***This report contains some disturbing images*** An undercover BBC investigation into conditions at a mental health institution in Guatemala has revealed patient suffering and abuse at the hands of those meant to care for them. Federico Mora Hospital has been described by campaigners as the world's most abusive and dangerous mental health institution. In 2012, Guatemala was ordered by an American Human Rights Commission to make emergency improvements to the Federico Mora Hospital to "save lives". The government promised to comply. But an undercover BBC investigation found little has changed. The government defends conditions in the hospital, says it has begun improving mental health care in the country and has ordered an investigation into sexual abuse claims. Report by Chris Rogers

With regard to 'inclusive growth' Bishop Ramazzini draws attention to issues such as the ecological limits of our planet, the role of extractive industries, the quality of life of the poor, and the role of volunteering and domestic work of women. Moreover, Ramazzini questions whether putting the 'green economy' into practice will imply a change in our consumption and an honest redistribution of wealth.
He also wonders whether the EU will be able to be more coherent in its policies to support development; stopping subsidies to its farmers, supporting regulations on land use, rethinking Free Trade Agreements and reconsidering migration policies.

STORYLINE
Central American leaders on Wednesday concluded a one day meeting in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua where they addressed a series or regional issues.
The presidents of SICA ( Central American Integration System) agreed to seek a common position in support of Cuba being readmitted into the Organisation of American States.
They also agreed to accelerate negotiations on a possible trade agreement with the European Union and setting up a credit fund, funded by the EU, to reduce the asymmetries between the two blocs.
Earlier in the day Nicaraguan Vice Foreign Minister Manul Coronel Kautz said his government would push for the creation, by some EU member nations, of a common credit fund for Central America totalling 60 (b) billion euros, 82 (b) billion US Dollars.
He added that Nicaragua is seeking consensus throughout the region regarding the total amount for the fund, after negotiations on that point stalled during a meeting with EU representatives last April.
The group also formalised its backing of Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom who is facing a potentially destabilising political crisis at home.
Thousands of Guatemalan's have called for Colom's resignation after he was accused in the killing of a prominent lawyer.

Using ICT to Enhance Governance in Indigenous Guatemalan Communities
Cesar Perez, Humphrey Fellow
Patzún, Guatemala, with a 94% indigenous Maya Kaqchikel population and an economy based on agriculture and handicraft, started a technology program to address the digital divide while still maintaining its traditions. A “digital democracy zone” promoted transparency and citizen engagement and included a community computer center and free internet in the town’s public square. Because of this program, Patzún’s citizens and the local government were empowered through the use of ICT and ICT-based applications, which improved citizens’ quality of life and governance processes. In his presentation, Humphrey Fellow Cesar Perez discusses these innovative initiatives and their impact.
Mr. Cesar L. Perez Carrera was most recently the Technology Program Officer at the International Republican Institute (IRI). He was responsible for building local technical capacity and facilitating access to innovative information and communications technology tools (ICTs) in order to improve public administration in Central America. Mr. Perez wishes to study technological issues confronting society, including effective strategies for dealing with business and government. He holds a B.S. in computer science from Iwate University in Japan, and an IT Master Executive from the Universidad Salamanca in Spain.

