This article provides details on the actual failures and mistakes of the socialist policies implemented by the government.
The primary failure was that the socialist government of Venezuela never diversified the economy beyond oil revenues, so when oil revenue collapsed, there was no funding for all the goodies (bribes) that the government was distributing to the masses. Oil has dropped below $50 per BBL, which means no one is making money on oil right now.
But it's literally the classic, textbook failure of a centrally planned economy: the socialist bureaucrats assumed that oil would always be around and never relied on market forces to diversify the economy, create new products and services, or spur innovation. It's a microcosm for what's happening in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Puerto Rico, all countries greatly harmed by central planning, government intervention and massively constrained free markets.
A citizen's dividend from the unrefined natural resources, within the matrix of a voluntary and free market, would truly empower individuals, instead of feeding the political class and an ineffective and retarded state apparatus based on coercion and control.

"I don't give the system, as we know it, more than six months," said Francisco Rodíguez, highlighting Venezuela's dollar exchange rate and relative prices as some major issues for the country's economy. While Venezuela's economic situation affects investors' confidence in the country, the political scenario has implications for foreign interests as well, said panelists. According to Alejandro Velasco, President Nicolás Maduro's 20 percent approval rating does not transfer to support for the opposition, and Venezeula is still not on the verge of political change unless protests by the popular sector take place. Even if the opposition were to take over, Jaime Reusche said there would still be some loss to bond holders.

http://democracynow.org - Tensions are growing between the United States and Venezuela as the government of President Nicolás Maduro grapples with an economic crisis and a right-wing opposition calling for his removal from office. Venezuela has announced the arrest of an unspecified number of Americans on charges of espionage, new restrictions on the number of U.S. diplomats allowed in Venezuela, and rule changes that will subject Americans to the same visa requirements Venezuelans face in the United States. Maduro has also unveiled a list of American politicians barred from entering Venezuela in response to U.S. sanctions against Venezuelan officials last year. Maduro has repeatedly accused right-wing opponents of fomenting a coup with U.S. support. The White House has denied the charges, but said last week it is considering "tools" to "steer the Venezuelan government in the direction ... they should be headed." Weighing in on Venezuela, Noam Chomsky says the United States should be working with the Maduro government, not trying to undermine it.

Oil prices around the world are falling as countries are finding alternative sources for fuel and energy. This is good news for the environment but bad news for anyone living in countries whose economies rely on fuel sales.
Venezuela is one country whose international sales dropped by 60% and consequently the country has been forced to cut back on foreign imports. There’s a shortage of basic supplies, which is why people are now forced to line up for hours just to get into a pharmacy or a supermarket.
Condoms are one item which are now extremely expensive, for example, a box of 36 Trojan condoms now costs USD $755 in Venezuela. And you most likely have to buy it from a black market website or dealer.
Venezuela is already the country in South America with the highest number of pregnancies and has the 3rd highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases in South America.
Unfortunately, it’s a problem with no cheap solution in sight.
