedures mandated in the jurisdiction. The time between sentencing and execution has increased relatively steadily between 1977 and 2010, including a 22% jump between 1989 and 1990 and a similar jump between 2008 and 2009. In 2010, a death row inmate waited an average of 178 months (roughly 15 years) between sentencing and execution.[1] Nearly a quarter of deaths on death row in the U.S. are due to natural causes.[2]
When the United Kingdom had capital punishment, the convicted were given one appeal of their sentence. If that appeal was found to involve an important point of law it was taken up to the House of Lords, and if the appeal was successful, at that point the sentence was changed to life in prison.[3] The Home Secretary in the United Kingdom had the power to exercise the Sovereign's royal prerogative of mercy to grant a reprieve on execution and change the sentence to life imprisonment.
In some Caribbean countries which still authorize execution, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council is the ultimate court of appeals. It has upheld appeals by prisoners who have spent several years under sentence of death, stating that it does not desire to see the death row phenomenon emerge in countries under its jurisdiction.
Haiti continued[citation needed] the conventional 'reprieved if not executed within 90 days' process adopted by Britain before its abolition (Haiti later abolished the death penalty in 1987).[4]

Louisiana State Penitentiary, which houses the male death row prisoners sentenced by the State of Louisiana
The Mississippi State Penitentiary, which houses male death row prisoners sentenced by the State of Mississippi
Oklahoma State Penitentiary, which houses male death row prisoners sentenced by the state of Oklahoma
There were 3,125 people on death row in the United States on January 1, 2013.[5] Since 1977, the states of Texas (464), Virginia (108) and Oklahoma (94) have executed the most death row inmates.[1] As of 2010, California (683), Florida (390), Texas (330) and Pennsylvania (218) housed more than half of all inmates pending on death row. As of 2008, the longest-serving prisoner on death row in the U.S.A. who has been executed was Jack Alderman who served over 33 years. He was executed in Georgia in 2008.[6] However, Alderman only holds the distinction of being the longest-serving executed inmate so far. A Florida inmate, Gary Alvord, arrived on Florida's death row in 1974. On 9 April 2013, Alvord had been on death row for exactly 39 years until he died on May 19, 2013 from a brain tumor, having been longer on death row than any other United States inmate. [7] The oldest prisoner on death row in the United States was Leroy Nash, age 94, in Arizona. He died of natural causes on February 12, 2010.
