May 2-3, 2015
After completing the rigorous lower Tiger Leaping Gorge hike, we managed to catch a short rest at Tina's Guesthouse before catching the 15:30 bus right outside of Tina's straight through to Shangri-La. Bus tickets cost RMB 55 per person and the bus ride takes about 2.5 hours.
Once we arrived in Shangri-La, we made our way through the city center to the more touristy Ancient Town to find accommodation for the night. We decided to do this in order to be closer to the sites of interest as we were only going to be in Shangri-La for a day and a half.
There were numerous options for accommodation and settled upon a quiet inn which cost us RMB 120 (USD 20) for the night. The room had all the basic amenities but also included electric blankets due to the cold weather!
After checking in, we then took advantage of the remaining daylight to get out and explore part of the Ancient Town and to find dinner. Yak meat and more specifically a Yak burger was certainly on our radar at that point in time!
To our dismay, we discovered that the restaurant we wanted to eat at had burned down in a huge fire that consumed a large portion of the Ancient Town in 2014. Hence the massive reconstruction and development that was taking place all around.
We settled on a cafe called Namaste. We enjoyed delicious Yak pie, lentil soup and pita bread with Yak butter for our dinner. We also tried the butter tea, another local speciality. After dinner we made our way back to our inn and caught an early night's sleep.
In the morning we were greet by a fantastic, blue sky as we took a stroll through the Ancient Town toward Bai Ji Temple, which was only a 30 minute walk away from where we were staying.
At the temple we witnessed people taking offerings of pine tree branches and incense which were burned in furnaces, releasing smoke up into the sky. People, young and old alike, also lined up to pass by and spin the prayer wheels in front of the temple. All over the hill and around the temple, bright colourful prayer flags can be seen, which look really spectacular as they blow in the wind. There are also brilliant views of the mountains and surrounding grass plains from the vantage point of the temple.
We returned to the Ancient Town at about 11am and had brunch at a small cafe called Story. Tim had a burger (not Yak unfortunately) and fries, while Glo had a "French" breakfast. both meals were delicious and taken on the cafe's outside balcony.
After brunch, we walked to the nearby square and spotted a white Yak! We couldn't help but have a closer look at it! Right at the square you will find another temple with a huge prayer wheel which people can push!
We then made our way by taxi to the Shangri-La bus station for RMB 13, then bought our bus tickets back to Lijiang for RMB 62 per person. The bus ride back to Lijiang took 3 hours.

In this episode of Travelogue, Chen Lei will take you to an ancient land of China, Lijiang of Yunanan province. to discover the beauty of local Naxi minority groups and its mysterious Yulong Mountain and Yun Shang Ping grassland.
Variety of China's landscapes, diversity of its people. Welcome to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a perfect example of a combination between human and nature. Besides of marvelous sceneries, there are also beautiful minority groups, such as Naxi groups, living around these sceneries.
LIJIANG
A popular destination in Yunnan, is considered a fairyland blessed with fresh air, clear streams, breathtaking snow mountains and an undisturbed landscape inhabited by a friendly group of people. It is great to enjoy a quiet and pleasant holiday in Lijiang Old Town which is graced by well preserved ancient buildings and the Naxi culture.
While the geographical position of Lijiang City is remote, it has the advantage of ensuring a pleasant year round climate and a wide variety of tourist resources in the 20,600 square kilometers area. The earliest recorded history of Lijiang can be traced back to the Warring States Period (476 BC-221 BC) but with the advent of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the local economy reached a peak with the development of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road which made a great contribution to both commercial and cultural communication between Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces.(From: www.travelchinaguide.com)

Travel video about destination Yunnan in China.
Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in southwest China.The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city’s largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple of Total Penetration (yes, that’s its name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming’s old town.In the west of Yunnan Province, there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain. Across Dianchi Lake and nestled among the rocks are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey, the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life.Yunnan’s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shilin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried–up ocean, when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea of Fire, Dragon’s Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face.The Venice of the Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang, in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Bao Shan is a typical village of the region and is just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than 200 year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties, in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan Province - place of simplicity, exquisite culture and spectacular natural wonders!

