I've explained what moles and freckles are and the differences between them, but where do beauty marks fit in? Stay tuned!
After DermTV episodes explaining what moles and freckles are and the very important differences between them, I received a lot of questions about beauty marks, especially asking what they are and how they're different from moles and freckles.
This is an easy one and probably the shortest DermTV episode ever!
All beauty marks are moles!
Everything I said about moles applies to beauty marks... their colors, shape, whether they are flat or raised, and even their potential to turn into deadly melanomas.
Many celebrities have specific beauty marks for which they have become known by. Because the term "beauty marks" has an aesthetic connotation, we generally tend to call moles on the face beauty marks, while the same exact mole elsewhere on the body is just called a mole.
So while every beauty mark is a mole, and every mole could be called a beauty mark, depending on where they are, some are called moles and some are called beauty marks.

Here are 10 facts about moles.
For some, moles are nothing more than blemishes while others, like Marilyn Monroe and Cindy Crawford, have made them their trademarks.
Love them or hate them, here are 10 facts about moles.
Number 10. They have a formal name. In certain circles if you have one it’s a nevus, and those with several have nevi.
Number 9. Having quite a few is common. Most people have between 10 and 40. Once a person hits the age of 40 they typically stop developing new ones, and in older years they start to fade away.
Number 8. Darker doesn’t always mean dangerous. It’s not uncommon for the color of moles to deepen throughout one’s teen years, when they’re in the sun, or during pregnancy. Color changes can be a sign of cancer, though, so having them checked is a good idea.
Number 7. They can be any size and anywhere. About 1 in 200 to 500 thousand people have large moles than cover a good portion of their body. Rarer than that is the presence of mole cells on the spinal cord and at the base of the brain, but it does occur.
Number 6. The 5-dollar bill is legit. The image of Abraham Lincoln on the 5 is often said to be an inaccurate flipped version of his portrait, landing his mole on the wrong side of his face.
Number 5. They’re inevitable. As their genetic code is passed down for generations they can’t be avoided. They can, however, be removed.
Number 4. They were once considered evidence of evil. In Medieval times, moles were seen as proof that a woman had engaged in relations with the devil. Not surprisingly, spot-reducing remedies were big back then.
Number 3. Moles can keep you young. A study of women showed that those who had several beauty marks also had younger skin cells. It came down to the length of their telomeres. The genetic data protectors found at the end of our chromosomes shorten over time, but moles and longer ones were found to be related.
Number 2. Girls have more of them. Female children are twice as likely than their male counterparts to have a birthmark mole.
Number 1. Dog moles are different. Theirs are located under their chins and are groupings of nerves that typically have hair growing from them. The area is quite sensitive and acts like a set of whiskers.

Beauty mark
A beauty mark or beauty spot is a euphemism for a type of dark facial mole, so named because such birthmarks are sometimes considered an attractive feature. Medically, such "beauty marks" are generally melanocytic nevus, more specifically the compound variant. Moles of this type may also be located elsewhere on the body, and may also be considered beauty marks if located on the face, shoulder, neck or breast.
Fashionable beauty marks
In the twentieth century Marilyn Monroe's beauty mark generated a new vogue. Fashion model Cindy Crawford's prominent mole helped revive the fashion.
Artificial beauty mark
False beauty marks are sometimes applied to the face as a form of make-up. Beauty marks were particularly highly regarded during the eighteenth century and creating false ones became common, often in fanciful shapes such as hearts or stars. They could be purchased as silk or velvet patches known as "mouches" (flies). Alexander Pope's 1712 poem The Rape of the Lock mentions such patches as indicators of "secular love":

Beauty
Beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction. Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics, sociology, social psychology, and culture. An "ideal beauty" is an entity which is admired, or possesses features widely attributed to beauty in a particular culture, for perfection.
The experience of "beauty" often involves an interpretation of some entity as being in balance and harmony with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being. Because this can be a subjective experience, it is often said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
There is evidence that perceptions of beauty are evolutionarily determined, that things, aspects of people and landscapes considered beautiful are typically found in situations likely to give enhanced survival of the perceiving human's genes.
Etymology
The classical Greek noun that best translates to the English "beauty" or "beautiful" was κάλλος, kallos, and the adjective was καλός, kalos. However, kalos may and is also translated as ″good″ or ″of fine quality″ and thus has a broader meaning than only beautiful. Similarly, kallos was used differently from the English word beauty in that it first and foremost applied to humans and bears an erotic connotation.

I've explained what moles and freckles are and the differences between them, but where do beauty marks fit in? Stay tuned!
After DermTV episodes explaining what moles and freckles are and the very important differences between them, I received a lot of questions about beauty marks, especially asking what they are and how they're different from moles and freckles.
This is an easy one and probably the shortest DermTV episode ever!
All beauty marks are moles!
Everything I said about moles applies to beauty marks... their colors, shape, whether they are flat or raised, and even their potential to turn into deadly melanomas.
Many celebrities have specific beauty marks for which they have become known by. Because the term "beauty marks" has an aesthetic connotation, we generally tend to call moles on the face beauty marks, while the same exact mole elsewhere on the body is just called a mole.
So while every beauty mark is a mole, and every mole could be called a beauty mark, depending on where they are, some are called moles and some are called beauty marks.

Number 10. They have a formal name. In certain circles if you have one it’s a nevus, and those with several have nevi.
Number 9. Having quite a few is common. Most people have between 10 and 40. Once a person hits the age of 40 they typically stop developing new ones, and in older years they start to fade away.
Number 8. Darker doesn’t always mean dangerous. It’s not uncommon for the color of moles to deepen throughout one’s teen years, when they’re in the sun, or during pregnancy. Color changes can be a sign of cancer, though, so having them checked is a good idea.
Number 7. They can be any size and anywhere. About 1 in 200 to 500 thousand people have large moles than cover a good portion of their body. Rarer than that is the presence of mole cells on the spinal cord and at the base of the brain, but it does occur.
Number 6. The 5-dollar bill is legit. The image of Abraham Lincoln on the 5 is often said to be an inaccurate flipped version of his portrait, landing his mole on the wrong side of his face.
Number 5. They’re inevitable. As their genetic code is passed down for generations they can’t be avoided. They can, however, be removed.
Number 4. They were once considered evidence of evil. In Medieval times, moles were seen as proof that a woman had engaged in relations with the devil. Not surprisingly, spot-reducing remedies were big back then.
Number 3. Moles can keep you young. A study of women showed that those who had several beauty marks also had younger skin cells. It came down to the length of their telomeres. The genetic data protectors found at the end of our chromosomes shorten over time, but moles and longer ones were found to be related.
Number 2. Girls have more of them. Female children are twice as likely than their male counterparts to have a birthmark mole.