For the second consecutive year, 15 Westfield State University students and two faculty members traveled to Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala during spring break as a clinical and civic engagement element for their nursing courses.
Led by Marcia Scanlon, DNP, assistant professor of nursing and allied health, and Dr. Catherine Johnson, assistant professor of nursing and allied health, students paid out of pocket for travel expenses and raised money for supplies for the people of Guatemala, including water filters. Students raised $1,500 from a taco dinner fundraiser and received additional support from the Westfield Engages program, a civic engagement initiative at Westfield State.
“It was a life changing experience,” Dr. Scanlon said. “The students learn to appreciate a different culture and become leaders for social justice. This experience will transform their nursing career as they can draw from what they learned during the time in Guatemala.”
While in Guatemala, students built wheelchairs for two different children with physical and intellectual challenges and a house for a family of six that and furnished it with bunk beds, a stove, and items to bless the house.
With the money raised, students provided and served 400 children a protein meal for lunch and delivered sandwiches and fruit to the local homeless population. Students donated their time and money to an infant malnutrition center by caring for the infants. They also walked into the village to deliver water filters and teach locals how to properly use them.
In addition, students visited a daycare of 100 students and donated arts and crafts and school supplies to the center. While there, students balanced their time between participating in activities like art projects and teaching basic health skills like showing the children how to use toothbrushes.
Nursing student Apple Bottass ’16 of Tolland, Mass. served as a translator enabling the Westfield State students and faculty members to communicate with the locals.
“It appreciated the opportunity to work with my peers in a different way,” Bottass said. “They were so sincere trying their best to have meaningful conversations with the locals and I think the feeling was mutual. The children appreciated the love and attention that they received from my group.”
Bottass said traveling to Guatemala made her appreciate everything she had a little more, especially after delivering a meal to a homeless man and his wife.
“This was at almost 9 o’clock at night and to them the sight of food after falling asleep on an empty stomach was like seeing angels descend from heaven,” Bottass said. “It was so moving.”
While Bottass enjoyed all of her time in Guatemala, building a house for a local family really stood out to her.
“As a mother of four young children, this project was especially close to my heart,” Bottass said. “I could relate to the mother’s joy and deep gratitude for what we did for them that day. It was very special.”
Dr. Scanlon said she was proud of how her students handled themselves, both on a personal and professional basis.
“The highlight of my trip was to experience and witness the interactions of the students with the community members of Guatemala,” Dr. Scanlon said. “To see students smile, laugh, or cry at the work and care they were giving to another human being of a different culture and country was priceless.”

The Maya, Aztec, Olmec - Ancient Americans (AMAZING HISTORY DOCUMENTARY)
Ancient America was a very different, undisturbed place before the time of the "Contact", when the European explorers came to the New World.
Cut off from a retreat to their Asian homeland by the whims of the land bridge and the ice barriers, the pioneers moved deeper and deeper into their new continent. The Native Americans moved around North America as the food supply shifted from one area to another. This geographic redistribution resulted in large part from the comings and goings of the glaciers. When the glaciers expanded, flora, fauna and people were forced southward. As the glaciers retreated and melted, they watered large areas that are now arid (e.g. the Great Basin - today’s Nevada, Utah, Colorado area). These lands supported much vegetation, many animals, and presumably people. Aridity set in when the glaciers had run their course and no longer were furnishing meltwater. As the food trail dried, people probably left these areas.
Population growth over the many millennia was slow, however in the American land of plenty they not only survived but flourished. As generation followed generation, they spread from the Central Plains to present-day California and to the forests of the Atlantic Coast. They trekked through Mexico and Central American jungles and reached the southernmost tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego. Above all, they learned to adapt to the many new environments the New World held for them.
Before the European explorers arrived, the descendants of the prehistoric pioneers and later migrants - the Native Americans - had formed a wide variety of tribes in North America. Clearly, they were all related. But some of them were simple nomads, roaming the dry plateaus and deserts of the West, while others were forest dwellers who sustained themselves as hunters and fishermen. In the Southwest lived the farming people of the Pueblo country, inhabiting substantial cities of stone or adobe (clay). In the Four-Corners area of the present Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico states was the heartland of the Anasazi people - the "ancient ones". Their culture began taking on its distinct characteristics about 100 B.C., but it became by the time of its climax the most extensive and influential by far in the Southwest. Along the Mississippi were the villages of the Mound People who built giant earthworks atop which they worshipped their gods. By this time the Native Americans spoke many different languages, some as different from each other as Italian from English. More than 200 languages and dialects developed. There were great variations in customs and traditions from place to place and tribe to tribe.
The first major civilization of Mesoamerica (what stretched from Mexico’s central plateau south to Costa Rica) was that of the Olmecs, the enigmatic people who inhabited the jungles along Mexico’s Gulf Coast as long ago as 1200 B.C. Their rulers built impressive temples and spread their influence throughout Middle America, among them to the Maya, Toltec, Aztec, as well as other peoples far to north and south.
Agriculture, as part of the milestones of cultural improvements, was invented in Mesoamerica circa 7000 B.C. to 1500 B.C. and began to spread northward. To aid in the process of human geographic distribution, agriculture arrived to North America from Mesoamerica and possibly also the Caribbean between 1000 and 2000 years ago. Areas suitable for agriculture were suitable for humans. Mesoamerica, along with the Andes region of South America, where agriculture also developed, is therefore sometimes referred to as "Nuclear America".
Native Americans spread out quickly in South America. They inhabited the hot and humid jungles just like the cold Andes high above the sea level, and adopted their lifestyle perfectly to the given climate and circumstances. The most spectacular culture of the area was the Inca.