Why do we seek? We seek because it is human nature to do so.
Every day, we open our eyes to the promise of something new, something previously unfelt. We seek to feel, so that we may understand the value of little things – like the sound of a breath… magnified by the hush of a place bigger than our dreams. We seek to leave a path for others to follow. That they may explore. Dream. Discover. And it is through seeking that we find what it is to be part of this immense, beautiful world.

ANGRY CHINESE Tour Guide travel guide loses license after berating tourists for not spending enough.
A travel agency in Yunnan province has been forced to suspend operations after one of its employees was filmed unleashing a rant on a bus full of visitors because they weren't spending enough at scenic spots.
The guide, Chen Chunyuan, had her license revoked and her employer, the Kunming Fenghua Travel Agency, was fined 20,000 yuan.
The ordeal went down on April 12 as the group was traveling from Lijiang to Kunming and was headed for Xishuangbanna, according to a report on People's Daily. Video footage showing the guide 'venting frustration' on the travelers because they failed to spend enough money at a jewelry shop went viral after being posted on May 1.
"The bus is prepared for tourists who have moral standards and conscience. If you do not have these, you are not fit to sit here," Chen had said angrily.
"If each of you cannot spend 3,000 to 4,000 yuan, we will cancel the trip. Your flight tickets home will also not be covered in this trip as well," she went on.
"You need to at least spend for the sake of your conscience. If you cannot do that, there will be retributions coming to you," she added.
The China National Tourism Administration investigated the incident as soon as it began circulating online.
Tour guides commonly arrange deals with shops at scenic spots and encourage travelers to spend there as a way to earn commission. In February, a Harbin woman complained that a tour guide in Hong Kong refused to take the group to Disneyland unless each person spent 4,000 RMB at a jewelry store.

Travel video about destination China.
China’s Imperial City is located in the centre of its ancient Middle Kingdom, a gigantic and inscrutable empire beyond the Great Wall. The Imperial City is entered through the Gates of Heavenly Peace.After seven years of construction, Ming Emperor Zhu Di moved into his newly-established palace complex in which over eight thousand people lived in almost a thousand rooms. The palace served as both a residential and governmental seat to the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. A stone’s throw away from the old Summer Palace is the Garden of Harmonious Unity that was the favourite garden of the Emperor’s household who retreated to its cool lakeside shores during the humid months of summer. Close to Badaling the Great Wall Of China extends majestically across misty mountains. It is the largest Man-made structure in the world and was erected to protect the country from invasion from the North. The gigantic wall represented the division of two very different cultures. On one side the Central Asian Nomads and on the other the highly developed civilisation of the emerging Chinese Empire. Shanghai is a Gigantic City and a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city’s main focal point and is a combination of past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye catching buildings of a great city. Famous explorer Marco Polo referred to Suzhou as the ‘Venice of the East’, a city that is particularly famous for its gardens. Many of its extremely elegant buildings are remnants of a glorious past. Yunnan´s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest Of Shi Lin, a forest of rock that extends for 27,000 hectares. Hong Kong is a city of the superlative with glimmering skyscrapers that seem to take root in the sky and one elegant building after another with shining glass and hi-tech facades. China is a world within a world!

