The United Nations Trusteeship Council, one of the principal organs of the United Nations, was established to help ensure that trust territories were administered in the best interests of their inhabitants and of international peace and security. The trust territories—most of them former mandates of the League of Nations or territories taken from nations defeated at the end of World War II—have all now attained self-government or independence, either as separate nations or by joining neighbouring independent countries. The last was Palau, formerly part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which became a member state of the United Nations in December 1994.

The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization established 24 October 1945 to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was created following the Second World War to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and enjoys extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.
During the Second World War, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated talks on a successor agency to the League of Nations, and the United Nations Charter was drafted at a conference in April–June 1945; this charter took effect 24 October 1945, and the UN began operation. The UN's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in its early decades by the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union and their respective allies. The organization participated in major actions in Korea and the Congo, as well as approving the creation of the state of Israel in 1947. The organization's membership grew significantly following widespread decolonization in the 1960s, and by the 1970s its budget for economic and social development programmes far outstripped its spending on peacekeeping. After the end of the Cold War, the UN took on major military and peacekeeping missions across the world with varying degrees of success.
The UN has six principal organs: the General Assembly (the main deliberative assembly); the Security Council (for deciding certain resolutions for peace and security); the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (for promoting international economic and social co-operation and development); the Secretariat (for providing studies, information, and facilities needed by the UN); the International Court of Justice (the primary judicial organ); and the United Nations Trusteeship Council (inactive since 1994). UN System agencies include the World Bank Group, the World Health Organization, the World Food Programme, UNESCO, and UNICEF. The UN's most prominent officer is the Secretary-General, an office held by South Korean Ban Ki-moon since 2007. Non-governmental organizations may be granted consultative status with ECOSOC and other agencies to participate in the UN's work.
The organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, and a number of its officers and agencies have also been awarded the prize. Other evaluations of the UN's effectiveness have been mixed. Some commentators believe the organization to be an important force for peace and human development, while others have called the organization ineffective, corrupt, or biased.

23 September 2014
President Benigno S. Aquino III called on world leaders to start working together to address the effects of climate change especially to countries that are most vulnerable like the Philippines during the United Nations Climate Summit held at the UN Headquarters in New York City.
“Everyone here has to do everything they can to address climate change, without first waiting for their neighbours to engage in action. The Philippines is not waiting. We are addressing climate change to the maximum with our limited resources,” said President Aquino.
He also enumerated the government climate actions and plans to lessen the impact of disasters brought about by climate change. These include weather forecasting, multi-hazard and geo-hazard mapping, re-greening program and tagging public expenditure on climate change to ensure fund allocation, among others.
The President also highlighted the country's passage of the Renewable Energy Act in 2008, and the continuing tread to a climate-smart development pathway.
“Climate change does not recognize national boundaries, or political or economic affiliations. Together we must face these challenges and surmount them, or together we will suffer the consequences of inaction,” President Aquino concluded.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited and asked global leaders to bring forth their climate action plans to the Summit and come up with an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Paris next year.

The United Nations Secretariat is one of the six major organs of the United Nations the General Assembly; the Security Council; the Economic and Social Council; the defunct Trusteeship Council; and the International Court of Justice. The Secretariat is the United Nations' executive arm. The Secretariat has an important role in setting the agenda for the UN's deliberative and decision making bodies of the UN, and the implementation of the decision of these bodies. Secretary General, who is appointed by the General Assembly, is the head of the secretariat. The strength of secretariat staff, which is staffed by nationals of member states, has increased from 1,549 in 1949 to 43,747, in 2011.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trust_Territory_of_the_Pacific_Islands
The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) was a United Nations trust territory in Micronesia (western Pacific) administered by the United States from 1947 to 1986.
History
The territory comprised the former South Pacific Mandate, a League of Nations Mandate administered by Japan and taken by the U.S. in 1944.
The TTPI entered UN trusteeship on July 18, 1947 and was designated a "strategic area" in its 1947 trusteeship agreement. As such, its formal status as a UN trust territory could be terminated only by the Security Council, and not by the General Assembly as with other trust territories.[citation needed] The United States Navy controlled the TTPI from a headquarters in Guam until 1951, when the United States Department of the Interior took over control, administering the territory from a base in Saipan.
A Congress of Micronesia first levied an income tax in 1971. It affected mainly foreigners working at military bases in the region.
On October 21, 1986, the U.S. ended its administration of the Marshall Islands District. The termination of U.S. administration of the Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and the Mariana Islands districts of the TTPI soon followed on November 3, 1986. The Security Council formally ended the trusteeship for the Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Mariana Islands, and Marshall Islands districts on December 22, 1990. On May 25, 1994, the Council ended the trusteeship for the Palau District, after which the U.S. and Palau agreed to establish the latter's independence on October 1.
Current status
The area is now divided into four territories:
Sovereign states in free association with the United States
The following sovereign states have become freely associated with the United States under the Compact of Free Association (COFA).
- Republic of the Marshall Islands - Established 1979, COFA effective October 21, 1986
- Federated States of Micronesia - Established 1979, COFA effective November 3, 1986
- Republic of Palau - Established 1981, COFA effect October 1, 1994
Unincorporated organized territory of the United States
- Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands - New constitution partially effective January 1, 1978, and fully effective November 4, 1986...

Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trust_Territory_of_the_Pacific_Islands

Drawing from his 29-year experience of a UN in transformation, Dr Shashi Tharoor joins UNU Rector David M. Malone for a conversation exploring the debates about the UN’s role and relevance at 70 and its future prospects. Criticisms of the UN’s structure and functioning from the United States are now being complemented by the frustration of emerging countries that have been denied a place at the UN’s high table, the Security Council. Calls for reform, if not radical reinvention, are being heard. Is the UN still relevant in a world dramatically different from that in which it was founded?

The division of Korea into South Korea and North Korea was the result of the 1945 Allied victory in World War II, ending the Empire of Japan's 35-year colonial rule of Korea by General Order No. 1. The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to temporarily occupy the country as a trusteeship with the zone of control along the 38th parallel. The purpose of this trusteeship was to establish a Korean provisional government which would become "free and independent in due course", as set forth in the Cairo Conference.
Though elections were scheduled, the Soviet Union refused to cooperate with United Nations plans to hold general and free elections in the two Korean zones, and as a result, a Communist state was permanently established under Soviet auspices in the north and a pro-Western state was set up in the south. The two superpowers backed different leaders and two states were effectively established, each of which claimed sovereignty over the whole Korean peninsula.

The Special Forces Qualification Course or, informally, the Q Course is the initial formal training program for entry into the United States Army Special Forces. Phase I of the Q Course is Special Forces Assessment and Selection. Getting "Selected" at SFAS will enable a candidate to continue on to the next of the four phases. If a candidate successfully completes all phases he will graduate as a Special Forces qualified soldier and then, generally, be assigned to a 12-man Operational Detachment "A", commonly known as an "A team." The length of the Q Course changes depending on the applicant's primary job field within Special Forces and their assigned foreign language capability but will usually last between 56 to 95 weeks.