The World's Best History Project! - Preserving Guatemala's Native Culture

To donate to this photo book and cultural preservation project, please visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/585522303/qeqchi-maya-photo-project-guatemala-a-photo-book
The Project: The photo book will be an 11x14 inch format book (The soft cover will be the largest landscape format book that can still have integrity-the same size or smaller than 11x14 inches). The layout will be photographs of Q'eqchi's working, their portraits, and any moving images accompanied by short interviews with the people. Occasional landscapes will appear to provide a context. Above and to the right you will see their original words in Q'eqchi' and below you will have their English translation.
Any stories pertinent to explain who the Q'eqchi' people are will be included.
This book would be perfect for any coffee table or waiting room. It will be a somewhat simple read with the focal aspect being the photographs.
My name is Tayler and I speak Q'eqchi'. I spent two years in the Polochic Valley of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala teaching, lending service, and learning the language. The people of the Polochic Valley speak Q'eqchi', a Mayan language, with only 800,000 native speakers worldwide.
Being there changed my life forever.
All of the photos you see in the video were taken with a point and shoot camera while I was there. This time I will have my full frame DSLR.
Not only is the region mind-bogglingly beautiful, the people are incredible. They are some of the most humble, meek, loving, and peaceful people I have ever met. Their generosity would leave me reeling. Even if they had no food for themselves they would insist on feeding me dinner. My perspectives regarding wealth and the material were forever altered.
Despite their living in reed-walled homes with tin roofs, they were the happiest people I have yet to meet. There was always a smile, always a joke. Everybody talked to everybody ESPECIALLY if you were a stranger-and believe me, at 6'3", blond and very white-I was definitely a stranger.
Being of Mayan descent, the cultural heritage of the Q'eqchi' people is very rich. I want to show it to you. In picture and in word I will bring the images of these amazing people to you accompanied by their perspectives and thoughts. They changed how I think, they can do they same for you.
Recently the country of Guatemala has completed a paved road into the remote valley in which these people live. The majority of the Q'eqchi's do not know any Spanish. With the road completed, access to the valley has become easier thus bringing in outside culture more easily. Albeit advantageous to learn Spanish for these humble people, I fear that their culture will soon be diluted. Time is running out to capture the true essence of the Q'eqchi' Mayans. Help me immortalize at least a portion of their legacy.
Challenges exist in any endeavor. I have felt for some time now that I should compile images of these incredible people. While learning Q'eqchi' I faced some pretty overwhelming circumstances. They didn't stop me. I am now fluent in the language and I am a better person because of it. I view this project as an extension of my original experience in Guatemala. I am determined. Nothing will stop this project from happening :)

Guatemala has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Latin American, a rate which increases significantly among the rural indigenous populations. As such, the Guatemalan Red Cross has identified maternal and child health as a priority area of work. One of the areas where the GRC's Maternal and Child Health program is currently being carried out is the western Department of San Marcos, with the support of the Norwegian Red Cross. The branch volunteers help to organize the women of the communities in support groups, to help each other learn about good practices relating to feeding and nutrition, prevention of illness, prenatal control, and the healthy development of children. Community health committees are formed and meet regularly to analyse the health situation of the community and to take actions to make improvements. The Guatemalan Red Cross also works with men and youth to talk about other health issues such as sexual health, rights, and family planning.

Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites.
Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigenous identity in the hemisphere.
Guatemala today is very much a synthesis of Maya and colonial traditions, fused with the omnipresent influences of twenty-first century Latin and North American culture. Baroque churches dating back to the Spanish Conquest coexist with pagan temples that have been sites of worship for millennia.
Highland street markets prosper alongside vast glitzy shopping malls, and pre-Columbian festival dances are performed by teenage hip-hop fans.

Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala.
Seaport
===========
The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. The port is located next to a free trade zone, the Zona de Libre Industria y Comercio Santo Tomás de Castilla, called Zolic. The port currently employs 2,100 workers. In 2004, 4.56 million tons of trading goods went through the port from 1,372 ships.
Cruise industry
===========
In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here. Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua.

Positive feedback of Miami’s Latino Community leaders about Guatemala’s private medical services with prices 60% to 70% lower than in the U.S. but with similar high quality of care, as an option for elective surgeries and medical/dental treatments. The Guatemalan Consulate together with members of Guatemala’s Health & Wellness Tourism sector jointly organized this P.R. event at the SOFITEL Miami to present Guatemala as medical travel destination to business and Community leaders of South Florida. The luncheon was sponsored by the Guatemala tourist Board (INGUAT), the Guatemalan Exporters Association (AGEXPORT) and the Trade and Investment Program of the Guatemalan Ministry of Economy (PACIT).
This was the first time that Keith Johnson, Corporate Healthcare Consultant to Guatemala and President of Stop-Loss Brokerage, introduced the “Latin American Preferred Health Plan” (LAPHP) to the Guatemalan business Community of Florida. During the same event, attendees were able to network with U.S.-Guatemalan Physicians, Guatemalan Specialists in cosmetic and rehabilitative dentistry and with the managers of Travel Agency “ConExpress”, Hot-Springs Spa Resort “Santa Teresita” and Medical Travel Facilitator “Medical Tourism Guatemala”, all active members of the Guatemalan Exporters Association who have partnered with U.S.-based insurance organizations via Stop-Loss Brokerage to promote a U.S. corporate health plan (= LAPHP) designed to offer to employees a medical travel option to Guatemala’s private medical network, allowing significant savings in claims on elective surgical and medical procedures, while maintaining permanent access to a U.S. medical network.

Ann and I have decided to brave the Guatemalan jungle. Ok, not exactly. We embark on a fairly typical vacation path for tourists. We fly into the Guatemala city airport and then take a shuttle bus directly to Antigua. From there we climb a volcano before heading to Lake Atitlan to visit 5 little towns, reachable only by boat. Enjoy!

See a tortilla-making demonstration
Day by Day Itinerary
Small Groups: Never more than 10-16 travelers—guaranteed!
Travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize to delve into the legacies of the ancient Mayan civilization. More than 3,000 years ago this sophisticated culture emerged from the humid rain forests, flourished for centuries, and then vanished. In that time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the western hemisphere—all while Paris was just a sleepy village. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya. From ruins to rituals to rural villages, we'll trace the footsteps of the enigmatic Mayan culture as only OAT can—in our trademark small groups. Along the way, we'll meet modern-day descendants preserving their Mayan heritage with jade carvings, colorful weavings, and warm hospitality. Join us as we travel back in time to explore the Route of the Maya.

Guatemala Adventure Travel: Everyone who arrives at Guatemala leaves better, more complete. With an adventure that wasn't expected. That is why in Guatemala we would like to show you something more than lakes and volcanoes, more than Mayan cities and more than towns full of color.
Guatemala is still a developing nation, a young democracy with a turbulent and bloody history that's beset by deep-rooted inequalities. And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish.
It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the country's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala such a compelling place for travellers.
All this in your Guatemala Adventure Travel!