China is a huge country in Eastern Asia (about the same size as the United States of America) with the world's largest population.
With coasts on the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, in total it borders 14 nations. It borders Afghanistan, Pakistan (through the disputed territory of Kashmir), India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam to the south; Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to the west; Russia and Mongolia to the north and North Korea to the east. This number of neighbouring states is equalled only by China's vast neighbour to the north, Russia.
This article only covers mainland China. For Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, please see separate articles.
See in China
===========
China's attractions are endless and you will never run out of things to see. Especially near the coastal areas, if you run out of things to see in one city, the next one is usually just a short train ride away.
Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover or someone who just wants to relax on a nice beach, China has it all from the majestic Forbidden City in Beijing, to the breathtaking scenery of Jiuzhaigou. Even if you live in China for many years, you'll find that there's always something new to discover in another part of the country. Perhaps unsurprising due to its sheer size and long history, China has the third largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, after Italy and Spain.
Karst Scenery
=============
The gumdrop mountains and steeply sloping forested hills with bizarre rock formations favored by traditional Chinese artists are not creative fantasy. In fact, much of southern and southwestern China is covered in strangely eroded rock formations known as Karst. Karst is type of limestone formation named after an area in Slovenia. As limestone layers erode, the denser rock or pockets of different stone resist erosion forming peaks. Caves hollow out beneath the mountains which can collapse forming sinkholes and channels leading to underground rivers. At its most unusual Karst erodes to form mazes of pinnacles, arches and passageways. The most famous example can be found in the Stone Forest (石林 Shílín) near Kunming in Yunnan. Some of the most famous tourist areas in China feature spectacular karst landscapes — Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of central and western Guizhou province.
Sacred sites
==========
Several sites in China have famous Buddhist art:
Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province - more than 51,000 Buddhist carvings, dating back 1,500 years, in the recesses and caves of the Yangang Valley mountainsides
Mogao Caves in Gansu province - art and manuscripts dating back to the 4th century
Dazu Rock Carvings near Chongqing - dating from the 7-13th century
Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang - 5-10th century
Mountains
========
The Five Great Mountains (五岳 wǔyuè), associated with Taoism:
Mount Tai (泰山), Shandong Province (1,545 meters)
Mount Hua (华山), Shaanxi Province (2,054 meters)
Mount Heng (Hunan) (衡山), Hunan Province (1,290 meters)
Mount Heng (Shanxi) (恒山), Shanxi Province (2,017 meters)
Mount Song (嵩山), Henan Province, where the famous Shaolin Temple (少林寺) is located (1,494 meters)
The Four Sacred Mountains (四大佛教名山 sìdà fójiào míngshān), associated with Buddhism:
Mount Emei (峨嵋山), Sichuan Province (3,099 meters)
Mount Jiuhua (九华山), Anhui Province (1,342 meters)
Mount Putuo (普陀山), Zhejiang Province (297 meters, an island)
Mount Wutai (五台山), Shanxi Province (3,058 meters)
The three main sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism:
========
Mount Kailash, Tibet (5,656 meters), also known as Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan, also one of Hinduism's holiest mountains visited by many Hindu pilgrims
Kawa Karpo
Amnye Machen
Itineraries
=========
Some itineraries cover trips that are entirely within China:
Two weeks to a month in China
A week near Hong Kong
Along the Yangtze river
Along the Yellow river
Along the Grand Canal
Yunnan tourist trail
Overland to Tibet
Long March
Others are partly in China:
====================
Europe to South Asia over land
Silk Road - ancient caravan route from China to Europe
Karakoram Highway - Western China to Pakistan through the Himalayas
On the trail of Marco Polo
Overland Kunming to Hong Kong

[dt.]

Those of us, like we did, who believe that Kunming, in the province Yunnan, is a provincial town far away from Beijing, should quickly correct this perception. 3.5 million inhabitants, of which about 1 million live in the urban areas, modern architecture and skyscrapers, as far as the eye can see, make Kunming a modern city in the European sense.
However, in the evening the center is illuminated in all colors. Flashing lights everywhere leave the city for us appear unreal.

Der Steinwald Shilin - 石林 - oder auch Shilin Yizu Zizhixian - 石林彝族自治县 - liegt südöstlich des Stadtzentrums von Kunming und ist ein Highlight für alle Kunming Besucher.

The Shilin Stone Forest - 石林 - or Shilin Yizu Zizhixian - 石林彝 族 自治县 - located southeast of Kunming is a highlight for all visitors.
Shilin Yi Autonomous County, formerly called Lunan County, is home to the Yi nationality and under the jurisdiction of Kunming , the provincial capital of Yunnan in China. The bizarre formations of the Stone Forrest stretch across 24,000 hectares. 80 hectares of the Stone Forrest have been developed for tourists. 270 million years ago, sediment settled in the sea. Later the sediments were lifted tectonically and the soft layers were eroded by wind and water. The limestone formations reach a height of 98 ft.
Since 2007, two parts of the Stone Forest - the Naigu Stone Forest and the Suogeyi Village - belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the South China Karst.
