Ruskin's sexual dysfunction and his wife's sexual innocence and inexperience in the repressed atmosphere of Victorian England are further complicated by Effie's affair with pre-Raphaelite painter Sir John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge) after Effie poses for the artist and falls in love with him. Author and art historian Lady Elizabeth Eastlake (Emma Thompson, who wrote the screenplay), Effie's friend and champion, encourages her to seek an annulment from her husband. In order to prove non-consummation of the marriage, Effie is forced to undergo a physical examination that confirms her virginity after five years of marriage to Ruskin. During the trial, which creates a scandal and more discussion than the ongoing Crimean War, a doctor (Robbie Coltrane) testifies that the plaintiff is a virgin. The physical examination and embarrassing courtroom testimony about her intimate life induces a psychosomatic paralysis that lasts 10 days. The judge rules in Effie's favor, citing her husband's "incurable impotency." While her internationally renowned husband continues his busy professional and social life, Effie, a spirited, outgoing woman, is ousted from society and forbidden to attend any event where Queen Victoria is present. Her ostracism is alleviated by her marriage to Millais, with whom she will eventually have eight children.

John Ruskin (In Our Time, 31/3/05)
*** The life and work of John Ruskin. He was the most brilliant art critic of his age, perhaps the most brilliant that Britain has ever produced, but he was much more than that.

A lecture by Octavia Randolph
In December 2014 Octavia Randolph published her long-awaited novel, Light, Descending, about the English Victorian art critic John Ruskin. She writes of Venice and of Ruskin: “The city was so central to his world view and development of aesthetic theory that it must by nature occupy a signal place in his creative universe. It served as touchstone in his personal life as well; when he and Effie finally made their long-delayed wedding trip abroad Venice was the goal. Almost thirty years later, overwintering in the city, Ruskin descended into a grave psychological state marked by the hallucinations which would haunt him the remainder of his life. Yet as we know from his writings Venice symbolised the entirely of civilization to him, and wandering its calles he read not only the story of La Serenissima but the past and future of his own maritime empire, Britain.”

Roberta Joan Anderson sat down for a personal, reflective interview in November 1986. The interviewer, Joe Smith, was a longtime record executive who interviewed hundreds of music legends as part of his book, Off The Record. In this extended conversation with Joni we hear an artist come to grips with both her rise to fame and the price that she felt she paid for experimenting in her career and not seeking hits and fame alone.

"I was young for my age. Not as naïve as they expected. I don’t know why I seem to bring that out in people."
"If you see yourself as a kingly type, then you need your serfs and your army and someone around you."
"I thought, ‘All things considered, I’d rather be dancing.’"

About the Media Access Awards The Media Access Awards were created in 1979 by the California Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities along with producer Fern Field and her late husband, Norman Brooks, to recognize and encourage the accurate portrayal of people with disabilities.
An estimated 56 million Americans live with disabilities. In recognition of this reality, the entertainment unions and guilds recognize the social impact of films, television and broadcasting, and strive for an open dialogue regarding portrayals of disability and increased employment opportunities in front of and behind the scenes. To that end, the Media Access Awards celebrates producers, actors, writers, broadcasters, and casting directors who have made positive contributions to the more accurate and inclusive portrayals of persons with disabilities in film, television, and all other media. They are truly pioneers in affecting change. For more info - please visit: http://mediaaccessawards.com https://www.facebook.com/MediaAccessAwards
